Thirty Nine

The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter Thirty Nine

Ileana was peacefully drifting through her sleepland when a loud dinging shocked her awake. She groaned as she tried to shake off her fatigue and sat up in bed. She bitterly flipped the duvet off of her. The new flat she was now staying in was not only beautiful but the bed was so (and maybe too) comfy.

She managed to drag her feet out of the bedroom and to the door, cursing whoever woke her up along the way. Once she opened the door, Sehun brushed past her while carrying bags filled with food. She stared over her shoulder at Sehun, feeling quite confused before closing the door. Sehun kicked off his shoes, completely ignoring her and entered further into the flat.

“Did I say you could come in?” She asked, her voice a little raspy from sleep.

“I’m feeding you, I didn’t think I needed one. Besides, I’m in a hurry and have to head to work soon.” Sehun replied and then walked out of her vision and presumable was heading for the kitchen. She crossed her arms with a large sigh and followed after him.

“Did you wake on the wrong side of the bed or something?” She mumbled, rubbing her eyes as Sehun took the groceries out of their bags and into her cupboards and fridge. Sehun loudly slammed a cupboard door shut.

“I’m fine.” He bellowed out in monotone…which didn’t really convince her. She took in his tense posture as he began preparing raw ingredients.

“Is it because I’m staying here?” She asked, trying to catch a glimpse of his expression.

"No. I’m fine.” He restated in the same dry manner.

“I told you. This is more central and I didn’t want to bother-“

“You were never a bother.” He cut her off and looked into her eyes for first time since he entered the apartment. “I’m fine. So just let me cook.” Sehun turned back around to face the counter and pulled out a knife and cutting board.

“Need any help?” Ileana asked after hovering over Sehun for a few moments. Sehun huffed a little and tossed her a bag of vegetables.

“You can wash these.” He replied. She eagerly took the bag and moved a little further down the counter to where the sink was. She hummed as she cleaned the vegetables and placed them in a bowl when she was done. She hung her hands over the sink and tried to find a dish cloth to dry her hands but there wasn’t any in sight. Her eyes then set their sights on Sehun who was very absorbed with chopping some veggies.

“Hey Sehun.” She smirked evilly. Sehun faced her and she flicked her wet fingers right in his face, letting drops of water fly about. Sehun flinched back immediately and blinked his eyes at her confused before they narrowed down considerably.

“You didn’t…” His voice said while dropping a few octaves. Her response? Another flick of her hands.  Sehun raised his hands in defense this time. “I see how it’s going to be.” He said as he lowered his arms. He grabbed a slice of something resembling a cucumber. “Take this!” And he threw the slice. She wasn’t quick enough to block the hit and a thin slice of cucumber had stuck itself to her cheek.

“Oh…it’s on.” She said and turned the tap back on. So, a mini food and water fight started between them.  She thought she was the one winning considering how wet Sehun was. She didn’t bask in her triumph long because the very water that got her victory became slippery under her feet and she slipped. Her body fell forward and crashed into Sehun's, who held them for a second before he slipped on the water as well and they both went down.

“Oh my gosh, are you okay?” She sat up from on top of Sehun, checking him for any injuries.

“Fine.” He said quickly, “Could you…get off?” She blinked down at him, slightly puzzled by his flustered expression. Oh right, she was sitting on Sehun’s thighs…very close to- She jumped off quickly, nearly slipping again on the wet floor. She flattened her clothes and offered her hand to Sehun. He took it and she helped him up. She tried to let go of his hand but he gripped hers tightly.

“Ileana.” He whispered, “We need to tal-“ He was interrupted by the doorbell. Ileana looked over her shoulder and then back at Sehun and his hand.

“I should go get that.” She whispered and slipped her hand out of his. She hesitantly turned around and walked away from Sehun and toward the front door, willing her pulse to slow down.

She opened the door and was surprised to see Kris standing in the doorway. “H-Hi.” She stuttered.

He smiled back and offered her a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a box in another. “Hi, I thought I would drop by and give you a housewarming gift. And I also brought some breakfast.”

She took the flowers gently and smiled at them, “Thanks, Kris. They’re beautiful. They’ll definitely give some life to the place.” She lightly touched the petals of the flowers.

“Um,” Kris said after taking in her appearance, “Is everything okay?” She looked down and realized she was covered in bits of vegetables and had wet spots all about on her clothing. She didn’t even want to think about what her hair looked like.

Before she could reply, Kris’ eyes turned cold and menacing as they looked past her. She looked over her shoulder and saw that Sehun was standing a few feet behind her, drying his hair off with a dish cloth. Sehun was staring down Kris with disinterest, which made her tense up. She looked between the two awkwardly.

“Um, I’m not sure if you’ve guys have formally met but Sehun, this is Kris. Kris, this is Sehun…my old roommate. “ Silence. “He came over to make me breakfast…he used to make it for me all the time when I lived with him, so …yeah, I’m sure you can join us, we should have-”

“There’s not enough for three people.” Sehun cut her off, not giving her a glance. She bit her lip as a response.

“Oh…kay. But Kris, you brought your own food, right? So I guess we can all share what we have together. If that’s all right with you guys…” She quickly added in.

“It’s fine.” They both answered, still not looking at her. She forced her lips into a smile and nodded.

“Great. Come on in then.” She opened the door wider and stepped back. Kris stepped into the apartment and kicked off his shoes accordingly. The three of them walked into the messy kitchen. Ileana broke away from the two and took care of the bouquet. Sehun started cooking whatever creation he had in mind while Kris stood there awkwardly with his box of food.

“Go on and take a seat, I’m just going to clean up a little and then I’ll set the table.” Ileana waved over to a small table with four chairs. Kris nodded as he walked over and sat down.

Ileana busied herself, trying hard to ignore how thick the air had become. It wasn’t long before she had everything cleaned up and Sehun finished cooking. She and Sehun placed plates and the food onto the table and Ileana took a seat beside of Kris while Sehun took a seat in front of her.

Ileana opened the box that Kris brought and smiled at the familiar sight of two of the delicious pastries she usually would get at the tea shop. “Ohh, look Sehun. It’s our favourite!” She pointed to the pastries. Sehun looked over it and shot Kris a glare before eating what he had cooked. “Want to share it?” She asked.

“Ah, no it’s-“

“Hush hush, I know how much you like these.” She took one of the pastries and cut in half. She moved one of the halves to Sehun plate. “And don’t think I’ve forgotten about you, Kris.” She took half of her portion of Sehun’s cooking and moved it onto Kris’ plate. She nodded; feeling pleased with herself and carried on with eating.

The rest of the meal was silent. Ileana ignored that Kris hadn’t touched what Sehun cooked and that Sehun hadn’t touched the pastry. She took a large gulp of water, finishing off her glass and sat up abruptly. She clanked her dishes loudly, feeling frustration slowly take over her. She walked over to the sink and rinsed off her dishes and dried them. When she was done, Kris and Sehun sat up, food still on their plates.

“Stop.” She said just as Sehun was about to toss the half of his pastry, “Give it here, yours too Kris.” She grabbed Kris’ plate maybe a little more forcibly than needed. She combined the food on one plate and placed it into the fridge. She figured it could be her lunch. Once that was done, she cleaned their dishes, letting her frustration seep further in as stares bore into her back.

“Listen.” She gritted through her teeth. “This…thing between you two needs to stop.” She switched her reprimanding glare between the two of them, “We’re in the middle of planning a coup d’etat and we need everyone to be somewhat civil with each other.”  She let out a small sigh before turning to the sink and drying the dishes. “I don’t get why you guys are acting this way.” She mumbled.

Putting the dishes back into the cupboard, she leaned against the counter. She was startled by the looks she was getting from Kris and Sehun and felt very small at that moment. “You’re kidding, right? You don’t understand?” Kris asked.

“She never does…” Sehun murmurs. Kris spared him a glance and for once, it seemed they understood each other. Either way, instead of her scolding them, she felt like she was the one being scolded.

Although Ileana was feigning innocence, she had an educated guess with why they were acting that way toward each other. She didn’t want to acknowledge it however. Sehun was right, it was neither the time or place to discuss feelings. But if this problem was going to persist, she knew she had to do something.  But, she needed to sort out her own feelings first before talking to either one of them about it.

“I’ll take my leave now.” Sehun nudged his head to the door. She nodded and followed after him. Sehun put on his shoes and she opened the door for him. He walked outside and faced her.

“Thanks for coming.” She whispered, leaning against the doorframe. Sehun nodded and looked past her. She looked over and saw Kris had followed after them.

She felt a tug on her arm and was pulled out into the hallway, with the door closing after her. Sehun took her into his arms and hugged her tightly.

“It’s weird.” He whispered, “Not seeing you in the morning.”

She closed her eyes tightly as conflicting feelings ran through her. She hugged him back, though she felt it might have been very weak in comparison to his grip. Sehun finally let her go and walked away from her. She stared after him until he entered the elevator a few doors down. Sighing, she turned around and entered her apartment.

Kris was there, waiting for her, with a mixture of hurt and anger on his face.  “Who is he to you?” He asked, firmly.  She searched his eyes, unsure of how to answer the question.

“He’s a good friend.” She replied, feeling it was the most honest answer she could give at the time.

“What are you to him?” Kris asked, his tone seeming angrier now.

“I don’t know, I’m not Sehun.” She shot back, “Stop it Kris. Don’t start this.”

“I’ll start whatever I want.” He hissed back, “This involves me, I think I have the right to know if I’m being played with.”

“Played wi- No! How could you think that?” She was appalled at the accusation.

“Then why does it feel that way?”

She swallowed, feeling as if she was hitting a dead end. “Why won’t you believe me when I’m telling you that’s not how it is?”

“I want to believe you, but other circumstances are making it hard.”

“Why are you asking me then? Why are you here? If you can’t take my word, why don’t you leave?” She croaked. After the words left , she immediately regretted it. But, on the bright side, Kris seemed to be struck by her words.

He clenched his fists by his side and stared down to the floor. “I’m sorry.” He whispered. “I just…was so overcome by-“

“Apology accepted.” She quickly cut him off before she let him explain any further. They stood there in the entrance way, letting silence fill the space between them. Thankfully, it didn’t last long due to Kris’ COMM ringing. He picked it up and spoke to the person on the other line quickly before hanging up.

“I need to go.” He said quietly. She slowly nodded as he walked over and put his shoes on. She opened the door and leaned against it.

Kris turned toward her for a moment and then took a step. He cupped his hands along her jaw. He leaned forward which made her eyes widen in surprise. He brushed his lips against her forehead and whispered, “I’m sorry.” Before stepping away and walking down the hall.

She slowly closed the door after him. She slid her back against the door and fell to the ground. She pushed the palms of her hands into her eye sockets and wished that the emotional turmoil would just disappear and never show itself again.
