"Feel better, she just can't control her emotions right now." Kimmy said strolling with me through the mall.
"I'm trying to be understanding, but I have feelings too. She keeps thinking that I'm staying by her side because I want something from her, I just wanna help her through this tough patch in her life as a friend. Why does she care if I end up old and lonely or not? Sorry, I'm ranting again." I said through a rack of baby jackets.
"How big are babies?" I asked turning around to Kimmy and placing the tiny jacket against my chest, modeling it.
"You're so clueless." She said taking the jacket out of my hand and placing it back on the rack. "They grow quickly so it's best to buy cheap things then when they are around six months you can buy whatever you want. For right now, it's just the basics."
"You're the best." I said squishing her face in between my hands, she links her arms around mine and nods.
"Took you a while to realize that I'm the best."
"How about we stop by that coffee shop and get a drink?" She proposed. I nodded and let her lead the way. I grabbed my sweater and jacket out of my backpack and zipped up as we walked arm in arm down the street.
"Whew. It's so cold." Kimmy said pulling her hoodie down when got safely inside.
"I hope she is wearing warm clothing and not heels in this weather."
"She isn't your girlfriend and she even told you to stop caring about her. If you love her as much as you say you do, you should listen to her." Kimmy said reading the menu
"Slap me when I start talking about her again." I said as we got into line.
"Umhm." Kimmy said checking her phone after taking her mittens off. I looked at the menu and all I could see were the items that Jaejin liked the most, I had to resist the urge to call her and ask if she wanted one.
"I'll take a hot chocolate, and you Byunghee?"
"Hm?" I said startled. "Uh same." I said taking out my wallet to pay for the drinks.
"Nope, go take a seat." Kimmy said nudging me. I knew I couldn't fight with her she would literally beat me up.
I sat down at a cozy sofa over looking the fire. I set my backpack thinking about the drinks. If I had gotten her the warm caramel latte for her and we would be sitting together wrapped in a big blanket in front of the TV, sipping our drinks and enjoying each other's company.. like old times.
"YAH!" Kimmy shouted waving my drink in front of my face.
"Oh. Thank you."
"Dreaming of her?" She asked, taking the seat across from me.
"Yes." I admitted.
"I'll let you go this time, but I will really hit you next time." She said tossing her hair aside and getting comfortable in the chair, I stared at the fire and thought about all the chances I had before to ask her out, but I chickened out and let George into her life.
"You're pitiful." Kimmy said staring at me.
"Sorry." I winced as Kimmy punched my arm.
"It's only been three weeks, not the end of the world. She still loves you as a friend." Kimmy said comforting me.
"I'm afraid that I'm not even that anymore." I sat back in my seat and sighed. "She should know the gender of the baby now! I can't wait.. just hit me on the head." I said to Kimmy.
She slapped my head lightly and chuckled. "She's been over there since before we came in." Kimmy said looking at her cup.
"What?" I said jumping up.
"Shh, wait. She's with another guy." My heart sunk when those words left Kimmy's mouth. She couldn't accept me because she had another guy waiting for her. She denied me because I wasn't her type of guy. She didn't want me in her life, because of him.
I peeked over at her, her hair bright red against her white jacket. She sat there laughing and touching his hand, sipping the caramel latte I should have bought for her. And of course, wearing heeled boots. How many times do I have to tell her? I stop my thoughts and breathed in calmly.
"Come on, let's go." Kimmy said patting my leg. I stood up unable to take my eyes off Jaejin. I know she feels my presence, but she won't turn to look at me.
"I can't do it. Can we wait until they leave?" I turned to Kimmy with my heart pouring onto the ground before me. She helped pick up the pieces of my heart and sat me down on the couch, turning it in a direction where I couldn't look at Jaejin. Kimmy scooted her chair closer and patted my leg as I sat there staring at the fire.
