Changwook woke up feeling much better this morning. It’s over! The nightmare that haunted him all those years finally ended. All the burdens he carried on his back were gone. He wondered, why couldn’t he face his own father sooner?
He knew he couldn’t see his father because he’s afraid, afraid of his own feelings. He’s too scared that his rage would engulf him inside out. After all, he grew up hating his father. But, it turned out his rage was dissipated when he saw Soojung and looked at his father’s heartfelt regret. Now he’s just relieved that they started to get to know all over again. Maybe this was what his mother always wanted.
Seoul scenery from his balcony looked so much more beautiful now. The cold breeze didn’t bother him at all. Changwook took a very deep breath, as he wanted to get rid of the remains of his problems. And somehow the first thing that popped in his mind was one person, his vitamin. Stephanie Hwang.
He took his phone and dialed a number. He did it with a smile on his face. And his smile widened when he heard a squealed voice across.
“Stephanie, you have time? Lunch with friends?...Then we don’t have to have lunch together, I won’t be long anyway…I just want to see you, can’t I?...Hmmm yeah, it has to be today…Great, I’ll see you soon,” Changwook cut off the call.
“WHOAAAHHHHHHH!!!!” Changwook shouted loudly. Some people looked above, some of them yelled him crazy, some told him not to jump. He just didn’t care. His morning had never been this good.
“Your father? Your birth father?” Tiffany’s eyes popped. She asked once again just to make sure. “So, you’re not just meeting your sister but your father as well?”
“Mm-hmm,” Changwook answered casually.
The two of them sat on the bench at Dosan Park, in front of nearly leafless trees. Changwook told Tiffany about his encounter with his father and sister.
Tiffany was still in a daze. “Then what do you feel? I mean, you told me that you hated your father,” she asked carefully.
Changwook smiled. “I don’t know. I’m glad it’s finished. All of it.”
“Your father, I mean you forgave him already?”
Changwook shrugged. “I think I’m trying to make peace with myself more than with him. I got a feeling that my mother also wanted this to happen. The point is, we’re trying to be a family again now. We’re not close enough to be a family, but we’re learning day by day.”
Tiffany muted. She didn’t know what to say. Moreover she thought Changwook was only wanted to be heard, not less. Suddenly, her shoulder became heavy. She turned her head only to see Changwook’s head already leaning on her shoulder. She was taken aback and her face heated instantly.
“Rudy, what are you doing?” she asked nervously.
“Just a moment,” Changwook mumbled, without lifting his head. “Let me stay like this just for a moment. I’m so exhausted.”
Tiffany froze. She literally stopped moving. She couldn’t hear anything but her own racing heartbeat.
“I just found out why my mother always told me not to hate my father,” Changwook sighed. “No matter what, my father only wanted to provide the best life for two of his children. By any means,”
A few seconds later Changwook lifted his head and looked at Tiffany smiling. “I’m really relieved because my problems are gone now,” he said. “How about if we held a little bit celebrating tonight?”
“Celebrating? Fine, under one condition,” Tiffany pointed her finger. “I get to choose the restaurant.”
“Okay, okay. We’ll go to Yeondoo Ahjumma’s BBQ Stall,” Changwook faultlessly guessed Tiffany’s mind.
“What makes you think I want to go there? I can choose someplace new, you know,” Tiffany whined.
“Even if you choose some restaurant at the end of the world, I promise you we’ll go there, Stephanie Hwang,” Changwook smirked. He got up then touched Tiffany on the head. “You better get going. You said you have lunch with your friends, right?”
Tiffany didn’t answer. She was just dumbfounded. Was she crazy or for a second when Changwook touched her head, she couldn’t feel her heart beating.
Changwook was opening email from the clients on his desk when Siwon came to the room and stood in front of him.
“There you are,” Siwon said.
“Ah, Hyung. What’s up?” Changwook asked without diverting his gaze from the computer.
“I got something to ask
