Chapter 29

Guardian

Excuse me for mistakes or confusion. Please comment or subscribe because I'll give you more chappies. :P So in the U.S., it's 7/18, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE TAEMIN (again)!!! I love you, best wishes, and stay healthy and happy with SHINee! (Hope I didn't forget anything and don't bash me for slightly bad language!) >.<

(Third Person POV)

It was utter destruction and chaos at the battle scene.

When Chanyeol and Baekhyun first spotted a fast moving figure, they immediately labeled the figure to be a demon and chased after it. They ran for miles on pursuit until they felt another demon tagging on their left, then another on their right. The pair had only stumbled into a stop at an outskirts of a bad part of the city. Then they were attacked by a surge of ash and had time to jump back before it exploded.

They had been tricked and ambushed.

Chanyeol fought back against Daehyun, Jongup, Himchan, and Youngjae as best as he could while Baekhyun took a spare few minutes to call D.O., send a warning, call for back-up, and return his attention back the fight. Chanyeol was badly losing and Baekhyun joined his soulmate in the unfair battle. The pair had to keep running in different directions as a poisonous cloud tailed them endlessly. Baekhyun suddenly was separated from Chanyeol when something whacked him and sent him sprawling into another street. Youngjae appeared and Baekhyun shot beams of light at the Cloaker.

The two guardians breathed a sigh of relief when they saw a familiar flurry of purple-black tendrils down the debris filled street.

"Baekhyun!" called out Suho and him and Kai rushed over to help their fallen comrade on his feet. Youngjae frowned at the aid and shifted into his surroundings.

"Finally, you're here," panted Baekhyun, his face and clothes streaked with dust and grim. The three of them were back-to-back in a triangle, trying to locate Youngjae who lurked nearby, stalking them.

"We meet again," sneered Himchan as he laid eyes on Sehun and Minho who approached him cautiously. For once they faced off on a leveled ground instead of on a roof. They would be able to afflict more damage without making too much of a mess. Minho tried to trap Himchan by forcing the demon to his kness, but Himchan expected the trick and surged forward a blast of smog at him. Minho and Sehun jumped back while Sehun sent a gale of wind at the poisoned cloud to blow it back forcibly. Himchan leered at them and gathered up the smog.

Jonghyun, Taemin, Chanyeol, and D.O. were converging on Daehyun and Jongup. Actually, Chanyeol was taking a small breather aside with Key as the latter directed barriers at his friends to protect them. Key also had set up a large barrier around in a large perimeter looming over the battle area. It was to prevent humans from directly seeing or stumbling into the scene. The aged street was bashed in, had cracks, and littered with debris from damaged buildings.

D.O. and Jonghyun teamed up to distract Daehyun from allowing his ash to be blown up by Jongup. The manic was growing irritated by Taemin who would suddenly dash forward in a blinding light and hit him repeatedly, pushing him back. Jongup threw his supply of bomb bags at Taemin and tried to injure him, but the smaller set of explosions were no affect on Taemin with energy like armor on him. Daehyun had trouble gathering and controlling his mixture of ash and dust when Jonghyun would disrupt the collection with booming soundwaves, and then D.O. would throw chunks of pointed rock at him so he would have to retreat back and forth to avoid being impaled.

"They sure are serious," huffed Chanyeol tiredly on the ground by Key. He was slightly burned and his legs were aching.

Key's face hardened. "But we're driving them back," he concluded. "We just need to render them weak to finally kill them."

"I know," sighed Chanyeol and stood up unsteadily on his feet.

"Ah! Easy there!" Key warned him, glancing at him sideways away from the fights.

Chanyeol brushed off his hands. "I gotta go help Taem bring down Jongup. You should probably help Suho hyung with finding Youngjae."

"Araso," agreed Key and released the barrier domed over them. Chanyeol ran over to where Taemin and Jongup were blasting at each other with noisy explosions and illuminating energy. He released a surge of fire and Jongup's bomb bags met halfway. BOOM! PWOOSH!

Youngjae kept sneaking in and out of view, to hit or bait the guardians. Suho and Baekhyun agreed to be lured into the bait, staying out in the open, and when Youngjae's appearance shimmered into existence, Kai would suddenly also appear, teleporting right behind Youngjae, and try to knab at the demon with a strong kick or punch. Youngjae would also be blasted with light rays or pressurized water from the front and tried hard to disappear again. He was wounded fairly quickly, but could hide as long as he wanted without no one finding him.

Himchan was as aggravating as ever. His smogs and poison making Minho and Sehun wary to stay a safe distance away and sometimes hold their breath. Minho tried influencing the smog to be heavy and lower it to the ground but Himchan was more of an influence and urged it to rise again. Sehun continously blew strong whirlwinds to keep the air unpolluted as possible, maintaining where the poisonous gas crept. Himchan didn't like it at all.

"You little ticks," he snarled at them.

Minho pointed at the buildings behind Himchan and then it crumbled and collapsed, the large hunks of debris falling onto Himchan, trapping him. Minho tried hard to make the debris heavy and hold the demon down, but Himchan corroded the rubble and sprang free. He lunged at Sehun who widened his eyes and buffeted winds from the leeking poison aimed at his face.

"Hold your breath!" shouted Minho as the gases mixed in with the swirling wind currents. Sehun held his breath but Himchan landed a punch on him and he flew back.

"Take that, you scum," Himchan hissed and grinned maliciously. But was taken back when his body suddenly felt light and he was roughly thrown into a building like he was a doll. The building caved in on the demon.

"Sehun!" Minho ran to the maknae's fallen side and helped him sit up.

Sehun was breathing hard, looking pallid. A bruise was forming on his cheek. "Ugh." He rotated his jaw and grimaced. "Ah, that hurt."

"Maybe you should sit out for a minute," suggested Minho, worried how the younger boy looked tired and sickly. "Did you breath in the fumes?"

Sehun coughed. "A tiny bit," he admitted.

Minho looked around, a crease knitted between his forehead. Suho, Kai, Baekhyun, and Key were searching blindly for Youngjae, spread out in a loose, wide circle. Taemin and Chanyeol were facing off with a crazy Jongup, causing massive flares and explosions, inflicting the most damage. Daehyun was leveled off with Jonghyun and D.O. The latters not inching any closer to each other as they both maintained their defensives and offensives.

He thought nothing could get worse. He didn't know what was happening at home. No one did.

...

(Alaina's POV)

The butterfly! I gasped, elated by the insect's mere sight. I felt bubbly and lightheaded. My eyes were bright but a haze shimmered in them.

I heard a chime and the butterfly circled the air, signaling me to follow, and it flew off merrily. We were in a clearing, small trees around us, and the sun and clouds above us.

My feet moved and I chased after the bug eagerly like a little amused kid. My feet crunching the lush grass under me as I ran.

In the physical world, I sat up in bed, got to my feet with precise, robotic movements, my face dazed and eyes lidded over sleepily, and slowly walked out of the room.

Just like I told you, follow the butterfly. It will lead you out of your prison, persuaded a cool voice.

Right, I agreed with a free laugh. I wanted to get out the woods. The butterfly was my trusty guide.

I descended the stairs slowly and quietly. Then I glided down the main hallway, towards the back of the house.

Ah! I broke out from the woods and into a meadow dotted with little wild flowers. A fresh breeze blew my hair away from my dreamy face. I loved it.

I stepped out onto the patio and stroded forward towards the grass. I hardly registered the prickling feeling of grass under my bare feet as I continued walking. Sunlight warmed my skin and hair.

There was one tree in the meadow, a lone figure standing under its shade. I was curious who it was. I couldn't see the person's face. I treaded forward like an unsure animal. The butterfly flew towards the shadowed figure though.

I'm supposed to follow the butterfly, I thought, thinking about the command. I obeyed and walked to the tree.

In the real world, I was edging closer and closer to the outskirts of the barrier. One person stood on the other side of it, watching me, waiting for me.

I was at the edge of the shade provided by the large, looming tree. Up close, I could identify the person now.

Zelo! I gasped. But then I was puzzled. Zelo?

Zelo nodded, the pretty butterfly perched on his shoulder. It's me, Alaina. I promised you the butterfly would free you, didn't I?

I nodded, but still wary. Ne, but...what are you doing here in my dream? Are you really talking to me?

Of course, he said. I'm your friend. I'm here to take you somewhere. Will you come with me? He held out his hand.

I hesitated, almost breaking from the hypnotic spell. I had promised Taemin and Kai and Onew I wouldn't leave.

It's only a dream, assured Zelo, his eyes careful. You can't really go anywhere in a dream. It's not real. But I can show you somewhere where you'll be free. Come with me.

Yeah...I thought to myself, easing from the doubts. I wouldn't really be leaving if I was in a dream. My physical body would be at home still. I found myself reaching out to take Zelo's hand.

Zelo had held up the magical pebble and opened a gap in the barrier. He reached out to take my outstretched hand in his. He tugged me out of the safety of the barrier and the guardian's home.

...

(Key's POV)

Key stiffened, tingles b on his skin. He didn't like this feeling. Something was wrong. But he was occupied at the moment. Kai finally apprehended Youngjae in an unrelenting headlock. As planned, Key housed them in a strong, sturdy barrier. Kai teleported out, leaving only Youngjae inside. He couldn't get out.

Youngjae sighed resignedly. "I...miscalculated."

"Good job!" Baekhyun and Kai high-fived.

"Keep up the barrier, Key!" pressed Suho, keeping a wary eye out on the captured demon. "We don't want him to escape!"

Key nodded, momentarily forgetting about his disturbance.

...

(Onew's POV)

"Hold it right there!" he ordered, running out onto the backyard. He had saw Alaina sleepwalking outside from his office window and rushed downstairs, seeing an unwanted figure on the other side of the barrier. His heart raced to save her in time.

His power made Zelo and Alaina stay in place. Zelo had an arm around the hypnotic Alaina, her head resting on his chest.

"Give her back," he demanded, holding out a hand. Zelo resisted the urge to listen, his arms tightening around Alaina.

"Don't Zelo," cautioned a voice. Both of them looked over to see someone stroding over towards them from where the fenced wall was. He was tall, dominating, and had lightly purple-dyed hair. He looked strong and deft, tall, with pale skin, similar tattoos as Zelo, and dark, lightless eyes.

"Leader," greeted Zelo levelly.

Onew narrowed his eyes at the older demon. "You're Yongguk?"

Yongguk nodded then bowed at the waist civilly. "Nice to finally meet you, leader of SHINee. I'm the leader of B.A.P., Bang Yongguk, but I see you're aware of that."

Onew nodded stiffly, clenching his hands into fists. "I'm Lee Jinki. Everyone calls me Onew. Now, give me back, Alaina."

Unaffected by the voice control, Yongguk stepped to Zelo's side, observing the drowsy Alaina. "If we were to give her back, I'm afraid..." Both Zelo and Onew tensed when Yongguk raised his hand over Alaina's shoulder. "I will have to kill her first."

"Hyung," hissed Zelo, eyes sharp.

"Don't you dare!" shouted Onew, stepping forward but rooted in place when Yongguk's hand was only a centimeter from Alaina's shoulder threateningly. Onew was scared what would happened. Even Zelo was disturbed by his leader's intimidating actions.

"Are you curious what my power is, Lee Jinki?" asked Yongguk, his tone stoic and detached. "It's nothing flashy but it's certainly life-threatening. Everyone is afraid to be near me because of it. So, do you want her back dead?"

Alaina had told him everyone feared Yongguk for his power. And Onew heeded the warning now. He stayed where he was.

"Why kill her after all this trouble to capture her?" demanded Onew, seeing the pieces click in place. "You weren't kill her really. Aish, just what do you want with her?" His voice was rising in frustration.

Yongguk raised an intriguing brow. "You've been ignoring it, haven't you? Trying to brush aside the obvious facts and delude yourself that's it's just a coincidence. I know you've considered, we do refer to her as the Chosen One afterall."

Onew shook his head fervently. "Ani, Alaina isn't the Chosen One. She's not the Peacemaker! She's just an innocent girl with a blank past!"

"Don't believe us then, but we believe she is," said Yongguk. "We must leave now. You stand no match against the two of us, Lee Jinki. I suggest you stay where you are." Yongguk turned around, inclining Zelo to follow suit. Zelo scooped up Alaina in his arms and tailed after his leader obediantly. Inert, Alaina's head lolled over his shoulder, her eyes fully closed.

Onew bit his lip in vexation. "What happen if she is the Peacemaker?" he shouted after them.

"Then the King will rise again," said Yongguk simply without turning around. He and Zelo - along with Alaina - slipped into the shadows and vanished.

Onew desperately hurried back inside the house to call his comrades.

...

(Taemin's POV)

Taemin suddenly paused in place during a major fight. A frown formed on his lips as he blinked, images flashing before his eyes. It surprised him because he didn't go looking for a reading.

He saw Key getting a phone call. Then Key's face paling. His umma shouting at everyone in distress, hot tears running down his face. They all freaked out while the demons looked accomplished under their beaten conditions.

"TAEMIN!" shouted Chanyeol.

Too late, the moment Taemin snapped from his daze, a rush of ash swelled before him. Jongup waved his hand and the ash exploded in front of him.

"Gack!" Taemin flew back, landing harshly on the gritty ground, wounded and hurt. D.O. ran to his aid while Jonghyun and Chanyeol teamed up to fiercely retaliate against Jongup and Daehyun.

"Taemin? Taemin?" repeated D.O., seeing if he could respond. Taemin's head swam, and his ears were ringing from the blast. His skin and clothes were scorched and burned in some areas.

"Where's Key umma?" he mumbled, disoriented and sore. "He'll get - he'll get..." His voice was weak.

"Key has to stay put to hold a barrier that has Youngjae," D.O. said hastily from distress. "What's wrong? Did you see something?"

"Taemin hyung!" Kai ran over, having seen his best friend hurt badly. He knelt by his side, helping him sit up.

"Something wrong!" Taemin managed to cry out in a hoarse voice. "This battle-!"

Taemin's face went pale when everyone heard the ring of Key's phone. To enforce sealment, Suho created a water dome over the barrier holding Youngjae captive. Key took the time to answer his phone.

"Onew hyung?" he answered in a low voice.

Then Taemin saw his vision come true. Key's face paled, eyes widening, clenching the phone tightly.

Key's lips quavered just as his voice, "Ani, ani. You have to be lying..." Tears spilled from his eyes in horror. He raised his head to shout at them, "GUYS! IT WAS A DIVERSION! ZELO AND YONGGUK HAVE ALAINA!"

"WHAT?!" everyone cried out. Kai and Taemin felt a large crack in their hearts, almost too fragile that it would break into pieces.

Himchan laughed brazenly despite being beat up and defeated. "HAHAHAHA! You guys are pathetic to fall for it! We knew we would get her! Just like we promised!"

"You bastards!" yelled Chanyeol. He set a wall of fire upon Daehyun and Jongup. Also angry, Sehun increased the intensity of the flames by combining it with a tornado. A tornado of blistering red flames converged on the two.

"Where did you take her?" demanded Jonghyun furiously, glaring at Himchan. "WHERE IS SHE?!"

"You'll never find her," sneered the cocky demon. "When you do, she'll probably be dead by then."

Those words pounded in Taemin's head.

She'll be dead by then.

Dead by then.

Alaina dead.

His Alaina.

Dead.

"Hyung?" cried out Kai in alarm, but Taemin had passed out by then.

In silent oblivion, he saw a sweet angel smiling at him. She held much warmth in her eyes, and softness to her expression. He knew he loved her and recognized her. Then darkness clouded over, he was losing his vision of her. The angel was shrouded from view. He had lost her.

Alaina.

...

(Kai's POV)

Dammit, he cussed in his head angrily. His hyung has passed out from the heartbreaking news. Kai was hanging onto his sanity, the string of it threatening to make him cry if it were to be cut. He gritted his teeth, enraged, his temper wild.

Kai abruptly teleported, leaving D.O. and Taemin behind, and he appeared before the smirking Himchan. He grabbed his shirtfront roughly and slammed the demon into the ground, the ground cracking from his strong force.

"TELL ME WHERE MY SOULMATE IS YOU SMIRKING BASTARD!" Kai yelled vehemently in the monster's face, pinning him down his knees and weight of his body.

Himchan merely looked amused, raising a brow. "Your soulmate? Don't tell me she bonded to you, too. Cute, but too bad."

Kai punched the demon in the face, his face snapping to the side. "Tell me."

Himchan laughed, blood dripping down his busted lips and the scrapes on his face. "Ani, kid. Find her yourself."

Kai was about to punch Himchan again, but was pulled back in time by a jerking tug of gravity when Himchan released a fog of poison in order to suffocate him. Minho pulled him into a headlock, preventing him to charge at Himchan again. Kai's feet were hefted onto the ground, nailing him from teleporting.

"Listen," hissed Minho in his ears. "Forget about it. We're evenly injured on both sides. We need to retreat and start searching for Alaina. It's obvious they won't fess up willingly."

"Or we can torture them into confessing!" snapped back Kai, thrashing from Minho's hold.

"I'm with Kai on this one," growled Jonghyun, glowering at the tired and badly wounded Daehyun and Jongup. The demons were hunched on the ground. "Yah, tell us where your hideout is!"

"Ani," rebuffed Jongup, staggering on his feet.

Furious, Jonghyun released a terrible screech that broke every window in a three-mile radius and even split a crack on the road. Key managed to pull himself together and enveloped everyone in a barrier to block out the deafening sound. The demons dropped to the ground, clutching at their ears in pain, even bleeding.

"I'm so going to kill you," Jonghyun vowed, grabbing Daehyun's shirtfront and holding him up.

Daehyun winced and breathed lowly, "I never asked for this...kill me if you want." He chuckled, some wistfulness shining in his dark eyes. "I sound like Zelo now...that babo..." Daehyun considered the fuming Jonghyun quietly. He seemed to look...sympathetic.

"A half an hour away on Rosary," he finally sighed wearily.

Jonghyun blinked. "What?"

"The hideout is half an hour away on Rosary street," repeated Daehyun softly. "It's an abandoned church. The location looks like an empty lot but Youngjae had cloaked the place to make it seem like nothing is there."

"What are you doing, Daehyun?" gasped Youngjae from inside the barrier while the guardians were widening their eyes in disbelief. Kai felt hope stir inside him.

"You traitor!" shouted Jongup, trying to rise to his feet but failed and fell down to his knees. "Hyungs and sunbaes will kill you!"

"I know, but I already told them so what does it matter," Daehyun said quietly and lowly. He locked gazes with Jonghyun. "You have to hurry and save her. Yongguk probably is informing Block B hyungs and then calling for a portal to be made. They'll be taking her to the Reversed World first."

"Why help us?" Key asked, his voice doubtful. "Why now?"

"I guess Zelo finally got to me," Daehyun said with a fond, worn smile. It was unlike him to express any emotions. "This really isn't worth it, being ordered around and beaten up if I listen or not. Everyone dies anyway, so just finish me off."

Now Jonghyun hesitated, his grip on the demon loosened.

"Maybe we should try...listening to them," suggested Sehun in a small voice. Daehyun had always been the indifferent, mannered demon unlike his comrades. He seemed to be telling the truth.

"It'll be impossible to sneak in when Yongguk will be expecting it," warned Key.

Jonghyun glanced at Daehyun speculatively before a tiny grin formed on his face.

"I got an idea."

Something tells me I'll like this, Kai thought.

They're so clueless, obviously the demons want her, she has a spell to keep her powers away, and she has a 'strange' ES...... What else do they need!!!!! They even have clues like "the demons have found the chosen one......" But for some reason ( sarcastic tone ) all these demons keep coming for her...!!!!! It's so obvious!!!..
