~part one~

The Wallflower

Today was just another school day. I walked up to Jinyoung, my best friend, and as soon as I got to him, all of the fangirls crowding around him started sauntering away. We did our usual handshake, and he got his bags from his locker. We were waiting for the other 5 to get to where we were.

It has always been like that, people following Jinyoung. It was never the other way around. In fact, Jinyoung didn’t even have to try to get people to follow him. Everyone around him just seems to want to be friends with him. I mean, who wouldn’t? He’s smart, friendly, and he doesn’t look too bad. I, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. I always fail English and History, because I get lazy and don’t try hard enough, which is why I had to go to summer school. I’m quiet as well, so no one really talks to me except the boys.

A voice suddenly interrupted my thoughts. “Excuse me, Jinyoung-sunbae.” A petite girl looking at her feet spoke up.
"Ah, waeyo? What's up?" Jinyoung questioned.

She looked up at him carefully. “Uh, neh. Please accept my heart!!!” she exclaimed as she pushed a box of what seemed to be chocolates to his chest.
“Ah, Jaehee, thank you, I guess."

She looked up at him with sparkling eyes, “You know my name?"
He gave her a smile “Of course I do.”
“So what’s your answer, Oppa?” She asked.

Well, Jaehee, you’re a cute girl and everything, but it’s just that I think of you as more of a friend than a girlfriend. I’m really sorry.”
She looked back down to her shoes halfway through his sentence. “Arasseo, Oppa. I get it,” she turned around and headed down the hallway.

I knew that girl. Lee Jaehee. We were playmates and friends when we were younger. She looked… different now compared to back when we were 9 years old. She matured well, I guess. We kind of drifted apart when high school started. I became friends with Jinyoung, while she went her own way as well. We haven’t had a proper conversation since freshman year. Hellos and heys, as well as a few questions about schoolwork were exchanged through the years of high school, but nothing more than that.

More time passed, and 5 minutes later, the other boys arrived. “Hey man, what’s up?” Jackson fist-bumped me.
"Nothing much. Jinyoung just got a confession." I responded.
“Really?! Don’t all the usually girls save their confessions for February? It’s always been like that.” Yugyeom piped in.
“I guess she just wanted to be different.” Youngjae said while taking the sweets from Jinyoung’s hands, “She must be pretty rich, man. These are some really high class chocolates."

Youngjae wasn’t completely wrong. Jaehee was the only granddaughter of the owner of a successful entertainment company, which explained why she lived in luxury. Not a lot of people knew about this, though, since she doesn’t really have many friends. I only found out because she invited me over to her house often when we were younger. It was also then that I found out that she would be inheriting her grandfather’s company, and was trained since she was young so that she could debut under their label in the future.

There was only one problem with her family’s plan for her. It wasn’t that she wasn’t talented. She was actually a pretty well-rounded girl. She could sing, dance, and her acting was decent. She could make it as a singer and be successful if she wanted to.

The problem was that she didn’t want that life. Back when we were younger, she just loved being in the kitchen. Whether it was cooking or baking, Jaehee enjoyed it. She was really talented as well. She would even make stuff for me sometimes. Her parents, though, despised the fact that their daughter wanted to do something that they didn’t choose for her. They tried to ban her from the kitchen, and refused to eat whatever she made for them. I guess she finally gave in, since she stopped bringing me food a few months before we started high school.

We were walking out of the school gates, with Youngjae, who unbuckled his belt, and Jaebum eating the chocolates that were originally given to Jinyoung.
“Wow. This stuff is really good. If someone gave me these chocolates and confessed to me, I would say yes on the spot, even if she was ugly.” Jaebum exclaimed.
“It’s not that she was ugly,” Jinyoung said, “She just wasn’t my type. She was cute and all, but I don’t think we would last."
“Cute? Woah. Who’s the girl? Maybe I could ask her out?” Jackson said.
“Lee Jaehee.” Jinyoung replied.
“Hey, don’t you know her, Mark?” Bambam turned to me. I felt another 5 pairs of eyes on me as soon as he finished his comment.
“You know her?” Jaebum asked me. I nodded my head in response
.

That was how us seven wound up in a café with warm mugs of coffee in our hands.
“So, man, how do you know Jinyoung’s secret admirer? Did you know she was gonna confess today? Did you help her?” Jackson went on and on with his questions.
“Jackson, you’re overwhelming him with your questions,” Jinyoung interrupted him, “Now why don’t you tell us all what your relationship is with Jaehee, since everyone but Bambam seems confused about how you know a girl we’ve never seen you talk to since we’ve known you.” He said.

“Well, it all started when I was 10, and she was 9...

We met by chance, actually. I accidentally bumped into her on my first day of school. I had just moved from the U.S., so my Korean wasn’t good at all. She fell to the ground, so I decided to help her up.
“Are you oka – shoot, gwenchana-yo?” I asked nervously, hoping that at the very least, she could understand what I said despite my horrible pronunciation.
“Gwenchana.” She beamed at me. “Are you alright though? You seem to having problems with your Korean.” She said in fluent English.
“Oh, sorry. I just moved here.” I looked away, embarrassed.
“It’s fine. Where did you move to?” she questioned.
“Uh, Gangnam. My parents said that it was the best place to live in Korea.”
“Really? I live there too! You know, I could help you out with your Hangeul if you want me to, since you can barely communicate with other people.” She offered.
“Yeah. That would be a lot of help. I’ll ask my parents after school.” I responded and she turned around to head to her class.
“Wait!” I called out, “I never got your name! I’m Mark, by the way!”
“Oh.” She quickly ran back and said, “I’m Jaehee. Lee Jaehee."
