It started out with one paper crane.

He had chanced upon an article about it- the myth of how after making a thousand, he would granted a wish. It was dumb and cliched, he had thought at the time.

But then came the time when he had wanted- needed- to distract himself. He had googled how to make it, poring over countless tutorials and after too many papercuts for such a simple thing, he finally made his first one. It was made out of a scrap of notebook paper, random words scribbled all over in his messy, hurried handwriting. The wings were uneven and the neck was deformed, but he made it.

He had placed it on his dresser where he could see it every morning and night, next to the picture frame that he didn't want to see.

Now, hundreds lay scattered throughout his room.

One for every night he missed him.
