Stupid Assumptions

Lost in Translation

It’s still early in the morning when Vivian Wu left her comfortable pillow (her husband’s arm) and headed to the kitchen. It’s her routine: wake up early in the morning, prepare the breakfast, wake her husband up, and had breakfast together in the small table in their kitchen. She was still wearing her sleeping robe, with her hair being pulled to a bun, as she entered the kitchen and found something unusual. Someone’s using her kitchen and cooking there. It’s Kris, her one and only son.

“You keep planning to surprise me, huh?” she sweetly said as she gave him a peck on the cheek while slowly hugged him from the back.

“Good morning, the beautiful Vivian Wu” he replied with a bright smile. He still held the spatula on his right hand and the pancake dough on the other hand. “Pancake?”

“Did you also prepare some waffles? Your dad actually looking forward to eat my waffles this morning” she peeked on the plate, only pancake prepared.

“I planned to surprise both of you, so maybe I’d just take these…” he kneeled down to the cupboard under the island, taking the waffle maker and put it on the table. “And prepared waffles for dad”

Vivian let out a smile, it’s been a while she had a time like this with his son. Actually, she got used to this kind of situation. Earlier on her marriage life, her husband was never an easy man to see. He always had a bunch of meetings and various gathering to attend. Well, she still could accompany him for one or two gatherings, but for meetings outside the country, she couldn’t always followed as little Kris needed to be watched carefully.

She’s glad that she has Kris, because he’s her only getaway in life. She’s still 20 when she had him; and for a young woman living in State with her husband rarely around to keep her accompanied, it’s such a hard time. Later on, when the Wu’s property business getting stable and better each year, her husband started to reduce his activities but it’s time for her to let Kris out of her embrace. Similar like his father, the young Kris likes to do a lot of outdoor activities and keep himself busy. This habit was brought up until he joined university and finally worked on his own. For Kris was not really keen with property business, she let him chose what career he wanted to pursue.

She lost her time with him, especially when he’s working. She rarely saw him and when he moved out to his own apartment, Vivian realized that his son was already grown up. So when Kris suddenly decided to stay for a week back in their home, she couldn’t help but feeling really happy towards it.

Vivian watched Kris making the waffles, while secretly smiled as she sipped the tea on her glass.  She remembered how he used to follow her everywhere around the house, including the kitchen. He learned cooking from her and proud with her cook. Vivian missed his son and planned a lot of things to do with him on her mind.

“What’s with this beautiful smell?” a warm nice voice heard from the entrance of the kitchen. Both Kris and Vivian smiled to Charles Wu, the head of the Wu’s household. He walked in his sleeping robe also while brought the morning newspaper. His glasses were stayed on his nose, smiling warmly to Kris. While Vivian was a tall slender woman, Charles was not that tall, but he had this charismatic look on his eyes which inherited to Kris.

“We had a new chef here, I see…” he jokingly said, sitting on the table along with Vivian who gave him the coffee.

“It’s been a while since we had breakfast together, huh?” Kris said as he put the plate for each of his parents: pancake with maple syrup or his mother and a waffle with honey for his father.

“Smell nice” Charles said as he took a fork and knife, cutting the waffles. He ate a piece of it, “and surely tastes nice. Thanks, Son”

“I’m the one teaching him…” Vivian playfully said as she ate her pancakes in joy.

Kris joined his parents eating the breakfast. They talked a lot, joking around. He gang up with his father, teasing how her mother still couldn’t give up on shopping even though she’s on her 50’s now. They missed each other and took the breakfast as the best time to reunite.

It was sometimes in February, when the spring started to approach and the weather slightly getting better. But not for his heart, he’s never getting better even though she left him for more than a half year already.

That’s weird. And it caught Vivian’s attention.

“Kris, Honey…” she called him as she looked inside the reading room.

She found him there, holding a book while sleeping on the couch. He looked comfortable on his jeans and white shirt, along with a beanie on his head. He curled up his toes, hugging himself and the book tighter. She saw him being like this around summer, when she came back from Taipei. She remembered that he wanted to introduce her to his girlfriend who’s living in South Korea. But when she was back here, their story was somehow ended already. Maybe that explained why Kris suddenly hung around their home more often compared to previously. But him moving in for a week to their home was another story.

Vivian watched him sleep and softly caressed his cheek. She saw him in pain; she hoped she could get it away from him. Kris woke up as he felt her touch, slowly rubbed his eyes.

“Mom?” he said with a hoarse voice.

“Go sleep again. Move to your room Kris… It’s warmer there than here…” she said, smiling.

He stretched out his long arm, snuggling on the couch. He yawned and rubbed his eyes again, still feeling sleepy. “I must fell asleep when I read this…” he lifted the book and put it on his lap. “What’s up, Mom?”

“I’ve just talked to your father and while you’re still having a 5 free days, let’s take a holiday” she said in excitement.

“Where?”

She handed him a brochure from a tour agency. The name of the place was printed bold and big there: Hong Kong.

“Shopping again, huh?”

“Stop teasing me you little boy! No, it’s not only about shopping. We’re also going to see our family there. So pack your clothes, we’re heading there tomorrow morning” she winked at him.

Vivian stood up and smiled. “Oh and maybe, we can also set some blind date for you with the girls there…”

“Mom…” Kris warned her as he rolled his eyes.

“I think that’s a good idea! I couldn’t wait to have a grandchild… I will call my cousin” she said as she went out from the reading room, leaving a sleepy Kris there alone.

“Don’t you dare, Mom”

He could hear his mom was laughing over his words and kept saying that she will be a matchmaker for him. He looked at the brochure once again. Hong Kong. He noticed several notes that his mom made, she listed the places they’re going to visit. One of it was the Venetian in Macau. Kris felt his heart beat a little faster. The Venetian, it was in Macau. And in Macau …

“There’s a lot to see in here! I visited The Venetian last night, it’s really great… After the training, I’m extending my stay here hehehe…” she paused for a while. “Hmm… Do you want to take a look around later?”

Kris shook his head. He still remembered the thing that was happened almost 2 years ago.

“Kris Wu, you need to get a life”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"KRISSSSSS!"

A very loud sound heard from the hallway of the mansion. Kris ignored the voice and continued his deep sleep. He's been having a sleeping problem lately and been really grateful that once he arrived in Hong Kong, his body felt really tired and all he wanted to do was sleeping.

"Where's that boy?" the voice was heard pretty loud in front of Kris room. He knew whose voice that was, but he's too tired to respond so he kept silent while snuggling under the blanket. It's such a gloomy morning in Hong Kong, a very nice time to stay on bed.

Kris' room was opened and someone was running inside. "There you are... KRIS!"

"OH GOD AMBER!" Kris yelled as soon as he felt Amber's body landed on him. He came out from the blanket and looked at her with an annoyed expression. She moved herself from him, sitting on the other side of the bed with a big grin plastered on her face.

"Yay you're awake now! How dare you didn't tell me that you're going to stay here until weekend?" she smacked his arm and pinched his cheeks hard, totally ignoring Kris' annoyed face. He covered his face with both of his palm, frustrated with his unique cousin.

"It's mom's plan... I'm just following her" he answered with a hoarse voice. "And now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to take my sleep again in this goldly hour. So please, move" he pulled the blanket and sleep again, pushing Amber aside.

"No wayyy. Are you coming here just for sleep?" she said as she pouted, smacking him under the blanket.

"Yes, my body is really tired currently.. So I need a lot of sleep..." he responded weakly.

"Don't you want to see me? We haven't met for 2 years... I miss you, you know..."

Kris sneaked out from the blanket. Still with his eyes closed, he rubbed her hair softly. "Let me sleep first, okay?"

Amber chuckled and then left the bed. "You can go from me easily, but once your dear lovely girl come, you exactly now you won't have sleep right?"

"Oh don't mention her... Besides, I haven't seen her around the past two days here.."

"YIFAN!!!!"

Another voice was heard, this time it was louder and more like a high pitch note. Kris groaned while Amber laughed happily. Not too long after that, a light steps was heard. Another person barging into Kris' room and again, fell to his body. Kris couldn't help but groaned. Someone pulled the blanket and showed his sleepy face, it's the one and only Song Qian.

"Good morning, Love" she said sweetly, pecked his cheek with a morning kiss.

"Oh spare me. I'm off for breakfast" Amber said as she rolled her eyes and put her hands up. She went out from the room, heading to the kitchen. Victoria rolled over the bed, smiling widely to him.

"Don't 'Love' me" Kris said, taking his blanket. "If you love me, you'll let me sleep"

She chuckled while playing with her hair. "I've just arrived here this morning from Beijing and made you breakfast, how on earth you ditch me like that?" she complained, smack his arm. Kris groaned again, he got too many smacks in the morning.

"Ok, Girl. What do you want?" he gave up on her, changing his position from sleeping to sitting still on his sleepy face. He wondered how could he trapped with these kind of people in his family.

"Breakfast with me now" she smiled widely, pulling him from the bed. Kris mumbled but then stood up, combed his yellowish hair with his hand sloppily and followed her lead.

"You know, you do look y every time you wake up... Can I just marry you?" she pouted as they walked together in the alley, clutching her arms to his. He flicked her forehead.

"That would be " he simply replied, entering the kitchen. And it seemed like everyone was there: his mom, his aunts, uncles, several other cousins, and of course, his grandma. Amber was seen enjoying the toast that Victoria made.

"Yifan my darling, sit here..." his grandma called.

"Morning Mom.. Morning Granny" he kissed both of their cheeks and sitting between them.

"Qian..." The grandma called another grandchild of her.

The girl rolled her eyes and walked in hesitant. "Granny, it's Victoria or Vic. Why can't you call me like that?"

"Yifan didn't complain when I didn't call his English name" Grandma said softly as she touched her cheek. Kris stuck out his tongue to her while taking the toast.  "It's really nice to have breakfast with all of you"

"You successfully wake him up, Vic?" Kris' mom said, winked at Kris. He knew once he's back with the family, it'd be like this: being e and there.

"Sure Aunt... You should put 'ability to wake Kris up' as one of the requirements of your future daughter in law" Victoria replied, smiling widely.

"Oh please, meddling with others business... Hello, I'm here" Kris said as he ate the toast. Amber joined him, gave him a glass of chocolate milk.

"I added the salt into this, it'd taste great..." Amber said as she continued eating her toast. Kris coughed as she said that, making everyone looked at him.

"Are you okay?" Victoria asked as she patted his back carefully. Amber also patted his back, but it seemed more like punching rather than patting. He motioned an okay signal with his hands, taking the tissue and drank a glass of water.

"What's wrong?" his mom asked, looking at him with concern.

It's like déjà vu. The salted chocolate milk was done previously when Nana came to his place for breakfast. She gave him hocolate milk along with a pinch of salt, to make the taste of the chocolate getting better. He remembered that particular things she did. And it means, he remembered her again.

"Kris what's wrong?" Victoria's voice woke him up.

"Oh.. Uh... Nothing. I'm just choking..." he replied, a bit stuttered.

"Eat slowly..." his grandma said. Kris nodded, continued having his breakfast. Kris cursed inside, this was just too much. His inability to forget her burdened him. While he trapped with his memories of her, she probably already moved on and maybe not even remembered about their story. About him.

"Anyway Aunt Viv, are you going somewhere today?" Victoria asked Kris' mom.

"Hmm, no... I'll be just staying here with Grandma and your mom. I've done walking around the last two days"

"Walking around? You mean shopped, Mom?" Kris responded, teasing his mom.

"Oh stop you young man" she replied as she chuckled.

"So it's okay if me and Amber took Kris as our driver today, Aunt?" Victoria continued her question.

"Oh sure, you three haven't been hanging out lately right?"

"Okay, I'm the one who'll be the driver, mind asking me?" Kris playfully said to Vic. She rolled her eyes, stuck out her tongue.

"Yeay outing!!!" Amber happily yelled in the kitchen.

All of them laughing at her words. Yeah, hanging out with his family might be a great escape to help him forget about Nana. He could not let himself fall deeper and do nothing about it. Yeah, he's sure he could do that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kris walked inside the shopping mall along with Amber and Victoria. While Amber busy shopping for her hiking needs, Kris accompanied Victoria to the jewelry store. At first he didn't realize it, but a little later he felt like most of the staff in the store and the customers looked at him and Victoria. Probably they thought that Kris and Victoria were a couple. He often get that look a lot previously when he came to her university 4 years ago on her master graduation. People thought she's dating a junior.

"Can I see this one?" Vic appointed the ring with diamond on it.  She smiled happily as she tried the ring. "How do you think? This fits me right?"

"What is this for?" he blankly asked her.

"Is this good or no?" she asked him again. He nodded and mumbled "Beautiful".

"Okay, this is good then. Miss, please wrap it for me. Oh and I need the new measurement. I think my fingers getting thinner everyday" Vic said as she went to another room of the store.

Both went out from the store once she done ordered the ring. They're heading to the ice cream store where Amber went to. She's sheepishly running here and there making Kris and Vic having a hard time to accompany her.

"You haven't answered my question. What was that ring for?" he asked her again.

"My wedding ring" she simply said. Kris eyes grew bigger as he heard that.

"What wedding? And with whom?" Kris was shocked with this news. He hasn't met her for two years and suddenly she's about to marry? Well she's three years older than him, but... It seemed too fast.

Victoria smiled at him. "Surprised? Well me too..." she coughed a bit before continued talking. "He suddenly came to my life, Kris. I don't know if it's right or not, but I think I'll settle my life with him.. We're going to be married spring next year"

"And who is the guy?"

Again, Victoria smiling happily. "A guy I met at the social work. We're both into philanthropy thingy and even met several times in the event. It's already a year since we go out together and on the last new year's party, he popped the question" she giggled, remembered the day she's proposed.

"What did he do?"

"You asked really details just like my father... Businessman, he's working on a real estate area, just like your father. It's coincidence that he once learned about this business to your father back when he's studying in LA. He's actually a Thai people, but his mom is a Chinese. I'll introduce you both later when we visit LA, ok?"

"You love him?" he asked her. They might always bickered with each other, but Victoria is one of his closest cousins so he didn't want her to feel unhappy and made sure that she got what she wanted, including for her life partner.

"I guess so" She said as she nodding slowly. "If you want to meet someone every day and keep thinking about that person, or smiling and felt his presence even when he's not around, I think it's love, isn't it?"

He smiled to her, pulled her for a side hug and planted a kiss on her hair. "I'm happy for you, wishing you nothing but the best"

"Thank you, Love" she replied. He hissed at her words.

"Don't 'Love' meeee" he complained as they laughed and walked together. "Anyway, where's the ice cream store?"

"Oh we have to go out from the mall and then crossed the road. You know Amber, she loves exploring places..." Vic replied as they went out from the mall.

Amber was schooling in New York previously but once she graduated she chose to stay in Hong Kong while Vic originally living in Beijing up until now. It's only Kris family living in US, the other family resided in London and Paris. They rarely met in a year, so when they meet, usually they hung out together in group.

"Drizzle..." Kris mumbled as he opened the umbrella and walked together with Victoria. It started raining when Vic gasped and realized that she left one of her shopping bags in the jewelry store. She told Kris to go first because Amber was alone waiting in the ice cream store while she went back with her own umbrella.

Kris continued walking passed the wet road. The road was quiet crowded despite the rain. He regretted left his jacket on the car while he only wore a white shirt and jeans in this heavy rain, he felt really cold now. It's getting darker and the rain seemed to get bigger every time he walked, it's really hard to see. But in the middle of the road, he saw someone familiar which made him stopped walking.

He blinked his eyes several times at that person. He saw Nana there. Was it reality or his imagination of her getting wilder every day? If it's her, what on earth was she doing here in Hong Kong? Kris watched the girl running under the rain, her clothes was drench and her hair fell in her shoulder and forehead. She looked lost and cold.

As he watched her, she stopped running and looked at his direction. Somehow Kris felt uncomfortable and afraid if that person was not her so he lowered his umbrella until she couldn't see her. Kris felt his heart beating hard, he's sure it's her. He looked at her again, but all he saw now was a guy covering her head with a baseball jacket and pulled her together with him to a car that's coming in front of them. They got in the car and left.

Was it her or not? Who's that guy?

Nana, is that you?

"Hatchew!" Kyungpyo sneezed for the nth times this morning. He hugged his body tightly with his arm that's covered with blanket. Yesterday when he was going with Nana, both of them drenched in rain. He's getting fever at night, but then he got better once he took a rest. Kyungpyo sipped the hot chocolate on the glass, enjoying the warmth of it. His phone was ringing, he took it and smiled. It was Nana.

"Hi, Nana" he greeted her happily.

"Hello... Mmm... How are you? Are you okay?" she asked in worry. Kyungpyo smiled as she asked him like that.

"I'm fine. You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine... Anyway, are you still going to come to the hotel?"

"Yes, I'll pick you up and send you to the airport... just like our plan yesterday. Any problem?"

"Well, I have another plan. I'm going to meet an acquaintance at the restaurant in the hotel, so I think it'd be better if we meet there later? I'm going to have brunch with them now..."

"So, is it still possible to ask you for lunch before your flight?" he sneakily asked. She giggled at his question.

"Sure. I'll make sure not to eat too much on the brunch... Hehe. So, see you?"

"Yeah, see you..."

Kyungpyo clapped his hand in glory. He didn't knew that their relationship growing fast just in two days. Well he didn't dare to put a high expectation that she might fell for him, but at least, he could tell that they're getting closer to each other. At first, he's afraid that she'll be awkward with him. But it didn't happen. Nana, to his surprise, was so open and made him feeling really comfortable around her. Somehow, he just didn't want to stop meeting her.

Once she ended the call, Nana looked at her phone in silence. She bit her lower lips. She smiled again over a phone call when she previously couldn't do it. It's been a while since she wanted to call someone and talk. And arrange a meeting, just for brunch, movie, or lunch date. Kyungpyo somehow was a nice company though. But it's too early, too early, she thought.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Fei, I'm in the toilet now. Are you done with your client?" Nana talked to Fei, her fellow makeup artist friend, on phone. She's retouched her makeup, adding some lipstick and powder.

"We're done talking now. Are you going to back to the table? We still have a lot of things to catch up!" Fei replied.

"Yes, I'm on my way back to the restaurant. See you in minutes" Nana said as she ended the call.

It's her last day in Hong Kong. Jaejoong who previously planned to go back with her to Seoul "suddenly" canceled; he directly went back to Seoul after he spent a night in Macau. Nana knew it must have been his plan with Hyunjoong, as both tried their best to hook up Nana with Kyungpyo. So now, Nana was left all alone in Hong Kong before Kyungpyo later pick her up to the airport.

She's already checked out from the hotel and put all of her luggage at the concierge. Before left the hotel, she made a time to have brunch with Fei whom she closed to for the past three years. She accompanied Fei meeting with her client, the daughter of a famous Chinese restaurant owner.

She's a special client, Fei stated, as she's a rich little princess but refused to be too spoiled with herself. Nana was pleased to meet her though, just like what Fei said, she's simply beautiful and modest, yet she still shown the pride of her prestigious bloodline.

Nana was just entered the lobby when she accidentally dropped her gift bag for Fei. She's so panicked because it's a set of perfumes, she's afraid it might be break. Before she picked it up, a hand took the bag and both stood up. Nana was frozen in her current position, unable to blink her eyes. She's now afraid that she's having a daydreaming.

"So it's true, you're here..." Kris said in relief. "It's safe" He let out a small smile, giving her the gift bag. She slowly took the bag from his hand, stared at him in surprise.

There's a long silence between them before Kris coughed, waking her up. "Kris... You're here?"

"Yeah, I’m here. How long have you been in Hong Kong?"

"Ermm ... 4 days… I came here with Jae though, but he's now back already to Seoul..." she replied. Nana cursed inside as she seemed to be too excited to speak with Kris. She just basically blurted everything. Kris was seen smile again to her. "How about you?" she shyly asked.

"I'm with my mom, visiting our relatives... Going back to LA tonight..."

They both stared at each other and smiled again. Nana crazily held her fist at the side of her body, couldn't hide her excitement upon seeing Kris. Not too much different from her, Kris was also suppressed his wide smile once he spotted her. His eyes weren't playing with him. He just knew that it was her when he saw her passed the lobby. These two were playing cool to each other.

The silence was broken by the call from Fei. Nana forgot that she still have to meet her back on their table inside the restaurant.

"Kris, really sorry. I still have to meet my friend in the restaurant, so… Talk to you later?" she said, a bit hesitant.

He nodded. "Yeah, I have to go too..."

Both waved but then Nana realized that Kris was heading to the restaurant also. She gave him a 'you-are-coming-here-too-?' look and just like he knew what she said, he nodded. She chuckled and then walked to the middle area of the restaurant where Fei and her client seen. Nana waved at her and made it to the table.

She's then sitting and looked surprised. Kris also gave a surprise look to her. He came to the same table as her.

Oh God, what does he want? Is he following me?

"Oh, who's this?" Fei asked Kris, making her client turned around and smiled widely.

"Finally you came! Kris, this is Fei, the makeup artist that I've been talking about. She'll be the one doing the make up for the wedding" Victoria said as she introduced Kris to Fei. "Oh and meet Fei's friend, Nana" Victoria smiled to Nana.

Kris and Nana were both confused how to react to. They decided just to nod to each other while Nana looked for Kris' eyes. He was about to smile to her, but Nana immediately looked away.

Is he...going to marry her? So this is the groom that Victoria been talking about? Kris...is about to be married?

Blood seemed to leave Nana's face. She looked pale than ever and somehow she squeezed the napkin on her lap tighter as she didn't know where to hold on to. Kris noticed the changed on her face, he looked worriedly to her.

What's wrong with her? Is she okay? Why it seemed like she just saw a ghost?

Nana missed what Victoria and Fei talked later on, she couldn't hide the pain in her heart as soon as she knew that Kris was going to marry Victoria. And in the middle of this chaotic talk in her mind, she heard a familiar voice.

"Nana, are you done?"

Nana lifted her chin and found the source of the voice. It's Kyungpyo who stood next to her on the table. He smiled towards her, nodded to Fei and everybody else in the table. Kris looked at him with a furious stare.

Who is he? Is he the guy from yesterday?

"Yeah..." Nana managed to reply. "Fei, Darling... Really sorry, but I'm going to left earlier to the airport. I think we should talk again later on? Phone me?" Nana said with regret.

"That's too bad. After this, I'll have to go to another hotel also... I have another appointment. So see you when I see you?" Fei replied as she hugged her and kissed her cheek. Nana nodded and weakly smiled.

She stood up from her seat and waved to Victoria. "See you again, Vic. It's nice to talk to you. Good luck with your wedding..." she said the last word almost in whisper. Nana couldn't look at Kris; she merely nodded and just left.

"Oh, yeah. Thanks, Nana. Hope to see you later on when I visited Seoul later" Victoria cheerfully replied.

Nana didn't look at Kris when she walked passed him with Kyungpyo. He escorted Nana to go out from the restaurant while chatting a bit. Kris watched them with a hurt heart. He didn't like how the guy walked closely to Nana and how Nana easily clutched her hand to his arms. That's supposed to be him, not that guy.

Is this the reason why she's not coming back with Jae? She's with another guy? So I'm the stupid one here I guess... I waited for her, and here she is... With another guy. Oh Kris. You're doomed.

"Are you okay?" Kyungpyo asked Nana as he drove the car.

Nana didn't say anything, just nodded slowly. She's till at lost. She's just feeling happy when she saw him earlier, but just when she thought that this meeting meant 'something', her dream about him was just crushed. Kris was about to be married and not to her.

"Are you sure? I think you got the fever from yesterday?" Kyungpyo said as he touched her forehead. No fever. "Have you eaten?"

"Yes... I just... I just..." Nana stopped talking. She couldn't handle it anymore, she's just crying. She remembered the last time she cried badly like this was when her grandpa died. She didn't care with everything else, even Kyungpyo. She couldn't stop her tears, it kept flowing. Kyungpyo couldn't say anything; he parked the car to the side of the road.

He didn't know what to do, so he just watched her crying. He realized she looked really broken in this condition. Kyungpyo didn't understand where this motive came from, but his mind told him to hug her, so he hugged her and put her head to his shoulder.

"Kyungpyo..." Nana hesitated to accept his hug. Her palm was placed on his chest, stopping him from hugging her fully.

"My brother used to do it to me once when I was crying. I'm just trying to comfort you. Tell me if you're not feeling comfortable after I hug you, okay?" and by that he wrapped his arm to her shoulder.

Nana was still crying when she felt her head touched Kyungpyo's shoulder. It's warm, far from her thought that the hug probably felt weird. She's then slipped her hand to his back. Her problem was not solved, but her chest finally felt at ease once she cried.

Go Kyungpyo... Thank you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria walked to the chair where Kris and his mom sitting, waiting for their flight. She found Kris looked lost and empty. He didn't say anything ever since they left the restaurant in the afternoon and she sensed that something was not right. While Kris' mom talked to her mom, she came to Kris and dragged him to another seat in the airport.

"Spill the truth" she gave him a demanding tone. "Don't you dare lie to me, Kris. What happened?"

"What?" he coldly replied.

"What happened before you saw me in the restaurant? Why you suddenly stopped talking and looked like you're lost. You're not you"

"Is it that obvious?"

Victoria raised her eyebrows. "There’s something happened earlier, right?"

Kris covered his face with both of his palms. He sighed, breathe deeply. "I met her" he mumbled but Victoria managed to hear.

"Who?"

"Remember the girl that I've been talking about for the past year?"

Victoria tried to remember the girl that Kris talked about. There're not too many girls in his life though. She recalled several girls and then snapped her fingers.

"The one that made you flew to Seoul out of the blue?" she guessed, pretty sure with her answer. He let out a small smile, nodded. She gasped with her lips forming an O.

"You met her here? In Hong Kong?"

"Yeah, I saw her this afternoon, with you”

“With me? Who…Oh my God!” Victoria gasped pretty loud. She squeezed Kris’ arm tightly. “Was she…. Nana?”

Kris nodded, sighing.

“Oh how come you didn’t tell me about her? Shoot!”

“No problem. I met her before I saw you and we talked. And she looked fine, Vic. I mean, she's just like the last time I saw her. It's almost a year ago, the day I sent her to the airport. I thought everything was just the same. Even the way I responded to her presence, it's just the same. She's the one who changed" He stopped talking, taking another breath.

"She didn't like you anymore?"

He shook his head. "Maybe? I saw her with a guy. Even when we out for shopping yesterday, I saw her too. I guess the guy was the same. So, yeah..." he shrugged his shoulder, playing with his fingers.

Victoria slowly patted his shoulder. She never saw him this broken. In her eyes, Kris was one of the happy soul she ever seen. Yes he's sometimes act too straight or too flat, but he's far from gloomy. He's cheerful and builds a nice environment when she's around him. So when she saw him being sulked like this, she couldn't bear it.

"I'll be fine, right?" he asked her, looking at her with a doe eyes.

"You'll be fine, Kris. You'll be fine..." she said as she caressed his cheek softly.

He turned to her for a hug. "Am I too cheesy?" he whispered as he hugged her, making both of them laughed.

"Too cheesy for a big guy like you, Love" She replied as she slowly rubbed his back.

He rolled his eyes again, pulled himself from her. "Stop with the 'Love' Vic!" he pinched her cheeks.

"You look better when you smile, you know?"

Kris nodded proudly. "Yeah, I know"

"You narcissistic prince!" she joked on him. Kris and Vic laughed again, forgetting the serious talked that they had earlier. He felt a bit better when he talked to Vic, hoping that the burden won't be come back anytime soon.

It's midnight already in Hong Kong when the plane took off. Before he slept, Kris still managed to see several stars in the sky. Again, it reminded him to Nana on the day they went to the observatory in LA.

It should be the same sky like the one I saw in LA, but are they the same stars? Mom once said on cloudy days we can’t see the stars, but I don't really care. In my memories every day is a fine day, so I can see the stars. You can see the stars. And it will be so in the future.

I hope you're happy, Im Jinah.

Good night, Love.
