Truly Happy

I See You

April 3rd 2019

I groaned softly as a weight pressed against my back. It swayed for a moment before stilling, tiny fingers digging into my skin to steady itself. The bed creaked as another weight was added and I huffed as it crawled on top of me too, making me sink further into the bounciness of the mattress. The two jiggled madly, and I continued to emit strangled moans as my face was squished further into my fluffy pillow, nose curving at an odd angle.

Eventually, my back began to ache and I craned my neck to see two chubby faces, gap-toothed grins stretching from ear to ear. Sparkling crescent eyes met mine and suddenly, there was harmonious laughter and four pudgy hands grabbing softly at my hair. I chuckled and twisted around, my own hands shooting out cheekily to lightly pinch at the two.

They were easily distinguishable, despite being twins. Youngsoo had light hazel eyes, with speckles of green quite like my own. His hair was a chocolatey brown and his skin fair, smooth and delicate like porcelain. Undoubtedly, he was the loudest member of the family, with plump pink lips that were more often than not parted widely, letting out excited screeches and clustered sentences. Youngjae’s eyes were much darker, like mysteriously beautiful black holes that one could fall into, and his hair was black and thick to match. He had been the first to grow such luscious locks and it didn’t seem as though the speed of their growth would slow down any time soon. That was completely fine though, because even at such a young age, it was easy to see that he would grow to be handsome, no matter what hairstyle he wore.

I could differentiate the twins by looking at them, but Chanyeol, as he had done with me so many years ago, relied on their contradictory scents to pick them apart. He explained that Youngsoo smelled vaguely of cherry blossoms, whereas Youngjae always carried the scent of baby powder with him, and could detect each boy’s presence the moment they waddled through the door.

It was Chanyeol’s turn to shuffle into the room though, rubbing his eyes and yawning boisterously. He grinned at the sound of the three of us, jokingly brawling with one another, my slender fingers playfully poking here and there, tickling delicate bodies. With a monstrous roar, he stomped forward, hands outstretched and fingers creepily twitching to form fake claws. The boys squealed and flopped off me, rolling around the bed frantically, though still continuing to giggle genuinely. They wiggled their toes and poorly attempted to evade Chanyeol as he slowly pounced at them, face contorted and eyes squinted. However, they never left the bed, because they knew it was easier for their daddy to find them if they didn’t move too much. Already, it was plain to see that they were considerate little boys, letting Chanyeol catch them in his lanky arms and draw them in, opening his mouth wide as he pretended to eat them.

Whilst they mucked around, I leapt of the bed and plodded into the kitchen, ready to prepare breakfast. Much to my satisfaction, it seemed as though someone had already had the same idea. The counter was covered in countless plates and bowls, all stockpiled, full to the brim with delicious hand cooked dishes. There were traditional Korean dishes that Chanyeol had learnt from his mother, and many other foods influenced by varied cultures. On one plate, there were even the simplistic slices of toast, the breakfast I usually thrived on.

I smiled as I heard the light pit-patting of bare feet on the floorboards and snorted as Youngjae slid over, gliding until he collided with my leg. He gripped my pyjama pants and tugged himself up onto unsteady legs, before dashing closer to the counter and desperately reaching up, waiting for the food to magically drop into his welcoming arms. Youngsoo followed close behind, jolting into the kitchen beside Chanyeol, who took one step for every three small steps his son made. They were hand in hand and Youngsoo was eagerly tugging him towards the aromatic scents wafting around, a subtle strand of dribble appearing on his chin as his eyes fell upon a jumble of tropical fruits. He only let go of Chanyeol’s hand to run over to Youngjae and attempt to scramble on top of him, trying to gain access.

I grabbed one boy and Chanyeol grabbed the other, both of us lifting them into the stools by the counter and shoving the dishes towards them. They looked to us for permission before they delved in, food mushing all over their faces almost immediately. Once upon a time, I would have found such a sight repulsive, but in that moment, there was nothing more adorable than seeing the twins covered in maple syrup. Chanyeol could obviously hear how speedily they were eating, because he burst into a fit of hysterical chuckling, a sound that matched my own joyous laughter.

They finished quickly and sprung from their seats to make a dash for their newest toys, leaving Chanyeol and I in the kitchen, more leisurely nibbling at the delicious dishes. Chanyeol’s arm s tenderly around my waist and I leaned into him, smirking as he cocked his head to press an affectionate kiss to my forehead. He smelled of a mixture of the foods before us, and yet he still possessed that unique scent I had grown so accustomed to, the scent that made my heart flutter and body relax. I slouched against the outline of his body and inhaled, feeling the happiest I had ever been.

Jimin tore off a piece of her cotton candy and passed it to Youngjae, who accepted with a massive grin and enthusiastic nod of his head. Before he placed it on his tongue, he ripped it in half and handed a piece to Youngsoo, earning a warm, tiny hug of appreciation. Jongdae was on the floor, lying on his side with his head propped up in his palm, and so was Chanyeol, who was comfortably sitting cross-legged. Jimin and I sat on a rickety bench with the boys in between us, their stumpy legs dangling off the edge.

In the foreground was the theme park I had visited with Chanyeol on our first date, rollercoasters zooming down at ridiculous speeds, crowds of vibrant candy and screams of the fearless. The boys were too young to ride anything exhilarating, but were truly thrilled by the minimalism of teacup rides and side games in stalls, because spinning was new to them and there were a lot of humungous toys on offer. With Chanyeol being incapable of playing throwing games safely, I was in charge of winning them some treats and with absolutely terrible aim, I failed in obtaining anything. Luckily, Jongdae stepped in, and despite Jimin’s whines, he gifted all of his prizes to the twins.

They were cuddling with one of the won teddy bears as they sat on the bench, their sticky fingers gluing to the fur and dirtying its pure face, oblivious to their surroundings. I too, was focussed on something, my mind occupied. Chanyeol was so handsome sitting there, the sun bouncing off his tussled black hair, skin radiant and clear. The rays made his eyes shimmer enchantingly, pupils wavering and irises swimming with clear thoughts. I placed my elbows on my knees and leant forward, pressing my forehead to his and smiling as he wriggled his head, our noses nuzzling together.

‘I don’t want to break up all of that disgusting cute stuff you’re doing, but there’s something you should see Min’, Jimin says, her tone quivering with hints of laughter.

I peered up and virtually choked on my own spit. There, a few yards away, was my ex-boyfriend. His appearance was dishevelled, hair a mess, eyes circled by dark grey rings and clothes looking like they had been yanked off a homeless person. He walked with hunched shoulders and weights around his legs; five rambling children tugged at his pants and clawed at him as though trying to climb onto his shoulders, all fighting for the position. Apparently he had slept around much more than I had originally thought.

He caught my eye and I felt an immediate sense of pride surge through my body, pride in myself for getting my life on track and pride in my family, my beautiful, seamless family.

‘Is something wrong?’ Chanyeol questioned, a soothing hand on my leg.

I shook my head and reached out to rake my fingers through his silky strands. ‘No, everything is perfect.’

And really, it was.

The End.

Yes, this is the final chapter of I See You.
I have really enjoyed writing it, because sweet, blind Chanyeol does things to my heart. And thank you for reading up till here!
I may upload bonuses, little peaks into the past/present/future of Min's time with Chanyeol, so keep an eye out for those!

Lots and lots of love
