Chapter 4.

I'd Wait An Eternity For You
You woke gasping for air, you couldn’t breathe at all, it felt like your throat had closed on you. Falling over, you ended up gripping your bed sheets from the floor and tried breathing to the best of your ability; You were only to get little spurts of oxygen every now and then. Your father was up early to prepare for work and raced to your room after hearing a loud thump. You were in agonizing pain when your father stepped foot into your room, your knuckles were white from gripping your sheets and your neck was covered in veins. Without a single word your father picked you up and sprinted out the front doors, setting you into the back seat quickly and sped off to the hospital. The moment the two of you arrived he busted through the hospital doors and went straight to your doctor’s room.

“Help! Peiyun, she’s in pain! She’s having trouble breathing!” Your doctor shot up from his seat immediately and pressed the red button on the bed to get a nurse in here. He motioned for your dad to set you on the bed and approached you at once. He felt your neck and his eyes widened, he grabbed a needle and scissors from the table next to him. He cut through your shirt with the scissors and stabbed the needle through your trachea, he starting to pull at the syringe and blood rushed into it before you felt your chest relax. A giant gasp of air invaded your lungs the moment he was finished. Your father was trembling and you were panting as the doctor set his tools down, a thin layer of sweat had formed on his forehead.

Peiyun, you have to stay at the hospital from now on. You need to have professionals taking care of you at all times, your condition has worsened. What happened just now is a result of the positioning of your tumor, not only has it expanded but it cause the puncturing of one of your veins, causing unwanted fluids to flow into your heart and lungs.” You didn’t know what to say, your mind was blank and your body felt numb. It wasn’t a surprise to hear that your condition has gotten worse, it just hurt to finally hear someone else tell you the truth.

Seventeen days, it’s been seventeen days since that event and the worry that your parents felt were evident in the dark circles under their eyes. They were so scared of losing you and tried their best to stay awake, afraid that they wouldn’t be able to help you in time if they fell asleep. With an IV drip in your right wrist, you stared at the ceiling and counted the tiles to past time. You were lying down on your bed with your mother’s head next to your hand, she had finally crashed. You wanted her to stay sleeping for a while so you chose to stay as still and as quiet as possible, she really needs this. You were on the number fifty five when Yixing’s mother came into the room, a laptop in her hands.

“His teaser came out today! I thought I’d show you.” A weak smile formed across your face, I wonder what he looks like right now. Yixing’s mother helped cover for you when you were unable to speak to Yixing any further that day. She explained to him about the terrible connection you had in Canada and that you were sorry. It’s so hard keeping up with all these lies but this is the best thing everybody can do for him. His debut is nearing; he doesn’t need to know about this, ever.

“Here, I brought earphones as well; I had a feeling that your mother would fall asleep.” Yixing’s mother is always so considerate. You placed the earphones in and pressed play on the Youku video. A heavy bass flooded your ears and you couldn’t help but smile at the “fierce” Yixing you were looking at. His dance moves were sharp and confidence radiated from his entire body. He is so passionate about his dancing; you couldn’t help but tear up a little as you watched the video.

“He did an amazing job didn’t he?” You could only nod at her question. “I can thank you for that. If you didn’t convince him to go, he might have stayed here.” You smiled at her then looked down at the laptop again, you pressed replay and watched the video multiple times. That’s my Yixing.

You were eating the congee that your mother made after she had woken up. She was still tired but she looked a lot better than yesterday. You were taking slow sips of your food when your cellphone began to vibrate. You set your bowl down and took a look at your phone, it’s Yixing. Your mother looked at you with worry, she didn’t want you to answer that phone call. You took a drink of warm water and clicked answer anyway.

“Hello?” Your voice sounded extremely hoarse and fragile even to your own ears.

Peiyun? Are you okay? What’s wrong with your voice? Did you get sick?” Your lips began to tremble from how worried Yixing was, imagine if he knew the truth.

“Don’t worry Yixing, I’m fine. It’s winter here in Canada right now and I got sick from taking the bus home last night. It’s no big deal though.” You were amazed at how much you were able to say without your throat giving up on you.

“Ah okay, make sure you eat well and take care of yourself Peiyun.”

“I will Yixing. So how have you been? I saw your teaser just now, you did an amazing job.”

“Ah really?! That’s why I called you by the way. My manager told me it was alright to call back home whenever a teaser video or picture of mine is released. They didn’t want us to call too much since our debut is nearing and we need to spend most of our time practicing and recording but I’ll be sure to phone you whenever a teaser of mine is up.”

“Oh that’s great news Yixing! I’ll be looking forward to your teasers and future phone calls then. I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you Peiyun, this really means a lot to me. How many guys out there can actually say that their girlfriend waited four years for him? I love you so much and I promise to become the best of the best for you. I want to show you everything I’m capable of Peiyun. This is going to take a lot of time and I’ll have hectic schedules but you’ll stay by my side right? I know it’s selfish of me to ask for you to keep waiting but I want you there every step of the way. You’re my source of energy and hope whenever I feel like giving up. You’ve done so much for me already as it is, I want to reach the top and repay you for all the support and love you have given me. Peiyun, you’ll stick with me until the end right?” The tears that you were holding back began to fall as soft sobs left your lips. The back of your throat began to ache but the pain from your throat no longer mattered, it’s the pain in your heart that’s killing you.

“Of course, Yixing... I’ll do my best and whatever I can. I’d wait an eternity for you.” You were trembling and sniffling as you spoke.

Peiyun, don’t cry. I’m sorry for making things so hard for you, just know that I love you and always will. I’ll try to call whenever I can and visit you the moment I get the chance to. Peiyun, I have to go now, please don’t cry anymore. I love you.” Sniffling, you opened your mouth to return his words.

“I love you too Yixing, bye.”

“Bye.” You began to cough the moment his line beeped, signalling that your phone call has ended. You reached for the water on your table and sipped the contents slowly. Your breathing soon returned to normal and calmed down. You looked over at your mother apologetically for going against her wishes.

Peiyun, why don’t you just tell Yixing the truth? It’ll hurt him even more when he finds out all the pain you’re going through just to speak with him.” Your mother placed her hand on yours, the tears in her eyes were practically begging for you to just do as she says. You took your pen and notebook and began to write.

“I’m sorry but I can’t. Mom... You love dad with all of your heart like how I love Yixing. If you were me, would you tell him this news during the most important time of his life? I would rather die than to have him know about this. I can’t let him have such worry and thoughts fill his mind when he needs to focus right now. The least I can do is support him. Mom, I’ve always listened to you but this time, please let me make my own decision. This is all that I wish for, I love him.”
