There was something about his hawk eyes, the way he looked at people like he was always closely scrutinizing them, like he was always negatively judging people, rating their clothes and facial reactions, downgrading them to a lower level than him.  He never looked friendly, and whether he meant to or not, I couldn’t care less, because it wasn’t like he was any better.

He was always sitting up straight, like he was an innocent, wealthy high-class, like he was better than us, like he was the kid who should have gone to a more sophisticated, private university instead of this common, regular college in the middle of town.  His expressions were so similar, never changing, always stuck in that glum and stiff smile, if it was even a smile—more like a glare or maybe a frown, like he was paralyzed so it was the only face he could show.

“What’re you looking at?” he suddenly asked me, making me jolt at his surprisingly soft expression.

“I-it’s nothing,” I lied, quickly staring straight down at my notes.

“Yeah, sure,” he replied sarcastically, setting his pen down.  “I don’t want to appear rude, but were you judging me?”
