CHAPTER 6

We drive under the unforgiving snow in the cold December night. His hand is intertwined with mine and I feel warm and fuzzy from his touch. I stare out the window and see the giant, evergreen trees flashing by as if the moment was already gone, slipping away. We stop at the shoulders of the road and he takes my hands so I can get out of the car. We’re minutes away from Evergreen. We run and run through the bushes and ferns until we find the lake. It’s frozen but damn, it looks beautiful. The glow from the moon glistens on the icy sheets of the lake and the snow ricochets off of it. He takes out his polaroid camera and tells me to walk a couple of feet in front of him. He tells me to stop when I get right on the edge of the lake. I hear a distant click and I turn around just as he takes the picture. I’m smiling at the camera with my messy, braided hair. 

“You look so beautiful.” He tells me as he caresses my face with an index finger.

“Not as beautiful as you.” I smile up at him and crinkle my nose when he kisses it. 

His expression turns serious as he looks down at me, “Can I ask you something?”

I nod.

“Have you thought about what’s going to happen after we graduate next year?”

“I’m scared of the future, I’ll admit.”

“Do you really want to go to Harvard, or college for that matter?”

“What do you mean?”

“Sometimes, I think you just say it to please your parents.”
