Chapter 13
Don't Look BackWith the extra help, the house started looking better in no time. The floors in the kitchen, foyer, living room, and hallway had been cleared away, and were now holding large trash bags that were filled with all the junk. There was still a long way to go, but there was no doubt that the place looked better than it had in years. But the rest of the cleaning was going to have to wait, because it was too late and both Mir and Joon were exhausted. After calling Hyojin, they were doing final touches before reconvening tomorrow morning.
“Hey, Joon? I’m going to take these garbage bags to the curb!” Mir called out from the foyer.
“Alright,” Joon yelled back, washing his hands in the kitchen sink. He turned the faucet off and looking around for the paper towels, but found that they’d used the entire roll. Holding his hands out in front of him, Joon moved over to the basement door and stepped downstairs, thinking that would be where Mir stored those sorts of things; after all, most families do. It was dark down there and he couldn’t see much, but the light coming from upstairs let down enough for him to see a string from the ceiling for the light. Pulling it, a dull lightbulb flickered on and allowed eye sight to be regained, but what Joon saw was nothing as he’d expected; Mir’s bedroom.
It only just sunk in how bad Mir really had it, and Joon felt a mixture of emotions swirl around inside of him; he was disgusted, angry, and hurt. Glancing around the lightened area, Joon made a face of revulsion as he took in the mildew covered mattress that was surrounded by cobwebs, dirt, and bugs; dead and alive.
