Chapter 12: UKiss-Dongho

The Good The Bad and the Ignorant

I'm Shin Dongho. I'm 16 years old and to cut a long story short, I'm a member of a somewhat new boy band named UKiss. Up until today, I was the maknae. I debuted with the group pretty young, at the age of 14, so when the company announced to us that they would add another member to the group, I expected him to be older. I didn't really care who it would be, as long as they weren't too troublesome and we didn't have to share a room. It was already bad enough that we had to change the choreography for our comeback song 'Man man hani' last minute. It wasn't really the company's fault. About a month ago, Xander-hyung brought this weird kid with us who apparently was very good at dancing and after the choreographer-hyung saw his moves, he decided to change a few parts here and there. And then they tell us there will be a new member joining, just like that. And of course it was a surprise to all of us when we found out that Alex, now Ed, was the new member. Judging by the look on his face, he himself didn't probably know.

It was Soohyun-hyungs' idea to dump him with me, which was rather a bother because I'd prefer to have the room to myself, but since he's my hyung I decided to listen to him for once, just so the new kid doesn't think he can speak to his hyungs rudely. After we had a little chat with him, everyone went back to their rooms and I was left alone with him in awkward silence. I looked around the room and saw the spare bed laid and Ed sitting on it looking at me.

"So...", I said trying to start a conversation, even though I'm not good at talking, I'm more of a listener. "Where's your stuff?", I asked realizing he had nothing but a ,quite dirty, backpack with him.

"In'ere", he said pointing to the backpack.

"Right...well, get ready then."

"For what?"

"To go to bed...?"

"Ok"

"Yeah.."

"What?"

"You're not moving"

"I know. You get ready first." Ok...what? I get it, he might sleep in his underwear, like me, but we're still both guys. What's the big deal? I walked over to my drawer and opened it but, to my surprise, my stuff wasn't in there. Instead there were new packets of underwear, T-shirts, pyjamas, and other items of clothing that were definitely too small for me. I opened the second drawer and found all my stuff squeezed neatly in there. They could have just bought a second drawer.

"Seems like the first drawer's yours' now...oh", I said turning around and seeing that Ed had fallen asleep. He was still wearing his normal clothes and he hadn't even bothered to cover himself with the duvet. I decided to let him sleep and not bother him so I quietly changed, had a shower and went to bed.

~The Next Day~

"Dongho~, Dongho~, Dongho! Wake up, lazybones!" I woke up and peeped up at Kibum-hyung, but decided to ignore him and turned the other side.

"Ya! How dare you ignore me! Get up and get the kid up too. Aish, what will I do with this kid?!", he said walking out of the room. I stayed in bed a little longer. I looked at the clock on the wall. 5:30am. Honestly, a kid my age should be getting his sleep, not waking up this early. I got up sulking and looked over at Ed. Great, now I had to wake him up, too. I walked over to the little human bundle and tugged at his T-shirt. I saw his eyes opening slowly but steadily and decided my job there was done, so I walked over to my drawer and took my towel out ready to go to the bathroom. Behind me, I could hear rustling and decided to glance at Ed one last time before going, just in case he needed something. I turned around and saw him staring at me with a scared look on his face. At first I thought he was just nervous about the new environment but then I noticed a puddle between his legs which he was trying to cover with a cushion.

"Ya!", I said shocked. I wasn't sure what to say, but honestly, wetting the bed at his age? Didn't he say he was eleven? Gosh, poor thing must have been scared ****-less!

"Hey, what's going on in here? You're not arguing, are you?", Kevin-hyung came in worried and looked at both of us. It didn't take him long to notice Eds' little 'accident'.

"Oh?! What happened? You didn't make it to the toilet in time?" Ed didn't say a thing. Instead, he got up and waked over to my drawer, took a belt out and handed it to Kevin-hyung.

"I'm sorry I pissed on the bed", he said in English holding the belt out to hyung.

"Hold on, I won't... I'm not gonna hit you!", hyung said looking slightly taken aback and lost. "It's ok, It was an accident, after all. Go take a shower and we'll change the sheets, all right? And put the belt back, we won't need it. Ever", I didn't quite get what they were saying, but I saw Ed walking back to the drawers, putting the belt back and walking out the room with a towel. As he was leaving, Eli-hyung came into the room to check everything was okay. He looked at Eds' trousers puzzled and then at his bed.

"Oh my God, did he wet himself?!", he asked shocked.

"Seems so.", I said skeptical. Kevin-hyung glanced at him worried for a second, but then returned to his chirpy self again and started taking the soiled sheets off the bed.

"Eli, can you go get some clean sheets? I think they're in your room."

"Okay", Eli-hyung said looking troubled for a minute but then turned around and left.

"Dongho-ah, go get ready. Don't worry I'll clean the mess up here."

"Hyung?"

"Umhm?"

"Do we tell the rest of the members about this?" Kevin-hyung stopped what he was doing and looked at me.

"I don't think it's necessary, Dongho. It's his first night here. It's only natural if he's scared. He's so young as well." I nodded and went to the bathroom.

We went on with our schedule normally and neither Kevin or Eli-hyung said anything about the morning incident, so I decided to let it go. We had our normal two hour dance practice and then it was time for Ed and me to get ready for school. Even though we're in different schools, the buildings are next to each other, so I could keep an eye on him. I'm so excited to be a hyung at last!

We left the rest of the group to continue drove back to the dorm with manager hyung. I always got jealous of the hyungs when I had to leave them to go to school, but the thought that from now on I wouldn't be alone comforted me, maybe a little too much, too. As I was rushing to get ready, I noticed Ed was just staring at his uniform, not quite sure what to do with it.

"The uniform's to wear, not to look at", I told him buttoning up my shirt.

"Why do we have to wear uniforms?"

"To show which school we're from. You know that."

"Why?"

"Why what?

"Do we have to show it?"

"Don't you have uniforms in Russia?"

"I don't know.I've never been to school."

"Oh..." And that's all I could say. Of course, how stupid of me. We found him on the road, after all. "Here, let me show you how to put it on", I offered after realizing that he still wasn't moving. "Take your clothes off." He did as he was told and I began half showing him half dressing him 'cause he was too slow and we didn't have much time left. As he was getting dressed, I couldn't help but notice the countless cuts and bruises all over his fragile body. His ribcage and hipbones was also sticking out as if they could cut through his skin any minute and veins were visible everywhere. I tried not to stare so he didn't feel any more uncomfortable than he already looked, but I couldn't help but wonder what his story was. Sure, he lived on the streets and it couldn't be all that nice, but still, even with that kind of a lifestyle, those were too many cuts and bruises for a kid. What was more disturbing, however, were the bruises all around his neck and inner thighs that looked more like hickeys. I shuddered at the thought and hoped it was all my imagination.
