CHAPTER THREE

Funny How It Happens

You know how people say “That awkward moment when…”? Well I’ve got a new one: that awkward moment when you’re standing in the middle of your ex-boyfriend’s dorm room, holding his daughter, with his band members staring at you in curiosity. It’s long, but it perfectly describes what’s going on at this moment.

“So you and hyung are…” Jongup said, breaking the silence. He glanced at HanMi. “Parents?”

I nodded shyly, glancing down at the ground then peeking over at YongGuk, who was looking rather awkwardly at the ground too.

“You guys don’t have any other kids we should know about, right?” Daehyun blurted out, receiving a smack on the back of his head from Himchan.

Despite the heat spreading across my cheeks, I couldn’t help but laugh at his bluntness. “HanMi is the only one.”

“For now.” Youngjae said with a smirk.

“Okay!” YongGuk yelled over the guys’ laughter, his own face growing as red as mine. “I think it’s time for dinner. Who’s cooking tonight?”

“You are, hyung.” Junhong said, trying to hide his smile behind his hands. YongGuk sighed and walked over to the kitchen, leaving HanMi and I with the rest of the guys.

“So, SoKyung-noona, what was it like to date YongGuk-hyung?” Daehyun asked, gesturing for me to sit down on the couch. I placed HanMi on the floor near my feet and sat down on the couch with a sigh.

“Pretty nice, actually. He’s really sweet.” I replied with a smile.

                “You guys never fought?”

                “He never annoyed you?”

“What kind of embarrassing things did he do around you?”

Suddenly, there was a bang from the kitchen and YongGuk came storming into the living room. He reached out and grabbed my hand and dragged me into the kitchen before I had anytime to answer the questions.

“Help me with something.” He mumbled, going back to the counter and picking up a knife.

“With what?” I asked, leaning against the counter and staring at the ingredients spread out.

                “I don’t know. Something. Anything.”

“Hyung! We were talking to noona!” Youngjae cried out, walking into the kitchen. YongGuk turned around and pointed towards the living room with the knife.

“Out.” He said in a warning tone. Youngjae turned and walked out without another word.

I smiled and turned to the grab rice cooker towards the back of the kitchen counter. “I’ll clean the rice.”

“Sounds great.” YongGuk responded. We worked in a comfortable silence for a while, which gave me enough time to lose myself in my thoughts.

We used to cook together when he’d lived with his hyungs in Soul Connection. The major difference from then to now is that we weren’t talking. Usually, it would take quite a lot of effort to shut us up when we were together. Even though it wasn’t awkward with just the two of us, it did feel off. Of course, I wasn’t expecting for it to be just like nothing had happened between us, so it didn’t surprise me. I just hadn’t expected for it to be this quiet.

“You’re hands are gonna get all shriveled up.” YongGuk said, staring down at the sink, but every so often stealing glances at me.

I blinked and looked up at him in confusion. He sighed and walked over to where I was standing and reached down, gently pulling my hands out of the rice cooker, where I had been cleaning the rice for the past fifteen or so minutes.

“I think the rice is clean.” He said with a small smile, looking directly at me. I stared at him for a second, taking in how much more mature he looked now. I’d always seen him as the maknae in Soul Connection, but now that he was a leader, something about him had changed.

Realizing that I was probably creeping him out, I cleared my throat and stared down at the rice. “Yeah, probably.” I mumbled, slightly awkward. Once we were done preparing dinner, we let it set and cook on its own for a bit. We walked into the living room, but stopped at the sight that welcomed us.

There was toilet paper strewn everywhere, clothes thrown here and there, and a trail of toothpaste leading from the bathroom down the hall. Youngjae was the only one in the living room and he was currently absorbed with something on an iPad, so I assumed the others were in their room or something.

“Where’s HanMi?” I asked, looking around in shock.

Youngjae pulled his headphones out of his ears and looked up at us. “What?”

“HanMi? My daughter? Where is she?”

Youngjae glanced around as if expecting to find her in the mess. “Whoa, what happened here?”

It was moments like these that make me grateful that I have a hand to smack my forehead with. “Youngjae,” I said slowly, trying my best to not yell at him out of frustration. “Do you have any idea where HanMi could be?”

“SoKyung!” I heard YongGuk call from down the hall. Dreading what I was about to find, I walked down the hall towards the sound of his voice.

“Yeah?” I asked, stopping in front of the slightly opened bathroom door.

YongGuk opened the door to show me why he had called me. The entire floor was covered in water from the over-filled bathtub, the toilet was clogged with toilet paper, and HanMi stood in the middle, looking up at YongGuk with innocent eyes. I closed my eyes in an attempt to calm myself. We’d been here for less than two hours and HanMi was already wreaking havoc.

                Awesome.

“HanMi-ah, what are you doing?” I heard a voice say from behind me. I looked back and Himchan was standing behind me with an amused smile on his face. He caught my eye and shook his head. “Don’t worry, the bathroom floor needed to be washed anyway.”

“You haven’t seen the living room yet.” I replied, shaking my head with a sigh. I turned back to look at YongGuk. “I am so sorry; I should have been watching her.”

YongGuk shook his head as he grabbed a towel. “Don’t even worry about it. She’s a little kid, of course she’s going to make a mess.” He bent down and started wiping some of the toothpaste off of HanMi’s cheek. “Tell umma that she shouldn’t worry.” He said to her. She giggled at him and tried to squirm away from the towel, but he was faster and was able to hold onto her before she had a chance to run for it. I stood there and smiled slightly at the cute interaction, but then sighed and went to go get another towel to try and help clean up the water.

We spent a good hour and a half cleaning up the bathroom then spent another forty-five minutes cleaning up the living room. Even with seven of us, the mess was still pretty overwhelming. Once we were done, we all stood around, admiring our hard work.

Then the smell of burning food broke through the smell of cleaning supplies. YongGuk and I both looked at each other in shock.

“We forgot the food!” I cried out as we both ran into the kitchen and started turning the oven and other cooking appliances off, trying our best to salvage anything we had left, but to no avail. We stood there, staring at what was once dinner unhappily. The other guys entered the kitchen and joined us in our stares of despair.

“Now what?” Junhong asked after a while.

I sighed and pulled my phone out of my back pocket. “Order anything.” I said, handing the phone to him. “I’ll pay, it’s the least I can do after all of this happened.” Both Junhong and Daehyun went into the living room to order dinner for us, while we cleaned up the mess for the third time that night.

Needless to say, by the time dinner had arrived, we were exhausted but starving. We ate in a silence that only happened when everyone was too busy stuffing their mouths with food to speak. Once it was all gone and the dishes were placed in the sink to be cleaned at a later date, the guys set to work on a makeshift bed for HanMi and I.

“Seriously, you guys don’t have to do this.” I said, standing off to the side as Himchan and Daehyun carried a few of their pillows into the living room.

“Seriously, you can stop saying that now.” Youngjae said, as he and Jongup carried in one of the mattresses from their room.

“I’m not taking one of your mattresses!” I cried out, trying to push them back to their room. “Put it back on whoever’s bed it belongs to.”

“It’s YongGuk-hyung’s, you can stop freaking out now.” Jongup said, passing by me and laying the mattress on the ground. The guys placed blankets and pillows on the bed and said their goodnights before I had anytime to protest more. I sighed, laid a blanket across HanMi—who was sleeping on the couch—before lying down on the mattress and getting comfortable.

What was I getting myself into?

Just as I was about to fall asleep, my phone rang. It was Hana.

“What do you want?” I grumbled, answering the phone after the first ring.

                Hana chuckled. “How’s it going?”

                “You’re evil.”

                “That well?”

“HanMi clogged the toilet, flooded the bathroom and TP-ed the living room.” I said, sitting up.

There was a beat of shocked silence. “And you’re still there?”

“They’ve been very understanding.” I replied.

“Marry one of them, Lee SoKyung. I don’t care which one, just marry one of them.” She said instantly.

I couldn’t help but break into a smile at her words. “They’re understanding and young.”

“Oh, right, you like older men.” Hana paused. “How about their manager?”

“Goodnight, you royal pain.” I said, starting to hang up the phone.

“Just think about it, okay?” she cried out as I pulled the phone away from my ear. I rolled my eyes and hung up.

Leave it to Hana to try and set me up with my ex-boyfriend’s manager.

i had a dream the night it came out. i was Bang's sister that didn't know about their gang activity, i just thought they worked hard or something for their money. but when i found out that Youngjae had gotten kidnapped, i went with the guys to go give the money and get him back. When Bang started shooting, Himchan pushed me behind some crates and i stayed there until everyone was dead. then my dream literally rewinded like the MV and i remember me pushing through the SWAT team and jumping on Youngjae and trying to strangle him...

it was slightly a weird dream...slightly
