Shuya had just been arriving to Trader Joe’s for a six-hour shift when he had run into Frankie; for the entirety of his shift his mind was stuck on her, on the sadness on her face when she looked at him, and the words she had said.
It hadn’t been the first time that he had been caught by a girlfriend – San Francisco was unsurprisingly small for a guy like him – and it wasn’t the first time that a girl had broken up with him for it, but it was the first time that it had affected him so greatly, or at all, for that matter. Shuya never dated a girl with malicious intentions, but he never felt remorse if something didn’t work out. That was the reason why he always kept things casual between himself and his girlfriends; there was no need for remorse that way. When Frankie broke up with him that afternoon, it caused a pain to form in his chest, and his heart to sink into his stomach. He had never truly meant to cause her any pain, but what could he have expected? His set up was predominantly for his benefit.
He finished up with work around nine that night and made his way back to the First House, his mind still weighed down heavily with thoughts of Frankie; he gave halfhearted greetings to the people he passed as he dragged himself up to the third floor, bypassing open doors as he headed down the hallway to his dorm. As he walked he spotted someone heading out of their own open door, dressed casually in sweats and a long sleeved shirt, his hair carelessly pushed out of his face.
“Ah, Shu,” Senri Yamada called out as his eyes landed on him. “Okaeri.” Shuya said nothing, lost in his thoughts as he continued down the hallway. “Shu?”
