The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter Seven

Oh my god, I’m blind. She thought as she opened her eyes.  She couldn’t see anything around her and it was all black. She quickly sat up and felt around her. She felt a regular flat surface instead of the plushness from the couch she should be on. She paused for a moment. Am I…in that stupid dark room again?

She slowly stood up and looked around, hoping something would appear in her vision. Thankfully, something did. A familiar white screen appeared in front of her. The figure in the screen began to focus and she found herself immediately recognizing them.

“Ah, it’s that stuck-up guy!” She pointed toward the screen. His eyebrows knitted together with what looked like shock.

“I beg your pardon?” He gritted through his teeth, his eyes blaring. She slapped a hand over .

“Y-You can hear me?” She stuttered out.

“Obviously, I heard you. Which other rude girl do you think I’m talking to?” He replied back with a hiss. She felt her eyes widen as she fully took his appearance in. He was wearing the same white clothes as earlier but, was standing in a white room. “What is your name? Why do you keep appearing?” He asked in an abrupt and rather rude manner.

She found that she still wasn’t really fond of him. He looked like a prick and was acting like one.  She felt her face form a scowl.

“For someone accusing another of being rude, you don’t have much manners yourself.” She snapped back. His expression was priceless.

“You little…” He snarled back, “Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?” She raised an eyebrow.

“No, no I do not. I don’t really want to know either, if you’re going to be so disrespectful.”  She crossed her arms, daring him to argue back. His lips pursed with complete dislike. He turned his gaze away from her in thought. She shrugged her shoulders and decided to sit down on the floor.

“Kris.” She looked up at the boy, confused. “Kris is my name, now tell me yours.” She felt her shoulder slump in disbelief.

“A simple please would be nice. But, since you introduced yourself, my name is Ileana.” She muttered out loudly enough for him to hear. She examined her legs and saw she was in same clothes that she went to bed in.

“Ileana? What kind of name is that?” He snorted. She quickly glared up at him.

“A name my family put their hearts into choosing for me. So, I’m not really fond of you looking down on it.” She hissed. He blinked down at her with slight surprised and cleared his throat.

Sorry…” He mumbled out, but she couldn’t clearly hear him.

“What was that?” She asked, leaning closer to the screen. His stance slumped in a childlike manner.

“I said I was sorry. I don’t apologize often so consider yourself fortunate!” He declared in a quick manner before looking away. She snorted, cracking a small smile. He caught it. “What? Why are you smiling? Are you mocking me?”

She flashed him a lopsided smile, “No, I’m not mocking you. I was just thinking you must live a very fortunate life.”

“And what do you mean by that?” He asked, going into the defensive. She felt herself chuckling again.

“To start, it seems you don’t know any manners. In my experience, people with no manners are those who feel like no one around them is deserving of their respect. Secondly, the fact that you have a hard time apologizing, it leads me to believe that if you’ve done something wrong in the past, you either don’t believe it’s your fault or you direct the blame somewhere else. If you’ve gotten this far with those attributes, it makes me think you’ve been fortunate, too fortunate.” She looked up at him innocently. His expression told her he wasn’t buying.

“Who are you to assume that about me? You don’t know me!” He clenched his fists as he roared down to her.

“You’re right!” She yelled back, standing back up. “I don’t know you. So, what else am I supposed to go on? You’ve been rude to me since we started talking. Heck, you’ve been looking down on me since we first saw each other. So, if you’re not happy with my assumption, give me something else that will make me assume differently.”  She took a step forward and winced. She bent down and grabbed onto her injured foot. She mentally scolded herself for forgetting about it.

“A-are you all right?” She heard him asked. She looked up at him and was surprised by his confused expression. She raised an eyebrow and looked back down to her foot.

“I’m fine. What do you care?” She mumbled as she lightly massaged her foots, hoping it would decrease the pain. She didn’t hear anything in response and looked up. Kris was looking away, lightly biting his bottom lip. It seemed like he didn’t know what to say. “Sorry.” She quickly said, “That was rude of me. I hurt my foot earlier back. Don’t worry about it though, it’s being properly taken care of.”

He nodded as he turned his gaze towards her. He looked around at the screen and pointed to its borders. “Can you explain what this is?” He moved his hand toward the screen and it appeared like the screen was like glass, with his hand being pressed against it. She went closer to it herself and knocked her knuckle against it.

“Nope, can’t say I know what this is.” She tapped on the glass some more, “Then again, I’m definitely not the person to ask.” She laughed to herself. She looked at him and realized how close she was to him. Well, in visual perspective at least. She felt sort of marveled by his height. “Wow you’re tall.” She couldn’t help but mutter out. She grimaced internally when his lips formed into a smug smirk.

“More like you’re short.” He bantered back, smirk still in place.

“I am not! I am of average height for a female my age.” She playfully glared his way. His smirk turned into a small smile, which in return made her smile, “You should do that more often.”  She pointed to his mouth. “Smile I mean.” The smile that graced his face quickly fell, which made her frown.

“There’s nothing to smile about.” He stepped away from her and turned his back to her. She felt her frown deepening.

“Sure there is. There’s the sun in the sky. There’s the wind in the air. There’s your favourite food and your favourite people.” She felt herself smiling as she thought of those things. She met her eyes with Kris and felt herself freezing up. His expression held one of sorrow and hopelessness.

“Those things don’t bring me joy anymore. They’re overshadowed by the destruction around me.” He paused for a moment, “You wouldn’t understand.” He shook his head lightly and turned his attention off to the side. She felt immediate pity for him.

“Can I?” She felt her lips form the words, before her brain fully processed them. He shot her a look of confusion. “Can I understand? Why don’t you tell me? Maybe…maybe I can help you?” She felt her voice lose its intensity as she continued her sentence. She actually felt a little shy.

“And what help can you give me?” He raised an eyebrow, gazing at her curiously.  She felt herself open her lips and close them again, attempting to bring the proper words out.

“I-I…I can listen!” she exclaimed, “I can be someone you can tell your problems too. You can just let lose and be completely honest to me. You know, to relieve some stress.” She started to cheerfully explain. He processed the idea, but he didn’t seem 100% for it.

“But I don’t know you.” He replied.

“That’s the beauty of it! We don’t know each other. So whoever you mention, the situation you’ve been in, I won’t have my personal perspective conflict. I’ll hear your side clear and clear.” She smiled, feeling quite happy with her plan. Kris still didn’t seem all that convinced.

“You’re telling me, to tell my problems to a girl I just met, through a white screen, that appears in any place and any time it sees fit?” Her smile fell.

“Well, if you say it like that, it’s going to sound weird. As far as I see, you don’t gain anything bad from agreeing to it. But…I can’t really force you either.” She crossed her arms and exhaled. He looked her up and down before sighing. “So, are you going to go for it?” She asked. His expression froze and he moved closer to the screen.

“What?” She asked as she moved closer to the screen. She saw that his lips were forming words, but she couldn’t hear anything. He banged his hands against the glass as his image began to fade. Her eyes widened as she tapped on the glass.

“Hey! HEY! Stop that! We’re not done yet” She yelled to the glass, obviously displeased. But the glass vanished and she was completely in the dark again. “Great. Now what am I supposed to do?” She felt a familiar sharp tug.

She felt her eyes opening again and saw that she was on the couch, in the RV once more. She sat up slowly and looked outside the window above her. She saw the sun looked like it just was about to rise. She looked over to the bed that Sehun and Luhan shared across the motorhome and saw that Luhan still appeared to be sleeping. She didn’t see any trace of Sehun though. She turned to observe the sight in the window again and came to the conclusion that the view would be nicer outside. So, she quietly got herself off the cough, folded the blankets and headed outside of the RV.

She walked around the motorhome and was surprised to see Sehun standing there and focusing on a tablet like device. He heard her approaching and looked up. She awkwardly waved and pulled her sweater closer to her as she felt the morning chill. She carefully made her way next to him and looked towards the horizon.

“Morning.” She whispered, keeping her gaze afar.

“Morning.” He replied back, and resumed tapping onto his tablet. She took a sneak peek to the screen of his gadget and saw fancy charts.

“Whatcha doing?” She asked, feeling her curiosity getting the best of her.

“Reviewing the recordings for the energy flow this morning, making sure everything is in order before we go.” He replied. She pursed her lips and nodded.  “And you?” She felt herself surprised that he asked.

“Oh, um. The sunrise.” She intelligently muttered and pointed to the horizon. “I don’t usually get up this early back home to see it so, yeah.” She awkwardly droned on. Since the night before, she didn’t really know how to act around Sehun. He gave off a more secluded aura which made her feel like he didn’t allow many people in. She also felt like she was one of the few to see the more vulnerable side of him and she wasn’t sure if he was comfortable with that.

They found themselves in what may be considered a comfortable silence. She wasn’t really sure. But Sehun tapped away and she stared with thought swirling around her head. She thought back to the dark room scenario she just found herself in. She wasn’t sure if it was a dream or if it was a connection thing like before. She didn’t really know who Kris was, or the purpose of their connection. She figured she’d just go along with whatever this world threw at her. And if this world threw Kris appearing to her in dark rooms while she slept, she would work with it. After all, what else could she do? When she saw the sun peeking out, all her thoughts stopped and her eyes brightened.

“Look, it’s coming.” She subconsciously tugged at Sehun’s elbow. He stopped what he was doing to glance at her and then to the sun. They froze as they watch the sun slowly rise with the combination of different colours. She felt her spirits immediately lift.

She thought if the sun could continue to rise every day, she could keep on going too. And she promised herself that she would keep on going until her job was done.
