Trial

O, Mio Babbino Caro

"Hunt down."

"Witnesses?"

"Execution."

Those were but a few words floating around in Kangnam's mind, the ones that managed to get past his in and out bouts of conscience. When the poor prince finally awoke from his black prison, he gasped for breath and panicked, his last memory haunting him. Beside him, Tiffany reached a hand to his arm and squeezed lightly. It was enough to quell Kangnam's heart when he looked up into her loving eyes.

"What happened?" Kangnam blinked.

"Someone found you lying in the streets," Tiffany explained seriously. "What business do you have in the Shadows' district, and why did you go alone?"

Faced with those questions, Prince Kangnam couldn't answer. He knew that even the woman who had raised him would not approve of his actions and recent visions for the future of Pakma.

"Kangnam," Tiffany sighed, "don't you know that you can tell me anything? I'm here for you, my dear."

"Tiffany," Kangnam turned his gaze away from her eyes, "why have I been sheltered here in the false peace of the palace when in my own city, fires of hatred burn in my people?"

"Now where did you hear that?" a commanding voice interrupted the two.

"Father," Kangnam looked up. "How long have I been here?"

"Just overnight. But that doesn't mean that what happened wasn't serious."

"He's right," Tiffany nodded. "Now tell us what happened in the Shadow district."

As the memories of Bommie's hate filled eyes came to view, Kangnam couldn't help but begin to cry. There was no way that he could have predicted it would happen, but he still felt that he should have prepared better, or at least told someone where he was going. It broke his heart to think that just maybe, his dream of a united world may never be realized. But that didn't mean that he would give up. No, this incident only further fueled his desire to eliminate discrimination from the world he would one day rule.

Prince Kangnam kept his dream to himself, however, and King Wu and Tiffany eventually left him to recover. The hurt was mostly mental, so Kangnam left his bed before noon to eat. All the while, he kept thinking of Minzy and Bommie. He was certain that they had to have been greatly hurt to harbor such hatred, but he couldn't even imagine what they had been through. As he thought of last night's incident again, Bommie's eyes struck something within Kangnam. He had seen eyes like that somewhere before. The same hurt eyes, the same--

The baby boy.

Bommie's son had been murdered by a heartless monster years ago. It must have been a Light Being for her to think so low of them. Kangnam felt it was his duty to investigate through his Dreams to bring this murder to justice. Not only for the sake of Bommie, but for the firm hand of justice.

This was the reason Kangnam had been given Dreaming powers.

There was something bothering the prince for a few days after his realization that the murdered child was Bommie's. Kangnam knew he was failing to notice a tiny detail that would make the child murder that much clearer, but he couldn't place his finger on it. So far, he knew that the boy was Bommie's son, and had been murdered by a mysterious man in a cloak who got a knife from a butcher. He knew there was something else, but it drove him mad thinking too hard on it. A knock on the door disrupted his thoughts.

"Your Majesty," Joonmyun called from the other side of the door. "Your father wants you to come to the court immediately."

Prince Kangnam shot up from his bed and ran out the door, nearly running over the head butler in the process.

"Sorry, Joonmyun," Kangnam chuckled.

"Your Majesty," Joonmyun bent down and whispered. "I think they found the one who had attacked you that night."

The thought twisted Kangnam's stomach and his eyes widened.

"They have?" Kangnam gasped.

"Yes. They just want your confirmation, I believe."

"Thank you, Joonmyun."

It horrified Kangnam to think about what punishment the Shadow would receive for attacking him. He knew that his father could overreact when concerning him, and Kangnam only hoped that King Wu's judgement would not be clouded. In spite of what happened, Kangnam wished for Bommie to go home unscathed. He just hoped that his father would agree.

In the courtroom, King Wu sat on an elevated desk with several advisors. They were deciding the fate of a dishonest store owner who had withheld money from his employees for his own gain. Although it wasn't serious as, say, a murder, King Wu didn't let these things go unpunished. The king looked in the direction of his son and greeted with a smile, which Kangnam returned warmly. The dishonest man had to pay in full all that he stole from his workers, plus an apologetic interest. Hopefully, this would send the message to all business men and women that lies were not to be tolerated. Prince Kangnam walked up to his father as the next criminal was getting ready to come.

"Hello, son," King Wu smiled.

"Hello, father," Kangnam answered. "What's going on?"

"One of the royal investigators think he's found whoever hurt you. They should be coming in soon."

Despite his nervousness, Kangnam smiled and nodded. As the next person was getting ready, King Wu took his cup of water and lifted it to take a drink. From one of the doors, a familiar Shadow walked in, bound by the hands. King Wu sputtered his drink all over and dropped his cup, the glass shattering when it hit the floor. All eyes were on the king, filled with confusion as he looked at Bommie in shock. The Shadow's eyes were showing great anger and hatred toward the king, and she didn't hold anything back. King Wu stuttered incoherently.

"Father," Kangnam shook the gaping Light Being. "What is the matter."

Several moments passed where King Wu was still in his stupor.

"King Wu," Bommie coldly stated. "Get on with it."

The king shook his head. "Prince Kangnam," he proclaimed loudly, though shakily, "is this the one who attacked you on that night?"

Kangnam looked down into Bommie's cold eyes and felt great pity towards her.

"Yes, but please let her go," came Kangnam's answer.

His plea shocked everyone in the room, including Bommie, the unmistakable hatred in her eyes faltering. A silence aded the room as the words "let her go" hung in the air. Kangnam looked to the advisors, and they were frowning at him. His father's expression still had traces of shock, but was now confused. Bommie stared at the prince in complete stupor.

"Please," Kangnam pleaded again, "let her go."

The guards restraining the Shadow looked at the king for an answer. For several moments, King Wu seemed to think over the request. Kangnam couldn't help but fidget anxiously, hoping his father had the heart to heed his request. The king heaved a sigh, a sign that he had made his decision.

King Wu nodded to the guards, and they released Bommie. The Dark Being bowed, more out of forced respect than anything, and looked up. Her eyes met the prince's, and her former aura softened, though had now become unreadable.

Kangnam nodded his head, and Bommie left.
