Lost in Translation

Kris circled Nana’s waist with his left hands as he looked directly to her. Nana, on the other side, looked away from Kris as she touched her tiny tiara. Her white gown and dramatic make up along with a simple yet beauty bun made her looked really gorgeous on his eyes. The gown hugged her curved body tightly, showing the beautiful body of Nana; not to mention her killer heels, which made her looked more appealing although she wore a dress with such a long tail on the back of it. For seconds, Kris kept his stare at her, enjoying the view in front of him. Nana then turned her head to Kris’ direction, looking at him in the eye, and then smiled. They kept looking at each other for seconds and after that…

“Ok, I think it’s enough for the afternoon shoot. We’ll take another photo at night.” the photographer said as he took of the camera, smiling to the couple across him. The makeup artist and wardrobe director busily moved their stuff to the van that awaited them, joining the other team of the pre-wedding photo shoot.

The smile between Nana and Kris faded. He slowly released his hand from her, loosened the tie on his formal suit, looking away from her. Nana was just doing the same; she took space from him and walked first, leaving him on the stair at the gate of an old building in Macau. Both were not talking, doing their own stuff.

Victoria came to Nana as she helped her to walk on her long dress along with the makeup artist. She smiled to Nana and asked her if she had problem walking but Nana just shook her head softly, took of her shoes and changed into slippers that she brought. Victoria looking back at Kris and glared at him; if looks can kill, she definitely could successfully kill Kris at the moment. He sighed as he saw Nana’s back, wondering if she would once looked at him. But she never did. It seemed like their fight last night was really doomed them. He realized that was the first time he threw his anger towards her and the small argument becoming a blown fight. After that, they stopped talking.

And here they were, separated with a tiny space, yet ignoring each other. She looked at him through her shoulder, seemed like he ignored her as he busily checking on his phone right after the photo shoot done, not even bother to come to Nana. She wondered how previously she could handle the distance pretty well. Somehow, she preferred to be away from him. Maybe after all, they were just making a wrong decision to get married.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was all started 6 months ago, right after Victoria’s marriage. Kris officially asked Nana to be his wife, he proposed to her parents again along with his parents. The two families met and the wedding preparation started as the wedding would be held merely in 7 months. Nana and Kris couldn’t hide their excitement over the wedding, yet they busied themselves with their own work along with the detail of the wedding.

Even from the start, the wedding was already predicted to be big. Nana and Kris were both the only children in the family, so wedding clearly would be held in two places: Seoul and LA. Kris’ mom already promised Nana to help her prepare the wedding in LA, as Nana would be living in Seoul momentarily until the wedding day. So the plan was to hold the first wedding in Seoul and 2 weeks after that, another wedding party in LA.  Wedding party in Seoul involved wedding organizer and of course, Nana’s family, so there’ll be a lot of family meeting from her side.

Nana and Kris excitedly prepared everything for their wedding. She decided to design her own wedding dress, leaving Kris’ to his own favorite designer. She also was being busy choosing the right caterer and location for the wedding. There were a lot of things and details to be checked: gift, invitation card, and of course, list of the guests. She couldn’t predict how many people she should invite as she needs to consider her parents’ guest list and also Kris’. It was too much that sometimes in the middle of her sleep, she mentioned the details of the things that she wanted.

And if she couldn’t handle it anymore, she’ll just call Kris. Although Kris was not in Seoul together with her, but most of the time he did everything to support her; including listening to her rant about the wedding organizer, just like he did currently.

“Darling, calm” he managed to say after hearing her list of complaints about the organizer.

“I can’t, Kris. The wedding is less than a month now… I don’t think I’m going to use them, the staffs were not responsive plus they couldn’t arrange it according to my will… This is really frustrating!” she said, half yelled. Kris chuckled, smiling towards the phone. It’s still dawn in LA, and no matter how sleepy he was, he knew exactly Nana had just came home after the visit from the hotel, which means she also tired preparing for the wedding.

“Ok, so have you contacted any other organizer? My friend can check for the hotel location along with the organizer, I guess…” he suggested as he started to look at his iPad, contacting Zhou Mi, his senior who currently involved in hotel business in China and Korea.

“Well, I’ve texted Yoojin unnie. She’ll help me to check the hotel for the wedding plus she also will help to arrange our hotel for the pre-wedding photo shoot in Macau… Anyway, have you booked your day off? It’s for next week, Kris…”

She clearly heard a sigh from Kris, which only means one thing.

“Kris, you haven’t taken the day off for our pre-wedding photo shoot in Macau?” she asked him in a stern voice.

“I’ll ask Duarte this morning…”

She took a deep breath and sighed. “You didn’t think that the photo shoot is important, did you?”

“It’s not like that… Plus, it’s on the weekend, right? I’ll make sure Duarte allows me to fly on Friday and back again on Sunday, just like you wish…” he replied.

“It’s not my only wish, Kris. So are you saying that you’re not wishing to take the pre-wedding photo shoot?”

It’s Kris turn to sigh. “Not now, Nana. Could you please stop thinking like that?”

Silence. Kris stopped talking and waited for Nana to speak, but all he heard was her sigh. “I’m tired, Kris. Let’s just talk again later. Good night”

And by that she ended the phone call. Both of them still looked at their phone, realizing that they just had another fight before the wedding. Instead of being a lovey dovey couple, most of their time was spent in fight or argue about anything related to the wedding. Well, they’re not always in a fight, but somehow the wedding exhausts them, making both of them more sensitive than ever.

“It’s normal” Vivian said to Kris when Kris told his mom their problem about the wedding preparation.

“Normal?” Kris raised his eyebrows. Nana kept angry to him and yelled to each other about the wedding thingy is normal? That was new to Kris.

“Wedding is the goal that you want to achieve currently, right?” she asked, Kris nodded in agreement as he sipped his latte.

“But remember, it’s not the final destination. Marriage is another step in life that you’re about to take and I hope both of you fully aware that it’s not easy. The fight before the wedding is considered normal, Kris. She might feel worry about the wedding, about how both of you are going to stay together, and she felt alone, because you’re not there with her… She’s mentally tired and she needs your help to pass it” Vivian continued.

“So… should I go to Seoul, accompanying her?” Kris vaguely guessed.

His mother shook her head. “No, I mean, be more considerate. You’re used to the habit of living alone, now you’re going to live with your future wife, things will be change. Everything will be change. And it won’t be easy for both of you…”

“But you and dad seemed fine…” he replied.

Vivian smiled as she softly caressed Kris’ cheeks. “Maybe because we’ve been together for more than 25 years, Honey… But as you’re our life witness, you do know that sometimes I argue with him too, right? We’re not perfect, there’s nothing like perfection in marriage. But there’s a thing called toleration, which work best with communication and trust”

Kris looked at his mom. He’s thankful to have such an understanding mother like her. He thought after the break up and their fight, the proposal followed by wedding would be his happy ending with Nana, but it seemed wrong. They just involved in fight one another. He missed her though, aside from this wedding thingy. It seemed like that they need a free time, just the two of them.

Kris already set his mind; he would just settle everything in Macau.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“These much? I should choose from here?” Kris looked shocked with the amount of clothes prepared by the wardrobe director for the photo shoot. He couldn’t see anything though, there’re too much clothes on the bed and he couldn’t even decide one to wear.

On the other side of the room, Nana busily choosing for the accessories for her and Kris’ photo shoot. She was really happy to see him last night in the airport that all she did the whole day was talking about the progress of their wedding preparation. It’s just in 3 weeks, and after that, they will be officially a husband and wife.

“Darling, could you help me here?”

She heard Kris’ desperate voice from the next room and came by to him. She laughed at his confused face, linking her arm to his.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“These…” he pointed to the piles of clothes on the bed. “I can’t do it. I think this is your area…” he said as he wrapped her shoulder, pulling her closer to him.

She chuckled and looked at the clothes. “Ok, let me choose it for you and for a while, you can check on the invitation update, I guess?”

Kris nodded and moved to the living room. It’s just before he sat on the chair, room services rang the door. Kris went to check and found that the package from Tiffany & co. was being sent to Nana.

“Nana, did you ask for the ring to be sent here?” he asked as he sat on the couch, checking on the box.

“Yes, Kris… Is it coming already?”

Nana said as she saw the package on his hand. She carefully opened it and smiled when she looked at the two rings. He smiled seeing her expression, but then her smile lost, replaced by a frown.

“Why is it…” she found something weird on the ring and tried the small one, her ring. “It didn’t fit my finger… It’s still too big … And… Oh my God!” she gawked at the ring on her hand as she noticed something inside the ring.

“Why does my name written here? It’s supposed to be your name…” she whispered in disappointment.

Kris looked at both ring and found that there’s been a mistake. Their name supposed to be written in other’s ring; Nana’s name on his and his name on hers.

“We can check on the store, asked them to fix it…” he said to calm her down.

“It’ll take weeks to fix it, Kris. And the wedding is in 3 weeks!” she’s half yelled. “I’m so tired about this… Why things didn’t work the way I want it to?” she ranted as she took her phone and called the store. After waiting for seconds, she put away her phone.

“No answered” she mumbled. She sighed and jerked herself to the couch, facing her back on Kris. He knew, at a time like this, all she need was rest. He carefully not to add oil on her fire and kept composed.

He stood up and immediately asked the crew to leave the room for a while. Once he closed the door, he took a chair and placed it in front of her. He softly touched her knees, making her looked at him.

“What?” she weakly said, tears almost fell on her face.

“Nana, listen…” he placed his hands on her knees. “This is not sounded that bad… You should be more relaxed over this wedding thingy… Don’t stress out, okay?”

Nana covered her face with her palms, suddenly crying. Kris looked confused at first, but then he slowly motioned himself next to her, cuddling her. “Ssshhh…” he said softly, her long wavy hair.

“I can’t Kris… The wedding day is getting closer, but why everything seemed to be out of the way? We had too many problems… The hotel arrangement, the wedding organizer, I even almost got the hotel wrong for this wedding photo shoot. And now the ring is…” Nana stopped talking. She took a breath as tears started to run on her cheeks.

“I know and I’m sorry if I couldn’t help you… But stop thinking that everything is ruined, Nana… It’s not, it’ll be fine” he tried to soothe her.

Ever since he got the explanation from his mom, Kris made sure that he backed her up well. He didn’t want Nana feel like she’s doing everything alone for the wedding, even though she did, actually.

“You don’t know how it felt when you’ve done arranging everything but turned out, it’s a total fail. I could go crazy just preparing these stuffs, oh God” she ranted as she tossed away the accessories on her hands.

Kris stood up and crossed his arms. “So now, you think that I’m not cared enough for this wedding? For your information, I did. And for every time you thought on giving up for this wedding, I tried my best to support you. I’m sorry if I was a way from you during the preparation, but to be honest, I don’t know any more what I should do to make you believe that you’re not the only one who worked on this wedding…”

Kris sighed after he done his long speech, leaving the situation hanging coldly. Nana who already cried up looked at him in disbelief. Here come another fight, he thought.

“So what should we do now?” she said in annoyed tune.

“Do whatever you want!” he yelled as he looked away from her.

“Ok, let’s just cancel the wedding. I don’t think I can live with a person like you” Nana left the living room and walked to the bed room, leaving Kris all alone.

“Fine, cancel it! What the hell am I doing here?!” Kris screamed as he took his jacket and opened the door, right when Victoria stood in front of it.

“Where are you going? Are you done choosing the clothes for the pre-wedding photo shoot?” she asked.

“What pre-wedding photo shoot? There’s no wedding. Everything’s cancelled” he replied coldly, walking passed through Victoria.

“WHAT? THE WEDDING IS WHAT? WU YIFAN!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nana sat in front of the mirror and looked at her pale face. She’s about to get ready on the night session of the photo shoot, but she totally has no mood to do it; and also for the previous one in the afternoon. After she fought with Kris in the morning, Victoria tried her best to pursue Nana to continue the photo shoot. And even though both looked really hesitated to take the picture, in the end they still did it. It’s just the picture became really weird due to the fake expression from Kris and Nana. She has no idea why he still wanted to come to the photo shoot while knowing that both were in a very bad emotional condition.

They didn’t talk during the photo shoot, making the photographer worried along with Victoria. Because no matter how hard they tried to cover it, it’s still obviously seen that these two were not in a good condition.

“Nana, have you done your make up?” Victoria asked as she walked in to her room. She gave an understanding look and sat at the back of Nana’s chair. She slowly took the comb and started to fix Nana’s wavy hair.

“Vic, sorry… I’m just not in the mood” Nana said softly. Victoria smiled to her as she continued to touch up her hair and then moved to her face. Vic tilted Nana’s chin and corrected the eyeliner and lipstick.

“I’ve been in there, Nana… The days I spent to prepare my wedding, that’s obviously the craziest days ever in my life. I’ve never felt so worn out like that, but I’m satisfied because I got the wedding that I want, even though I have to struggle to achieve it… Even fight a lot with my husband…”

“But he didn’t say he wanted to cancel the wedding, right?” Nana helplessly replied.

Vic her cheeks slowly with both of her hands. “You’re both at the peak of your distress in preparing the wedding. You and Kris almost had no time for both of you, and it’s all because your attention was spent on the wedding. I’m telling you, wedding preparation surely a way to test your relationship, Nana… If Kris wanted to cancel the wedding, he’d done it from the very first time by not proposing you…”

Nana looked at Victoria, almost crying. “But now, everything’s over. You clearly saw it earlier at the first photo shoot… He didn’t even bother to talk to me… I mean…” she started to sob. “I love him so much, Vic. I’m afraid I’d lose him, but this suffocated me… Those small things that I thought won’t be an obstacle between me and him… Turned prepared a wedding didn’t felt as easy as I saw it…”

“Made up with him” Victoria said, patted Nana’s shoulder.

“I don’t know, maybe now he’s considering to leave me… Who wants to married a person like me who keeps nagging on her boyfriend?”

“Find him first, Nana…  And talk to him. I don’t think you want to let him go?”

Nana looked weakly to the mirror. She had no idea where to find him first, or what should she said if she met him. But as she wandered, she found herself walking in the middle of the fountain in Senado Square. She stood there, watching the water in the fountain. She smiled weakly; this was the first place they visited back in the training in Macau. It seemed like she’s having a flashback, when they happily chatted while enjoying the street food there. Everything was easy back then, not complicated like now. She wondered what he did now, while she’s walking around all alone…

“What are you doing here?” a deep voice was heard from her right side, making Nana looked to the source of the sound. It was Kris, standing next to her. His eyes were different from this morning when they fight; there’s no anger inside it, it’s just Kris being him.

“I was… walking around…” she answered in a lower tone, more like a shy person.

“Wear this…” he said as he removed his black leather jacket and replaced it on her shoulder. Nana forgot that in this windy night, all she wore was just a short sleeve emerald sequin dress that stopped at her thigh paired with black heels. She hold on the jacket, covered her arm to get more warmth.

Without talking, they walked together, leaving the fountain. Kris only left with his grey t-shirt and jeans, looking tired than ever.

“Have you had your dinner?” he asked her. She shook her head. “Want some?”

“Later… Have you gotten yours?” she asked him in return.

“Later…” he answered.

They were walking again, now with slower steps. It seemed like both were about to say something, but hesitated and decided to wait for the right moment…

“Kris”

“Nana”

Both looked at each other. They’re just calling each other name at the same time.

“Yes?” she replied.

Kris looked at her in the eyes. He swore he hated himself so much this morning for making her cry with his words. “I’m sorry…” he managed to say in a hoarse voice.

“Well, Kris…”

Kris stopped Nana from talking. “Please listen to me. I’m sorry… I mean, I’m really sorry. For everything. For the wedding preparation, the gift, the fight that we had this morning. I’m sorry if I misbehave…”

“I’m sorry, Kris. I should have never been that sensitive also… I was being too much over the wedding… I couldn’t thank you much for stay with me the past 6 months, when we prepared for our wedding. I was blinded by my own ego to make things go went smoothly that I started to forget the most important things. You…” she said as she slowly touched his fingers, looking down on it.

Kris didn’t say anything at first. All he did was just touching her fingers back, smiling at her. Nana looked at him with such an apologetic expression, making him couldn’t resist to pull her to his embrace, wrapping her shoulder with his long arm. She placed her right hand on his waist, staying comfortable there while intertwined her left hand with his left hand that covered her shoulder.

“You know, when I was walking around here earlier, I had this thought about you…” he said as he placed his left cheek on the top of her head.

“What thought?” Nana replied as she closed her eyes and rested her head on his shoulder.

“I’m scared when you say that you wanted to cancel the wedding. But I have my anger back then, so without thinking about it anymore, I just threw my tantrum over you and agreed to do whatever you want. I’m really scared… Because I don’t think I could fix it if we fight like this again…”

“And I was under my emotion when I said I wanted to cancel the wedding… I’m so stupid… How could I exchange you with my emotion” she added.

Kris stopped walking and moved from her side, facing her. Nana looked at him in confused.

“I thought I want to marry you because I think I can live with you well…” he said, looking at her. “But, the truth is, I wanted to marry you because I couldn’t live without you, Im Jinah. Never once in my life after God made us seeing each other, I wanted to stop seeing you. So I hope we can be together forever, never leaving each other side…”

He said as he caressed her cheeks and tilted his head, placing her lips on hers. He kissed it smoothly and slowly, just like their first kiss. Nana placed her hands on his shoulder, kissing him back. She felt his smiled on her lips, deepened the kiss before pulled away from him and looked at him with a bright smile.

“I love you, Kris Wu” she whispered.

“I love you more, Im Jinah” he replied as he placed another kiss on her lips, wrapping her waist with both of his hands. Nana had no other option but to kiss him back and giggled when he played with her bottom lips.

Across the Senado Square, two people were just watching the couple kissing publicly and smiled.

“See, this is good for the photo shoot material, right?” Victoria said as she happily grinned, looking at her cousin along with his wife to be.

“You’re just smart as usual, Vic” Zhou Mi said as he took the picture of Kris and Nana who walked back to the hotel, unaware of the two people who kept an eye at both of them.

“Pre-wedding photo shoot done!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Congratulations for your wedding, daughter-in-law” Charles Wu said as he guided Nana on the dance floor.

“Thank you, Father” she replied happily, dancing along with Kris’ father. Everyone was enjoyed the wedding reception, happily chatting and congratulating the bride and groom.

While Nana was dancing with his father-in-law, Kris was kidnapped by her mother who wanted to show him around to her friends. The wedding ceremony went smooth, followed by the reception at night; there’s almost no mistake during the wedding, and Nana’s just happy to know that.

“I hope you and Kris can be a good spouse for each other. Marriage is not about today’s party, there’ll be a long road to pass after this. But I believe both of you are mature enough to do it. I give you my bless…” Charles softly said as he kissed her on the cheek.

Nana hugged him tightly, smiling happily. After dancing with Charles, Nana had danced with her father. At this time, his father looked really happy but also sad towards her. She’s the only daughter he has and the idea of leaving her to the man she loves was just broke his heart a little.

“Dad, don’t be like this…” Nana said as she caressed his father’s cheeks during the dance.

“I’m happy, Honey. So happy that you found the love of your life and that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with him. I’m just… Time passed so fast for me… I don’t think I’ve spent enough time with you. You suddenly are being married… I’m more than happy for my daughter… Be a good wife. I believe you can do it and I believe Kris also to take care of you after this wedding… Be happy both of you”

Nana kissed her father’s cheek softly and hugged him also. She felt like crying right now, but her father shook his head.

“No, don’t cry. This is your wedding day, you should be happy upon it…” he said as placed a kiss on his daughter’s forehead.

After the dancing session with her father and in law, Nana called it quit and started to mingle again with the guests. She joined Kris to thank all of the guests that came to their wedding reception. Most of their friends were coming: Jaejoong, Yoona, Lizzy, Gahee, and others. Lay, Tao, and Chen couldn’t come to Seoul for this wedding, but they’ve promised her that they’ll come for the reception in LA.

When the reception was done, the family members including Kris and Nana went to the hotel rooms that already booked along with the reception hall. Everyone stayed one level below the couple, leaving them all alone in the alley. Kris helped Nana to walk on her wedding dress. For the reception night, she chose the simple white long dress with a deep V cut on the back of the dress, revealing her beautiful . Both looked really exhausted as they walked slowly after walking out from the elevator that brought them to their floor.

“I never knew that preparing and holding a wedding could be this tiring…” Kris said as he wrapped his hand around Nana’s shoulder.

“Ok, just once… just this once, I don’t want to get involved in this kind of thing again…” Nana said in defeat.

“You looked like princess…” Kris said as she saw her tiara stayed on her head. He wanted to tell it earlier on the reception, but both were too busy greeting the guests.

“Are you referring that you’re the prince, then?” she , slapped his arm lightly.

“So, how does it feel to have Wu as your family name now?”

She chuckled. “Please. I’ve just got that name 12 hours ago. I have no idea yet about how it feels to be called like that” she let out her tongue. “But I’m satisfied with this…” she showed him her fingers with their wedding ring on it. Yeah, the ring that made them fighting previously.

“We do really get married, huh?” he muttered. She linked her arm on his, as they’re heading to the room.

“Frankly, when we had a fight last time, I’m scared that I couldn’t fix it again” he said in a low tune. Kris kissed her forehead softly.

“If we never see each other again after the broke up, I don’t know what would happen to us… We are not friend, but we‘re not enemy also… We might end up as stranger…” Nana added.

“Yeah, you and your life while me with mine. Plus we’re living in a different country…That’s possible. But thank God, it didn’t happen like that…” he said as he smiled towards her.

“And thank God, I ended up with you” she replied with a chuckle, opening the room door.

Kris looked at her, cupped her face with his right hand while putting his left hand on her waist while pushing her to the door, leaving it half opened. She closed her eyes as she knew that he’s about to kiss her, making Kris followed her to close his eyes. He’s just about to land his lips on her when suddenly…

“Ahjusshi, what are you doing?”

Both Kris and Nana opened their eyes and looked at the source of the sound. It’s a little boy, around 6 years old, looking at them with a gawked. He’s holding an Optimus Prime robot on his hand, looking cute with his black suit. Kris held his laughter as he drowned his face on Nana’s shoulder. She softly slapped his shoulder and walked to the little kid.

“Yoogeun, what are you doing here?” Nana said as she touched his head.

“I’m looking for my Mom, Gumo…” he replied, in a verge of crying.

“Do you want to go with Gumo to look for mommy?”

He nodded and grabbed Nana’s hand immediately. Nana looked at Kris and he nodded, agreed to wait at the hotel room. He walked in first, taking of his suit for the reception. Nana soon came after she sent Yoogeun, her nephew, to his mom.

“Oh it feels really goooodddd” Nana groaned as she came to the room.

It felt like heaven when Nana finally could take off her heels. She jerked herself on the couch, ignoring Kris who’s taking a drink in the pantry. She closed her eyes, enjoying the softness of the couch. Nana almost sleeping on the couch right when she felt a pair of arms lifted her up. She looked at Kris who brought her to bed bridal style.

He walked as he smiled sheepishly, earning a slapped on his arm from Nana. He placed her on the bed and without saying anything kissed her lips softly. She smiled as she flung her arms around his neck, pulling him closer. Kris pulled away from her, smiling.

“Can we continue whatever left before Yoogeun coming?”

Both could forget the idea of sleeping now…
