Change can be good

Yunhee was running through the 3rd floor hallway as fast as she could. She got into a mess with the school hotshot Taejoon, again. Taejoon had messed with Yunhee’s best friend and broke her heart. Yunhee was furious. She had known Taejoon for over ten years and he just kept becoming a bigger every year. She just couldn’t hold back this time, so now she was on the run and so far the odds was not in her favour. “Geez… why did I have to throw my shoe? Everybody knows he’s the strongest person in school… I’m so dead if he catches me!” Yunhee ran around a corner and was forced to stop. Two of Taejoon’s gang members were blocking her way. “Move or I’m gonna beat you up.” Yunhee said bluntly with an annoyed expression. The two guys just laughed. The taller on of them spoke. “And how are you gonna do that sweetie? With your makeup bag?” Yunhee narrowed her eyes. “I did warn you.” She said before she spun around and kicked both of them down to the floor and then quickly ran past them. Yunhee was quite strong and so far she was the only candidate that could have a fair fight against Taejoon, as long as his baboons stayed out of it. Yunhee ran down the stairs to 2nd floor, hoping that the people she was running from were still on the 3rd. She heard Taejoon yell her name. “I’M GONNA FREAKING KILL YOU YUNHEE!!!

Yunhee saw a few of Taejoon’s baboons blocking her way once again but this time they were to many, so instead of confronting them she did a sharp turn and ran into a classroom. She knew there was a door on the other side that led to staircase that would be her salvation. Yunhee quickly closed and locked the door. She stood against the door for a few minutes to hear if Taejoon and his baboons were searching for her, which they were. Yunhee heard Taejoon’s voice. “She ran in here. Get this door open.” Yunhee bit her lip. “Crap.” She quickly turned around to run out of another door. She came to a stop as she realised she wasn’t alone in the room, three pairs of wide eyes stared at her.

Yunhee was unable to move when she heard the door behind her slam open. She closed her eyes and made an annoyed face. “Gotcha.” Taejoon’s sly voice sang throughout the classroom. “Where are you gonna go now?” Yunhee turned around and looked Taejoon directly in the eyes. “So what now?” Yunhee asked as she put both her hands on her waist. Taejoon shrugged. “How about I beat you senseless after giving me this.” Taejoon pointed to deep red mark Yunhee’s shoe had made on his cheek. “Uh.. That will leave a mark.” Yunhee said with a smile on her lips. “You little..” Taejoon took Yunhee by the collar and slammed her against the nearest wall. Yunhee groaned from the impact with the wall. Now the three guys that had been in the room from the beginning, started to interfere.

“Hey! Let go of that girl.” The one that appeared to be the oldest walked over and took Taejoon’s shoulder into a firm grip. “You are not the boss of me Soohyun.” Taejoon coldly said as he wiggled his shoulder free. “Seriously dude, stop it.” The more feminine boy said as he stood up from his desk. “Shut up Kevin!” Taejoon yelled as his grip around Yunhee’s collar tightened. “You may be my classmates but that does not mean I listen to you. Yunhee deserves what is coming to her.” Yunhee’s eyes started to narrow. “You deserved getting hit by a shoe.. You made my best friend pregnant.. She’s only 16 and has to get an abortion. You are a sick bastard.” Yunhee’s voice was bitter and full of hate. Now the third boy in the room stood up. “You did what? Taejoon that is messed up.” The guy who seemed to be the more masculine one of the three walked over to get Taejoon off of Yunhee. The guy pushed Taejoon with such force that Taejoon fell into a table. “Aw Eli!” Taejoon said as he held his hand to his side. “I give the girl props for even taking a stand against you.” Eli said as he gave Yunhee a sign to get the hell away from the room, which she did. “Are you kidding me?!” Taejoon said. “I’ve used over half of the day chasing her down and now your letting her go? You are supposed to be on my side.” Eli just glared down on Taejoon. “What you did was wrong and what she did was right. I would have thrown something at you too.” Taejoon’s eyes were filled with rage. “You are a traitor.” Taejoon’s voice was angry and hurt. “I’m tired of your Tae. It’s too much. I thought you would get your priorities straight this year, you promised me. Yet here you are doing exactly what you promised not to. I trusted you and then you make a girl pregnant, again!” Eli’s voice was cold and so were his eyes. Eli turned around and walked out of the room as he put his hands in his blazer pockets. The two other guys followed close behind.

Yunhee had left when Eli gestured her two and had ran all the way to her locker. She was panting like crazy. “Who the hell were those guys? Are they okay? I need to thank that… That Eli guy.” Yunhee leaned against her locker and closed her eyes as she caught her breath. “Are you okay?” Yunhee opened her eyes to see the feminine looking guy standing in front of her. “Uhm Yeah… I’m perfectly fine a bit exhausted but fine.” Yunhee gave a gentle smile. Kevin gave breathtaking smile back. “I’m Kevin. Let’s be friends. Your name is Yunhee right?” He held out his hand. Yunhee took it and gave a suspicious look as she shook his hand. “Yeah that’s me but why do you want to be friends with me? You’re not even in the same class as me.” Kevin just smiled. “I have a fanclub dedicated to hating Taejoon and I want you the join.” Yunhee raised her eyebrow. “And how many members are in it?” Kevin tapped his chin. “Two if I include you.” Yunhee chuckled at his words. “So are you in?” Kevin made an aegyo face that could melt every girl’s heart, including Yunhee’s. “Stop that!” Yunhee exclaimed as she put her hand over Kevin’s face to hide all the cuteness.

“You are in class 3-A right?” Kevin asked as he followed Yunhee to her class, since his classroom was close by. “Yeah, how did you know?” Kevin gave her a -are you serious- look. “You are the smartest person in school. Everybody knows which class you are in.” Yunhee’s eyes went wide. “What are you talking about?” Kevin looked over at her. “You get placed number 1 on every test, every exam. How could people not know? And you are the only person that dares take a stand against Taejoon.” Yunhee made an “oh” expression and just shrugged. “Well this is my class.” Yunhee said as she smiled at Kevin. “Can I get your phone number now that we are friends?” Kevin asked with a cute smile. Yunhee just looked at him with narrow eyes. “Why do you want to be friends with me? Is it so you can get free help with your homework?” Kevin laughed at her suspiciousness. “No that is not the reason. I like making new friends and you seemed like you would fit perfectly with my other friends and me. Even with your looks.” Yunhee frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?” Kevin shook his head. “Nothing.” He said with a sly tone. “Here is my number, write me any time you want. I’ll see you tomorrow Yunhee.” Kevin said with a grin as he walked off. “YA! Tell me what you meant!” But Kevin was already gone. “Aish.” Yunhee ruffled her hair in frustration. She let it go as she walked in and took her seat.

The long school day was finally over and Yunhee was packing her bag when a shadow covered her. Yunhee looked up at a senior with handsome facial features. Yunhee thought he looked familiar but she had trouble finding out why. “Hi.” The guy warmly greeted. “I don’t know if you remember me from the Taejoon incident.” Yunhee remembered now. “Oh.. I can’t remember your name though.” Yunhee said in an apologetic tone. “That’s okay. I’m Soohyun.” He held out his hand. Yunhee took it and shook it a little. “I’m Yunhee.” Soohyun flashed a big smile. “So I was wondering, how on earth did you decide to go up against Taejoon. I shared a classroom with him for almost 4 years and I’ve never seen anyone go against him like that, except Eli.” Yunhee shrugged. “I’ve known him for ten years and he has always been like this, but what he did to my friend was too much. I couldn’t hold my rage back… Wait who’s Eli again?” Soohyun couldn’t help but chuckle. “He’s the guy that saved you and he used to be Taejoon’s best friend.” Yunhee nodded. There was an awkward silence between them. “Well I just wanted to say that I respect what you did. It takes quite some balls to do that.” Soohyun said and gave Yunhee a thumps up. “I’ll see you around.” He said as he left the classroom. Yunhee just waved as he walked out.

As Soohyun walked out Eli entered. Yunhee stood up in an instant and bowed as she said her thanks. “Easy there, don’t overdo it.” Eli said with a smirk as he saw Yunhee’s reaction. “You really helped me out back then, is there any way I can repay you?” Yunhee asked as she leaned against her desk. Eli made a thinking expression. “There is one thing.” Yunhee looked at Eli. “Go out with me.” Yunhee almost choked on her own spit. “What?” Yunhee’s eyes were big and wide. Eli smirked. “You heard me.” Yunhee crossed her arms over her chest. “Why?” Eli shrugged. “You are hot and I kind of want to piss Taejoon off, since he has a crush on you it would be perfect.” Eli flashed a big sly smile. Yunhee’s jaw dropped to the floor. “He has a what?” Eli looked over at her. “You didn’t know? Why do you think he’s so fixed on you all the time?” Yunhee couldn’t believe her ears. “That doesn’t make any sense. He tried to beat me half to death today.” Eli hid another smirk. “That is why he likes you. You go against him.” Yunhee narrowed her eyes. “And you want to use me against him because?” Eli walked closer to Yunhee. He put his index finger under her chin and came close to her face. “You can get a perfect revenge like this and so can I. You don’t need to know why I want it.” Eli’s voice was low and husky. Yunhee put her hands on his chest and gently pushed him away with an angry expression on her face. “I may not like Taejoon but that does not mean I’ll play with his feelings. That makes me just like him, which I don’t want to be.” Yunhee coldly said as she took her bag and walked out. When she reached the door she turned around and looked at Eli. “I can see why you used to be Taejoon’s best friend, and here I thought you were different. I take my thanks for the help back. You seem just as bad,” Yunhee walked out and left Eli standing dumfounded back in the empty classroom.

Yunhee was happy to finally be home. Home was the only place she was really comfortable. Her dad greeted her with a big smile and a look that told her he had something important to say. “Welcome home dear.” Her dad said as he gestured for her to follow him into the living rom. “Hi dad, what’s up?” Her dad took a deep breath before continuing as they sat down on the couch. “You know how we talked about me leaving for Japan?” Yunhee nodded. “Well it has finally been decided and I’m leaving this Sunday.” Yunhee gave a happy smile. “That’s great dad!” Yunhee gave her dad a tight hug. “So you are okay with me leaving for over a year?” Yunhee looked down to her lap. “Yeah. It’s important for your carrier.” Yunhee’s dad caressed her cheek. “I’m going to leave you with one of my best friends and his family. He has a son around your age and then an adoptive son also around your age.” Yunhee just nodded. “Will I have to change schools?” Her dad shook his head. “I’ll miss you a lot though.” Yunhee said as she rested her head on her father’s shoulder. “I’ll miss you too dear.” He wrapped his arms around Yunhee. “I’ll call all the times I can.” Yunhee smiled. “Just promise me you’ll be home for mom’s anniversary.” Yunhee said in a low voice. “I promise.” He kissed Yunhee’s forehead as he hugged her tightly.

“What are you doing?” Yunhee exclaimed as she saw Kevin had started to pack her undies. “Woah.. I had no idea you owned things like these.” Kevin said with a teasing tone as he held up a red lace thong. “YA! Put that down!” Yunhee stormed over and pulled Kevin away from her underwear draw. “You are a horrible friend!” Yunhee said as she put the thong back in the draw. Kevin just shrugged. “What can I say? I am a dude after all.” Kevin flashed a breathtaking innocent smile and winked at Yunhee. Yunhee shook her head. “Just help me carry all my boxes down and I’ll take care of the clothes myself.” Kevin nodded with a cheerful grin as he took two boxes and walked down to the car.

“Thank you for helping me move Kevin.” Yunhee said while handing him a cold coke. “No problem. That is what friends are for.” He flashed a big smile as Yunhee smiled back. “Do you know the people you’re moving in with?” Yunhee shook her head. “All I know is that it’s my dad’s best friend from high school.” Kevin nodded and took a sip of his coke. “Well I hope they treat you nicely.” Kevin said with a caring tone. “It’s going to be nice to have a motherly figure in my life.” Yunhee said with a slightly sad voice. “You don’t have a mom?” Kevin looked worried. Yunhee shook her head. “She died in an... Accident.” Kevin made a pouty face. “That’s so sad.. I wouldn’t know what to do without mine.” Yunhee just smiled. “Well my dad has always been there, even when I had girl trouble.” Kevin looked over at Yunhee. “I bet he was the one who taught you to fight.” Yunhee nodded as she laughed a bit. “No wonder you are so strong.” Kevin flashed a warm smile as he drank the last of his coke. “Well I’ll have to leave now. I have a piano lesson.” Kevin gave Yunhee a tight hug. “Call me tonight.” Yunhee nodded and waved goodbye as Kevin took off on his bike.

Yunhee’s eyes went wide as she saw the outside of her new home. It looked so expensive and big. “I’m living here?” Yunhee asked as she stood out of the car. “Yes. It’s the Kim family.” Yunhee’s dad said as he fixed his tie. “Are they rich?” Yunhee looked to her dad for an answer. “Yes, but don’t mention it like that. That’s rude.” Yunhee mumbled a ”sorry” under her breath. Yunhee stood beside her dad as he rang the doorbell. The door opened and a catlike young guy stood before them. Yunhee recognized him from her own class. “AJ? You live here?” AJ flashed a kind smile. “Hi Yunhee.” AJ waved at her. Yunhee’s dad then looked down at her. “You know Jaeseop?” Yunhee nodded. “We are both in the same class.” Her dad nodded. AJ bowed to greet them properly. “Please come in, my parents are in the kitchen.” They followed AJ to the kitchen. Yunhee couldn’t help but gasp at how good the house looked on the inside. “They have arrived.” AJ said as he entered the kitchen. Mrs Kim rushed over to hug Yunhee. “Oh look at this pretty young lady. You can just call me auntie, okay Yunhee?” Yunhee shyly hugged back and nodded. Mr Kim came up and gave her hand a tight shake as he told her to call him uncle. “Not to be rude.” Yunhee said. “But is it okay if I start putting my stuff inside? I have a big essay for tomorrow that I’m not done with because of all the moving.” Mrs Kim gave her a kind smile. “Of course you can do that. AJ will show you to your room.” Yunhee gave a thankful smile and followed AJ out to the hall.

“This is your room.” AJ opened a door to a big light room. “Your dad told us which colours you liked so we picked the furniture out according to that.” Yunhee’s eyes went wide. They had matched her style perfectly. She had a big bed with dark purple bed sheets and she had a green mini couch and a beautiful desk that had a matching bookcase. “This is amazing! Thank you, it’s completely my style.” Yunhee flashed a big smile which made AJ look away. “She’s as pretty as ever.” AJ walked out of the room to the hallway. “The bathroom is over there. You have to share with my brother and I, we are not done with renovating the other bathroom yet.” Yunhee nodded. “No problem.” Yunhee gave a thumps up as started to walk down the stairs to start getting her things inside.

“Please take good care of my daughter.” Her dad said as he ran his fingers through Yunhee’s hair. “Don’t worry.” Mr Kim said as he gave a gentle smile. “She is in the best hands.” Mrs Kim said as she took Yunhee in an embrace. “I love you and I’ll miss you. Remember to call me when you land.” Yunhee said as she gave her dad a peck on the cheek. “I will. I love you too sweetie.” Yunhee felt her eyes get teary. She held it in. She didn’t want her dad to worry. “Have a safe trip.” Yunhee waved goodbye as her dad drove off. She felt some tears fall down her cheek.

This was the beginning of Yunhee’s new life.
