I'm Not Gay

No Quick Fix For Consciousness

The sun had risen on another glorious day. Woohyun was warm and well rested even though he had a stiff back and a killer headache. He was hesitant to open his eyes. If only he could sleep forever. He stretched out across his bedroom floor running his fingers over the carpet and into the cool shade under his bed until his fingers brushed against something soft and furry.

Bunny ears.

Woohyun sat up so fast he almost out from the rush of blood leaving his brain. He looked to the space next to him on the floor. If his memory served correct Sunggyu should have been there, where he had passed out last night, but the spot was empty. Woohyun leaned forward taking a deep breath relaxing his shoulders as he rest his hands in his lap wringing out his fingers. Having to see Kim Sunggyu after what happened last night would be terrible. He let out a sigh and a short laugh shaking his head. Maybe it was all a dream.

“Shut up.” A voice came from the bed.

Woohyun snapped his head in the direction of the grumbling voice. His first instinct was to cover himself as he crossed his arms over his chest. Sunggyu was on his bed with no shirt on… pants ed, no socks, no shoes, hair a complete and utter mess. He looked beautiful in the light of the sun. Woohyun hit himself in the head. It was the hangover talking for sure. He to all fours crawling over to the edge of his bed resting his chin on the mattress. His eyes were bigger then saucers.

Sunggyu’s eyes were closed, with one arm above his head and the other across his stomach. He was flat on his back plush lips parted, his soft eyelashes brushing his cheeks. Woohyun watched his chest rise and fall peacefully as a ray of light washed over pale skin.

“God, I need a cigarette.” Sunggyu sat up on his elbows and Woohyun ducked lower to avoid his gaze but the red head didn’t bat a lash, instead he was squeezing them shut. “We really need to get some curtains.” He turned over onto his side facing Woohyun as he pulled the blankets up over his head.

He took in a deep breath and froze coming to the realization that he was not in his own bed. These blankets were definitely as soft and they smelled like Nam Woohyun.

Woohyun stayed still only his eyes were visible at the edge of the bed. Sunggyu slowly pulled the blankets down, his ruffled red hair popping out first then a pair of narrow eyes that instantly spotted the fluffy brunet peeking up at him. Woohyun flattened himself to the floor avoiding what might happen next. This could be bad, or really bad.

“Nam… I saw you. Why the hell am I in your bed? What did you do to me?!” Sunggyu half yelled the words kicking out of the blankets.

It fell over the side covering Woohyun completely and for a moment, he was thankful for Sunggyu’s early morning attitude. Sunggyu threw his legs over the side of the bed nearly missing Woohyun’s head when he pressed his feet to the floor. In the same instant Woohyun sat up wrapping himself up in the discarded comforter. Sunggyu seeing him in this state might make things much worse.

Woohyun kept avoiding eye contact. He had no clue how to handle this situation.

“Do not tell me you are under there.” Sunggyu slapped a hand over his face.

He honestly couldn’t remember fully what had happened. He could only recall hands and lips and well, other things, but they really didn’t do that. He hoped. He had the urge to rip the blanket off of Woohyun so he could disperse his suspicions. After taking a second to really look at the kid on the floor he almost felt bad. Maybe he was the one who did something to Woohyun and not the other way around. He didn’t know if he should apologize or not.

Hell no.

He totally liked it right? Sunggyu shifted his eyes towards the ceiling sighing as he ran a hand through his hair.

“Say something will you?” He was almost yelling again but then brought it down a decibel when his head started to pound from his own volume.

What time was it? He looked at his wrist but he wasn’t wearing a watch.

“I’m not gay!” Woohyun bit his lip tightening the blankets around his shoulders like some sort of defense mechanism.

Sunggyu could only laugh. Woohyun was confused. Did he not believe him? He had never done that with a guy before and he was sure it would never happen again. Woohyun stared at Sunggyu strangely trying to figure out what kind of laugh that really was.

“Hey, I’m not gay either. Don’t look at me like that.” Sunggyu’s cheeks were dusted pink more out of embarrassment then anything else. He likes chicks with s and stuff. “Stop staring at me loser.” He turned back to those dark puppy dog eyes, glaring trying to read what was going on in Woohyun’s mind.

Then Woohyun laughed.

“.” He broke the stare laughing so hard he started snorting.

Sunggyu thought maybe the kid had lost his mind but then another memory came running back to him. Nam Woohyun had called him a .

“Don’t you dare tell anyone what happened last night. I will kill you, bastard.” In an instant he tackled Woohyun to the ground pinning his arms down at his sides as he hovered inches from his face and those fat lips.

It was too much and Woohyun had to turn away, his face going a deep shade of red. Sunggyu only came to the realization of the position they were in after he felt Woohyun’s knee press up against his groin.

“Get off of me.” Woohyun rolled his head back, bangs falling into his eyes as he looked over Sunggyu’s face. He was lost for a split second in those sharp features and the warmth of his attackers breath on his lips. “Please.” He breathed out pulling his wrists from Sunggyu’s loosened grasp.

Sunggyu sat up but didn’t remove himself from Woohyun’s lap. This was a lot to take in. Woohyun sat himself up as well, not even trying to push Sunggyu off his legs. The blanket had fallen down exposing his chest and he was very well aware of his own half- body. He tugged at the blanket being held hostage under the red heads body weight. Meanwhile Sunggyu was focused on how the sun made the kid’s hair glow a deep golden brown catching each facet as he shifted ever so slightly under him. The urge to touch his hair was growing, but he fought the feeling.

Their eyes met again and Sunggyu was up in a flash reaching a hand out to Woohyun offering to help him off the ground. Woohyun took the offer and pulled himself to a standing position. It was good to be up off the ground.

“Why did you stay on the floor?” Sunggyu walked away picking up his shirt that was abandoned in the far corner of the room.

“Why did you think you were allowed in my bed?” Woohyun sat down on the edge of the bed eyeing Sunggyu who was in the middle of dressing himself. He couldn’t help but look at the ground when Sunggyu reached for the zipper on his jeans.

Sunggyu noticed Woohyun’s innocent reaction and smirked, an evil thought passed through his head. As Woohyun was still looking down, he walked to stand right in front of him. Woohyun only looked up when he saw two bare feet close to his own. He swallowed hard, well, because Sunggyu’s crotch was almost eyelevel with his face.

“My zipper is stuck. Fix it.” Sunggyu looked down at Woohyun who was beyond shocked at the absurd request.

Sunggyu raised his shirt up exposing his stomach and his undone fly inching closer to Woohyun. He couldn’t help but run his tongue over his lips as he watched Woohyun hesitate for a moment, nervous hands almost making their way up to his thighs. Sunggyu sighed backing away with a smirk patting Woohyun on the head.

“Wow, were you actually going to do it? You’re really dumb for being smart.” Sunggyu laughed and zipped himself up searching the room for the rest of his belongings.

“You can leave now.” Woohyun was annoyed. So what if he was going to help. Friends do that stuff for each other right?

Without even thinking about it he stood up letting the comforter fall to the floor. He walked over to his door opening it in order to shove Sunggyu out. What he didn’t know was Sungyeol and Dongwoo were both outside, just simply passing by. As he opened the door they stopped to say hi, but were instantly distracted by the ruffled shorts Woohyun was still in from the night before.

Sunggyu turned around when he heard hilarious cackling coming from the hallway. He first eyed the two in the doorway then Woohyun, and he burst laughing to the point of tears.

“Nice legs.” He pointed at Woohyun’s lower half.

Woohyun had enough at that point stomping over to Sunggyu shoving him out the door and into the two idiots who were soon to be his ex-friends. The red head dropped one of his boots on the way out and Woohyun didn’t hesitate to pick it up chucking it at Sunggyu before slamming the door in his face.

“I’m going to make sure you fail the entire course!” Woohyun shouted before throwing himself onto his bed burying his face in his pillows.

He could hear the three of them laugh all the way down the stairs. He would deal with his friends later when the embarrassment died and he felt like showing his face to the world. He pressed his face further into the pillow yelling a few ‘I hate yous’ before calming enough to notice the scent that was filling his nose, Sunggyu. It was like warm vanilla ocean mist if that is what you could call it; a hot summer day when the breeze was so warm grazing over hills full of fresh flowers,  it would wrap you up tight even in the cool shade filling your nose with the sweetest scent.

Woohyun flipped the pillow over and rolled to the other side of the bed. Reminiscing about a person’s specific smell was not what he needed to be doing right now. What he needed was to put on normal clothing. He slipped his fingers under the hem of the ill-fitting ruffled short shorts pulling the band back and letting it go snapping against his stomach. He cringed. How do girls really deal with this stuff?

When Woohyun was ready to face the world again he snuck down the stairs peering through the spindles of the wooden railing. The whole place was quiet except for a few of the new pledges who were busying themselves sweeping up the mess from last nights party. He made his way through the sea of red solo cups and empty beer bottles to the kitchen where he found Sungyeol and Dongwoo much more docile then they had been earlier that morning.

“Hey.” Woohyun sat down taking a fork to the stack of pancakes that were placed in front of him.

“So you made it out alive.” Sungyeol smiled at Woohyun with his mouth full, blueberries stuck to his front teeth. Gross.

“Yep.” Woohyun looked closely at his tall friend who had what looked like bite marks covering his upper arms and legs, as far as he could see from what was sticking out of the shorts and tank Sungyeol was wearing.

Woohyun decided not to ask. The vibe in the room was very don’t ask don’t tell, and he sure didn’t want to do any explaining of his own. He kept his mouth shut. They ate in silence.

After the pledges had left and the furniture was pushed back into place the three of them settled into the couch watching reruns of some old cartoons, Dongwoo laughed a little too hard making everyone groan and grab their heads. Woohyun decided he would never drink again.

Sunggyu had taken the bus home that day. It was funny how things could change so quickly much like the weather. When he had woken up the sun was out in full force but by the time he made it to the bus it was raining again. It rained all the time. Sunggyu didn’t think he really slept at all last night. So when Woohyun peeked his little nose over the side of the bed he had seen him but didn’t move for fear of what would happen next. He began to base his actions on Woohyun’s reactions.

If the kid had wanted to pretend like it never happened then he would have gone right along for the rest of his life imagining it all to be a dream. Seeing Woohyun acting meek and shy made Sunggyu want to pull the inner child out of the book nerd. He wanted to take Woohyun by the hand and show him his favorite things. Share his world with him. He told himself it wasn’t anything like love. It was like finding your best friend. Someone who understood you completely without a word. They didn’t need words. They had glances, the brush of a hand, lips. Sunggyu brought his fingers up to his mouth grazing over his own lips gingerly biting back the sensation as he sat in his seat.

He watched the drops of water roll down the window as the bus sped through the city, feeling like he was headed in the wrong direction but he had gone this way so many times before. Pressing his palms to his closed eyes, he pushed until he saw stars. Nam Woohyun, the name was in the back of his mind and on the tip of his tongue. It was anything but a dream. When he finally had made it home he was wet and cold and nothing looked better then the messy comforter of his unmade bed. He was alone wishing he were not. He needed a body, a distraction.

Myungsoo came and went as he pleased but having just his presence in the apartment would have put Sunggyu at ease. The thing was when he was left alone he thought too much, usually sending him into a downward spiral of despair. Sunggyu crawled into bed kicking off his shoes and pulled the blankets to his chin after digging his phone out of his pocket. He was about to send a text to Myungsoo his finger hovered over Woohyun’s name for a moment before he finally skipped over to message to his roommate.

He waited as long as he could for a response before he fell asleep with the sound of rain falling on the roof.

A few days had passed. Woohyun and Sunggyu had yet to contact each other.  Soon that same feeling came nagging at the back of their minds and the inevitable was bound to happen. Woohyun had to see Sunggyu and Sunggyu had to see Woohyun. Texting as well as calling was out of the question. That wasn’t how they did things. Everything was left up to fate and fate always seemed to bring them together.

So when Woohyun was pacing in his bedroom and Dongwoo just so happened to walk by. That was fate. Dongwoo stopped for a moment watching Woohyun sigh and hang his head holding his notebook to his chest. It had been a long time since he had seen the perseverant Nam Woohyun pacing obviously having some sort of internal conflict. Also the fact that Woohyun had bunny ears on his head made things a tad bit disturbing.

“Hey,” Dongwoo leaned in the doorway resting his shoulder against the frame. “What’s up, writers block?”

Woohyun came to a standstill in the center of the room meeting his friend’s concerned gaze.

“Huh? Oh,” He relaxed a bit letting his arms hang at his sides tucking his finger between the pages so as not to lose his spot. “No I was just thinking.”

“About what?” Dongwoo walked into Woohyun’s room and pulled out the chair from his desk taking a seat.

“Things.” Woohyun eyed the ground squishing his toes into the carpet. “Okay, well can I ask you something?” Woohyun tossed his notebook on his desk and sat on the edge of his bed looking up to Dongwoo.

“You know you can ask me anything. Dude, you’re like a brother to me.”

“I’m not gay.”

“Okay.” The corner of Dongwoo’s mouth turned up already expecting what was coming next. “But?”

“I might have kissed a guy!” Woohyun picked up his pillow and held it to his face still mumbling.

Dongwoo laughed that laugh… the one that echoes through the whole house and wakes up the rest of your roommates. In no time, Woohyun was up on his feet slapping a hand over his best friends mouth but by then it was too late. He heard the footsteps.

“What the hell is going on in here? You guys know that I was up until four am writing that paper. I literally just fell asleep!” Sungyeol was more then peeved but when he saw Woohyun attacking Dongwoo he knew something was up. A grin spread across his face, knowing Dongwoo couldn’t tell a lie. “Dongwoo what did Woohyun just tell you?”

“Nothing.” Woohyun said as he gave Dongwoo a warning glance. Dongwoo nodded and Woohyun pulled his hand away.

“He kissed a guy!” Dongwoo ran out the door before Woohyun could stop him and Sungyeol just laughed and shook his head.

It was certainly less of a reaction then he had expected. When Woohyun’s eyes met Sungyeol’s there was something there behind them, acceptance. He could never do wrong by his friends. Sungyeol shrugged and left him in his room. And suddenly a weight had been lifted.

“How long has it been?” Myungsoo was leaning over the counter playing with the salt and pepper shakers.

“How long has what been?” Sunggyu had his sleeves rolled up as he wiped down the counters at the diner.

It was a cold and windy night. Daylight had become shorter and shorter, and looking out the window it seemed much later then it really was. His night had suddenly become longer.

“Since you know…” Myungsoo chuckled as he clanked the two shakers together in a suggestive motion, spilling them all over the counter.

“Long.” Sunggyu sighed rolling his eyes as he cleaned up the mess his dumb roommate was making.

“Hey if you want I could always-“ Before Myungsoo could finish the door opened with a jingle and three guys walked in.

Even though it was late Woohyun had run into Dongwoo and Sungyeol on their way back to the frat from a bar. Woohyun had just finished his DJ gig and the guys wanted food. He had no clue they would drag him here. He was praying to the dear lord baby Jesus that Sunggyu was not working but his prayers went unanswered.

Dongwoo and Sungyeol entered first, arms slung over each others shoulders in a sloppy mess. Woohyun walked in behind them, head down avoiding eye contact with the red head but also pretending he didn’t know the two idiots.

Myungsoo’s grin turned into a scowl when he saw who had entered the building. He was in the middle of something important. He left his position of leaning over the counter when Sunggyu suddenly backed away dropping the towel into the sink with a wet thud. Myungsoo gave up for the moment.

Sunggyu only saw Woohyun’s two roommates at first and automatically assumed that Woohyun was with them. The excitement rushed through his veins, but when he felt his face flush he realized he needed to calm down a bit. He coughed to clear his throat awkwardly gaining Dongwoo and Sungyeol’s attention.

“Hey!” They both shouted in unison taking a seat on the stools on either side of Myungsoo.

Myungsoo recoiled looking displeased with the new company. He had only come so late in the evening to cheer up his lonely friend. He was sleeping when Sunggyu had called but he could never say no to his clingy roommate. Myungsoo had a weak spot. Although they had met on a whim and knew almost nothing about each other he valued their friendship more than anything else in his life. Sunggyu was the only constant.

Sungyeol eyed Myungsoo who didn’t look to happy next to him and elbowed the dark haired guy in the side.

“What’s with the face, Soo?” Sungyeol was all teeth and gums and smelled like beer. Myungsoo leaned away feigning ignorance. “Okay, mode is happening I see.” Sungyeol decided to ignore the broodiness and join the others in their conversation, well mostly just watching Dongwoo reenact Halloween.

Sungyeol took off his jacket and laid it over his lap. The long limbs stretching out in front of Myungsoo’s face were annoying to say the least.

“Can’t you remove your jacket like a normal person?” Myungsoo scoffed, but he began choking when he caught sight of a crescent shaped mark near the crook of Sungyeol’s elbow.

Sungyeol followed Myungsoo’s gaze to the mark on his arm and looked him right in the eye. “You got me good.” He laughed darkly rubbing the mark with his fingers. Myungsoo seemed to be in shock. “What, cat got your tongue?”

Myungsoo covered his mouth and put his head down on the counter not wishing to recall what had happened the night of the party. After puking up stairs he decided it would be a good idea to continue drinking, a rally they called it, he was good at those. He was left alone with Sungyeol and Sunggyu had banned him from going home. Mentioning things about never letting him back in if he puked anywhere near the furniture or the cat, so he stayed with Yeol.

He bit him.

Multiple times. He remembered something about becoming a real cat after midnight and Sungyeol laughing and groaning in the dark. God what did he do?

Woohyun was sitting quietly and had yet to say a word. Of course he had his notebook with him and of course Sunggyu was eyeing it. Sunggyu wanted to take it away from him. What did he need that stupid thing for when he had real people sitting in front of him more than ready and willing to have a conversation?

“Hey!” Sunggyu was probably a little louder then he should have been because he had gotten everyone’s attention. He laughed nervously walking around to the other side of the counter. “So uh, do you guys want a table or something? You can sit anywhere the place is empty. Coffee anyone?” His plan fell through to call Woohyun out when he didn’t even bother to respond like he had hoped. It was like Woohyun was living in slow motion. Maybe he wasn’t over Halloween.

Woohyun was annoyed and it took all the will power in the world not to jump out of his skin when Sunggyu had shouted. The way it had looked when they walked it wasn’t very convenient. Sunggyu looked very attractive right now and he seemed to have been in an intimate conversation when he and his friends so rudely interrupted. Maybe they should just leave so the two of them could finish what they had started. Myungsoo looked pissed as it was.

“Why do you dress like that if no one is going to see you anyway? Who are you trying to impress?” Woohyun sneered and opened his notebook to a random page. He just couldn’t help what came out of his mouth sometimes.

“Excuse me, nerd?” everyone laughed and Sunggyu smirked. Woohyun had finally acknowledged his presence.

As everyone sprawled out across a big booth in the back corner Sunggyu went to grab mugs and a pot of coffee for everyone. He took a seat next to Myungsoo.

“Nothing, but why put in so much effort? The eyeliner and your hair and all that…” Woohyun distracted himself with his coffee maybe adding a little too much cream and sugar.

Dongwoo watched on noticing his friends strange actions.

“Once again you only ever pay attention to the small things huh?” Sunggyu ran a hand through his hair and then adjusted the collar on his shirt getting comfortable. He rested his arm over the back of the booth behind Myungsoo.

Woohyun’s neck pickled and the hairs stood up. An intense wave of emotions raced through him. After taking a very large sip of his coffee it only got worse. His heart was racing.

“isn’t there a saying… it’s all the little things?” Woohyun thought his response was good enough but apparently not so. He was just too logical for these people.

“Dongwoo, has he always been like this?” Sunggyu ignored Woohyun and looked to Dongwoo who was reaching across the table to help Myungsoo with his origami napkin.

“Yep, sorry man.” Dongwoo laughed smiling brightly.

The night went on, daring each other to eat spoonfuls of sugar and racing shots of creamer. When the food finally arrived everyone ate in silence obviously starved. At some point Sunggyu needed to go outside for a cigarette.

He stood out behind the building leaning against the wall under a flickering flood light. He back door opened from the kitchen and he expected the cook but it was Woohyun.

“Hey, you have to walk through the kitchen to come out that way. That was illegal.” Sunggyu smirked releasing a puff of smoke out into the cold air.

“I doubt that was illegal.” Woohyun wrapped his arms around himself to shield from the freezing air. “Plus there was no one back there anyway.”

“He’s probably passed out in the cooler again. Remind me to let him out before you leave.” Sunggyu took another puff of his cigarette looking up at the sky as he blew it out from his lungs.

“What?” Woohyun looked at Sunggyu. His eyes were closed for a moment and it all seemed perfect. His red hair like flickering embers under the light, pink pursed lips, trembling slightly from the cold air. He wanted to lean into him, for warmth. That is what he told himself, anyway.

“Nothing. So, what did you come out here for?”

“I was thinking.”

“That’s new.”

“Shut up. We’re friends right?”

Sunggyu looked at Woohyun who was now looking up to the stars. Soon the sun would come up and they would disappear behind the burning light of dawn glowing amber and gold.

“Hmm yeah of course we’re friends.” Sunggyu looked for the brightest star in the sky. In that moment he really wanted to make a wish even though he didn’t know what for.

“Good.” Woohyun looked over at Sunggyu suddenly happy and smiling. It was good that they could be friends, he really liked this guy and he was happy their momentary lapse of sanity didn’t ruin things. “You done with your cancer stick?”

“Cancer stick?” Sunggyu snorted. “I’ll never quit.” He eyed Woohyun.

“You will, someday.” Woohyun raised an eyebrow suggesting he knew something Sunggyu did not. “Shall we head in? It’s cold.” Woohyun pretended to shiver.

“You’re a big fat baby you know that.”

The went back inside.

By the time morning came they were all laughed out and someone suggested another party to which Sunggyu volunteered, and when Myungsoo gave him a shocked look he kicked his shin under the table to get his roommate to shut up. He could have a party if he wanted. Of course nothing like that frat house, but something much smaller.

They all said their goodbyes. Woohyun and Sunggyu lingered around each other a little too long parting only at the last second before being dragged in separate directions by their friends.

The night was over and another day had already begun.

Before Woohyun’s head could touch his pillow his phone vibrated. He really didn’t feel like getting up to dig his phone out of his pants that he kicked off before climbing into bed, but he did. He had to close his curtains anyway or the sun would blind him in a few hours.

It was from Sunggyu. Woohyun’s heart skipped a beat.

you better respond to all of my messages’

He didn’t take well to threats so he responded with ‘what if I don’t?’ He had forgotten that he gave Sunggyu his number.

I’ll kill you’

Woohyun laughed and closed his phone tucking it under his pillow laying back down. He whispered good night to his empty room and went to sleep with a smile.
