Song for my Juliette

I found her in the porch, cuddling the teddy bear that I gave her.

"Omo, you're there," she said, bowing politely to me. "I didn't hear you coming."

"I thought of surprising you a bit," I smiled. "Bored?"

"Hm ... yes, kinda," she answered, watching the swaying plants in the garden. Then, seeing the guitar I was holding, she said "Why not play a song?"

"Good idea. I've just finishedcomposing a song and I want you to be the first one to hear it ..."

The moonlight, as if it’ll spill, is definitely dark
Including the almost expolding torchlight
I need to learn how to shine like she does
If I look at her, I’ll be blinded

10 YEARS AGO

I put on my best set of outfit for tonight's event. The city mayor was celebrating his 60th birthday through a masquerade ball. He invited most of the city's residents, mostly boys and girls of my age. Only a very few people know that his daughter, Jihye, was coming from London.

I, very much, wanted to see her again. It has been four years of no communication and so I missed her a lot. She went to London and left me here in Seoul so that she could finish her studies.

After admiring myself in front of the mirror, I grabbed my mask and headed to the venue.

I entered the masquerade ball with excitement and anticipation. Loud music greeted me as I walked in, looking around.

"But ..." I mumbled as a sudden thought hit me. "Aish! How am I supposed to find her here?! Everyone's wearing mask!"

I tried to picture what she might wear in gatherings like this. Perhaps the most beautiful dress? Most magnificent mask? She was the mayor's daughter after all ...

Ah, I would recognize her as soon as I see her!

How would I know it's her? What were the things she used to do which could give me clue?

Not far away, I saw a young lady who was wearing a pink dress. Yeah, she likes the color pink ... but she wasn't that thin.

After that, I saw a girl in orange dress. She and Jihye have the same body and height as far as I could remember when I last saw her. But her hair was curly. How she hated to curl her hair ...

I sighed deeply. "Aigoo~ It's going to be very difficult ..."

Walking around the edge of the dancefloor, looking for a trace of Jihye, somebody almost knocked me off my feet: A lady in simple white dress and matching white mask bumped into me.

Sweet addiction, burning temptation

"Oh -- I'm so sorry --" she said.

"It's okay."

"Ugh -- can y-you please do me a favor?" she asked, panicking.

"What kind of favor?"

"Can you pretend to --"

Suddenly, she took my hand and put it around her waist.

"What --"

"Please," she pleaded. "Just help me."

A tall man came in between the people happily dancing. He walked towards us malevolently.

"Oppa," she suddenly called me loudly, throwing her arms around my neck. "That guy is bothering me!"

I was taken aback. So I had to pretend to be her boyfriend all of a sudden? trying to be helpful, I just rode in with this absurd game. I cleared my throat.

"Is he?" I asked her, hoping I that my acting was convincing. "YA! Who are you? Why are you bothering her?"

He was so tall and I was so short that he looked down at me in his orange mask. "Ya, what do you care? I only want to dance with her, any problem with that?"

"She doesn't want to, see? Leave her alone, man," I said haughtily. "She's my girlfriend," I added for bad boy effect.

"Oh yeah? I don't care. I'll just borrow her for a while, what's wrong with that?"

"What am I? A doll?" she said angrily. "Oppa, make him go~"

"You heard her."

He took one look at the pair of us contemptuously then stormed from the place.
The girl in white broke the hug immediately.

"Thank you so much," she said, evidently relieved.

We stood there awkwardly afterwards.

"So ..."

"Yeah ..."

Both of us chuckled.

"Uh, since we're already here, would you like to dance with me?" I asked timidly.

She shrugged. "Sure," she said, smiling.

Together, we moved towards the dancefloor. I put my hands on her waist and she copied me, putting her hands on my shoulders. We waltzed to the slow sweet music playing.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Hm. What if I don't want to tell you?" she replied  playfully.

"Whoa. What to do? Then maybe, I should just call you names? Something horrible, you like that?" I joined in. For the first time tonight, Jihye was out of my mind.

"Go on, then," she challenged.

"Let's see, Ahjumma ..."

"Is that it?"

"Ya, you ugly fox!"

"so lame ... Anything else?"

Actually I couldn't think of anything.

"Aish, this girl! I'll just call you Juliette, okay?"

"Juliette?! And you'll be Romeo, I suppose?"

"Yeah, well, something like that. I just saved you, didn't I?"

"Oh, very funny ... Romeo plus Juliette."

For the rest of the night, this masked girl in white dress, whom I called Juliette, and I danced while talking of random things. It was amazing how she could easily tell me things as if we've known each other for a long time.
 

I just wished she would remove her mask.

"Oh, I gasped, suddenly remembering why I came here in the first place. "You know what, I'm looking for this girl. She's my childhood friend and I haven't seen her for a long time."

"A childhood friend ...?" she teased.

"Yeah well, I kind of like her for years," I admitted shyly.

"I knew it! Aww~ so sweet!"

"Ya, stop teasing ..."

"Okay, okay! But how can you find her in this masquerade? I mean, everyone's wearing a mask!"

"That's why I haven't any luck yet. For all I know, she could be you!" I said without intending to. Well, it was a possibility.

"Why not?" She laughed. "Actually, I also have a long lost childhood friend-slash-secret love. I just don't know if he's here too of if he ever bothered to look for me. He could be you!"

Even without any words, I already know everything

I stopped abruptly.

"Why?" she asked, confused. "What's the matter?"

Could she be ...?

I looked at her closely, trying to imagine what she would look like without her mask. Her eyes were the exact shade of brown as Jihye's, same dimples, even the same little mole near her lips. Why haven't I noticed it before?

"Ya," she said, giving me a little push, bringing me back to the present. "What's happening to you?"

"Could you remove your mask?"

"Why, suddenly?" she asked.

"I just want to make sure ..."

"Sure of what?"

"Please, just remove it," I pleaded, trying to stop the sudden tears.

"This is supposed to be a masquerade, right? Why would I remove it?"

"I think I've found her."

"Who? Your friend? Where?"

"Right here. In front of me."

She gave a nervous laugh.

"Oh, please. Stop overreacting. Just because I told you I also had a childhood friend, you began acting like that? He can't be you. He hasn't heard of my return from London."

"He did."

"No, ony my family knows that I'm here," she said.

I grabbed her wrist and pulled her away from the dance floor, out of the room.

I stopped under a cherry blossom tree.

"Please, Juliette. If she's not you, I won't bother you anymore."

She thought for a while. "Fine. Remove yours too."

We turned our backs to each other.

"At the count of three. One ..."

I raised my hand to untie the strings of my mask.

"... two ..."

I pulled the mask away from my face.

"... three."

At the same exact moment, we turned to each other.

"Jihye. It's you," I whispered, tears finally falling freely.

"Jonghyun oppa? Is that you?" she said, her face glazed also with tears.

More than four years had passed. Her features matured over those years, more beautiful than before. This friend whom I secretly loved for a long time, the only one I thought of day by day even if she was far away, was finally back. All our moments together flooded my mind. Those frustrating nights I endured, terribly missing her, were instantly replaced by inexplicable happiness.

I pulled her by the hand towards me and kissed her and she kissed me back.

When we broke off, she beamed widely and hugged me tight.

"Oh, it was a beautiful song! It's got my name all over it!" she said, smiling brightly. "I'm absolutely sure, she'll love it too!"

"You think so?" I smiled too, laying my guitar aside. "Oh -- here she comes --"

Jihye joined us, bearing a tray of refreshments.

"Go on, Appa! Sing it to Eomma now!" Juliette said, handing me the guitar.
