The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter Fifteen

She wasn’t the least bit surprised when she saw darkness as her eyes opened. She thought it would be safe to conclude that she would be brought to this dark room whenever she would fall asleep in EXO, and if she was in this dark room that meant…

“Are you going to get up or are you going to stay laying down?”

Yup, her suspicions were correct. She sat up and was met with the sight of Kris sitting in a chair that was placed in the front of the screen.  She nervously her lips.

“Is resting a crime?” she sighed back. Although having little chats with Kris were interesting enough, she didn’t really understand why she was continually brought to him. As far as she knew, he didn’t know the reason for their forced interactions either.

“I much rather talk.” Kris replied leaning back, eyeing her with a smirk.

“I don’t want to talk today.” She whined and laid back down.

“Why? You’ve been so chatty in the past.” Kris leaned in closer, a slight look of confusion in his expression.

“Yeah, well that was before things got stupid.” She muttered back.

“Am I supposed to understand that or are you going to elaborate?” Kris replied sarcastically. She wasn’t exactly in the mood for snarky comments.

She shot up and marched over to the screen. She plopped herself down on the ground in front of it and stared into Kris’ startled eyes. “Things are stupid because the people around me are getting hurt and my questions aren't being answered. Happy now?”

“That doesn't really fully explain everything, but are you in some sort of trouble?”

She tried to conceal her surprise when she saw genuine concern in Kris’ eyes.  She sighed,“Not yet, I’m just messing with risky business right now, so I don’t know what my future has in store for me.”

“Then why don’t you stop if you think you're going to be at risk?” Kris' troubled expression did make her a little happy, at least he wasn't a complete cold hearted person.

“I can't stop. A lot more people will be in danger if I did.”  There was a small pause. She knew what he was going to ask. She was waiting for it.

“What is this business you’re messing with?” And there it was.

“I don’t think I can tell you.” She said while gnawing at her bottom lip.  She wanted to tell him, honestly. But due to his anti-Sector K sentiments from the last time they talked, she decided it would be best if he didn’t know. Besides, it seemed like he would be more than enthusiastic about a war breaking out against Sector K rather than to prevent it.

Either way, Kris was not happy with her answer and a mixture of hurt and anger was starting to show through his expression. “What do you mean you can’t tell me?” He hissed through his teeth.

“I don’t know you well enough.” She explained, “Only a small amount of people I trust a lot know why. So far, I’ve never met you face to face, I don’t know who you associate yourself with or where you stand on certain issues. And I won’t ask you to answer any of those as long as you let this go…please.”  She sent him a pleading look, which cracked his angry expression by a small portion.

“I was only asking because I thought I could help you. Although you might not know me well, I happen to be of some importance around Sector M.” Kris scoffed, looking off to the side stubbornly. She lightly smiled.

“And I thank you for the offer. But this is something I have to do on my own.”  Kris started to look appeased with that reply.

“I understand…Some things can only be done with your own hands.” Kris clenched his fists in his lap. He became lost in his own thoughts. Curiously, she moved closer to the screen and knocked on it, effectively snapping him out of his trance.

“Ileana and Kris, fighting!” She fist pumped into the air with a quirky smile. Kris just raised an eyebrow. She awkwardly lowered her hand and scratched the back of her head. “Um, it looks like you have your own demons to fight. So, I just thought I’d cheer you on…a little.” Her explanation was rewarded with a small smile.

“Thank you.” He said lowly. He ran his eyes over her face for a second before cracking into a bigger smile.

“I like your new hairstyle. It suits you.” He snickered behind his hand. She raised an eyebrow. She didn’t change her hair as far as she knew. She lightly touched her hair, and realized that something had indeed changed. She pulled some of her hair forward and found several messy braids and other hair configurations. Her hands touched the top of her head and felt three small ponytails.  Oh, she was not happy.

“That. Damn. Weasel. Sehun!” She shrieked, hastily pulling out all of the hair creations Sehun had made while she was sleeping.

“Sehun?”  Kris’ voice broke through her mumbling threats. She smoothed out her hair and nodded.

“Yeah, he’s my roommate.” She supplied, still combing her fingers lightly through her hair.

“A male roommate?” Kris’s tone had her raise eyebrows.

“Yes…is that a problem?” Kris stiffened up and cleared his throat.

“No. It’s fine. Have you decided on moving to Sector M yet?”

“It’s only been one day since we made the agreement, Kris.” She slumped her shoulders a little, “Though there’s a rumor going around saying something bad is going to happen to Sector K soon.”

“It’s not just a rumor.” Kris’ sharp tone rang sound and clear, “It will happen. So take my warning and get out of Sector K.”

“And what makes you think it’s not just a rumor?” She eyed him suspiciously.

“I told you already. I’m kind of a big deal in Sector M.” He shot her a playful smirk.

“And you kind of have a big head too.” She snarled back. “But seriously, what makes you think it’s not just a rumor?”

Kris’ lips formed words, but she didn’t hear anything. She jumped closer to the screen, a feeling of annoyance washing over her. “No…NO, you cannot cut off at this part! This is information I need. Gosh darnit screen!” And she was in the dark again.

When she opened her eyes again, all she saw was Sehun's sleeping face. She slowly processed her surroundings.  It seemed like Sehun had fallen asleep playing with her hair with his face was only resting inches away from hers. She tried to moved back and felt something attached to her hand. She looked down and saw that her fingers were interlaced with Sehun’s. Slowly and painstakingly, she removed her hand without waking him up.

When she saw that she had a perfect view of his bare forehead, an idea appeared. Revenge’s a . She snickered in her head. She pulled back her middle finger and aimed for the middle of Sehun’s forehead. She pulled her finger as far back as it could go and TACK!

“Tch!”  Sehun grunted and jumped back, rubbing his newly red forehead.

“That’s what you get for messing with my hair!” She pointed at Sehun and wiggled a little celebratory dance on the sofa. Sehun groggily glared at her and stood up.

“You said I could do what I want as long as I didn’t cut it.” He whined, still rubbing his forehead, “That hurt you know!”

“Next time, there is only touchy and no styling, okay?  Use something else as your creative output.” She stretched herself out on the couch and groaned; She stood up and made herself over to the kitchen. “Feed me please.” She looked up at Sehun with puppy eyes from the kitchen. He made his way over to the kitchen and poked her hard in the head.

“Feed yourself.” He grumbled, but still picked things out of the fridge. He made some sort of an omelet, with all sorts of yummy and unknown ingredients. Of course, it was delicious and she made sure to tell Sehun so.

After breakfast, the day pretty much went as it did the day before. Sehun went off to work in the labs, and she helped Kai off in the shop.

At the end of the day, Sehun stormed in through the door. Kai and Ileana quickly shot their heads up from their nightly card game and gave him a questioning gaze. He was panting as if he ran a mile. Quickly, Ileana got up and ran over to Sehun.

“Are you okay? Gosh, you look like you’ve been running all day.” She helped Sehun take off his coat while he tried to catch his breath.

“Kai,” He panted out, “Water. Please.” In a matter of seconds, Kai had retrieved a bottle of water and Sehun gulped it down.  She led him to a couch in the shop and set him down. He quickly regained a normal breathing pace. Ileana stared at Sehun, asking a dozen questions with them.

“I think found out something will be extremely useful for the mission.” Sehun told her, meeting her eyes dead on. She raised an eyebrow in question.

“So extremely useful that you had to run all the way here?” She asked with disbelief.

“There’s a banquet, being held in Sector M. Everyone who’s anyone in Sector M will be there, including crime leaders. This could be our break Ileana.” Sehun gripped her hands tightly, “We could find out who took Luhan and get him back.”

“I still don’t understand. How will we get in? How will I know who’s who? “ She searched his eyes confused. Sehun expression deflated.

“I haven’t gotten that part figure out yet. I don't think I should go in case any of the men from the ambush are there and they recognize me. It’s just, I still think we need to figure out a way to get in there.”

“Um, are you talking about Sector M's Celebratory 18th Annual Banquet by any chance?”  Both Sehun and Ileana shot their heads around and saw Kai standing there awkwardly with his hands in his pockets.

“Yes…why?” Sehun asked, eyeing Kai. Kai let out an awkward smile.

“Well, I’ve been invited to perform and I’m allowed to go solo or with a dance partner.” Kai explained. Sehun stood up and gripped Kai’s shoulders.

“Are you serious? How did you even manage that?” Sehun lightly exclaimed, searching his eyes.

“Calm down, Lay pulled some strings for me.” Kai said while shrugging him off. “As I was saying, I can probably bring Ileana as my dance partner. But there’s a small problem.”

Sehun and Ileana exchanged looks and turned their attention back to Kai.

“She needs to learn how to dance at least decently. I am hired to entertain and I can’t exactly show up with someone who can’t dance.” Kai explained. She paled in response. She knew the basics of dancing, but she was nowhere near Kai’s robotic skills.

“We’re doomed.” She mumbled, planting her face into her hands.

“No, wait. Kai, can you teach her in two days?” Sehun asked.

“Two days?!” She yelped, removing her hands from her face. She was in no way going to be ready in only two days.

Kai shook his head, “No, I wouldn’t have enough time unless you want to close the shop for two days.” Sehun bit his lip and shook his head.

“I can’t close the shop that long, it’ll draw attention.” Sehun ruffled his hair, clearly aggravated. There was a small pause when Kai broke into a smile.

“Wait, I got an idea.” He pulled a communicator out of his pocket and dialed a few numbers. He turned around and started mumbling into the communicator. After a minute, he hung up and an even bigger smile was planted on his face. “Problem solved. Ileana, I got you one of the best dancing teachers in the entire City.”

“Wait what?” She asked confused, “Who? How?”

“For the next two days, you’ll be at the mercy of the infamous Lay of Sector M.”

“Lay?!” Ileana and Sehun shouted at the same time.

“That fire controlling guy?” Ileana added, “Why would he agree to something like that?”

“Despite what you might think, we’re all right friends and he owes me a few favors anyways. So, prepare yourself. He’s pretty strict.”

“I guess it’s settled.” Sehun sighed, with a firm nod, “Ileana, you’ll learn how to dance from Lay for the next two days. Then you and Kai will go to the banquet to try and grab some inside information.”

Ileana looked between the two boys and realized that she wasn’t really going to have much say in this matter. She told herself to hold down her worries and to just go with it. She was going to learn from Lay, the scary cold eyed fire controller and she was going to go into enemy territory and spy.

“Can you do it, Ileana?” Sehun asked. She nodded.

“Yeah, in the least I will try my hardest.”

“Good, because Lay’s expecting you first thing in the morning tomorrow.” Kai replied, waving his phone around. She frowned.

“Guess I should go to bed then.” She sighed and got up.

“I’ll come and wake you tomorrow.” Kai told her as she walked by him. She smiled and nodded.

“Good night you two.” She said over her shoulder and walked her way over to the flat.

She’ll need her sleep tonight.  So, without hesitation, she leapt onto the couch and quickly fell asleep.
