By the time Shuya’s next shift at work came, his anger had worn off, and he was already regretting his decision.   He had overacted, and he knew that. He couldn’t be entirely sure of what had happened between Frankie and her classmate, but he had ruined the chance to find out. Embarrassment at the way he had acted was what kept him from sending any message he wrote, or call he tried to make; he let days go by without saying or doing anything to fix the destruction he had caused. When his next shift at work came he had wallowed in his regret long enough to resolve to do whatever it took to at least have a conversation with Frankie, to apologize, and ask for her forgiveness. He sent her a text asking to talk and then got ready for work, hoping to get a response at least before his shift ended. He stuck his phone in his pocket along with his wallet and headed for his door, pulling it open and stepping across the threshold.   A rattling on his door stopped him in the doorway. With a frown Shuya turned his eyes to the door to inspect it, traveling up near the hinges first and then downward. He remained still for a while as his mind worked to wrap around the meaning behind this gesture, absorbing the fact that she had been there at some point overnight, and that she didn’t intend to return.
