Chapter 5

At The End of This Road, You Must Love Me

“Yah, Lee Kikwang!! Lift with your knees!!”

Kikwang sighed in frustration and let the dresser plop back on the floor before he glared at his girlfriend.

“Yaaah!! This is very heavy! Maybe you should HELP me” he replied as he leaned up against the wall.

“Me?? You want me to lift something that heavy??”

Kikwang raised an eyebrow.

“Why is this so heavy anyway?!”

He opened a drawer, his eyes widening.

“YAH!!! You didn’t empty the drawers?!”

Min merely shook her head.

“I didn’t have time” she replied.

Kikwang groaned and slid down the wall. He hugged his knees to his chest.

“I’m going to die here” he mumbled.

Min sighed and looked around her apartment. It was still intact. They had been here for about 3 hours but nothing was even moved except for a few boxes.

“I thought Joon-ssi was going to help?”

Kikwang slowly looked up at her.

“He is, but he was going to rent a truck and then come over.”

Min nodded in understanding.

“Ohhh…okay. Get back to work” she said and lightly kicked him.

Kikwang got back up and sighed.

“I think I need Joon-hyung to help me.”

“Then call him” responded Min, taking a spoonful of her ice cream.

Kikwang opened his mouth slightly but she merely stared at him.

“What?” she asked and swallowed another spoonful.

“I want some.”

“There’s more in the fridge.”

“YAH!!”

She laughed. He was about to respond when a knock interrupted them. Kikwang smiled widely and ran towards the door, almost ripping it open.

“Hyung! You came!” he yelled and quickly moved to the side to let him in.

Joon smiled and then turned to his right.

“Come on” he whispered and reached out to pull someone.

Kikwang raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Joon turned to him.

 “Kikwang-ah, meet my girlfriend, Hyosung-ah.”

Kikwang watched as Joon tugged a girl out from behind the wall and pulled her inside the apartment. The first thing he noticed was that she had purple hair, very pretty purple hair. His eyes roamed down and immediately stopped at her face. She smiled shyly, her eyes extremely bright for some reason. He couldn’t help but admit to himself that she was very pretty, beautiful in fact. She bowed to him and he immediately did the same.

“Hello. I’m Jun Hyosung. Nice to meet you.”

Kikwang smiled at her voice. She has a cheerful voice. He liked that.

“Hello, I’m Lee Kikwang. Nice to meet you too.”

Kikwang found himself pointing to the petite figure in the kitchen.

“That’s Lee Min-young…. my girlfriend.”

Min heard him speak and quickly turned around. She noticed all three were staring at her and then she especially noticed Hyosung.

“Oh, hello. Nice to meet you” she said and bowed to Hyosung, who did the same and introduced herself to Min.

Kikwang watched this interaction and couldn’t help but laugh when Min bowed again in embarrassment at something Hyosung must have said. Just then, Joon nudged him.

“What do you think?” he asked and nodded his head at Hyosung.

“She seems very nice” replied Kikwang.

Joon smiled widely, his pride showing and then noticed the dresser that was oddly placed in the middle of the floor. Kikwang followed his gaze and then sighed.

“Min-ah didn’t remove the things inside the dresser and so its extra heavy now. I can’t move it by myself.”

Joon laughed at him.

“What’s so funny?” asked Kikwang as he scratched his head.

Joon went over to the large dresser and one by one, pulled out all the drawers. He then very easily tipped over the dresser. Kikwang immediately frowned.

“AISH!!” he yelled.

He heard more laughter and looked over at the girls. His eyes immediately went to Hyosung and he noticed she had a very gummy smile. Then he noticed they were laughing at him.

‘Great first impression Kikwang’ the thought to himself.

“Come on Kikwang-ah, let’s get this down to the truck.”

Kikwang took his eyes off of Hyosung and then focused on what Joon had said. In all honesty, he didn’t know what Joon said but just nodded anyway.

As the guys struggled to get the dresser out the door, the girls watched.

“It must be exciting to be moving in with your boyfriend” voiced Hyosung as she suppressed a laugh when she heard Joon curse at the dresser for being so difficult.

Min shyly nodded.

“It seems so sudden but it feels right. What about you Hyosung- unnie? How long have you been with Joon-ssi?”

“One day.”

Min choked on her drink.

“Eh!? One day?”

Hyosung giggled.

“We lived together for 3 years as friends. We only confessed yesterday.”

Min patted her chest to ease the drink down.

“I’m jealous.”

They laughed once more before they continued packing the things in the kitchen. The guys walked back in and continued to move the furniture out of the apartment. The day passed by very quietly and they were all enjoying themselves. It was around 4 pm when they finally had everything packed in boxes or in the truck.

“I’m hungry” voiced Joon as he plopped down on the carpet floor. The rest nodded in agreement.

“I can go get some food” voiced Kikwang as he stood up from the floor.

“But you need to move the stuff to your apartment. The truck is only rented until tonight.” replied Min.

“I could cook something” voiced Hyosung and everyone looked at her.

“Really unnie?!” asked Min, her eyes brightening at the mention of food of a home cooked meal.

“Sure, I would just need to stop by a grocery store.”

“This is great! We could all head over to Kikwang-ah’s apartment and have the meal there. Let’s go!” said Min and the rest followed, grabbing the left over boxes and heading out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Min stared at the vegetables in front of her with a blank expression. She looked over at Hyosung and saw how she was cooking on the stove with so much ease.
“Unnie…”
Hyosung looked over to Min.
“Is something wrong?” she asked as she saw the untouched vegetables.
Min fumbled with her hands, avoiding Hyosung’s eyes.
“I don’t know how to cook” she mumbled.
Hyosung smiled slightly.
“It’s very easy. I’ll teach you.”
Min was about to protest but just then Kikwang walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge.
“Kikwang-ah! Taking a beer to Joon-ssi? I’ll take it to him. Why don’t you help Hyosung-unnie cook?”
Min quickly grabbed the beer Kikwang had pulled out of the fridge and exited the kitchen, leaving them alone. Kikwang turned to look at Hyosung, who gave him a confused look.
“She hates to cook.”
“Oh!” was all she said.
It got quiet. Hyosung tried to avoid looking at him. She had noticed he was pretty good looking but that he also looked very serious.
“Um…I can do this by myself. You don’t have-”
“It’s okay. I’ll help. You need the vegetables cut, right?”
She nodded and watched as he picked up a knife and began to work. She tended to the meat she was cooking. He looked over at her because he had the sudden urge to look at her. She turned her head and he quickly looked away. She walked over to him and looked at the way he was cutting.
“Kikwang-ssi, if you could just cut the carrots a little thinner, it would be perfect.”
“Okay…and call me Kikwang-ah. No need to be formal. We’re all friends now…Hyosung-ah.”
He liked the way her name rolled off his tongue. She smiled.
“Okay Kikwang-ah” she replied.
There was a small pause.
“How long have you known Joon-hyung?”
The sudden question caught them both off guard. Kikwang wanted to smack himself. He had no idea why he was suddenly so curious. Hyosung turned off the stove and quickly emptied the meat into a plate.
“A little over 3 years ago, Kikwang-ah.”
Kikwang nodded and continued to cut the carrots. He liked the way she said his name.
“He always talks about you at work.”
Hyosung laughed.
“Joonie is just a dork. I apologize on his behalf” she replied and they both laughed.
“No, it’s all right.”
There was a small pause and then he spoke again.
“Did Joon-hyung ever mention me?”
He cringed as the question came out. He seriously wanted to smack himself.
“He couldn’t stop talking about you on the way over to Min-ah’s apartment. He told me you were very nice and not to be scared by you.”
He turned and looked at her.
“Scared of me? Why?”
She played with her hands and bit her lip. He couldn’t help but think that she was so cute when she did that. She came closer to him and whispered.
“He said you look like a beastly idol.”
Kikwang felt his ear tingle from her words but the smile that spread over his face was almost hurting his cheeks.
“A beastly idol? I take it as a compliment.”
Hyosung waved her hands around in defense.
“Joonie didn’t mean it in a bad way. He really likes you. He always says nice things. I swear.”
Kikwang laughed and grabbed her hands to stop her crazy movements.
“I understand. No worries.”
 He glanced at their hands and quickly let her hands go. She didn’t seem to notice the action as she walked past him to check the vegetables.
“All done?” she asked and he nodded.
She handed him a plate.
“Let’s go eat.”
~~~~~~~~~~~

Hyosung quickened her steps as she rushed through the crowd of people. She was hoping she wasn’t too late but as she neared the bus stop, she saw her bus leaving. She sighed in defeat. She pulled at her bangs and made her way over to the bench.

“Hyosung-ah?”

She stopped and turned  around and found Kikwang standing off in the distance.

“Oh, Kikwang-ah.”

They walked closer to each other. They hadn’t seen each other since last week.

“Are you heading home?” he asked.

“Yes. I just finished my classes. Are you going home too?”

“Yes, I just came to drop off the old ball and chain.”

He laughed and he could tell she wanted to laugh too but decided not to.

“That wasn’t nice” she said and covered .

He smiled widely and pointed at her.

“Yah, I see you smiling! You want to laugh too.”

She waved her free hand.

“No!” she said and turned away.

Kikwang circled around her.

“Eye smile, eye smile! Your eyes are getting smaller! Stop laughing Hyosung-ah!”

She couldn’t take it anymore and just laughed out loud. He noticed her gummy smile once more. It was too cute.

“See, see!! You are laughing!”

They continued to laugh until they started coughing from laughing too much. When they finally settled down, they noticed that there were people staring at them. Kikwang cleared his throat and looked at Hyosung.

“Umm…so where is Joon-hyung?

“He’s actually out of town today to visit his mother.”

“Oh…well the bus won’t come for a while….do you want to get something to eat…with me?”

Kikwang could feel his ears heat up but he couldn’t understand why. Hyosung smiled. She didn’t know why but she was delighted he asked to eat with her.

“Sure.”

They walked together in silence. Kikwang placed his hands in his pockets and bit his lip. He was suddenly feeling nervous. He quickly shook it off and glanced at Hyosung. She didn’t seem to be bothered by his presence. She suddenly stopped in front of a small food stand. She looked to Kikwang and he walked over, noticing the big spicy rice cakes.

“Do you want one?” he asked her and she nodded.

“Ahjumma, please wrap up a bag of spicy rice cakes” he said and took out his wallet.

“Kikwang-ah, I can pay for-”

“No, I offered to eat in the first place. I should pay” he defended.

Hyosung ignored him and took out her wallet anyway.

“Yah! I said I would pay.”

Kikwang quickly grabbed the rice cakes from the elderly woman and tried to pay her but Hyosung pulled his hand back.

“Here you go, ahjumma” she said and handed over the money.

The elderly woman laughed as she watched them bicker. She ignored Hyosung’s money and took Kikwang’s money instead.

“Aigoo, you have such a nice boyfriend. Let him pay this once.”

They both waved their hands in protest.

“We’re not together” they said in unison but the ahjumma ignored them.

They walked away from the stand and Kikwang handed a rice cake over to Hyosung. She took it gratefully. They both bit into their food and suddenly stopped and looked at each other. They continued to look at each other as they took another bite from their rice cakes. They stopped and pointed to each other in excitement.

“You eat like a rabbit!” they both said.

They laughed.

“We have things in common” Hyosung said as she chewed.

“Yeah, you also talk with your mouth full” replied Kikwang, quickly dodging her hand as she tried to push him.

They made their way back to the bus stop, chatting away and finding they had many things in common. They both ate like rabbits and talked with their mouth full. They also were the same age but he was a couple months older. They also liked to dance in their free time. As they stopped at the bus stop, they noticed the bus was pulling up to the curb. Hyosung turned to Kikwang.

“That’s my bus.”

Kikwang nodded.

“Today was nice” he suddenly voiced.

“Yeah, it was. Say hello to Min-ah for me.”

Kikwang almost frowned. He had completely forgotten about Min.

“Yeah I will.”

Hyosung climbed into the bus, turning around to wave at him.

“See you around Kikwang-ah.”

Kikwang slowly waved and watched as the bus pulled away. He continued to watch it until he could no longer see it in the traffic. He smiled widely as he remembered her smile. He sighed and stuffed his hands in his pocket and sat down at the bench to wait for his bus, all the while, thinking about how Joon was so lucky to have someone like Hyosung.
