Few days later, Changmin’s acting lesson was interrupted by the director’s secretary asking him to come to the main office as soon as his session will be over. Recollection of his last meeting with the big boss came to his mind and he wondered what it could be about now that everything began to work properly.
Not long after, the actor who was teaching him dismissed him, a bit earlier than usual. He gathered his belongings and left, wishing to the older man a good week. Slowly and with questions all over his mind, he walked to the office like he had been invited to. As usual, he knocked and waited politely for the secretary to him inside.
“Ah, Changmin!” He heard when he entered.
“Good evening, sir.” He bowed, only receiving a vague sign from the man, inviting him to come closer.
“How is everything going?” The director asked, putting aside the salutation.
“Pretty well...” Changmin answered hesitantly, not really knowing what was expected from him or from Junsu.
The old man nodded and crossed his fingers under his chin. He looked at Changmin in silence and raised his ring-fingers in front of his mouth as he waited for him to explain further.
“He’s singing... Well, we’re singing.” Changmin finally added. “Together.” He said, a new idea growing in his head.
“Good.” The director commented satisfied. “Very good.”
Changmin agreed, not daring to say much as he expected some surprising news or comment from the other man. The director rolled his chair to get away from his desk and leaned on it. He rocked his chair from side to side and forced a quick rictus that was probably supposed to be a smile.
“In fact we’re thinking about accelerating things a bit.”
“Accelerating?” Changmin frowned.
“Yes. I heard that you get along well and it seems that everything is working well now, but it’s getting too slow. We would like to start promoting already.” The man said with his flat business-man voice, his face serious once again.
“Promoting...” Changmin repeated like a kid hearing a foreign language for the first time.
“Promoting” The other confirmed. “For your debut single.”
“Debut single.” The two words rang inside his head like a bell, again and again like an endless echo. His debut single was the thing he was getting prepared for since the day he first stepped in the agency. Everything in this building was made with this goal. All the trainees were dancing, singing, acting, basically exhausting themselves for this day. The day the director would announce their debut. Even if he had never been the most implicated one, Changmin like any other kept the hope to reach that goal one day. It was more to prove himself and all the others that he could do it than really for the debut itself, but still, he had been waiting for this day.
However, the feeling was very different from what he expected when he had been talking about it with Yunho. He never thought it would feel so... bittersweet.
Working on their duet had been particularly reposing, comfortable and pleasant. He didn’t want this time to stop, he wanted to continue his sweet hours listening to Junsu’s laugh, playing the piano side by side and talking softly until they grew too tired to stay longer. The start of promotion also meant they would begin to work for real... and the training would stop. Soon, they will be doing things on their side and only meet occasionally. It was too early for Changmin and he wanted to enjoy this time a bit longer.
Reaching the end of the process felt almost like a slap. This debut single was what they were training for. If he easily forgot his indignation and doubts about the project during the hours of training with the older boy, the whole purpose of this training suddenly seemed painful.
“We have been talking quite a lot with the persons in charge and we decided to begin recording.” The older’s voice call him back on earth.
“Recording? A song?” Changmin asked, feeling a bit dumb.
“Of course. We want Junsu to record the first song in the next few days. We will see how it goes and then, you will do the shooting for the jacket and the poster. You will train also for the playback, but it’s mostly a question of habit. Once it’s done, your manager will give you the detail about your very first show. From now on, everything should go quite fast.” The director explained, uncaring about Changmin’s shocked expression.
The young trainee stayed frozen for a while, thinking over and over about the same things. Junsu will sing, he will perform. It was what they signed for, the deal they both accepted. It didn’t seem as simple as it had been when he agreed though.
He knew the reason of this weird and disturbing pinch in his chest wasn’t only the deception of being part of such trick but his partner. He almost grew used to the idea of being only an empty decoration, but he began to feel his rebellious side waking up for Junsu. Junsu didn’t deserve to be hidden. He couldn’t accept to let him behind while he would take the light. With such talent, he had to be shown and Changmin wanted to show to everyone how amazing Junsu was.
“I... why now? ... we do work together! He sings with me and... why?!” Changmin said without thinking, bitterness lacing his voice.
“This is the term of your contract Changmin. Eventually he would have to record the song for you to sing them. We're just trying to make this quicker.”
“I know...” He nodded and he hated how insecure he felt saying it. He took a deep breath and tried to clear his mind to explain the situation. “He can sing, he can dance, he can perform... and even better than you think. He’s an amazing artist, he can’t stay inside a recording room forever.”
The old man looked at him to a long time without saying a word. Changmin swallowed with difficulty and wondered how a short explnation in front of a single man could make him more stressed than the idea of being on a stage in front of thousand persons.
“I don’t understand, this was the agreement Changmin. What are you trying to do now?” The man openly criticized.
“I know.” Changmin said, doing his best not to weaken and show his resolution. “I know but he deserves more than that. I will make him sing.” He told with all his conviction. “Just... believe me and he’ll show you.”
His eyes fierce and his chin up, he didn’t even blink while the older man in front of him didn’t move one inch. For a moment they regarded each other, waiting for one of them to look away until a smile broke on the old man’s lips.
“I’ll wait for it.” He said with his usual smirk.
He made a sign to tell Changmin he was dismissed. Changmin turned around and closed his eyes to take a deep breath, ignoring the assistant director’s gaze on him. When he opened them back, he walked out without asking for more, the expression on his face showing all his resolution.
When he passed the door, he took his phone out of his pocket and looked for a number he never
