What is that noise?
Tiffany moaned and prone, but the loud ringing noise could still be heard. She tried to ignore the noise, but her serenity was disturbed. With eyes closed she palpated on the table beside her bed and dropped a ringing alarm clock on the table to floor. The batteries fell out and peace had returned to Tiffany’s morning.
For God sake, what is that noise again?
Tiffany covered her face with a pillow hoping the noise would stop. But it’s useless. The noise went through her pillow. She tossed the pillow aside and again palpated the table. She then took her ringing iPhone and put it to her ear, half asleep.
Tiffany clicked, then said hoarsely. “Ha…looo. Please call me back lat….”
“Youngie, are you still asleep?” her father’s soft voice echoed.
“Pa…pa?” Tiffany was still stuck in the dream realm. “Why are you calling this early? I already told you I don’t want to be bothered on Sunday.”
“Oh, Papa already knew about your bad habit. You always declare Sunday is your lazy day and you won’t get up before lunch, but I need you to get up just this once,” her father explained. “I have an important promise at eleven and I got a flat tire. Can you pick me up, Youngie?”
“Hmmm. Let me guess. Client, isn’t it?” Tiffany rubbed her eyes. What time? What time is her father’s promise? Eleven? Didn’t she promise Rudy to meet him at ten?
Tiffany picked up the alarm clock she dropped to the floor earlier. It’s dead. “Papa! What time is it? Now? What time?”
“No need to panic, Youngie. I still have time,” her father said calmly, mistaking the reason behind her daughter’s frantic behavior. “It’s…half past ten.”
“Crap! I’m late – Awww!” Tiffany’s head hit the drawer successfully.
“Halo? Are you okay, Youngie? Late for what? And watch your language, little girl.”
“Papa, I promise to meet someone at ten,” Tiffany said as she caressed her head. Her sleepiness was gone. “Papa…just grab a cab, can’t you?”
She knew her father wasn’t a fan of public transportation. He didn’t even want to take an airplane except for a really important occasion. Her father said he didn’t want to give his life to someone he didn’t know. And Tiffany always thought her father was too paranoid.
“Where do you want to go?” her father asked.
Tiffany mentioned her meeting point.
“It’s okay. I can move my meeting there. Can you pick me up fast? And don’t try to make me take a cab again, will you?”
Changwook glanced at his watch then looked outside the window, observing people who passed by. He sat beside a window so he could see the road clearly.
That girl was already half an hour late. He should’ve asked for Tiffany’s number yesterday. Maybe that girl had an unexpected situation and forgot her promise to meet him. If that’s so, he waited here for nothing.
Changwook decided to wait a little bit more. If Tiffany didn’t show up in ten minutes, he would cancel all his plans.
This was really the first time he’s in South Korea. Changwook never even once put his feet on the Ginseng Country. The totally different place from his childhood’s place, North Korea albeit the land. Changwook could leave the North only after her mother passed away and told him the secret.
He left North Korea when he was sevent
