Nature

Light House

Ji-Eun and Kai began cleaning the windows in silence. Ji-Eun couldn’t help but steal a few glances at Kai, who cleaning the windows with one hand in his pocket and the other wiping the windows lazily. Wow. How can he make a tedious task look so… Cool, Ji-Eun found herself wondering.

The two cleaned for two hours straight, neither of them saying a word. The teacher had noticed how good their behavior was and decided to go easy on them since they were both good students, and would dismiss them before lunch. Ji-Eun was happy that she’d be able to go back to class, and Kai honestly couldn’t care less.

The teacher told them that they only have an hour left of cleaning and dismissed himself, leaving the two in complete silence again.

The silence was interrupted shortly though when a sudden crashing noise echoed through the corridors. Ji-Eun and Kai both looked back when they heard the door slam open, only to see the teacher coming back bringing three other kids, kids that looked like they were probably used to  having to do punishments like this. One of them, Park Heung Soo, had a rep for being extremely tough, and there’s a rumor going around the school about him being the leader of a gang, which wasn’t shocking since he looked like he’d be a future convict. Ji-Eun watched their every action,  and her eyes ended up meeting with Heung Soo’s, and when they did, she almost immediately turned back around to continue cleaning..

After the teacher left, one of the students left, slamming the door behind him,  leaving the four students in the complete silence.

Ji-Eun was wiping one of the many windows and froze as she saw an arm reaching up from behind her, cleaning the higher part of the window above her. She slowly turned her head to see who it was, and to no avail it was Heung Soo.

Heung Soo cocked his head and asked, “What’s a pretty girl like you doing here?”

And began to her hair causing Ji-Eun to flinch at his touch.

Kai, who saw the whole thing, began to ponder whether or not he should help the poor girl, but when he saw that Heung Soo touched her, he felt weird. He didn’t feel sympathy anymore, but it was more of an emotion close to.. Anger? He wasn’t sure why he felt angry though, he just did.

Ji-Eun couldn’t lie, she was scared. She quickly turned back towards the window to continue cleaning, causing yet another smirk to appear on Heung Soo’s face. He found her actions to be amusing, and her “playing hard to get” only provoked him even more.

He grabbed her waist and pulled her body closer to his and whispered something in her ear, but she didn’t hear what he said because at this point she was undeniably terrified.

Before Heung Soo could get closer, an arm intercepted and separated the two. Ji-Eun thought the teacher had returned and decided to help her, but was shocked when she looked up to see Kai, who was now glaring at Heung Soo, angrily. It was the first time Ji-Eun has ever seen Kai mad. All she was used to seeing was that bored expression he always wore, and the sympathetic look he had when he saved her on the bridge.

Kai then walked Ji-Eun over to where he had been cleaning, his eyes never leaving Heung Soo’s.

Once they stopped walking, Kai looked down at Ji-Eun and his expression began to soften, before it returned back to his usual disinterested expression appeared again. He then began cleaning again, but stopped when he heard the girl begin to speak.

“Thank you.” she said quietly, her gaze directed at the ground. Ji-Eun wasn’t sure if she should thank him or apologize. She felt bad for troubling him so much, he helped her three times now, and she hasn’t done anything for him besides cause him grief.

“No problem. Heung Soo’s always messing with-”

Ji-Eun cut him off, continuing, “Not just for this, but for when you helped me with Taecyeon… And for saving me that day… On the bridge,” she said her voice getting quieter and quieter, but Kai heard.

“No problem.” Kai said, realizing that now was his chance. If he didn’t do it now, he probably won’t ever get the chance to ask. He sighed, and turned to Ji-Eun who had began cleaning again.

“Are you alright?” he said slowly, causing Ji-Eun to stop and look over at him. No one’s ever asked her that before. Her parents were never concerned enough to ask, and none of her friends really care enough to. She was touched that he asked, and hearing her thoughts, he knew she was touched. But after hearing her thoughts he began to empathize with her more. No one’s ever asked if he was alright before either.

“I’ll be fine.” Ji-Eun said, a faint smile gracing her lips.

She wasn’t lying though. She had worse times and better times. She’s grateful to be alive, and found her wanting to commit suicide absolutely silly. Just then the teacher came back and dismissed them.

Ji-Eun began to turn down the hall that lead toward the cafeteria, and Kai went in the other direction.

“Where are you going?” she asked, slightly confused.

Kai nodded his head in the direction he was heading, turned around, and continued walking. Ji-Eun wasn’t quite sure if he was telling her where he was going or if he was trying to signal her to follow him. When she noticed how far he got, she decided to just follow him, to ease her curiosity.

She had to jog to catch up to him and when she was about a yard away, she slowed her pace down and just followed behind him, not saying a word. The whole time she was wondering where they were headed, and was confused when they stopped at a tree in the school’s orchard.

She watched as Kai then laid down on his back, and just stared up at the sky. The sight was pretty strange to her, and all she could do was stare at him confusedly. She jumped when she heard Kai speak out, “Are you just gonna stand there.” he asked, sounding slightly annoyed. Ji-Eun then laid down beside him, and when she realized how close she was to him, she scooted over a bit, causing a laugh to emerge from Kai. He had a nice laugh, one that makes you just want to laugh right along with him.

She was shocked to hear him laugh though. Did Kai, “the coolest kid in school”, just laugh.. In front of me?, she thought. From how he behaves, one would think that he doesn’t even know how to laugh.

Kai was just as shocked as Ji-Eun. The last time he laughed? He doesn’t even remember. But all he knows is that he actually.. Sorta kinda enjoyed Ji-Eun’s company and couldn’t help but smile, at first he tried to suppress it, but then he just let go although he probably looked foolish, but he honestly didn’t care.

Ji-Eun looked up at Kai, who had stopped laughing and was now staring at the sky, a slight smile still on his face. She  then looked up at the sky. Both stayed silent, both relishing the silence and peace of nature.
