THREE MONTHS EARLIER

 

“OPPA!” Her voice booms on the other end of the line that I had to pull my mobile phone away from my ear. But despite of how loud this girl could get, she never fails to make me smile and make my heart flutter at the same time even just by hearing her voice.   “Yah! You nearly wrecked my ear drums, Song Victoria.” I snap at her jokingly as I pause the game that I’m playing.   “Mianhae, Oppa.” She now replies softly. I can imagine her now wearing that irresistible pout of hers and I could feel my cheeks flushing at the mere thought of it.   Actually, I feel like I’m blushing even more whenever she calls me ‘oppa’.  I’m actually the one who should be using the honorifics to her since she’s a year older than I am.   Yep, you heard it right. She’s my noona.   Actually, there’s a little story as to why it went the other way around. Victoria is actually Chinese. When she first came here to Korea last year to become a talent like me here in SM Entertainment, she didn’t have any friends back then. I happen to be the first one to approach her and Victoria was very cautious about using the honorifics because she knew how we, Koreans, are very strict about that. All along, she thought that she should address all the males here as ‘oppa’, regardless of the age.   I was a bit shocked when I heard her call me ‘oppa’ for the first time because I knew that she was older than I am and she knew likewise. She just looked so cute and innocent that I decided to play a trick on her. Besides, I really liked it when she addressed me as ‘oppa’.   When she found out that I’ve been tricking her, she didn’t get angry but she was a little miffed that she started hitting me on my arms, like a little kid wanting to escape from an unfamiliar person who happens to be cradling them.   Since then, we became the best of friends and we agreed to keep our own way of addressing one another.   As we became closer to one another, I started to fall for her each day and she has no idea about it.   Until now.   “Aish, you know Oppa can’t resist you, so it’s okay.” I reply back smiling to myself and I could hear her melodious cackle which soothes my ear a lot.   “So, what’s the fuss about? Why’d you call?” I tell her as I pour myself a glass of water.  All this playing is making me tired.   “Aniyo, Oppa. Can’t I call you when I’m free of problems?” She asks sounding a little offended. “If you want, then I’ll just call again when another problem arises. Goodbye!”   “YAH!” I shout with the biggest voice I could exert, hoping that she would get startled and won’t hang up on me.   And luckily, it worked. I smirk as I hear her sigh to her defeat.   “Come on, Vic. Don’t pull off that kind of drama with me.” I chuckle at her to lighten up the mood.“You know that I am and will always be there for you, whether you’re having problems or you’re having the greatest time of your life.” I say to her gently as I put my used glass on the sink.   “Aigoo, since when did Oppa learn to become so sweet?” She teasingly retorts back.   Ever since I started loving you, I keep the voice to myself.   “Well, would you prefer me to be a trash talker then?” I say as I try to distract myself from feeling too much happiness. I might give away myself at the wrong time, you know.   “Yah, remember that I’m still older than you are Cho Kyuhyun!” She reminds me sternly just like how my real noona would tell me. Her name is Cho Ara, by the way.   “So what? I always speak with a sharp tongue with my hyungs.” I answer back matter-of-factly.     “Well, except for Heechul Hyung.” I add right away before she can say it for me.  She knows how I always bully all of my hyungs except for Heechul Hyung. I tried to bully him once but I ended up getting pawned. End of story.   “Now what makes you think that you are an exception from my snarkiness?” I question her in a challenging manner.   “Hmm…” She pauses for awhile as she carefully thinks of her rebuttal. “Well, maybe because I’m your best friend and you know how y I could become once you ruin my very pleasant mood.” She now says straightforwardly.   “Okay, okay. I’ll stop now, noona.” I put an emphasis on the last word. I laugh as I sit down on one of the soft couches in the living room.   Ah, it feels so good, when you have the dorm all to yourself. Apparently, all of my hyungs are out today. They all have their own schedules, well except for me who is obviously here at home, Siwon Hyung and Donghae Hyung who went to the gym, which I strongly believe is just an alibi. Because the truth is they are going to stalk after the girl of their dreams and they are none other than---   Err, nevermind. I promised not to tell anyone about it…yet.   “Kyuhyun-ah,” Victoria veers my attention away from my own thoughts.   “Neh?”   “I have to tell you something very important. Can you meet me at the practice room later at 3pm?”   My heart starts to beat faster because of what she said. “What’s with all the suspense, Victoria? Can’t you spill the beans over the phone?” I try to ask casually despite of my insides shaking because of anxiousness.   “Tsk!” I hear her tongue click and she is probably rolling her eyes by now. “Just be patient, Oppa.  You’ll see. Trust me! This is purely good news.” I imagine her giving me a wink as those words come out of .   I look at clock hanging on the wall and I could see that I’ve got around 30 minutes to prepare. I let out a sigh and say, “Fine. I’ll see you after 30 minutes then. That better be really good.”   “It will be the greatest news you’ll hear!” She exclaims happily. “I’ll see you in awhile then, Oppa. You’re the best. Mwah!” Her lips make a smacking sound before she hangs up.   Greatest news I’ll ever hear, eh?   Well, at least that’s what she thinks. When she says something in the positive sense, its meaning for me is the opposite. What if she’s about to say the most dreaded words for me to hear? What if she and Nichkhun Horvejkul, that Thai-Korean boyfriend of hers for almost a year now, have patched things up already?   Well, it’s not that I’m enjoying it every time they get in a commotion or something but… I love Victoria and there’s no way I’m losing her to that son of a beast!   Besides, it’s not like they’re a married couple already, right? So there’s still hope left for me then. Kekeke.        “Nichkhun Oppa asked me to marry him already!” Victory is squealing with joy as she shows me her golden ring with its embedded jewels gleaming on her finger.   At that moment, I’m starting to feel as if my whole world has started to crumble down, as if a massive earthquake came for a visit.
