Thirty One

The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter Thirty One

When the doors closed, the elevator immediately jerked upwards. Startled, Ileana turned to the number panel and saw that the number 1 button had . Before she could think about how and why it was on, the doors on the other side of the elevator opened.  Turning around, she inched toward the exit. She popped her head out and observed what was outside of the elevator.

Suddenly, the doors started to close and she quickly hopped out before her head got chopped off. Realizing her mistake, she tried to stop the elevator doors from closing but it was too late. She was trapped outside the elevator and was now inside an empty and strange looking beige room.

Resting her back against the elevator, she continued looking around the room, hoping for something to happen. What sort of test was this?

She finally stepped away from the doors and walked further into the room. She heard footsteps approach and she immediately whip around toward the sound.

“Kai!” She cried when she recognized the figure that appeared into the room. But something was different about him. His face was completely void of emotion and he didn’t even acknowledge her after her call.

Nonetheless, she raced towards him. She didn’t get very far because she got a painful shock when she hit an invisible force field in the middle of the room. She frantically looked around for the source for the electric barrier but found nothing. She reached out her hand and got shocked once more.

“Kai, KAI!” She yelled, “Can you hear me!” She waved her hands over her head, jumped up and down, and did just about anything to grab Kai’s attention. But nothing worked.  “Kai! We need to get out of here!” She cried out desperately.  Before she could continue her attempts to wake up the zombified Kai, something gradually appeared on the tan wall next to where Kai was standing. Upon closer observation, she recognized it to be a piano.

Kai’s arm reached up toward the piano and then moved his fingers. Strangely enough, notes echoed out as if Kai had actually played it. She was beyond confused now. What the heck was Kai doing and what does a shadowy piano have to do with anything?

Something caught her eye on the wall next to her and she realized that a separate piano had appeared beside her as well. She eyed it, almost expecting the piano to break out into a symphony. She waited a few moments, looking between Kai and her piano.

She reached up and mimicked what Kai had done earlier and moved her fingers. She nearly jumped when the piano played accordingly. With each note randomly played, she heard Kai gasp out. Whipping around, she saw Kai express something like pain and he flinched. He looked over toward her for the first time since she entered the room and glared at her.

Kai once again reached up and moved one of his fingers. One note rang out in the room. Ileana looked between the piano and Kai again, still confused. Kai played the one note again, and he was still glaring at her.

“Why are you glaring at me? What do you want me to do?” She asked out of frustration. Kai once again played the same note he played twice before.

“What? You want me to play? Fine!” She yelled and moved her hand up and played the exact same note. “There! Happy?”

Her ears picked up on an unknown noise from behind her and she turned around. The elevator’s closed doors inched open by a few centimeters. She turned back around and saw that Kai was no longer glaring at her. He moved his fingers again, playing the same note and then another new note.

She blinked a few times at Kai and his piano before she hesitantly copied the two notes he had just played. The noise behind her sounded out again. Looking to the elevator, she saw that the doors had opened even further.

She was forced to look back around when Kai started to play again. This time, he added two more new notes. She quickly copied him and eyed the elevator as soon as she completed the sequence. Right on the mark, the elevator’s doors opened even more.

So, this test is a memory game? She thought, And with every sequence I get right, the elevator doors inch a little bit more open?

Kai once again played some notes and she quickly copied him. She kept an eye on the opening between the doors and would guess that maybe a small mouse could fit through it now. She still would have to make a few more correct sequences before she could fit herself through it.

She copied Kai for a few more times, with new notes continually being added with each trial. Everything was going smoothly until she hit the wrong note by accident. She inhaled sharply when she realized her mistake.

She heard a large zapping like sound and Kai cry out in pain.  She watched as Kai shook as if he was being electrocuted. She moved forward impulsively but the electric force field acted up and made her painfully take a step back. She stared at Kai as he straightened up again with him flinching every now and then. She looked to the elevator for a quick second and cursed when she saw that the gap between the doors had shrunk.

And with every sequence I get incorrect, Kai gets a shock and the doors close. She concluded. That means that I cannot afford to make another mistake. She clenched her fists tightly as she tried to calm herself down. She nodded to Kai and cleared her senses, making sure to hear and see the exact notes Kai would play.

The game continued for a while with her making a mistake every now and then. She had finally gotten to the point where the elevator’s doors were wide enough for her to squeeze in.  She also knew Kai could probably fit through the opening as well.

She once again tried to reach for Kai, but the force field still prevented her from doing so.  She grew frustrated and conflicted. Time was slim and she didn’t want to leave Kai behind. Sadly, it seemed that there was no way for she to continue without her having to do so. Kai also, being in the empty state he was in, didn’t exactly help her out. She fought with herself for a few more moments before she came to her decision.

“Kai, you better believe that I’m going to come back for you!” She told him. “I don’t care if I get fried along the way, I will come back. Mark my words!”  She pointed at him haughtily before hesitantly moving backwards and then racing to the elevator. She shimmed herself through the opening and finally got herself through. As soon as she was fully in, the doors closed.

The elevator jerked and moved upward again, this time the number 2 was lite up on the button dash. Okay, that wasn’t so bad. If all tests are like that, I might be able to make it in time. …But why was Kai there? How did he get involved in this?

She again wasn’t given much time to answer her inner questions because the elevator doors opened again. It was completely black before her, thus making her hesitate. But, in the end she gathered up her nerves and stepped out of the elevator. And as soon as she exited, the doors promptly closed behind her.

Light immediately lite the entire room.  She became shocked by the view in front of her. There was a strange contraption that took up a large amount of space in the middle of the room. It was a bizarre cylindrical shape with a larger base and a smaller top. The sides were made from a series of sparkling red wires winded tightly and vertically together.  But what shocked her most was what was inside of the apparatus.

There inside of the stringed together cylinder stood Kai and Luhan, frozen in place like dolls. She quickly approached the large thing that caged them. Why is Luhan here and how did Kai get here in such a short amount of time?! When she reached out and touched the wires, it seemed to have activated something.

Luhan and Kai stances relaxed before they turned towards each other and eyed each other up and down.

“Oh my god, are you guys okay?” She asked, “I don’t exactly kn-“ She gasped when Kai threw a punch at Luhan. Luhan’s head swung back from the force of it. “KAI! WHY DID YOU-“ Luhan jumped up and kicked Kai hard in the chest, making Kai fall to the ground. “Luhan!” She cried in shock.

She tried to force herself through the wires and stop them from fighting but the wires were too close together. She pulled and tugged at the wires but they were stuck in place. All she could do was struggled with them as she helplessly watched Kai and Luhan battle with each other.

I have to stop this! She thought. She gripped the wires and attempted to climb in order to get to them through the opening at the top of the cylinder, but that idea was short lived.

“Guys! Please stop!” She cried as she flattened herself against the wires. She felt something press against her stomach. Looking down, she realized it was her satchel. I wonder…

She quickly opened the flap of her satchel and shoved her hand into it. Please please please have some wire cutters or something. She pleaded in her mind. Her hand came across something and she quickly pulled it out.  It was a small black cylinder that fit comfortable in her hand. She turned it around, but found nothing on it except for a button. So, she quickly pressed it and nearly fired her fingers off when a laser shot out of one of the ends. Not a wire cutter, but a mini light saber will do. She thought as she carefully handled the laser.

She held the laser to the wires, and it was like a hot knife through butter. She cut out a rectangle like shape with the laser and the excess wires fell to the ground. Clicking on the button again to turn it off, she shoved it back into her satchel and entered the cylinder where Kai and Luhan were still fighting.

Well, they were fighting each other until she entered it. When she put one foot into the cylinder, they both stopped fighting and turned toward her with expressionless faces. Then, at the same time, they leapt toward her.  She squeaked as she reflexively moved out of the way.  She narrowly dodged a punch thrown by Luhan and jumped when Kai tried to trip her.

Oh my god, what do I do now?She thought as she ran away from each of their attacks.  When she jumped out of the cylinder, they stopped pursing her and then started to fight each other again.  She helplessly looked at the two of them fighting, trying to find a solution to this test.

Maybe the cylinder…She thought as an idea hit her. She waited until Luhan or Kai came close to the opening she made with earlier. When Luhan came close, she grabbed onto his arm and pulled hard. Luhan, being shocked by the unexpected tug, stumbled backwards and affectively fell out of the cylinder. Ileana managed to get out of the way in time and didn’t get stuck under Luhan’s falling body. When Luhan hit the ground, he didn’t move.

“Luhan!” She shouted as she zoomed down to the fallen Luhan. He was out cold, almost as if he was sleeping. She looked up at Kai and saw he was frozen within the cylinder.  She stared at him, confused. She looked to the elevator and saw that the elevator’s doors had inched opened a little.

She then understood what she had to do. She had to get Kai out of there. She stood up and walked toward the opening in the cylinder. She tried to reach out to Kai and pull him as she did with Luhan, but he was frozen too far inside the cylinder for her to reach. She would have to enter it.

When she placed one foot into the cylinder, Kai came back to life. He lunged at her but she was prepared. She used his forward momentum and pulled him out of the cylinder as strong as she could. Like Luhan before him, Kai flopped to the floor and went into a sleeping state.

The elevator’s doors opened fully then. She grabbed onto Luhan’s and Kai’s arms and tried to drag them to the elevator. But, suddenly two wires magically came to life and wrapped themselves around Kai and Luhan. She tried to fight with the wires the best she could, but in the end, the wires won and trapped Kai and Luhan within the cylinder again. When they entered the cylinder they stood up on their own and froze, just like they did when she first entered the room.

She stared at them helpless when a beeping was heard from the elevator. She looked over and her eyes widened when she saw the doors slowly start to close. She hesitated, looking between the elevator and Luhan and Kai before she booked it to the elevator. She watched Kai and Luhan through the closing doors, guilt seeping through her. I don’t know why you guys are here or involved, but I will get you out of here. I will. I’ll come back. She told herself. I don’t know how, but I’ll do it.

The second test was definitely more difficult than she would have imagined. Seeing Kai and Luhan attacking each other was heart breaking for her. She was so thankful she had her satchel; she was right in thinking that it would come in handy.

She saw the number 3 light up accordingly when the elevator jerked upwards. She waited by the door, ready to take on whatever came at her. She couldn’t waste time, she was behind already. She had to up her game.

Finally, the doors opened again and unfortunately she was greeted with darkness once more. She squinted her eyes and tried to make out something. Her efforts were fruitless.

She took one brave step forward but was shocked when there was no solid ground to take her weight. Before she could adjust her balance, her body fell forward and she barely had enough time to register her surprise when her body plunged into cold waters.
