As Long as You're Safe

Deal? Deal.

Hyun Woo is sitting on the couch with Ji Hyun. She is all smiles, but he is still worried. He's worried what his parents will say when they come back. He's worried where Ah Ran is. He's worried that he overreacted.

That night, Hyun Woo is sending Ji Hyun to her car. She kisses him goodbye, and he walks back inside. Hyun Woo walks up to his room. The broken antique is still standing on the shelf. The bedroom is the same, but Ah Ran isn't there. Hyun Woo takes a shower and climbs into bed. He's finally sleeping alone again. The way he wants. Hyun Woo lies down and stares at the ceiling. He turns to the left and stares at the empty spot that Ah Ran used to sleep. Without her, the bed is cold. Without her, the room is quiet. He closes his eyes and finds it hard to fall asleep.

It's been two days, and Ah Ran isn't back yet. Hyun Woo and the workers are the only ones home.

“Don't you miss her,” the head worker asks. “She used to help so much. Without her, I feel like it's so quiet. Like something’s missing.”

“I know,” another worker says. “I can't believe that Ah Ran left because of one broken toy.”

“Don't say that,” another worker says. “If master hears, he'll yell at you.”

“Guys,” another worker adds. “I have something to confess.”

“What is it,” the head worker asks.

“I'm the one who broke the figure.”

“What,” everyone exclaims.

“You know what you did,” the head worker asks. “You made them have an argument. Ah Ran isn't here because of you. We have no idea where she is.”

“I know,” the worker says. Her head is down. “I know that what I did is unforgiving. I'll go tell the master.”

She slowly heads to the living room, but Hyun Woo isn't there. She walks up to the bedroom and sees Hyun Woo standing at the shelf. She knocks on the door, and he turns around.

“What is it,” Hyun Woo asks.

“I have something to say,” she says.

“Okay.”

“The figure,” she pauses. Her head is hung low. “I broke it.”

“You did,” Hyun Woo says trying to suppress his anger.

“I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to break it. I was only told to come clean your room. I accidently bumped into the shelf and the figure fell. I know I'm not supposed to touch that, and I didn't mean to. Now you and Ah Ran are in a fight and we have no idea where she is. I know I'm wrong. I understand if you want to fire me.”

“You know. I'm very mad right now. I'm supposed to yell at you and fire you, but I won't. I'll dock your pay for this month.”

“Thank you, master.”

“Go,” he commands.

She rushes out.

He sighs and runs his fingers through his hair. He is very mad, but what can he do. What is done is done. He does need to go find Ah Ran though. He needs to apologize to her for acting childish. Hyun Woo grabs his phone from the bed and calls Ah Ran. He hears her phone ringing from the desk. He turns his head and sees her phone there. Hyun Woo sighs and hangs up. He calls her parents and ask them if she was there, but she wasn't.

“Is something wrong,” her mom asks.

“We just got into an argument,” Hyun Woo explains. “She ran off, and I don't know where she is.”

“She likes to go shopping to relieve stress. Maybe she's shopping.”

“Do you know where she likes to shop,” he asks.

“She likes to go where there are food stalls.”

“Okay. Thank you, mother.”

“Make sure to patch everything up.”

“I will, mother. Have a nice day.”

Hyun Woo hangs up and goes grab his wallet. He goes to the front door, grabs his key, and heads to his car. Hyun Woo turns the car on and drives off. He goes to three different places and he couldn’t find Ah Ran. He tries another one. Hyun Woo looks and looks and finally sees Ah Ran at a food stall.

“Two please,” Ah Ran tells the lady.

The lady hands her two, and Ah Ran hands her some money.

Hyun Woo walks over to her.

“Are you going to eat the both of those,” he asks her.

“What are you doing here,” she asks not interested.

“Those are the meatballs you had the other night,” he says.

She eats one whole and walks away.

“Ah Ran,” Hyun Woo says following her. “Will you listen to me?”

She doesn’t reply because she doesn’t want to, and is full.

“I’m sorry,” he says. “I know I over reacted. I was childish like you said. I came here today to take you back.”

She stops walking and looks at him in the eyes. She swallows and takes another meatball. Ah Ran goes to other food stands and start to eat. She eats and eats and eats while he watches and watches and watches.

“Aren’t you full yet,” he asks.

She shakes her head since is full of bread.

He laughs. “You eat more than I thought.”

She glares at him, and he apologizes.

She stops at a store that sells sausages.

“One please,” she tells the man. “Thank you,” Ah Ran tells the man. She pays him and takes the sausage.

“Are you not going to talk to me? Are you just going to eat,” he asks.

She doesn’t answer.

“I’m full just looking at you eat,” Hyun Woo says.

Ah Ran goes to another food stall and orders. She takes out her money to pay, but Hyun Woo pays instead of her.

“Enjoy,” he tells her.

She doesn’t complain. Instead, she’s eating to her heart’s content.

He continues to pay, and she continues to eat. Once in awhile, he would see her smiling, and then he would see her smiling completely when she has food in her hand and mouth. He couldn’t help but laugh. Hyun Woo would sometimes buy him some food as well, and the both of them would eat together.

Ah Ran takes a bite out of a cookie and continues to walk around. Ah Ran swallows. She suddenly starts coughing.

“Are you okay,” he asks.

She shakes her head.

“I’ll go buy you something to drink,” he says.

He runs to a stall and buys a bottle of water. Hyun Woo runs back to her. He opens the bottle and hands it to her. She drinks it and sighs.

“Thank you,” she says.

“No problem,” he answers. “Still want to eat?”

She finishes the cookie and nods her head.

“Go to whatever stall you want,” he says. “I’ll pay.”

She smiles and marches to another stall.

He couldn’t help but smile. Seeing Ah Ran like that makes him think that she’s really cute. He hasn’t seen her so happy before, and no woman has stuffed their face in front of him before not even Ji Hyun. They always wanted to look feminine and poise towards him, but Ah Ran is different. She doesn’t care. He follows her and watches her eat.

“Are you not full,” he asks her.

She shakes her head.

They continue to walk, but is stopped by an announcer.

“Congratulations,” the announcer says with joy. “You are the sixtieth couple to walk by here. If you would, please come up here.”

“Us,” Hyun Woo asks pointing his finger to himself.

“Yes, you! Come on up.”

Hyun Woo and Ah Ran slowly approach the announcer.

“We can begin,” the announcer says. “If you’re willing to stay, please do! We’re going to play a game! The man will carry their girls. Whoever is the last one standing wins! If you win, you’ll get this big fluffy teddy bear!”

Upon hearing the teddy bear, Ah Ran turns her head to see the announcer holding onto the big green teddy bear.

“Do you want it,” Hyun Woo asks.

“It’s okay,” she says.

“No. Let’s try.”

“Let’s get started,” the announcer says.

A few couples leave while some stayed.

Some carried their women while some gave them a piggyback ride.

Ah Ran hops onto Hyun Woo’s back. He grunts and stumbles.

“I think you ate too much,” Hyun Woo says. “You’re so heavy.”

She slaps him on the shoulder.

“Let’s begin,” the announcer announces.

Almost an hour has past and most of the couples has already lost the game. A few more minutes past, and now it’s only Hyun Woo and Ah Ran and another couple.

“Only two couples left,” the announcer says. “How sweet! Let’s see which one will last to the end.”

“Are you tired,” Ah Ran asks Hyun Woo.

“Yes.”

“Then you can put me down.”

“No. You want that teddy bear.”

“It’s okay.”

“No. I’ll keep going.”

“No. Put me down. Look, you’re sweating. How embarrassing.”

Hyun Woo thinks about it and puts Ah Ran down.

The crowd awes.

“We have a winner,” the announcer screams. “Congratulation! You two get the teddy bear!”

The couple takes the teddy bear and thanks the announcer.

“That was a close competition,” the announcer says to Ah Ran and Hyun Woo. “For coming in second place, I will give you a prize as well.” He shows them two bracelets. One pink and the one blue. “These two bracelets will be a sign for your relationship. No matter where you are, you’ll be tied with these bracelets. Even if you break up, you’ll come together again.”

“Thank you,” Ah Ran says taking the bracelets.

They walk away.

“Do you believe his words,” Hyun Woo asks.

“No. I don’t. Just because we have a couple of bracelets doesn’t mean that they’re going to decide our fate. The decisions that we make are what causes our fate to happen.”

“Either way,” Hyun Woo takes the blue bracelet and wears it. “You wear yours, and I’ll wear mine. I think it’s cute.”

Ah Ran puts her bracelet on.

“So what do you say,” he asks. “You forgive me?”

“I really don’t want to,” she answer bluntly. “But since you bought me so much food and put up with my weight, I’ll forgive you.”

Hyun Woo smiles.

“But don’t ever overreact again. If you do, I really won’t forgive you.”

“I promise,” he says putting his right hand up.

“And stop giving me commands.”

“What do you mean?”

“ Instead of saying,‘Let’s go.’,” she imitates his voice. “Ask me. ‘Will you please go with me?’. Even though I work a lot, I’m your wife not your worker.”

“I’ll try to change that. I’m just so used to giving commands.”

“I’m looking forward to what you can change.”

They stay silent.

“So who broke your figure,” she asks.

They’re walking around again.

“One of the workers,” Hyun Woo replies.

“Did you fire her?”

“No. I’m docking her pay.”

“I guess that’s better than firing her. I want to eat more.”

“You’re not full yet,” he asks shocked.

“No.”

“Fine. Let’s go.”

She smiles and walks to another food stall.

“Let’s go home,” Hyun Woo says. “I’ll pay again when we come back.”

“You said it yourself,” Ah Ran says happy.

She is munching on an egg roll and is holding onto a plate of egg rolls.

When she returns home, everyone is overjoyed. They welcome her back, and the worker who caused the figure to break couldn’t help but apologize to Ah Ran.

“It’s okay,” Ah Ran says. “You didn’t do it on purpose.”

Ah Ran calls Seol and tells her that she’s returned with Hyun Woo.

“I told you,” Seol says happy. “Once you two are happy again, you would be together again.”

“I wouldn’t say we’re happy,” Ah Ran says.

“Did you go back to him or did he find you while you were pigging out?”

“He came to pick me up. He also apologized.”

“So he knows who broke the toy?”

“Yeah. One of our workers broke it.”

“I think that’s sweet.”

“What’s so sweet about this?”

“He knows you didn’t break it, so he came to find you and apologized first.”

“Yeah. I guess that’s a little sweet, but you know what was sweeter? Me getting to eat all those delicious food!”

“Oh my gosh! I bet that cost you a fortune! You could eat an entire buffet.”

“No it didn’t. Hyun Woo paid for most of it.”

“He did? You probably spent all his money.”

“I’m sure I didn’t. He was willing to pay. I didn’t ask him.”

“He probably did that because he felt bad for yelling at you.”

“Anyway, the food was delicious.”

“And it was even more delicious because Hyun Woo paid for it right?”

“I’ve have to admit, yes.”

“You love him don’t you?”

“Don’t start this. I’m going to hang up.”

“Fine! But I can tell by the way you talk.”

“Bye!!”

Ah Ran hangs up.

Little did she know, Hyun Woo was listening to her conversation, and little did he know he was smiling at her.

When Hyun Woo calls to tell Ji Hyun, she wasn’t happy to hear that Ah Ran was back.

He takes his antique to a crafts store and asks them to help him fix it. His antique wasn't the same anymore, but it was fixed, and he got it back.

Ah Ran is outside cutting the shrubs to be in an even length.

The sun is shining down on her. The sky is clear, and the wind is calm.

She is wearing a hat to help cover the sun from her, but she is still boiling hot. Ah Ran is also wearing a pretty thin flowy shirt and black jeans.

As she is cutting, So Eun comes out to help her.

“So Eun,” Ah Ran says. “Will you go get me some water?”

“Yes.”

So Eun heads back inside leaving Ah Ran behind. Ah Ran hears someone walking. Thinking that it was So Eun, she turns to look, but it was only Hyun Woo. She turns back to work.

“Do you need help,” he asks her.

“If you want to help,” Ah Ran says. “Water the grass.”

He does so.

Ah Ran fans herself. She feels like she's going to faint. Ah Ran starts to cut the shrubs again.

“Here,” she hears So Eun shout. “Your water.”

“Thank you,” Ah Ran says with a smile. She accepts the bottle, but drops it. Ah Ran falls to the ground.

“Are you okay,” So Eun asks squatting down to Ah Ran’s level. She catches Ah Ran, so Ah Ran doesn’t fall over.

Ah Ran shakes her head. She feels herself trembling.

Hyun Woo hears the commotion and turns to see what happened. When he sees that Ah Ran is on the ground, he runs to her.

“What happened,” Hyun Woo asks. He squats next to Ah Ran, and helps hold her.

“She just collapsed,” So Eun says worried.

Hyun Woo takes Ah Ran into his arms. He carries her inside and sets her down on the couch.

“Are you okay,” he asks her. He takes a seat next to her.

She is leaning on the couch. Her lips pale.

“Give me some water,” she breathes.

“Okay. I'll go get you water,” he says.

He quickly runs to the kitchen and asks for a water bottle. The workers quickly give him one.

“What's wrong,” the head worker asks.

“Ah Ran collapsed,” So Eun says.

She is holding the water bottle she gave to Ah Ran earlier.

Hyun Woo runs back to Ah Ran. He opens the water bottle and sits next to her.

“Here,” he says.

He carefully gives her the water. She swallows.

“Thank you,” she says.

“What happened,” he asks.

She lies back on the couch.

“I think I was just dehydrated,” she answers.

“I'll call the doctor.”

“You don't have to.”

“I'm going to.” And so he does.

Ah Ran is lying in bed while the doctor is examining her. He checks her pulse and takes her temperature.

“How is she,” Hyun Woo asks.

“She'll be fine by tomorrow as long as she gets some rest. She was overheated and dehydrated that's what made her faint.”

“Okay. Thank you for coming in.”

“No problem.”

“I'll walk you out.”

Hyun Woo and the doctor leaves.

The workers rush in and asks if Ah Ran is okay.

“I'm fine,” she says sitting up. “I just need to rest.”

“That's a relief,” the head worker says.

“I was so worried,” So Eun says.

“I'm fine,” Ah Ran says. “You guys should head back to work.”

“If you need anything just give us a call,” the head worker says.

“I will.”

All the workers leave the room.

Ah Ran lies back down, and Hyun Woo comes back a few minutes later.

“How are you feeling,” he asks her.

He stands next to her side of the bed.

“I'm fine. I just feel a little weak,” she replies.

“Are you hungry? I'll go get you some food.”

“I'm not hungry.”

“The doctor said you can't work, so if you're ever bored, just wake up and walk around a little.”

“Okay.”

“I'll be here. If you need anything just tell me.”

She nods her head.

He walks over to his antiques and start to polish them.

Ah Ran looks as he does so. She sits up and leans on the backboard of the bed.

“How long have you been collecting those,” Ah Ran asks him.

“For almost five years now,” he replies.

“How did you start collecting it? What's your backstory?”

“Well my friends and I went to watch the first movie together. I thought it was cool, so I went to watch the sequel. I ended up liking the movies very much. When I heard that these action figures will be selling, I told myself I had to collect them, and that's how I started. The first one I bought is this one,” he says showing her the figure that broke the other day.

“That's why you were throwing such a big fuss, but I think it's cool that you have those collections. Before I married you, I had a collection of my own.”

“What was it?”

“I collected teddy bears.”

“Teddy bears? What kind?”

“Any kind. I didn’t care. As long as it is a bear and stuffed.”

“That's why you eyed that teddy bear so closely the other day. I'm sorry I couldn't win it for you.”

“It's fine. I was heavy from eating so much.”

“You were. I'm not lying.”

Ah Ran rolls her eyes.

“Why don’t you bring them here,” he asks. “I mean your teddy bears.”

“I thought you wouldn’t like it,” she answers.

“No. Let’s go bring them over one day. I can make some room on this shelf, or we can go buy another shelf and display them like this.”

“I have my own shelf for them.”

“Even better. Let’s go bring it someday.”

“Sure. I’d like that.”

Hyun Woo’s phone rings, so he answers it.

“What are you doing,” Ji Hyun asks on the other line.

“I’m at home,” Hyun Woo replies.

“Great! Let’s go eat. I want to try that italian restaurant out today.”

“I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Ah Ran is hurt. I have to take care of her.”

“Again? She was hurt the other day.”

“Today is a lot more severe than the other day. I’m sorry I can’t go.”

He knows that Ji Hyun is mad.

“I’ll make it up to you another day,” Hyun Woo says.

“Forget it.”

Ji Hyun hangs up.

Hyun Woo hangs up and puts his phone in his pocket.

“Was that Ji Hyun,” Ah Ran asks.

“Yeah,” Hyun Woo replies.

“Did she want to go out?”

“Yeah.”

“You should’ve gone. I’m fine. I have plenty of people to look after me, and trust me, I wouldn’t have worked. The doctor said I shouldn’t.”

“So you listen to the doctor, but not to me?”

“You’re not a doctor. You could be wrong.”

Hyun Woo puts is antique away.

“Anyway, I’m not going,” he says. “If you need me, I’ll be downstairs.”

He walks out of the room.

Ah Ran sits there and stares out the window.

When night time comes, Hyun Woo brings up a platter of food for Ah Ran. She eats in bed while Hyun Woo looks at her.

“Is something wrong,” Ah Ran asks. She sets the spoon down. “Do I have food on my face?” She touches her lips.

“No. I was just spacing out.”

She didn’t believe him, but she let it go.

“Why aren’t you eating,” she asks him.

“I’ll eat after you’re done eating,” he answers.

“It’s okay. I’ll just bring this down when I’m done.”

“Eat,” he says feeding her a spoonful of rice.

She takes the spoon from him, and starts to eat again. After she eats, he takes the platter downstairs and heads to the dining room. No one was there. There was no food on the table.

So Eun walks in.

“Did you guys clear the table,” Hyun Woo asks.

“Yes, master,” So Eun replies. “We thought you would be eating with Ah Ran.”

“Please set the table for me again.”

“Yes, master.”

And so they do. After Hyun Woo eats, he goes upstairs to see that Ah Ran has already showered, changed, and sleeping. He tries to be his quietest when he is changing and taking a shower. Hyun Woo creeps into bed quietly and lies on his back.

Ah Ran turns over and faces Hyun Woo.

He turns his head to face her.

She is still sleeping.

He turns his body to face her. He stares at her sleeping figure. She looks like she has recovered well. He extends his arm over to her and tucks her hair strand behind her ear. His hand travels to her cheeks, and he gently cups it. Hyun Woo starts to her cheek, but immediately removes his hand when she starts to fidget. He lies very still until she stops. Once she does, he smiles and continues to stare at her.

The next morning, when Ah Ran wakes up, she sees that Hyun Woo is sleeping close to her. Very close to her. His face and hers were just inches away. She immediately turns away and scoots away from him. Her heart is running laps inside her. Ah Ran takes a peek at him. He is sleeping so peacefully. His hair is a bit messy, and he is lying on his stomach. Seeing the way that he sleeps makes her heart beat faster. She clutches onto her blanket.

Hyun Woo starts to stir.

Ah Ran quickly hops out of bed and heads to the bathroom. She locks the door behind her and puts her hand to her beating heart.

Hyun Woo wakes up to an empty bed. He hears the water in the bathroom running, so he knows that Ah Ran is in there.

In the late evening, Ji Hyun comes by. She tells Hyun Woo to take her out for missing yesterday's date.

Hyun Woo agrees.

Ah Ran is once again working around the house.

“Is it okay for you to be working already,” So Eun asks her.

“It's okay. I feel a lot better.”

“That's good to hear.”

“Thank you, So Eun for being there for me yesterday.”

“It was nothing. I didn't even do anything. Master was the one who helped you.”

“He did, but you were there too. Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

Night comes. Hyun Woo isn't back yet. Ah Ran has already taken a shower. She's changed into her pajamas and is already lying in bed. She doesn't even know when Hyun Woo came back because she fell asleep.

Hyun Woo and Ji Hyun went to watch a movie and went to play. When they were hungry, Hyun Woo took her to the Italian restaurant. After they ate, Ji Hyun wanted to play some more, so Hyun Woo took her out again. When night came, Ji Hyun still didn't want to go home.

“We have to,” Hyun Woo says. “It's already past midnight.”

“Can't we stay a little longer,” she asks.

“We can't.”

“How about we stay at my place tonight?”

“Ji Hyun, we can't. I'll take you home.” And so he does.

“I really want you to stay with me tonight,” Ji Hyun says.

“I have to go home,” Hyun Woo replies. “We can meet again tomorrow.”

She clings onto his arm.

They are parked in Ji Hyun’s driveway. Hyun Woo is still on the driver's seat, and Ji Hyun is on the passenger's seat.

“Ji Hyun,” Hyun Woo says pulling away from Ji Hyun. “It's late. I'm tired.”

“Okay,” she says upset.

She pulls back a little, and goes in again to kiss him.

“Good night,” she says.

“Night.”

Ji Hyun climbs out of the car. She waves him goodbye.

Hyun Woo backs out of the driveway and heads home.

When he enters the bedroom, the first thing he notices is Ah Ran. She is already sleeping. Her back is facing him. He quickly takes a shower, changes into his pajamas, and crawls into bed. He lies on his back and stares at the ceiling for a while before he turns his body to face Ah Ran. She is sleeping peacefully. Her hair all over the pillow. He lies his head on his arm and slowly falls asleep like that.

Ah Ran stirs in her sleep. She turns her body towards the edge of the bed and pulls the blanket with her.

Hyun Woo stirs in his sleep and searches for the blanket with his hand. Once he finds it, he pulls it to his side.

Ah Ran grimaces and turns around. She searches for the blanket with her hand. Once she finds it, she pulls the blanket to her.

Hyun Woo scoots closer to the blanket and goes under the covers.

They sleep for a few more hours.

Ah Ran stirs and stretches. She extends her arms over her head and hits Hyun Woo on the cheek.

He groans, and she immediately turns to face him.

“Did I punch you,” she asks still sleepy.

“Yeah, and it hurts,” he replies in his groggy voice.

“I’m sorry, I was stretching. Where did I punch you?”

“On the cheek.” He cups his right cheek. His eyes are still closed.

“Let me see.” She scoots closer to him and removes his hand from his cheek. “It’s red. Should I get an ice pack?”

“No. I’ll be fine.” He goes back to sleep.

She notices how close they are together and scoots back. Ah Ran takes the blanket with her, but she stops when she feels something tugging on it. That’s when she notices that Hyun Woo and her are sharing blankets. She fully wakes up.

“How dare you,” she yells.

Hyun Woo wakes up from her loud voice.

“What is it,” he asks.

She throws the blanket to his side covering his head.

“Where’s my blanket,”  she asks.

Ah Ran sits up and looks for her blanket.

“Did you steal mine,” he asks removing the blanket from his head.

She looks on her side of the ground, but the blanket wasn’t there.

“Where is it,” she asks.

“No wonder it felt like the blanket was being pulled away from me,” he says.

Hyun Woo sits up.

Ah Ran looks at his side of the ground and sees the blanket there.

“How did my blanket end up over there,” Ah Ran asks.

She goes back to her side, and Hyun Woo picks the blanket up for her.

“I told you,” Hyun Woo says. He hands her the blanket. “Your blankets and pillows always fall on my side.”

“How does that happen,” Ah Ran asks.

“How should I know.”

“I’m sorry,” she says. “Let’s hope this doesn’t happen again.”

She quickly climbs out of bed and heads to the bathroom.

Hyun Woo is sitting there with a smile on his face. He didn’t know that Ah Ran was sharing a blanket with him, but he did feel her warmth beside him. He could still feel it. Hyun Woo climbs out of bed and starts to fix the bed.

Ah Ran comes out and heads to the closet.

Hyun Woo heads to the bathroom then to the closet.

Ah Ran is still in here. She’s changed into a pair of yellow shorts and is now looking through her shirts.

Hyun Woo goes through his shirt, but he isn’t going through his shirt. His hands may be moving, but he was thinking about Ah Ran.

“You’re not going to ask how late I stayed out last night,” he asks.

“No. You came home safe. That’s all that matters,” Ah Ran answers.

She picks out a white shirt and walks out of the closet. Ah Ran goes to the bathroom and changes into her shirt.

Chapter 10: I think how you did this story was fine. Not every person should fit your idea of them. It is creative license. In the end you turned Hyunwoo into the person who will make a great husband and gave your readers a happy ending. Very sweet and hits the fluffy romance. Nice!
