Wonderwall

Lost in Translation

“Maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me.

And after all, you’re my wonderwall”

OASIS

Kris Wu lived his 29 years of life in perfection. He likes everything that’s organized and under control. His habit, his hobby, his work; all were organized perfectly, leaving no space for mess. He got all of his shirt grouped based on the color, the music cd that were all put based on the alphabet, and so many weird classification that only Kris understand. But he likes it; being organized.

He’s also loved being in charge. Kris was forever appointed to lead anything; either a class head or the basketball leader, he did it all. That’s why he didn’t have any problem when he should lead the team in Macau. Either the person is older or younger than him, he managed to control everything. But for this time, he couldn’t have himself controlled over his emotion.

Somehow, he woke up earlier just to check if Nana is still online or not so he will have a chance to talk to her. Yeah, it’s boring, talking to the screen; but he likes the way they talked about anything randomly. Well, Kris actually was not that straightforward though, he had this playful side of him also. It’s just he didn’t really show it when he’s in the office, but Nana managed to make him do things out of his will. But to her favor, he likes to do it.

He admitted that he developed an interest on her. His prediction, who previously thought that all things happened in Macau won’t go anywhere, proven to be wrong. First week talking to her, it felt just like a normal friend chat. They talked about the weather, each other country, and work. Yeah, Kris couldn’t believe he talked about the weather with her, but they did talk about it. The third week, they started to talk more about personal things.

Nana likes warm weather, she dislikes cold. She’s a makeup expert, and even got a certificate for that. Similar to him, she’s also the only child in the family; so he understood a lot when her mom nagged her for not coming home too late. They exchanged pictures through email or messengers. Most of her pictures were just beautiful, for Kris. And they exchanged number too, but Kris has no gut yet to call her. So when his phone was ringing randomly so early in the morning and the caller ID showed Nana’s name, Kris couldn’t help but feeling suddenly ecstatic.

“Hello?” he managed to say after he cleared his throat. The background sound was too loud and all Kris could hear was people cheering. “Hello? Nana?” he said again, slightly changing his sleeping position to sitting, leaning his back to the wall on his bed.

“Uh… Hi. Hello?”

Kris smiled as he heard her voice. “Hi, Miss Im”

“Kris? Is this you?” Nana replied with a loud voice. “Wait a minute I need to go out from this room…” Kris heard a noise but then it’s gradually getting quite. “Kris?”

“Yes?”

“Umm.. Sorry. Are you sleeping now?” she asked, sounded well than previously. Kris caught hesitant on her voice.

“No, just awake” he smoothly said. Truth was, yes, he’s sleeping but then she called. Despite his tired body and sleepy eyes, he’d still prefer to talk to her.

“So, where are you? Aren’t you supposed to be sleeping at home?” he looked at the bedside table and calculated for a while. “It’s around midnight there now, huh?”

“Yes, it’s midnight already. I’m having a farewell party for my friend… We’re in the club now…”

Well now that explained the loud sound, Kris thought. “Oh okay… So?”

“Hmm.. Nothing…” she hung her words for a while. “Umm… How are you?”

Kris smiled again. He knew she’s being awkward to him; maybe he should put a little effort to make her feeling comfortable. “I’m fine. How about you?”

“I’m fine too. It’s just the work make me crazy…” she paused. “Oh my God, what did I do? Why would I suddenly talking about work? Hahaha.. I’m sorry, Kris”

“No, it’s fine… You’re already got your work done, while me… I’m about to go get ready for work…” he let out a laugh to her. “You’re from the future”

“Hmm?” she replied in confused. “Future? What future?”

“We are 17 hours apart and you’re ahead than me, so you’re from the future…”

“Stop the dry jokes, Kris” she replied as both laughed. Nana knew that Kris often throw silly jokes, but she still laugh at it. They suddenly stopped talking and just listening to the air.

“Umm.. So…”

“Yeah, so…”

Kris waiting for her to say something, but he heard nothing. So he cleared his throat again, signaling her that he’s still there. Before he could speak, he heard voices in Korean. It seemed that Nana talked to her friends, not too long after that, she talked again on the phone.

“Kris, I think I’ll have to hang up. We’re going to leave now…”

“Oh, okay... Sure. Take care. Bye!” he ended the call.

“Yeah… Take care. Bye…” she said.

“Thanks for calling, Nana. Gomawoyo” he said goodbye in Korean, the things that he learned from his cousin who loves Korean drama.

Nana chuckled. “You don’t have to put the ‘yo’ when you speak with me, I’m younger than you. Just say ‘gomawo’” she said, correcting him.

“Hmm, should learn more about Korean then…” he replied, adding another laugh.

“Yeah, later Kris… Ok, bye”

“Bye”

Kris still on the line, waiting for her to end the call, but then he heard her voice again. “Nana?”

“Yes?”

“Aren’t you going to go?”

“Why you didn’t hang up?” she asked him.

“Uh? Well, I said bye already… So, bye?”

“Yes, bye…”

“You hang up first, Nana..” Kris insisted.

“Why?”

“Well, just hang up… We said good bye already, right?”

Nana laughed at his words. Kris followed her, laughing. “Ok, so who’ll end the phone call first?” he asked.

“You first” she said. Kris shook his head, decided to not obeying her.

“No, you first” he replied back. He heard she chuckled and a bit laughing.

“Hmm… Ok, bye Kris…” she hesitantly ended up the call.

“Yes, Nana. Bye..”

He heard the phone was being ended.

“See you again, Nana” he said to the dead air. He put his phone back to the bedside table and then took one of the pillows, hugging it hard while rolling on his bed. He still had one more hour to sleep before waking up to his jogging time, one more hour to wondering about Nana. Kris closed his eyes with a big wide smile.

While Kris went sleeping, Nana looked dazed to her phone at the emergency stairs. Due to the loud music at the club, she had to move there in order to speak well to Kris. She should be grateful when Lizzy, the intern at her department, decided to take Nana’s phone and dialed Kris’ number. At first, Nana was dead crazy as soon as she saw the phone was connected to Kris’. But after she heard his voice, everything went blank and all she wanted to do was saving their conversation.

Nana still looked at her phone, smiling. It’s two months already since they met in Macau and she had no idea how that meeting could end like now. She giggled and tapped her feet excitedly.

“Gotcha!” Yoona said as she jumped to sit next to Nana. “Wasn’t Lizzy come here already to tell you that we’re going to leave?”

“Oh, yeah. Let’s go!” Nana stood for her seat, gaining a laugh from Yoona. “Why? Is there anything wrong?” she asked in confused.

Yoona shook her head while closing . “It’s truly love, I guess?”

“What?”

“Lizzy said that you’re having a hard time to end the phone call with him…” Yoona said as she winked. Nana blushed and touched her cheeks softly.

“Well… Uh, come on let’s go!” she took Yoona’s hand, making her stood up.

“I took back my words, Nana. You’re not too early for love. I started to believe that yeah… you fall in love with him” Yoona said when they walked pass the alley of the club. Nana playfully hit Yoona’s arm.

“Oh shut up!”

Yoona kept laughing, ignoring the shy Nana. She bites her lips, holding her smile. Deep down inside, she agreed with what Yoona’s said but she’s kind of scared to admit it now. But then…

Am I really falling in love with you, Kris?

“Team Leader Zhang, your travel approval” Krystal handed a letter to Lay and left his desk.

“Thank you, Krystal” he replied, waving the letter to her as he smiled. Tao shook his head and chuckled at Lay.

“Seriously, I fell for you. I thought you’re a shy person, turned out, you’re flirtier than Chen” he said as he turned his face to the laptop again.

Lay frowned to Tao, but decided to ignore him. Not too long after that, he walked to Tao’s area. There he smiled widely. “What’s up?” Tao asked him.

“Travel time ~~~”

“Yeah we heard that, Lay. Isn’t it what Krystal said earlier?” Kris responded to Lay’s words.

“That’s the point. I’m going to meet my other team. You know… the Commercial team…” Lay said, winked to Kris. He frowned as he looked at Lay.

“So?”

Tao, again, shook his head as he heard Kris’ responds. “I fell for you also. I thought you’re smart in any area, but… “Tao stopped his words, sighing.

“I’ll be attending a meeting with the Commercial team” Lay informed. “In Seoul…” he added with a dramatic pressure on word ‘Seoul’.

By the mention of Seoul, Kris slightly glanced at Lay but then decided to ignore him. “Do your job well then and happy travel” he said as he stood up from his desk, taking his laptop to the meeting room. “Huang Zitao, aren’t you going to join the teleconference now?”

“Coming…” Tao said as he prepared his laptop and notebook.

“Hey...” Lay hold Tao’s hand, paused him before walking. “Bet that he’ll join me to Seoul or not?”

Tao hummed for a while. “100 bucks if he joins you to Seoul”

Lay frowned and pouted “Ya, I also bet that he’ll join me…”

“200 bucks if he didn’t go to Seoul!” Chen excitedly yelled to Tao and Lay, making the other at the room looked at them.

“Quite a catch though” Lay said. “Ok, let’s see what’s happening later on, Guys!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kris was just going back to his apartment. Even though his parents living in the same city with him, he already moved out from their home since he’s 20. He used to get to live alone and do everything by himself; but lately, he developed a habit to “report” his day to none other than Nana. Well, he occasionally called his mom just to tell her that he’s okay, or when he’s cooking some food and need guidance from her, anything. But after the first call made by Nana, he dared himself to call her.

It’s not easy though, because when he’s about to call her, he needs to calculate her time; she could be in a deep sleep when he called her and of course, he didn’t want that. Sometimes, she called him an hour before his waking up time; but still, he managed to take the call and talk to her. They talked about nothing though, they’re just kept talking. Kris chuckled as he remembered when he’s once called her just to say that he’s out of the office because he got a bad indigestion.

Kris lay on his lazy chair, turning on the TV while randomly chose the channel. Nothing excites him, except for his phone. He checked it for several times; there’s nothing from Nana. She hasn’t text or tweet or chat him for the whole day, and he’s getting curious. He’s hesitated for a while before calling her, because it’s probably around 2 AM now in Seoul. He scrolled over his phone for several times, decided to ignore it and focused on the TV once more.

It took him only a second to take his phone again and dialed Nana’s number. He didn’t care, he’s somehow just want to hear from her; if she’s asleep and not picking up, he’s fine with that, at least he tried to call her.

The phone was ringing for 5 times, but there’s no sign that it’ll be picked by Nana. Just before Kris ended the call, Nana’s voice was being heard. He felt his heart thumped, getting excited just to hear her hoarse voice.

“Hel-lo?” she said in such a weak tone.

“Hi…” he said. “Nana?”

“Mom?” she replied, still in a hoarse voice. “Mom, why did you call this late?”

Kris couldn’t hold his laughter. How come she thought that her mom is calling her instead of him?

“Nana, it’s me… Kris” he said. “Are you asleep?”

Kris heard a mumbled as replied. “Mom? How come you know Kris? I never mentioned about him to you…” Again, Nana did a sleep-talking.

“Because I’m Kris and not your mom, Nana” he said again. “Nana, do you want me to hang up?”

“Hmm? Hang out? No, I never hang out with Kris, Mom… He’s not even here… Mom, why you…” Nana paused with a big yawned. “Why you asked about Kris?”

Kris chuckled. He really enjoyed this. He laughed, just to hear Nana’s silly answer. It seemed like she’s really sleeping and thought that it’s dream. Kris stopped talking, he heard her breathing; she’s sleeping again with her phone on her ears. He’s a bit not sure to talk or not, as he’s really enjoying listening to her breath.

Kris stayed like that for a while, not ending the phone call. He opened his email and looked at Nana’s picture that she sent two days ago. She parted her hair into two and braided it. Her expression was really cute and Kris couldn’t stop looking at the pictures. Again, a smile formed by Kris’ lips. It’s seemed that what Chen said was true; he’s smiling often ever since his meeting with Nana.

Kris took his phone, listening to Nana’s breath once again before finally ended the call.

“What you’ve done to me, Im Jinah?”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nana brought her laptop back to her desk and jotted down several important points resulted in the meeting. She and her team had just had a meeting for the Commercial Area, along with her supervisor, Kim Jaejoong. The meeting was quite special as the representatives from LA office also coming. Nana knew that there’s no way Kris would be joining the meeting, but from what he said to her through chat, the representatives from his office were all his friends.

She remembered she mistakenly talked to Huang Zitao, the one from Raw Material Department, when she met him at the training in Macau. She thought he was Zhang Yixing, just because she misheard Zhang for Huang. She supposed to meet Zhang Yixing at the training, but because there’s a problem in the China factory, he couldn’t attend there. Nana saw Yixing earlier at the meeting, but because he’s still busy talking to her boss, she couldn’t greet him properly.

“Hi!”

Nana looked at her right and found Zhang Yixing stood next to her. He beamed a smile, waving at her. “Im Jinah, right?”

Nana stood up from her desk, but Yixing stop her. “No, no. It’s fine. Just sit comfortably” he said, still smiling.

“We previously didn’t meet” Nana said, smiling back to him.

“Oh yeah, but I do hear a lot about you”

“Hmm? Oh about me mistakenly think that Huang Zitao is you? Really sorry, I must be so sleepy back then I thought he’s you…” Nana bowed to him politely.

Yixing chuckled. “No, it’s fine though. Anyway, my friend said hi to you”

“Your friend?”

“Wu Yi Fan” Yixing said, smiling mischievously. “Or Kris. You know him, right?”

“Oh, sure. We met at Macau…” she replied coolly. There’s no way she would let Kris’ friends teasing her about him.

“Hmm okay, anyway about the meeting result that we’ve just had… I’m looking forward to work with your team, Miss Im. Cheer up!” Yixing saluted her and left her desk. He’s then headed to Jaejoong’s room for further discussion.

“I think Kris talked about you a lot with his friends” Yoona suddenly appeared at Nana’s desk.

“I do think so, Unnie” Lizzy tagged along with Yoona. “He must have been really like you…” Nana flicked Lizzy’s forehead.

“Stop teasing me you guys” she said as she turned to her laptop again.

Yoona and Lizzy giggled when they back to their seat but then gossiping as they saw Yixing passed their seat and waved to them. Nana shook her head and ignored Lizzy who gave sign to her to wave at Yixing. She smiled to herself, how funny her friends were when they knew that she’s currently in love with a guy mile away.

Nana looked at her phone and saw that Kris was texting her.

From  : Kris Wu

Text me please when you’re off from your office :)

She frowned at his text; it’s supposed to be midnight in LA. She ignored the text and continued to clean up some of the work before preparing to off from the office. It’s Friday and she already booked her favorite spa place to relax. She planned to go to her grandma’s place on the weekend, along with her parents. It’s been a while since she spent her time with them; because her life frantically separated only into her job and some parties.

Nana get off first from the office; leaving Yoona and Lizzy who’s waiting for Jaejoong to go out together. She remembered about Kris’ text, so she texted him informing that she’s off from the office. Not too long after that, Kris called her. She decided to take the call and hear the glorious voice of Kris.

“Hey…” he said in a deep low tone.

“Hello there… Not sleeping yet?” she said as she stepped out from the elevator. Nana fixed the position of her shawl; she prepared herself before going out from the building. The cold autumn wind made her shivered and she didn’t want to get cold.

“Hmm. I’m sleepy, but I have to be awake...” he hung his answer.

“And why?”

“Because I’m going to give a surprise…” again, Kris hung his answer.

Nana chuckled as she heard his reply.

“Who is the lucky person to get surprise from you in the midnight?”

“Hmmm. I don’t know if that person is lucky or not, but yeah… It’s you”

She rolled her eyes before opening the main door of her office. “Me? What am I going to get as a surpri−“

Nana stopped talking and immediately frozen. She blinked her eyes several times, holding tighter to her phone. Standing tall in front of her, Kris waved his phone to her. He looked awesome on grey t-shirt covered with a green jacket and a shawl on his neck. He smiled to her, the same smile she remembered the last time she saw him in Macau.

Nana felt her heart beat went faster than ever and her knees were seemed to give up on her. She felt her face getting warmer as soon as he approached her; he looked awkward at first, but getting comfortable once Nana smiled back to him.

“Kris…?” she said in an unsure tone.

“So, surprised?” he asked her, tried to hide his excitement over seeing her shocked face.

Nana slowly nodded and suddenly remembered the words that Luhan once said to her when they’re strolling around Macau.

“Save your heart for someone who leaves you breathless, Nana”

Somehow she felt like that as soon as she saw Kris.

Breathless.
