Twenty-one
My Best Friend
ღ Chapter Twenty-one ღ
I didn’t even find out that Lu Han and Minjung broke up from my own best friend. Instead, I heard it from Minjung over brunch, and boy was I surprised.
“Wait when did this happen?” I asked, eyes wide. Last thing that I heard, they were not even fighting or arguing. Why would they suddenly break up out of the blue?
“Just yesterday,” she shrugged, not looking too phased. “We talked it over, and decided to just be friends. It was pretty mutual, but I’m glad that the relationship happened though because I met you.”
Surprisingly, I was happy that it happened too. “I’m glad we became friends,” I agreed.
Minjung smiled, and her eyes suddenly started to twinkle. “I heard Minseok mention a couple days ago that you and Kris were kinda…back together?” she asked, giving me a toothy grin. “Something about contaminating his ramyun?”
I blushed, not realizing that Minseok had seen us that day. “Oh, my god. Don’t listen to him, please.”
“Ah well you two are so good for each other,” Minjung insisted, leaning forward with her elbows on the table. She lowered her voice, and continued in a conspiratory tone. “I was personally hoping for it to be true.”
I wanted to ask her why. Why did it seem that everyone, including Minjung, my mom, and my grandmother, think that Kris and I were good together? However, I didn’t want Minjung asking me questions that I didn’t have the answers to.
Instead, I decided to change the subject quickly. “So how is Lu Han about the breakup? Does he need grief counseling in the form of a tub of strawberry ice cream?”
“He’s not too upset either,” Minjung shrugged. “I think he likes someone else already.”
“Why?” I asked, surprised. Lu Han would tell me if he had another crush right? I was his best friend after all. Although lately, he hadn’t been telling me much of anything.
“Just a feeling, and I’m always right about these things.”
“And you?” I continued, eyeing my friend closely. “How are doing?”
“Truthfully, I don’t want to date an idol. I know that I’m going to debut one day, and that I will one day be an idol myself…there is already someone in my heart.”
Wait…what?
I gaped in shock at Minjung for a full minute before I finally found my voice. “Really?” I asked, surprised. I had never heard this story before.
“I never told you that I’m from the countryside, right?” Minjung explained, ruefully. “I’ve been training hard to get rid of my dialectic accent, and it’s not something that I like to publicize. But let me tell you a quick story. There is a boy back home; his family owns an apple orchard, and we grew up together. Really he is the sweetest, most naïve boy I know, and I adore him for it.” A smile, almost wistful smile appeared on Minjung’s face. “The hardest thing about training here in Seoul is being away from him, worried that one of the local girls will catch his eye. Crazy, right? I’m going to be famous nationwide one day, and all I want is farmer’s boy.”
Seriously, that was the most adorable thing I had ever heard. But something napped at me still.
“Wait then…why did you-”
“I was hoping that Lu Han oppa would be enough to distract me, but…my heart is still back home,” Minjung answered, correctly guessing my question.
“Minjung that is so sweet,” I said, and I couldn’t help but lean over the table to give her a little hug. “Can I visit your hometown someday and meet him?”
“Sure,” she agreed, laughing. “My
