The Life Cycle of a Tree

Chapter One

The thumping inside her head wouldn’t tame itself. She let out a shameless groan as she sat up. My back is killing me, god why is my bed so hard? She slowly opened her eyes and what her sight greeted her with was… slightly unexpected.

“What the…”

She was now fully awake. The reason being that she was in a field. A big one. A very big one. And nothing else was in sight.

I must be dreaming.

She laid herself back down and squeezed her eyes shut; wishing herself back to her home and in her warm bed. After a few seconds, she peeked through her eyelids and saw that nothing had changed. She sat up and in a split second stood onto her feet. She spun around two, three, four times before stopping.

“Hello!” She shouted. No answer. “Is anyone there?!” Again, no reply. So her brain became reduced to a panicking mess. Where the hell was she? How did she get there?

“Ouch!” She lifted up her feet and was shocked to see them bare. Which brought her to ask herself why wasn’t she wearing any shoes either.  She continued to examine her surroundings until something caught her eye.

Is that…a kite? She thought.

She squinted her eyes in order to see the object in the sky clearer, but it was too far to focus. So she decided she had nothing to lose at this point and made her way over to the flying object. What was a casual walk, turned into a jog, and later turned into a full out sprint. As she became closer, her eyes could easily make out that the object in the sky was indeed a kite. Although her urgency was strange to her, she rationalized that whoever or whatever was at the end of the kite, would give her some answers.

She was so close now. So close that her eyes could even make out the outlines of two figures, who both happened to be facing away from her.  Then she found herself coming to a halt. Sure, she was happy she found someone in this weird abyss, but…then again, who were these people? What are they doing out in the middle of nowhere? Could she trust them? And what if they were a danger to her?

She looked down at the ground beneath her and picked up a medium size rock with some weight to it. She decided then that she would confront them, and if they were a danger to her…well, at least she had a rock, a nice plain old rock, to fend them off.

God, she hoped they were friendly.

She walked towards the clearing.  And according to their builds, she could make out that the outlines were male. One of them was flying the very kite she was intent on following earlier, while the other was sitting down and reading at a table. The scene before her was bizarre at best. She never knew of someone who brought a table out in the middle of a field and read, while their friend flew a kite absent mindedly. But she understood that her circumstances weren’t all that normal either. After all, she did just wake up and found herself deserted in a nearby field.

She wasn’t exactly trying to be quiet when she approached them. She paused when her feet met with mud. Yuck, she thought as she examined her dirtied feet. The sound of her feet meeting mud is what got the two figures to turn and face her. Her heart let out a small sigh of relief. Well, they look friendly enough. They each had asymmetrical haircuts and the one of them had eyes that could rivals a doe’s. They did appear slightly older than herself, though she knew appearances could be deceiving.

As the seconds went by, she felt more and more insecure. Not a word was exchanged nor a movement was made between them. All she knew was that the heat of their stares were starting to burn her. So, she decided to accept the challenge presented and stared back, alternating between them accordingly. The weight of the rock in her hand suddenly becoming more noticeable.

The figure sitting pushed his chair back and stood up. He made his way around the table and stood beside the other boy. Removing his gaze from her, he leaned towards the second boy and whispered something into his ear. She strained her hearing with hopes of hearing what he was saying. Her guesses were somewhere along the lines of Who is she?  Or You take left, I take right. Maybe even, Our dinner has shown up. Ugh…her imagination sometimes got the best of her.

Whatever the first boy said, the second nodded in response and nudged his head towards the table. The first boy made his way back and opened a book resting on it. Opening it to a random page, he removed what appeared to be a heavily decorated envelope and closed the book. Making his way back to the second boy, she noticed he looked up towards the sky with a look of hesitation.

“Do we have to do this? Can’t we just forget about it?” The first boy commented. The second boy’s stare finally left her to glare at the other boy.

“It has to start here, or else it will just happen without warning and all will be lost.” The second boy replied, with a slight edge in his reply. They had a little staring match of their own before the first boy sighed in defeat and they both turned to face her again.

“Welcome,” The second boy addressed her, “to Planet EXO.”  Confusion hit like a ton of bricks. She opened but no words came out. What did he mean by planet?

“I am D.O and this is Suho. We are two of the chosen messengers.” The second boy, D.O, nodded towards Suho, who in return nodded back. Suho then took a step towards her, which made her stiffen up like wood. With every step, the instinct to run away grew. She willed her feet to remain firmly planted in place and she found herself succeeding with her wishes. He stopped an arm’s length away from her and held out his hand. Within it, was the envelope he had retrieved from the book earlier.

“This,” Suho said, “is what will guide you.” She glanced down at the envelope he was offering and slowly took it from his hand. A small shiver went through her when her hand touched the envelope. She examined the envelope carefully. It was covered in elaborate drawings similar to those of runes.  She flipped the envelope over and went to open it.

“Don’t!” Suho shouted out and clamped his hands over hers, effectively stopping them from opening the envelope.  A shock jumped through her from the intense reaction. He was so close to her now, and she could see the panic as clear as day within his expression. She glanced down at her hands, which were still clutched in his. She tugged a little at them which led him to glance down at their hands and quickly let go. His eyes darted around awkwardly and he cleared his throat.

“Sorry to startle you,” He said, avoiding eye contact, “But you can’t open it yet. We can’t be seen.”

And that makes a lot of sense. She thought looking down at the letter.

“You’ll understand once you open it.” D.O replied, obviously noticing her confusion.

“But-“ She couldn’t hold back her words anymore, “Who are you? Why don’t you want to be seen? Is that why you are…uh here?” Her reply consisted of stares and silence.

“Your voice is quite beautiful.” D.O said, while examining her. “I feel more confident now.” And he let out a beautiful smile of his own. His compliment did not comfort her in any way though, if anything she felt more burdened. What did her voice have to do with anything?

“To answer your question, we are here for you. But we are also in hiding for the moment being. We’re wanted in the City and if we are found, we would be forced into some troublesome situations.” Suho sighed. This caught her attention.

“Are you…wanted criminals or something?” She hesitantly took a step back. The burst of laughter that came from the two boys left her even more uneasy.

“No no, not at all.” Suho smirked, “More the opposite. We find wanted criminals. D.O, here, is a seer. And I’m his guardian.”

Did he just say a seer?

“Who’s guarding who?” D.O snorted, “I’ve saved your countless times.”

“Wait,” She interrupted before Suho could reply, “A seer…like a person who can see into the future?”

“Is there any other kind?” D.O frowned. He looked slightly put off.

“Oh! Uh no no. Don’t be offended or anything. But from where I come from, seers aren’t considered …reliable sources of knowledge.”

Well, she certainly did offend him now.

“Reliable sources of knowledge? I’ll have you know that I’ve brought to knowledge the whereabouts of many wanted criminals and have saved this planet on numerous different occasions.” D.O glared a fierce gaze towards her.

“Once again, you misunderstood me. Where I come, there are many, many people who pretend to be legitimate seers-”

“But that’s treason!” Suho exclaimed. “They would be killed for their deception.”

She sighed, “That’s what I’m saying. I come from a different place. Things are different there. I am not saying that you are not a real seer, I’m just saying that many seers I know of, are fakes. It seems that in regard to people who see into the future, your world takes a different approach with them. We all clear now?” Suho and D.O examined her again, with curious eyes.

“Well, I figured you were from somewhere else entirely. Do your people dress the same way?” D.O commented, slowly walking around her. She looked down and she finally realized that she was still in her sleeping gear. It was a little bit cold the night before, so she wore sweat pants to bed with a regular pull over hoodie. So, it was safe to say she was mortified. Here she was, in another world, wearing her pajamas and she had no other clothes to change into. Never mind that two very good looking young man have been staring at her for the past 20 minutes.

“B-But, this is what I wear to sleep!” She protested, “I’m telling you, I was in my bed one minute and the next, I was lying in some field over there.” Suho and D.O snickered at her protests.

“You know, I’m starting to feel confident too.” Suho smiled as he looked her over, “She’s not all that bad. I think he’ll come to like her. She’s pretty cute.” She flushed almost immediately. Mischievous smirks appeared on their faces when they noticed.

“Definitely cute.” They replied in unison.

“Ahem, um. Thank you. But I have some questions.” She pressed the back of her hands to her cheeks, hoping the colour would fade.

“We can’t answer everything but we can try.” Suho replied.

“But, be quick. We don’t have much time. We can’t waste any more time or this won’t work.” D.O's  smirk was exchanged with serious expression. “Walk with us and we’ll answer what we can.” With that, they both turned their backs and walk toward the end of the clearing. She hesitated, but decided she had nothing to lose and followed them. Her thoughts were spinning with the different questions she wanted to ask. She thought she might as well start with the basics.

“So, where am I?”

“On Planet EXO. Right now we’re in Sector L, which is just outside Sector K and Sector M. Sectors M and K are in the City.” Suho replied. So, she’s on a different planet, in a random sector. Great.

“How did I get here?” She tried again.

“We’re not sure, we just knew you were coming from some place far away.” D.O replied. Even better.

“Why am I here?”

“The letter will tell you.”

That’s when she realized just how impossible it was going to be to get some answers out of them. So, she figured that she should try with with something even more simpler.

“Okay…then where are we going now?”

“Over there.” Suho raised an arm and pointed straight ahead. Right there, stood a shack-like barn. Strange, she thought, she swore that it wasn’t there before.

“But-“

“Sometimes, things only show up when they're needed.” D.O smirked at her with a glint in his eyes. She raised her eyebrow in response.

“Okay, and why are we going there?”  As they grew closer to the barn, she realized how aged it was. Was it really safe to get closer?

“Because this is where D.O saw us leaving you. And this is where it has to all begin.” Suho replied.

“Wait,” She froze, “Leave me? Begin what?” She was on a strange planet, with strange people. Strange or not, they were the only people she knew. And as far as she knew, her only hope of understanding what the hell was going on. “You just can’t leave me here.”

“As much as we appreciate the attachment you grew for us, this is as far as we can assist you.” D.O smirked, “At least for now.”

“Don’t worry so much.” Suho wrapped an arm around her shoulder and gave it a tight squeeze. “You’ll understand once you open the envelope.”

“Oh! That brings me to another question! Why can’t I open this with you guys around? Is there a tracker or camera in here?” She asked, trying hard to ignore how close they were to the barn. She really didn’t want them to leave her.

“You’ll understand once you open it.” D.O replied. Well, if I wanted a tape recording, I would have asked for one. She thought bitterly. “And it’s best you open it soon, before the sun sets.”

That’s when they found themselves at the entrance of the shack. She bit her lip with discontent. She turned her gaze to the two boys and sighed.

“Guess this is good bye” She looked down toward her feet caked in mud and grass..

“For now at least.”

She looked up at them to see them both smiling. She felt the warmth and sincerity from their expressions. She, in turn, felt comforted.

“Don’t worry. It will all come naturally. And I” Suho interrupted D.O with a nudge, “-we believe you will succeed.” She nodded and turned herself towards the shack. She quickly turned to face them again.

“Wait,” She called out. They froze and faced her. “Um, I never introduced myself. My name’s Ileana. It was nice to meet you both.”

They both smiled widely and bid her good bye. With that done, she took a deep breath and entered the barn without turning back.
