The Air Fairy

Fairies

It didn't take long before the four girls arrived at the internet cafe. With the skies getting darker and it was getting more crowded as people got off work and wanted to relieve themselves by playing computer games. It was prime time and the girls had much difficulty finding the girl, especially with a crowd of policemen outside due to the situation Hayoung had caused earlier. There were arguments and crazy talks from the men who gained back their consciousness, saying that they saw a monster who manipulated air.

"Wow...what happened here?" whispered Bomi to her same-aged friend as the four carefully observed the situation.

"Looks like that girl we were finding for, used her powers here..." said Eunji with a thought.

"You mean she might have already discovered her powers like me?" asked Naeun.

"It is possible. Unlike Bomi and Eunji who only recently found their powers, there is also a possibility of her getting her powers long before, just like Naeun-ah." said Chorong as she looked at her palm where the flare indicated where she was.

"She's inside. Let's go." said Eunji who didn't want to waste time.

Hayoung on the other hand, had already been in the cafe for over 12 hours which exceeded the maximum limit she could stay. With a sigh, hoodie over her head, the girl shut down the computer and checked her phone. There were 31 missed calls from Mum, 208 unread messages from 2 chats. She hated the realisation of reality after finishing her computer games. In fact, she dreaded living with her family. Walking past the once empty computer desks now, packed with anonymous people who were mostly guys, she wanted to walk even slower and make time stop. She didn't want to face the horror at home again. She didn't want to get scolded again. She hated every single second the moment she was at home.

Eunji entered the cafe first and was simply amazed at how packed it was. Everyone just stared at their screen like zombies, attacking away on their keyboard as they stayed in silence, only hearing whatever that was played through their big headphones.

"Gamers are really crazy people..." mumbled Eunji to herself. Suddenly, a tall person who covered itself with a grey hoodie  walked past the short girl and accidentally bumped into her shoulder. Before she could even say anything, the person left quickly like a cheetah.

"W-What, hey!" said Eunji as she immediately went outside to catch the grey-hooded person.

Hayoung felt something suspicious and her steps became faster, she didn't want to attract any attention of sort especially with her self-known powers. But the older girl was faster, all of the sudden, Eunji's hand tightly gripped onto Hayoung's firm hands that contained so much of muscle from her constant exercise at the keyboard.

"Hey. You." said Eunji as she caught her breath.

"Please. Leave me alone."

"I just need to ask you something."

"Sorry, I'm a little busy right now."

"It won't take long! I swear!"

"I'm sorry but-" Before Hayoung could say any words, Bomi managed to catch up and pulled Hayoung's hoodie open from behind. In that very moment, Hayoung turned around and revealed her face. But her eyes met with Eunji's and seeing this familiar face, she froze. Eunji's eyes widened as she realised who it was.

"H-Hayoungie? You're Oh Hayoung right?" said Eunji, wondering if it was really her.

"Eunji unnie? What are you doing here?" said Hayoung startled, seeing her.

"What, an old friend?" asked Bomi.

"You two really run fast!" said Chorong as she and Naeun finally caught up.

"Wow, you've really grown up Hayoung-ah." said Eunji as a wide smile formed.

The two girls had some history together.

[FLASHBACK]

In the harbor port in the south of Busan, home to a wide ocean and hundreds of fisherman was Jung Eunji's hometown. She was about five years old, wondering about her mom's chicken stall where sounds of the chopping board being constantly hit by the large knife echoed throughout the noisy market. The curious girl always found interest in her mom's skills and loved watching her butcher chicken. She has seen many customers come and go, mostly neighbours or visiting tourists. But today, a family came by the shop and Eunji noticed a small girl hiding behind her mother.

With a smile, Eunji crouched and attempted to make eye contact with the girl. Wearing a cute, pink apron and had chubby cheeks, she was very shy and didn't seem to talk much.

"Hi! What's your name? I'm Jung Eunji! Did your mom come here to buy chicken from my mom?" asked Eunji as the girl's parents were busy browsing through the chicken displayed at her stall.

"Ha....young...." mumbled the girl. It appears that she was still learning how to speak properly.

"You are Hayoung? That's a nice name! You don't look like you live in Busan! Want me to show you around?"

"......" The girl kept silent as she looked at her mom and looked back at her.

"Ah, you need to ask permission from your mother? Alright, don't worry I got this!" laughed Eunji, finding the girl cute.

"Hey aunty, it is okay if I take Hayoung and show her around? We won't go very far, I promise!"

"Sure. I will take some time to buy things and I don't think Hayoung would stay still. You two should go and have fun" smiled the lady in which Eunji gave a thumbs up to Hayoung whose expression became brighter.

"Come on, I'll show you some really cool stuff here!" said Eunji with excitement as she grabbed hold of Hayoung's small, gentle hand. She promised that she will never let go and she will never lose her in her sight.

For about ten minutes, Eunji was very enthusiastic showing the girl various stalls at the market where there were huge seafood displayed while some still alive and trapped in large aquariums, it was certainly a whole new world for the little city girl.

"Big..fish!" said Hayoung as she pointed towards a lobster.

"It isnt a fish, its called a lobster. That one over there is sea urchins and these are big clams. They all taste really good!" said Eunji who showed and taught Hayoung the names of each seafood.

Eunji was rather surprised at how fast Hayoung could memorize the names of all the seafood at just one go. Perhaps, she's a natural-born genius.

The two girls went pretty deep inside the market and had to walk all the way back to the entrance where the chicken stall was. Eunji noticed that Hayoung seemed to have difficulty walking. Surely, a baby could only walk so much. Without hesistation, Eunji stood in front of Hayoung and bent down, allowing the girl to climb onto her back. With her tiny hands clinged over her neck, Eunji laughed and said "Welcome aboard to the Eunji KTX. Our next destination is Mum's Chicken Shop. Please fasten your seatbelts and have a nice journey ahead" With a joke, Eunji stood up and piggybacked Hayoung all the way back. By the time she arrived, Hayoung had already fallen asleep and her head was comfortably tucked within Eunji's shoulder. For some reason, Eunji could only smile.

Eventually, Hayoung and her family left the stall with the child still sleeping but this time, in the arms of her mother. Eunji had hoped of seeing her again, making sure that she doesn't forget her name, Hayoung.

But eventually, the two met again one year later. Her family seemed to visit Busan often and this was a perfect time for Eunji and Hayoung to play together although most of this was very short. But slowly, within those three years, they got to know each other and treated each other like sisters. Eunji was the big sister who warned Hayoung not to go to certain places or touch sharp objects. She also protected her from neighbourhood boys who loved picking on small kids. Hayoung on the other side, was just a cute, innocent girl who was Eunji's source of happiness. The older girl had always found her actions and her never-ending questions adorable. It was to the point where Hayoung would ask questions that even Eunji couldn't answer.

"Where does the coin go? Does it eat it in exchange for the drink?" asked Hayoung out of curiousity as she stared at the vending machine that was half her size.

"Well, maybe it does. Maybe there's a monster living inside and then it goes RAWR!! like that" said Eunji as she randomly made up something and imitated a dinosaur.

"I'm not scared of that." said Hayoung. She was more grown during the past three years and seemed mature.

"Oh~ guess that trick won't work anymore. Usually, you would break down in tears when I did that. Wait, how is it that your head already reaches my shoulder?" said Eunji as she noticed the sudden difference in Hayoung's height growth.

"I'm going to be taller than you unnie! Just you wait!" grinned Hayoung cheekily.

"No way. As your unnie, you will never be able to reach here." said Eunji as she playfully pulled her cheeks.

"I will." pouted Hayoung.

It was at that moment, Hayoung's mother called her over and told her that it was time to leave. As usual, farewells were very hard because the two girls didn't want to leave each other. But they had always believed that they would come back again just like every other year, having fun.

"Time for you to go Hayoung-ah. You shouldn't miss the train." said Eunji as she patted Hayoung's back.

"Unnie, you're heading to middle school next year right?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Wouldn't you be too busy to meet me when I come back?"

"What are you saying? Of course I won't! I'll definitely come running to you and hug you tightly in my arms! See you next year Hayoung-ah!"

"Promise?"

"I promise! Don't worry! Now hurry up otherwise you'll be late!"

"Alright! See you next year unnie!" said Hayoung as she waved goodbye.

But the two girls didn't know that would be the last time they would see each other for another ten years, that was now.

[END OF FLASHBACK]

"You really weren't lying when you said you'd be taller than me." said Eunji as a motherly smile formed. She couldn't help but to look at Hayoung in a lovingly manner like a mother who has seen her child all grown up.

"Sorry Eunji unnie but, please pretend that you did not see me. Please." said Hayoung as she quickly pulled back her hoodie and began to step foot. But she was stopped as Eunji grabbed onto her hands tightly.

"Hey. We just met again after ten years and that's the first thing you say to me?" said Eunji, surprised at the cold reaction she recieved.

"Eunji-ya, who is she?" asked Bomi.

"Remember the girl I used to talk about with you back in middle school, the city girl that came to visit my hometown every year. That girl is her."

"Wow, that's her? She's...really tall." said Bomi as she raised her head up.

"You've never told me about her Eunji unnie." said Naeun who seemed rather jealous of the two having such special connection.

"Erm I think we need to stop talking for awhile, there's a group of guys coming after us behind..." said Chorong as the girls turned around to see the men that gained back their consciousness running after them.

"Wait, why are they coming after us?!" said Eunji in surprise.

"Screw this, can we just use our powers Chorong unnie? Not that people would care right?" said Bomi as she rolled her sleeves up.

"Well, there doesn't seem to be a lot of people out here.....permission accepted."

"Wait, what do you mean powers?" said Hayoung in confusion as she glanced at the girls.

"You'll see and, you better not be running away from me Hayoung-ah." said Eunji as she refused to let go her hand.

"This is going to be fun." said Bomi with a smile as she cracked her knuckes and placed her hands forward, in front of the men who were running towards her. Suddenly, a bright light began to surround Bomi's hands and within a flash, a thunderbolt shot through from her palms towards the men that immediately pulled them onto the floor, collapsed.

"Now, run." said Chorong as the five girls began to move towards an even smaller alleyway around the corner of the street.

"One question, I didn't kill them right?" asked Bomi with a nervous laughter.

"Your powers are still rather weak so it still isn't very harmful. These men will just receive a momentary shock but they will wake up eventually." said Chorong.

"That's a relief." sighed Bomi.

"Everything is okay right? Sorry to pull you into this situation Hayoung-ah but we have to talk." said Eunji as she faced the hooded girl.

"That power just now...." mumbled Hayoung as she stared at Bomi.

"Oh that, um Chorong unnie what do we do about this...would it be okay if-" Before Eunji could say anything, Hayoung took her hand out and pulled a pebble upwards as she looked at Chorong.

"Wow, you have powers too?!" said Bomi in excitement.

"So I was right, you are the chosen one. The Air Fairy." said Chorong as she took a closer look, confirming it.

"Fairy? What do mean? These powers...you have them too?" asked Hayoung.

"All of us do Hayoung-ah. This may sound weird but the reason why we have powers is because we're the chosen ones to be-" Eunji couldn't continue her sentence as she laughed. Saying the word "fairies" felt was still very awkward for her.

"Fairies. All of us are chosen fairies and I need to bring all of you back to heaven to assist me in a battle. I know things are going a little too fast and you may be confused, but I need you to come with us...Hayoung....right?" said Chorong with uncertainity, wondering if she got her name wrong.

"Don't worry unnie, you got it right. She's Oh Hayoung. The grown up baby that I knew." smiled Eunji as Hayoung continued to stay silent for awhile feeling a bit uncomfortable with Eunji's warm comment.

"I'll come along....not that I actually have a place to go to anyways...." said Hayoung quietly as she placed her hands inside the pocket. She still continued to remain distant from everyone else.

"That's great! Now all we have left is to find the last remaining fairy!" smiled Bomi. The girls headed back to the run-down apartment to rest and discuss. But Eunji couldn't help but to worry for Hayoung. Meeting her after 10 years was a wonderful thing but yet, there was something wrong. She wasn't the bright, cheerful kid that she had always knew. Watching Eunji's attention slowly straying towards the girl, Naeun felt a sense of abandonment. She couldn't help but to feel strange when Eunji looked at Hayoung. Perhaps it was due to the fact that Eunji was always by her side and showering her with attention but now, she wasn't.

The girls gathered in a circle on the old, wooden floor of the apartment. It was already night and they were starving, slurping the very last resources of Bomi and Eunji's cup noodles stash that they could scavenge. It was clear that they need more supplies as time was running out. Chorong had urged that they need to find the last fairy soon because the longer it took, the worst it could become. It had been over a week since Chorong arrived on Earth and it was certain that heaven needed her and the fairies back.

"Unnie, let's just rest and find her tommorow. All of us are tired and Hayoung needs some time to adjust." said Eunji as she still held onto the younger girl's hand. Surprisingly, Hayoung didn't let go. For her, it has been a long time since she had felt the warmth of someone, something that only parents would give.

"I understand your sense of urgency but unnie, we are still humans so we need our sleep." said Bomi with a nervous laughter who seemed to notice this tense atmosphere surrounding Naeun.

"You all can go and sleep first then." said Hayoung as she removed her hands from Eunji's, stood up and head towards the entrance.

"Where are you going?" asked Eunji in worry.

"I'm just taking a walk. Need some time to think a little." answered Hayoung coldly as she opened the door and went. This left a quiet atmosphere in the apartment. Bomi who seemed to notice something, quickly grabbed Chorong by her arms and also took her outside.

"Hey-what are you" said Chorong in which Bomi quickly covered , shaking her head to tell the girl not to speak any further.

"Chorong unnie and I are going to the convenience store for awhile. We'll be right back!" said Bomi with a nervous laughter as she dragged Chorong along and left the apartment, leaving the two girls alone.

"What's up with them?" mumbled Eunji to herself as she decided to take the empty cup noodles and throw them into the trash can. While doing all these actions, she noticed that Naeun hasn't spoken a single word since Hayoung appeared. Of course, the girl felt that something was wrong.

"Naeun-ah, you've been quiet this whole while. Is something wrong?" asked Eunji as she sat down, facing directly in front of Naeun who suddenly avoided her eye-contact.

"That...girl..." mumbled Naeun.

"Oh, you mean Hayoungie? What about her?"

"You two seem to be really close...."

"Naeun-ah..." said Eunji who finally realised the problem as she sighed and smiled at the girl who seemed to pout her lips out of jealously. Seeing this action of hers, was really cute.

"Are you jealous?" said Eunji as she crossed her arms, tilted her head slightly and simply gazed into the girl's eyes.

"No I'm not...."

"Aigoo, what am I supposed to do with you?" said Eunji with a laugh as she used her two hands and playfully pinched Naeun's puffy cheeks. She then grabbed it, holding it gently under her palms and brought her head closer to hers.

"Hayoung is Hayoung. You are you. The two of you each have a special place in my heart and it won't change. Just because Hayoung came back into my life doesn't mean I'm going to neglect you. I'll protect you and her, the both of you. Now, don't act like a kid because you're an unnie to Hayoung." smiled Eunji.

"She isn't older than me? She looks so mature...." said Naeun, surprised.

"I knew you would jump to conclusions quickly. She's only sixteen this year so when I'm not around, please take care of her for me Naeun-ah."

"I'll.......try.......unnie..."

"Thank you." said Eunji as she gently fixed Naeun's hair. Looking at her carefully, it has been awhile since she took a moment to fully capture Naeun's face into her heart. She hadn't had time to gaze directly into her eyes and appreciate her as a whole especially since everything has been happening, the two never seemed to have time alone.

~X~

Meanwhile, Bomi dragged Chorong out of the apartment. Her arms were tightly hung around her shoulders and they were in the middle of the streets that shone under the moonlight.

"Why did you suddenly pull me out? Was there something you wanted to ask me in person?" said Chorong in confusion at Bomi's sudden actions.

"I figured something was up so I thought it was best to leave Eunji and Naeun alone."

"What do you mean Bom-ah?"

"Well, the two have some kind of relationship back then and I can see that with Hayoung coming in and all, she's gonna be jealous for sure." smiled Bomi.

"Jealous? What's that?"

Bomi just stared dumbfoundedly at Chorong, wondering if what she heard was a joke. But it just struck her mind that Chorong wasn't from Earth so it was possible that she couldn't understand "human feelings".

"Unnie. I guess you still have to learn a lot of things." laughed Bomi.

"H-Hey, you should at least tell me what's that-Bom-ah" said Chorong as Bomi dragged her along, making the two walk a few miles down, where they reached a convenience store. Bomi didn't even took time to look around, she went straight to the drinks corner, picked out a banana milk and headed straight for the cashier.

"I...want one too Bom-ah..." said Chorong as she hadn't seen such drink before.

"We can share. I don't have enough money for two."

"Share? Like how?"

Bomi just laughed at Chorong, finding it adorable at how lost she was. She poked the straw into the banana milk, took a sip and gave it to Chorong.

"Like this. Drink some, it's good stuff unnie." said Bomi.

"But you drank it..."

"Yeah. What's wrong with that?"

"Isn't it dirty?"

"What? No way unnie, are you saying that I'm dirty?!"

"No...I'm not" said Chorong as she broke into a laughter and decided to drink the same straw that Bomi used. For some reason, the girl's heart thumped faster than usual. She wasn't used to "sharing" and it felt weird, it was almost as if they had an indirect kiss. Thinking of that, made Chorong's face turn red. Bomi who saw this, couldn't stop laughing and teasing her as the two walked back to the apartment while still, sharing the banana milk.

By the time they reached, they noticed something from afar. There was a group of men surrounding someone and there was a lot of ruckus and shouting.

"What's happening?" mumbled Bomi as the two walked closer in a safe distance.

As they moved closer, their view became clearer and it was Hayoung surrounded by the exact same group of men they met outside the internet cafe.

"What are you? Trying to be a knight to protect her?" asked a man who was much taller than Hayoung.

"You're just a sick bastard who's been hunting girls down for your own pleasure." said Hayoung as she spread her arms wide, acting as shield for a high school girl that she had met earlier, Namjoo.

Hayoung felt a sense of relief, exiting the apartment and breathing in the fresh air of the night. She had a lot on her mind, the answer to her powers, Eunji and the other girls that was with her. She didn't feel comfortable being surrounded by so many girls, it just wasn't her thing. She was confused on what she should do, the fact that this was a life-changing moment and perhaps, coming along with them would mean that she won't ever meet her parents again. For her, this was a good thing because she never had a good relationship with her parents. She hated coming home, in fact she never considered that place a home in the beginning. She wondered that maybe this time, she might have a place to call as her "family".

As she was deep into her thoughts, Hayoung heard a loud, high-pitched scream at the alleyway. It sounded familiar and the girl hoped it wasn't what she was thinking, but she was right. Peeking from the wall, it was the same group of men harrassing the same high school girl.

"When will these bastards ever stop?" sighed Hayoung but what made her surprised was that the high school girl is the one she had saved before, Namjoo.

"Oh god. This is going to turn messy." mumbled Hayoung to herself as she quietly walked into the alleyway, prepared to take a fight.

[END OF FLASHBACK]

And this was how, Hayoung ended herself into. She wondered whether she should really kill these men herself, just like the computer games she had always played. After all, she was going to leave this place. It's not like police would hunt her down because she will dissapear from this dark, evil world.

"I don't know what you did last time, but that won't work again." said one of the men as they suddenly took out a gun from their coats.

"H-Hayoung! They have guns!" said Namjoo in surprise.

"You are really unlucky to be messing with us. Leave now and we won't hurt you. All we need is that girl over there." said the man as he pointed the gun directly at Hayoung's forehead.

"Well, let's see about that." said Hayoung with a smirk as she opened her palms, in which the air around her started to turn light.

"T-that power! We have to stop her Bomi-ya!" said Chorong who noticed that something was wrong.

"What? Got it unnie!" said Bomi as the two started to sprint towards Hayoung. But it was too late.

The men that surrounded Hayoung started to float in the air. Each time Hayoung turned her fingers around, their helpless bodies spun once, twice and more. The hooded girl couldn't control her feelings anymore. Just by the thought of her mother and father, brought a lot of hatred into her heart. The vision of being scolded by her parents, a sharp, chilling slap across her face, memories of her childhood that she wanted to bury away forever had finally resurfaced as a form of aggression. As she remembered back the violent computer games she had played, there was no stopping her anymore. The sixteen year old pushed her hands downwards, slamming the men directly onto the hard, concrete road. Soon enough, blood splattered all over and Namjoo who witnessed this cruel act, cried and screamed in shock.

This suddenly caused a tremor in the ground and the pipes underneath started to burst open. Large amounts of water shot upwards and soon, there was a momentary rain that showered the streets.

"Hayoung-ah!" shouted Bomi as she grabbed hold of the girl, who suddenly fell and fainted to the ground.

"The power she used was too strong for her mental state. We need to go now." said Chorong in urgency as Bomi placed Hayoung over her back.

"W-What is happening?!" said Namjoo who was completely confused at what was happening. Tears still falling down her cheeks as she couldn't help but to stare at the now, dead group of men in front of her.

"You're coming along too." said Chorong as she grabbed hold of Namjoo's hand.

"H-Huh? M-Me?!"

"That's right. You're the last one that we're looking for. Come with us, our Water Fairy." said Chorong with a smile.
