Chapter 10: Monochrome

Season of Gfriend

After being carried by the current, Yerin found herself on a bright and colourful place. The place seemed like it could be where unicorns live. It was pastel all over, with rainbows and fluffy cottons and cute flowers — it was exuding a friendly vibe but Yerin was somehow bothered. She liked it but it ticked her off, not to mention, she’s wet all over due to the water earlier.

“Dang it”, she whispered to herself while squeezing the water out of her hair and top.

“Why do I always get caught in weird situations like this?!”, she yelled and it echoed. Her voice resonated within the place, and she wasn’t too sure whether to like it or not.

She could feel her tummy aching, she must be hungry. There were lots of cotton candies and fruits hanging on the trees but she restrained herself for who on earth knows what might happen to her if she eats those.

As she was walking down this magical place, she could hear faint whispers filling up the place. At first the voices were low in volume, but gradually the volume rose.

“Hey, you know, that can’t be called whisper if it’s too loud”, Yerin spoke in a medium tone and then the voices stopped. She went on her trail, not knowing where to go. Shortly after, the voices came back, and that annoyed Yerin so much. “Just show yourself, dang it!” And they did.

Slowly, creatures emerged from the colourful trees and bushes. They were noticeably milky white in color and wearing thin fringe. Witnessing such peculiar moment, Yerin didn’t know whether to be flattered by the fact that she’s seeing lots of versions of herself. Yes, the creatures were all replicas of Jung Yerin herself.

“What on earth…”, she said.

Every Yerin was looking at her, and though it felt uncomfortable to be watched upon by yourself, the original Yerin stayed sane. As her eyes wandered from Yerin to Yerin, she realized the variations among them — one was a happy Yerin, one was a pissed off Yerin, an originally crying Yerin, a refined crying Yerin and all sorts of Yerins.

“What is this place? Who are you all? I mean…”

“I am Jung Yerin, and you are?”, the arrogant Yerin stepped forward, eyeing the original Yerin from head to toe. Shoot, that pissed off the latter, was she picking up a fight or what?

“Excuse you, but I’m the original Yerin”, another one, a seemingly confident Yerin stepped up.

“No, no… I am”, the fearful Yerin showed herself, trembling.

Every Yerin was raising their hands, claiming that they are Yerin, which they are, but prolly not quite. The original Yerin was overwhelmed by the scenes she was seeing.

The place was in total disorder and cacophony, until the mature Yerin yelled, “STOP!” Her voice struck every Yerin, including the original Yerin, making everyone behave.

“You are the original Yerin, I believe”, she pointed at Yerin who was still surprised from everything. The lost girl just nodded.

“We are basically you… to be exact, your personalities or characters”, the mature Yerin added.

Baffled by what the mature Yerin had said, Yerin shook her head a thousand times. Eyes wandering from places to places, shifting from Yerin to Yerin, the woman could not quite grasp the situation.

“What do you mean?”, she asked, voice filled with hesitation.

“As you can remember, you were dragged into this world-”, Yerin raised her hand, gesturing she’s cutting her sentence. “Dragged? I don’t know… we were just at our dorm”, she responded.

All of the Yerins looked at her, their gazes all signify different emotions. And though one would have expected that Yerin understood the meaning behind those gazes, she didn’t. This case in front of her made her realize how shattered and empty she is. She basically had all of these forms and yet she couldn’t pinpoint the reason behind them or who she really is.

“I… please don’t look at me like that, I feel like drowning when you do”, she meekly pleaded.

The scenario before her revealed her weakness. It was her over-compliance to the the public that made her strong self feeble. She now had nothing, her character is now nothing but a range of skins she could fit into depending on what is pleasing to the eyes of people; it was terrible.

“Yerin, listen to me”, the mature Yerin snapped her out of her own little world.

At that moment, the cool breeze just swept under their skins, reaching every inch of their bodies. Clouds of scribbles kept on condensing inside the doll-like creature, soon they would pour rain inside her.

“I don’t know who I am anymore. There’s nothing inside of me. I see nothing inside of you”, she collapsed on her knees. Fingers running and locking onto her own strands of hair — she couldn’t stop herself from doing so. The rest of the Yerins looked at her so painfully they gained the same hue of emotion - anguish.

From that, the colourful world vanished. Pastels turned to greys and whites — a monochromatic field replaced the light and airy atmosphere of the place. Cotton clouds became dark and saturated, so saturated the sky tears began to fall.

As Yerin continued to weep in her own demise, the rest of her personalities came to her and embraced her. It was a gentle and soft embrace; ‘twas enough to melt the accumulating ice within Yerin.

Shortly after, when Yerin has somehow calmed down, they all gathered to a circle. The mature Yerin tried to opened up the topic she hasn’t elaborated yet, but before that, Yerin apologized for possibly causing the destruction of their colourful world.

“Yerin, I told you you were dragged here, and it was because you needed it”, the mature Yerin smiled. “A signal was given to us that something happened in your world, and soon enough, we discovered that you arrived”, the bright Yerin continued.

“What signal? What need? I’m sorry… I know nothing”, Yerin sniffed as she felt the guilt and emptiness eating her up again.

“It was a signal that you need help”, the funny Yerin jolted.

“Why do I need help?”, she responded. On that note, she delved deeper into her memories and she remembered something that she might’ve needed help.

“Wait, is it Sowon-unnie’s sudden astral transformation?”, Yerin asked to her personalities. They fell silent for they didn’t know. They were fragments of Yerin’s mind and heart, but they don’t have any connection or affinity with the reality Yerin came from.

At first, Yerin doubted her question but then she confirmed it with her thoughts. “That’s it! That was our trouble… and the 97 liners… we needed help!”, she skipped to her successive drawing of conclusions.

“But if we needed help, how come I am alone? Where are the others?”, she asked, dipping herself to the pool of sadness.

The fearful Yerin tiptoed her way to Yerin, who was sitting cold on the grey ground. As her trembling hands held Yerin’s, their eyes met and the latter could feel her fearful self’s courage to speak up to her.

“I may be scared all the time… but I will help you get back to yourself and the rest of the members”

With that, Yerin burst to tears. It was an awesome yet weird experience to be moved by yourself. The weight of her words struck her, and that’s when she realized she had to stand and rise up.

Consequently, the mature Yerin explained to her how they came to life. The different Yerins actually lived in this world, within her subconsciousness, since Rough era - when Jung Yerin was criticized so much of her ‘ugly’ and ‘fake’ crying face. From that point, everyone they emerged as Yerin was trying to hide them in her real world. She even explained that some of her personalities, like the originally crying Yerin and bright Yerin, would faint from time to time as Yerin kept on concealing them to the public.

When a personality is being deprived of their right to be free, they get weaker and weaker - their soul being absorbed by the darkness lurking within the then pastel features of their world. However, that darkness is now evident in this world as Yerin lost it earlier. Soon, the darkness will have its own face, and they don’t know what worse thing could possibly happen if it does.

Upon hearing the mature Yerin’s explanation, Yerin could feel her heart was beating faster than before. There was a decent amount of evidence to hate herself, because she’s put her personalities into the brink of danger, not realizing that she’s put herself into it as well.

Shortly after, she could hear her own voice was yelling at her once again. They were filled with eerie and painful sounds, like a broken siren ringing inside Yerin’s head. She was panting in much anxiety and fear, and even though she’s promised herself to rise up, she still couldn’t after all.

The other Yerins were gathering to her, trying to ease her pain, but she couldn’t hear them. There was a greater darkness enveloping Yerin’s heart, and yes, it manifested. Her personalities began to fade one by one, and their screams added to Yerin’s chaotic head. They were dissolving into light foam, and Yerin witnessed everything. She witnessed being stripped off of her self, and at the very second her last personality disappeared, she fell on her knees, feeling like an empty room, sending off her last tear.
