Meet Kyungsoo
Of Airplanes, Lists and Break-upsChapter 15
Kyungsoo's heart was racing. He had actually kissed the guy. A guy. He had kissed a guy. Well there's something he'd never thought he'd do.
Kyungsoo took out his note pad.
-
Kiss a guy√
"Check," Kyungsoo said while ticking it off his list.
Kyungsoo was by no means gay. In fact he had just broken up with his girlfriend of 5 years. 5 years he would never get back. 5 years wasted on someone he didn't love and didn't love him.
Canada had been quite the turning point in Kyungsoo's life. And what was he doing in Canada? I'm glad you asked.
When Kyungsoo was 10, the neighboring house had stood empty for close to 3 years. Now all of a sudden a moving truck was parked in its drive way. Kyungsoo's face was pressed against the window facing the road, watching the strangers unload the truck. His mother had sounded so delighted at the news of new neighbors. "I do hope they're as nice as the previous resident. Mrs. Cho was such a nice old lady. Sad. Lonely. But very nice. You remember her, don't you Kyungsoo? She was the one who kept calling you princess. Aigoo! You would throw a temper tantrum and pee in her garden. Every. Time. It's weird she never got the message though." Kyungsoo had blocked his mother out at that point. She had always been quite the chatterbox. And the whole thing about peeing in his neighbor's garden only happened once! Okay maybe twice, but that's only because he was 7 and really, really disliked being called princess. Anyway, Kyungsoo left his window in favor of his weekly piano lessons. He had more or less been forced to take private lessons from he was six years old because his mother 'had always wanted to learn how to play, but never been allowed to by her parents.' In the beginning Kyungsoo had hated it, even though he had shown much promise at such an early age. Never the less, playing the piano quickly became his highlight of the week. Learning new techniques and new pieces while being praised to the skies.
One afternoon during a piano lesson, his mother had gone out to buy groceries when there was a knock on the door. Little Kyungsoo had annoyed hopped down from the piano bench to dash for the front door. Two strangers were standing at his doorstep, smiling unnaturally bright.
"Hi. We just moved in next to you a few days ago and wanted to introduce ourselves. Are your parents home?" The woman, clearly in charge of the house greeting, had crouched down to be at eye-level with him.
"Mom's out." Kyungsoo had always been a boy of few words. Not that he was shy or anything, he was just used to other people doing the talking. Even as a kid of 10 years he was blunt with his words, never showing too much of himself.
"Then what about your dad?" It was clear to Kyungsoo that the lady was a very persistent woman, just like his own mother. He had learned over time to be frank with her, before she'd give up on something ridiculous like making him dress up as a girl for her birthday. 8 year old Kyungsoo had responded to that by pulling off his pants, thrown them at her feet and bare bottomed made his way to his room before slamming the door shut. She never asked him again.
"He's dead. "
Slightly taken aback, the two strangers awkwardly made an excuse to shuffle off when his mother decided to come home. 'Great' Kyungsoo sighed.
His mother had invited them in for coffee when Kyungsoo noticed a little girl, peek out from behind her father's legs. He took one look at her before turning on his heels. He didn't have time for this, Beethoven was waiting for him. Kyungsoo went back to his private tutor and played while his new neighbors were led into the living room.
"I'm so sorry about that. Kyungsoo's father isn't dead. But he did leave us when Kyungsoo was around five." They all took a seat on the couch, well except for the little girl, who opted to stand next to a concentrating Kyungsoo. "It was so hard on little Soo when he left. The man was like his own personal hero..." Kyungsoo pressed down the keys harder than he had to. "Kyungsoo honey, can you keep it down?" Choosing to ignore his mother's request, he yelled out a subdued "What?"
"He's very good. Our little Krystal here is also crazy about the piano." "Really? Kyungsoo, why don't you let Krystal play something for us?" Shooting his mother an incredulous look, he reluctantly made room for her on the bench, refusing to completely leave his spot. The girl happily jumped up and made herself comfortable before letting her fingers dance over the ivories. "She's very good indeed." His mother chirped cheerfully.
Kyungsoo disliked Krystal immediately.
