The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter Ten

“Do I look all right?” Ileana asked as she tried to catch glimpses of herself in the shop windows as they rushed past. “I mean, will I stick out or anything? Is this okay to go to a club like this?” She received a hard slap on her back from Xiumin.

“Sweetie, you look more than all right.” Xiumin grinned and winked at her. She frowned.

“But do I stick out?”

“With looks like yours, baby, you’ll be the only thing is the room.”  Xiumin reassured her. But she wasn’t looking for that type of reassurance.

“No Xiumin, you don’t understand. I don’t want to stick out.” She moaned, slumping her shoulders. Xiumin raised an eyebrow and looked between Kai and her.

“And why not?” He asked. She bit her lip, unsure of how to explain.

“Because.” Was the sad reply she came up with. Xiumin gave her a hard gaze, almost trying to find an answer in her eyes.

“Does this have to do with that weird screen thing that happened yesterday?” She felt herself fidgeting under his stare.

“Maybe. “ Xiumin changed his sight to Kai, who in reply shrugged his shoulders. Xiumin’s gaze softened and he let out a small chuckle.

“All right. I got you. Everyone has their secrets, myself included.” Xiumin looked around the streets, “Now, let’s see what I can do for you…” He mumbled as his eyes ran over the people that walked by. His eyes zeroed in on a pair of girls and he smirked. “I’ll be right back.” And he ran off in the girls directions. Kai and Ileana froze in their steps. She widened her eyes and looked at Kai for an explanation. He snickered behind his hand.

“Just watch him work his magic.” Kai nudged her. She looked between them in confusion. She started to observe Xiumin when he approached the girls. He let out a cheerful smile, which melted the girls like butter. They chatted for a while, Xiumin throwing in winks and smirks here and there. The girls flushed and giggled at whatever Xiumin was saying. He pointed to one of the girl’s hoodie and played with its drawstrings. Said girl flushed an even deeper red and tore off her hoodie and gently gave it to him. He flashed an one thousand watt smile before bowing his head to them and walking away. He ran up to them with a smirk of success.

“And that’s how it’s done.” Xiumin bowed comically and stood back up. She looked down at the hoodie in his hand and back up at him, completely bewildered.  With innocent eyes, he shrugged and waved his finger around a circle above their heads. She took the hint and turned around. He slipped the hoodie on her and made his way around. He hooked the hoodies zipper and zipped it up slowly. She glared at him when he grazed her s. He just continued to blink at her with his childish eyes.

When he finished zipping up, she looked down and observed the hoodie. It was a greyish brown colour, with silver embellishments and buttons, mimicking a military jacket (sweater here).  Her sight was blocked when Xiumin pulled the hood past her eyes.

“There.” Xiumin giggled. She pulled up the hood and glared.

“I don’t see how you taking a stranger’s hoodie is going to help me go unnoticed. “ She mumbled as she admired the hoodie.

“I can’t prevent you from sticking out. You’re with us afterall.” Xiumin motioned between Kai and himself, “But I can make you faceless. No need to thank me. I know I’m awesome.” Xiumin flashed a boisterous smile before looking between Kai and herself. “What are we waiting for? Let’s go! We don’t want to miss Lay perform now, do we?” And he turned around and swaggered down the sidewalk. She glanced over toward Kai with eyebrows raised.

“How did you even manage to find him?” She asked as she picked up her pace and followed after Xiumin. Kai shook his head.

“I didn’t. He found me.” Kai replied with a cheeky smile.

“And what the heck did he do to those girls? They were like putty in his hands!” She exclaimed, unable to believe that such a cute looking man could affect women in such a way.  Kai just smirked, shrugged his shoulders and smoothly continuing on his way.

They walked a little more before having to cross a rather large bridge, which surprisingly only went over a small river. Xiumin and Kai informed her that they were crossing over into Sector M, which put her nerves on high alert. She pulled her hood up as far as she could without blocking her sight.

It didn’t take them long to get into a street that was booming with life. Bright lights and stalls were on either side of the street they just entered. Numerous different characters were littered throughout the crowd. Shouts, whistles, cries and laughter resonated through her ears. This was what EXO’s night life looked like.

Xiumin ran past a line of people and greeted some as he past. When people noticed him, they cheered and greeted him back. When they saw Kai and Ileana following shortly behind, the shouts grew louder. She was scared now. She looked over at Kai who wore a smug smirk onto his face as he nodded towards the crowded line of people. So, Xiumin and Kai were famous. Great. They walked past the long line and found themselves in front of an open door with a rather large gentleman guarding it.

Xiumin grabbed onto Ileana’s hand and nodded to the guard, who nodded back. The large man stepped aside and bowed his head as Xiumin, Kai and herself walked past. They were in a hallway that had three elevator looking doors. They headed straight for the middle and its doors opened immediately when they stood in front of it. They walked inside and watched the doors close. After a few moments, the doors opened again and they walked out.

The room resembled something like a warehouse with its concrete columns and dusty large windows. The music was blaring, people were dancing around and god, it was hot. She hoped there wasn’t enough light in the big room so her face could still be shadowed by her hood. She felt a sharp tug on her hand and she was dragged out of the elevator. She tried to tug back, immediately regretting ever agreeing to going out. But, it was too late. The doors closed and she now had to live up to her decision.

A person walked up to Xiumin and whispered something into his ear before lightly patting his shoulder and walking away. Xiumin turned around and beamed at them.

“Kai! I was just told Lay was waiting for you to show up in order to perform. Now that he knows you’re here, He should be up any minute! Ho ho, this is going to be good!” Xiumin tugged on her hand again and led her to the other side of the club. She soon found herself right in front of an elevated stage.

She looked over at Xiumin curiously. He just winked and nudged her, nodding his head to the stage. She looked over and saw three men had hopped onto it. Two men were dressed in a similar way, with a black and silver ensemble. The third man was wearing hot pink pants and a gleaming blazer with a matching shirt. He faced forward and her eyes widened. It was yet another boy from the vision. The boy with the long fringe and cold stare as she remembered.

“Is that Lay?” She asked into Xiumin’s ear, who nodded back excitedly.

“He’s the best dancer in Sector M and probably the City if it weren’t for Kai.” Xiumin replied back into her ear. She glanced over at Kai and saw the fierce look in his eyes.  Suddenly the music stopped and the lights turned off. The crowd cheered loudly and Xiumin hollered along with them.

She squeaked and jumped back when a flare of fire blasted itself not too far in front of her. More and more flares blasted until the lights came on with the music. Lay pushed his blazer back smoothly and then broke into a fierce dance with the two extra men as his back up dancers. He matched with every pause and smooth transition in the music, without changing his charismatic cold expression. He looked like he was barely breaking a sweat as more and more fires blasted around him.

“And of course he uses his goddamn fire connection.” Ileana managed to hear Kai hissed through his teeth despite the loud music. She whipped her head around and watched Lay more closely. So, he was connected with fire energy? Like D.O and Suho were to earth and air? Another fire flaring in front of her affectively erased any trace of doubt in her mind.  Lay’s dance ended with him flipping his hair back coolly and placing a thumb into his front pocket. The crowd went wild. Kai and Xiumin clapped along, though Kai was less enthusiastic in comparison to Xiumin. She awkwardly clapped along as well.

“It’s your turn bud!” Xiumin clapped a hand on Kai’s shoulder over Ileana. Kai sighed and went to go up on the stage. Xiumin stopped him and rummaged through his pockets before finding something and pulling it out, “For a fair game!” Xiumin said and slapped whatever he was holding into Kai’s hands. He looked down and cracked a confident smile. He stripped off his coat and tossed it to Ileana who managed to catch it.

Kai jumped on the stage with no hesitation and walked up to Lay. They looked each other up and down. Lay walked past him, making sure to bump their shoulders as he did and went to the side of the stage, behind a chain-linked fence. Kai’s smirk only grew. It looked like he pressed something into the palms of his hands; Ileana thought they might have been whatever Xiumin had given him. He motioned for the lights to deem a little, which the stage crew obliged.

The music played when Kai reached out to the audience. He opened his hand and a light orb formed in his palm. She stared in awe as Kai danced smoothly as he did in the shop, with the added effects of the mysterious light orbs, it was quite a show. She looked over at Xiumin.

“What are those?” She nearly shouted into his ear. Xiumin smirked and leaned toward her.

“A little something I got from someone.” Xiumin leaned back and continued to shout praises at Kai. The music ended with a boom and Ileana quickly yelled at the top of her lungs for Kai. She clapped until her hands throbbed and were sore.

Kai took a seat on a pile of tires and stared at where Lay was situated. They seemed to have a silent communication going on between them. They both nodded. Kai beckoned Lay to come over with his hand rather cockily. Lay gripped the chain linked fence and made his way around it. Music starting to play again, Ileana looked around confused. Lay and Kai swayed themselves toward each other and bobbed their heads to the beat. Suddenly, Kai took a swipe at Lay, who ducked. Then they stopped and starting to dance in unison. Ileana looked between the two in shock and then to Xiumin.

“Did they rehearse this?” She asked pointing to the two dancing aggressively. Xiumin shook his head.

“No honey, it’s called matching. You have to predict and match your partner’s moves. Lay and Kai always go at it like this, trying to see who can mess up first. It’s fun for them and the crowd.” Xiumin explained before directing his attention toward the stage. Ileana stared dumbfounded as she watch Kai and Lay “matching”. They were incredible. They matched each other so easily. Though you could really see the different dancing technique they used. Kai was rawer around the edges in terms of his dancing, while Lay was more clean and crisp.

The song finished and she couldn’t believe the talent the radiated off these two individuals. Kai and Lay straightened up and pumped their fists together, which Ileana guessed was a mutual sign of respect. Kai walked over to where Ileana and Xiumin were and jumped down off the stage while Lay disappeared somewhere in the crowd.

“Oh my god Kai, you were so good!” She beamed at him and clapped her hands together. Kai smiled back and nodded. The lights in the club went dark again and the regular music began to play. The crowd around them began to morph and she looked over her shoulder and found Xiumin being pushed away from her.  She snapped her attention back to Kai and saw that he too was being taken away in the dancing mob, though he did look like he was trying to get back to her. She pushed, shoved and all sorts of forceful things until she was able to get out of the crowd. She looked around and spotted a bar. She figured it’d be a safe place to see Kai or even Xiumin.

She made her way over and sat down on a stool. She politely refused the bartender when he offered to get her a drink. She didn’t have any money, nor did she know what liquor would do to her on EXO.

“Aren’t you mysterious?” A voice cooed into her ear. She slapped a hand over the violated ear and whipped around the face the culprit. It was a good looking man, though anyone could see his intentions were less than friendly. His greasy smile and hair to match made her quickly turn back around and completely ignore him.

“Come on, don’t be like that.” He cooed again. She inched further away from him. She felt a tug on her hood and she quickly caught it before he could move it further than a centimeter. “Let’s see that pretty face you’re hiding, shall we?” He forcefully turned her around. She glared the sharpest daggers at him.

“I’m. Not. Interested.” She gritted through her teeth and tried to free herself from his grip on her shoulders. He was sadly quite strong.

“How about I make you interested?” He leaned in forward and she flinched back. She strangely didn’t feel anything beside the grip on her shoulders disappear. She cracked one eye open and gasped. The man was now on the ground and Xiumin was standing over him with a bloody clenched fist.

“She said she’s not interested pal.” Xiumin spat down on the man. The man looked up and in a fury charged at Xiumin. Xiumin fully took him on and they started fighting. She looked between them, completely unsure of what to do. She saw Kai force his way through the crowd. It looked like he cursed under his breath when he saw Xiumin pin the man to the ground and continuously beat him down.  He rushed over and effortless took Xiumin off the man, who was groaning on the floor. A crowd had formed around them by then. She cursed inwardly when she felts eyes stare at her.

“Come on!” Kai shouted toward her and dragged a still angry Xiumin away to the elevator exit. She quickly went after them. The elevator doors opened quickly and they ran inside.

“Xiumin, you just had to do that.” Kai hissed at Xiumin, who was trying to calm down, “That was a high officer's son. Now their lackeys are going to be out for our skin for the rest of the night.”

“And what do you suppose I do? Let him force himself onto Ileana. I don’t think so.” Xiumin snapped back and walked out of the elevator doors when they opened again.

“You didn’t have to punch him!” Kai exclaimed. They exited the club and she could feel the stares and hear the whispers as they walked by.

“Well, he wouldn’t have gotten the message otherwise.” Xiumin mumbled.

“Okay, enough.” Ileana interrupted, “Who was the guy at the club and why are people after us?”

“He’s a son of one of the high officers in Sector K. So, they have enough power to take out whoever they want, with or without reason.” Kai explained, glaring at Xiumin. “So, he’ll probably have his people search for us all night. You included, and I’m pretty sure you’re not okay with being picked up by them.” Ileana bit her lip and nodded. “Then we need to get home immediately.” Kai and Xiumin picked up their pace and looked around cautiously. She was almost running to match up to them.

They crossed the bridge into Sector K, which made her feel a little comforted. Half way there and no sign of trouble.  She saw the flash of headlights coming from behind her and went to look over her shoulder when Kai stopped her.

“Don’t. Don’t acknowledge them. Just keep walking.” Kai gripped her wrist. She tried her hardest to follow his words. The cars came closer and closer. “Okay. Now we run.” And Kai sprinted off, dragging her along with him. Outrunning a car isn’t exactly easy though. Xiumin ran off in a different direction taking half the cars with him. They ran and ran until they were blocked by four black cars. Xiumin entered the scene and halted seeing them and the cars. Kai and Xiumin had a silent conversation before nodding and high fiving each other.

“Ileana, it’s been a pleasure meeting you and I hope to see you again.” Xiumin cheekily smiled. Men exited the cars and Xiumin’s smile turned into a smirk. “Come at me bro!” He exclaimed and ran toward the men. She launched herself forward impulsively. Kai pulled her back and ran in a different direction. Anytime someone tried to go after them, Xiumin quickly blocked them and took them down.

“What does he think he’s doing?!” She yelled at Kai. “He can’t just take all of them at the same time!”  But Kai kept dragging her along.

“We agreed he would distract them while we got away. Now don’t let his efforts go to waste and run faster.” At his words, she couldn't help but follow his orders and run faster. They didn’t stop running until they found themselves inside the shop. Her lungs were on fire and she was so exhausted.

“I’m going to bed. Good night.” Kai bowed his head to her and walked off smoothly. He looked like he was just fine, in comparison to the panting mess she was. She glared after him, envying the robot’s stamina.

She waited a little before moving, trying to steady her breath and for her temperature to go back to normal. She finally painstakingly moved her feet toward the empty room that led to Sehun’s flat. She prayed he wouldn’t give her a scolding when she would see him.

She entered the room and reached up to grab the handle hanging from the ceiling. She gripped it and then let it go when she felt something slippery coating it. She pulled back her hand and was shocked to see something red had stained it. Her gut plummeted. She quickly latched onto the handle and pulled it down as hard as she could. The stairs collapsed down in front of her and she was shocked to see drops of red littering them.

She ran up the stairs, her heart pumping with anxiety. She kicked off her shoes and pulled the stairs back up. “Sehun!” Her shout echoed into the apartment but was given no answer. She looked around and grabbed a vase that was on a small table next to her. She raised it over her head and slowly progressed her way into the apartment. She looked right and left and didn’t see anything out of place beside the drops of red on the floor. She made her way in the living room and the sight in front of her made her drop the vase, effectively shattering it to pieces.

“Sehun!”

There sat a pale and tired Sehun, clutching his bloodstained side.
