Eleventh Kiss: Puppy Love

For the past few weeks Changmin had been staying at TVXQ’s dorm on his own. Yunho had started filming for a new drama. The venue for the shoot was far from their dorm so Yunho decided to move temporarily, for convenience.

It was late at night already and Changmin was still wide awake. He didn’t feel like going to sleep yet, so he decided to watch a movie.  Later on Changmin figured that watching a movie didn’t seem to be so fun when Yunho’s not around. He let out a tired sigh as he turned off the TV and the DVD player and slumped comfortably on the couch. He stood up to go to his room to get dressed. He started to crave for ice cream. Changmin tends to stress eat when he gets lonely. He figured it was wrong in a way. He’s an artist and he has to maintain his good figure, but he was also human… 

He put on his coat and got his wallet and house keys. A convenience store was just nearby so he decided to walk. As he got there, he grabbed a basket which he filled with a tub of cookies and cream ice cream, boxes of Pocky, cartons of strawberry milk and other snacks. After paying and getting his snacks packed. He walked by the door to go out and go straight home. He was surprised when he spotted a cute fluffy-looking Maltese.  It had a red collar, with a silver bone-shaped pendant. Other than it’s collar, it also hada blue bowtie.  It could’ve been a cute looking puppy if its white fur wasn’t covered in mud and dirt.

Changmin had an urge to keep the dog, but after seeing its collar, he figured it might belong to someone else already and that owner might have been looking for it. So, he continued walking and decided to leave it alone.

He let out a soft sigh as he got TVXQ’s house. He pushed his keys to the door and just as he was about to enter when he heard a bark right behind him. Much to his surprise, the dog followed him on the way home and it seems to like him so much. It went closer to Changmin and rubbed its head on his leg. Changmin put his bag of snacks on the floor to crouch down to give the dog a pat.

“Aigoo~ Where’s your owner, hmmm?” He asked in worry. “You shouldn’t be up outside this late. It’s dangerous.”

The dog looked at him with pleading eyes, making him laugh.

“Fine… You can stay, but I’ll give you back if your owner goes looking for you. He or she must be so worried about you…” He said, giving it a pat on the head before standing up to go inside the house and letting it enter as well.

The dog was so excited it went running on circles, making Changmin smile. Changmin couldn’t help but think about his pet Mandoongie whom he left at his home with his sisters and parents. He was really sad he had to leave her. He couldn’t take care of her anymore because of his work.

Changmin was happy to have a dog for a while. He knew it will only be temporary, but at least he didn’t have to be lonely while Yunho’s gone. He picked up the Maltese and brought it to the sink to give it a bath.

“Let’s get you cleaned first, arasso?” He said as he slowly took off the dog’s bowtie and collar. He stared at what was engraved on the pendant of the collar for a while. It said, “Cloud” which he assumed must be the dog’s name, at the back of it, another name was engraved together with a contact number.

“Lee Ri Ah…” Changmin read and the dog barked, hearing its owner’s name. “Lee Ri Ah is your owner?”  He asked as he scrubbed the dog who jumped in approval. Changmin giggled as bubbles got splashed on his face. “Arasso, we will contact her later…”

Changmin couldn’t help but feel as though the name, Lee Ri Ah was familiar to him. It seemed to ring any bells for him, but he shrugged the thoughts away as he got focused on Cloud. After getting Cloud cleaned, Changmin opened the pantry to look for something Cloud could eat. Luckily, he found some dog food that Mandoongie and Taepoong left when he and Yunho left them with their families. He got Mandoongie’s old bowls and put water and food for Cloud to eat. The dog snuggled closer to Changmin to thank him for the food before it happily ate its meal.
 

Ri Ah was so stressed out. It was already late at night, but she was still out with her brother, looking for her lost pet. The skies didn’t seem to side with her either. Rain started pouring. Her brother, Rui rushed to put a jacket around her and share his umbrella with her. They went inside the car, Rui on the driver’s seat and Ri Ah on the passenger’s seat. They stayed still in the car, before Ri Ah burst into tears. Her brother gave her a comforting hug.

“We’ll look again, tomorrow.” He assured her and she sobbed on his shoulder.

“He could be out there in the cold, sick, sick lonely and afraid…” She worried as he patted her back and hushed at her.

“He’ll be okay. He’s the strongest, cutest pet I know.” Rui said. “I’m sure some nice person found him. Who knows he or she might contact you soon…”

With that, the two drove home to take a shower and change into comfortable clothes to get some rest. Rui gave Ri Ah one last hug, before he went to his room.

Ri Ah laid down on her bed and stared at the ceiling, still wondering where Cloud could be. She couldn’t help but get so emotional over Cloud. Cloud was given to her by their dad, at that time he left to work in Japan in order for their family to pay their expenses. Her father worked there for a few years, and every time they missed him, Cloud was there to keep them company. Now that their family is complete, she couldn’t afford to lose Cloud. He had been with them every step of the way.  When her best friend left her, Cloud never left her side. When her crush ‘friend zoned’ her, Cloud loved her truly. In ups and downs, Cloud was always there for her. Life wouldn’t be complete without Cloud.

Ri Ah couldn’t help but blame herself. She was out in the park with Cloud. She brought them there to play with him and spend some time with him. But she left him for a while to buy ice cream. She told him to stay put, but the dog seemed to be distracted with something and … POOF! He’s gone!

After a few minutes, her dad came in her room. Ri Ah sat up straight to wipe her tears. After her dad found out about Cloud, he knew how affected Ri Ah was about the situation. He pulled her into his arms and her hair lovingly.

“He’ll be alright. He has always been a good boy. Good things happen to good people, or in Cloud’s case, good dogs, good pets. If we won’t find him, I bet he’s in a good place, where someone else needs him more than you do, now…” Her dad said. Ri Ah feared of letting Cloud go. She loved him so much… She wasn’t ready. She hadn’t even said good bye to him. She hoped someone would contact her in the morning and give Cloud back.
 

In the morning, Changmin woke up to prepare breakfast for himself and feed Cloud. He cooked some Omurice for himself and after eating and feeding Cloud, he went to do the rest of the few chores in TVXQ’s house. After finishing the chores, he had nothing else to do. He decided to contact Cloud’s owner right away. He loved Cloud the moment he let him in TVXQ’s dorm, but he knew someone owns Cloud and that that owner might be worried sick about his or her pet.
 

 Changmin dialed the number engraved on Cloud’s pendant collar. It took a few rings before he got an answer. It was a girl’s voice. He voice sounded hoarse and husky, as though she had been crying all night.

“Hello… I would like  to speak to Ms. Lee Ri Ah please…” He said politely.

“This is she…” She answered in a tired tone.

“I’m Max…” Changmin said, feeling hesitant to let her know who he is.  It was a bit dangerous for a celebrity like him, after all. “I would like to inform you about your pet, Cloud. I found him last night. He’s in good hands and he’s alright. I’d like to give him back to you since he seems to miss you a lot and I know you might be worried sick about him…”Changmin continued  in a polite manner.  Ri Ah was silent for a while; it got Changmin worrying that the call got cut. “Umm… Miss… You still there?”

“Yes… I understand. Oh my goodness… Thank you so much! I was so worried about him…” Ri Ah’s tone became more cheerful, upon hearing the good news. Changmin was relieved. He gave her an exact location on where he’ll meet her to give Cloud back, before hanging up.

He went upstairs to shower and change into outdoor clothes. After getting his keys, phone and wallet and putting on a hooded jacket and a mask, he took Cloud and rode his car. He put Cloud on the passenger’s seat next to him. In a few minutes, he was at the park where he promised to meet Ri Ah.

He sat on a bench and waited for her. In a few minutes, he got a text from her.

I’m here. I’m wearing a red coat over a pink dress. Where are you? Where’s Cloud? – Lee Ri Ah

Changmin put his phone in his pocket. He put his mask down, but still kept his hood up to avoid attention from any fan.  He looked for a girl at the park wearing a red coat. He spotted only one, nearby a tree. He took Cloud with him and approached her. She looked around as she gripped her phone tightly, feeling nervous.  He put his hand on her shoulder and she got startled as she turned her attention to him.

He gave him a genuine smile, as to avoid scaring her. He figured he might look a bit creepy in his hooded jacket. Ri Ah  gasped in shock as soon as she noticed who he is. He held Cloud to her and Cloud barked excitedly, making her snap from her reverie.

“Omona… You’re…” She said as she unconsciously took Cloud in her arms.

“Max as in Shim Changmin… Happy to deliver Cloud to you… Ms. Lee Ri Ah, right?” He asked with a smile and she just nodded, still in awe. Changmin tooka closer look at her and figured she looked pretty familiar to him…

“Excuse me… Have we met?” He asked but Ri Ah just stared at him. “Lee Ri Ah… Wait… Didn’t we go to Kyunghee University together? You’re ahead of me for one year…”

Changmin then remembered as he looked at her. The same, cute face, long brown hair… Changmin admitted to himself that he had a huge crush on her.

“Changmin-shii… Oh my gosh… I don’t know what to say…” Ri Ah said. She remembered being in the same school as Changmin, but she never really got to talk to him that much since they were from different classes, but she did saw him along the university premises. The next thing she knew, her former schoolmate is already TVXQ’s maknae, a guy a lot of girls would die for…

She was really shocked. Ri Ah had always been a fangirl of him. She listened to him all the time and watched his videos over the net. She felt lucky, having him find her precious Cloud and meeting him in person. Truly, she noted she’ll give Cloud lots of treats later. She planned to scold him, for having her worried, but meeting Changmin saved Cloud big time..

“It isn’t really much… Anyone would do the same as I did…” He said. “I’ve had pets before and I know what it’s like for them to be away from you… So, yeah… I knew I had to do the right thing… I have to admit, I was tempted to keep him… He’s really cute and fluffy…”

Ri Ah giggled. “That’s why I named him Cloud…” She said with a smile as she looked at Cloud in her arms then turned to Changmin again. “I would like to make it up to you… Can I invite you to grab some coffee with me, perhaps? My treat?”

Changmin smiled. He felt so giddy inside. His heart skipped a beat.

“Sure… I guess, that would be fine…” He said sheepishly and Ri Ah smiled.

“It would be such an honor to invite Cloud’s hero for coffee…” Ri Ah said “I’ll treat you some other day. Pets aren’t allowed in coffee shops. I have to take Cloud home.” Ri Ah said as she settled her pet down and put him on a leash.

“Sure… Just text me when you’re free. You have my number, right?” Changmin asked as he placed his hands in his pockets. Ri Ah smiled as she tucked her hair in her ear.

“Yes… I’ll see you soon…” She said before leaving him in awe.
 

A week has passed and Changmin didn’t get a single message from Ri Ah.  He laid down on his bed and let out a sad sigh, thinking that Ri Ah might have forgotten about her promise. He wanted to text her so badly, but he was too shy. Changmin never felt like that around girls, but Ri Ah truly was special.

Changmin jolted from his position when he felt his phone vibrate next to him. He took his phone excitedly and smiled as soon as he saw Ri Ah’s name on the screen. He had a wide smile on his face.

Changmin-shii, this is Ri Ah… Sorry I didn’t get to text you these past few days… Would you still consider having coffee with me? When are you free? ^^

Changmin immediately replied to her. All of a sudden he was happy and giddy, like a love-sick teenager.

You free today? I have nothing to do today. It’s pretty boring here without hyung around…
 

The two agreed to meet at Coffee Cojee, Jaejoong’s shop. Ri Ah was really surprised when Changmin agreed to go there. She knew how he had been sensitive about the split, but turns out the five boys are actually meeting one another secretly. Ri Ah was the only Cassie who knows.

At the Coffee Cojjee , the two ordered  blue berry cheesecake and latte. They sat on a corner where no one can notice them. Changmin knew that if fans would find him he’d be so dead, other than that, he knew SM wouldn’t like it if he is seen in Jaejoong’s coffee shop, causing rumors about OT5 spreading all over the net.

Changmin kept his hood up again and pulled his mask down to take a bite from the delicious cheesecake and a sip on his coffee. He looked at Ri Ah who did the same and couldn’t help but smile as she had cream on the corner of her lips.

“You have something over here…” Changmin said as he  leaned forward and wiped the cream with his thumb, making her blush a deep shade of crimson.

Changmin took notice of how she blushed despite the fact that she tried to hide it, by looking away from him.

He gave her a warm smile in which she returned to him. The two were silent for a while, until Changmin spoke, starting a conversation with her.
 

“So, how’s Cloud?” He askedout randomly, Ri Ah couldn’t help but smile at how concerned Changmin was about her pet.

“Well, he’s okay… Still the usual, active and adorable maltese… He gets lonely at times, though… He doesn’t have many playmates especially when I’m a t work. That must be the reason why he almost ran away…” Ri Ah answered …

“Just like Mandoongie… I miss her a lot…  I had to leave her with my sisters… She gets lonely in the dorm since Yunho-hyung and I are always busy…” Changmin said. “Next time, if I would have the time I’d bring her so Cloud can play with her…”

“That would be nice…” Ri Ah agreed.

 

Time seemed to go fast since their conversation was very interesting. Changmin loved talking to Ri Ah and he did his best to keep the conversation on. Ri Ah, felt the same way about Changmin as well. He was very funny and she figured, he had quite a personality. Ri Ah, though she had been talking to him for so long, still couldn’t believe that he was conversing with her. She knew how many girls would kill to be in her position as of that moment. Right then and there, Ri Ah saw Changmin as a normal person, someone who seemed so reachable, someone who’s simple and easy to talk to, a bit different from the Changmin she sees in TV. She liked the Changmin in front of her. He seemed less complex and more approachable.

Changmin on the other hand, liked how Ri Ah seems to treat him like any normal person. It made things more comfortable for him. Ever since he became a celebrity, girls seemed to treat him differently, like he’s some sort of royalty. Changmin admitted, at first he liked the attention, but as time passed he figured that all those girls only liked him because of the fame and fortune he has.  He realized, that if he hadn’t been part of TVXQ, he wouldn’t be given that much attention. It made Changmin uncomfortable. He hated getting ‘special’ treatment just because he’s a famous artist. He is also human and he wanted to feel like any regular guy and talking with Ri Ah made him feel more human and more comfortable. For him the kind of treatment that Ri Ah gave was less awkward and more warm and welcoming…

He loved that feeling…

He couldn’t help but become drawn to her, not only because of her good looks but also because of her pleasing personality. Ri Ah was fun and easy to talk to. Though she admitted to him that she had been his fan, she had been treating him like a regular person.

Time passed and they both have to leave, much to their dismay, but Changmin promised they’d keep in touch. Changmin loved her company. Changmin figured, she’s fun to be with and somehow, she is his type of girl.

Both couldn’t wait to see each other again…
 

Weeks passed and Ri Ah didn’t get to talk to Changmin anymore. Ri Ah figured that a celebrity like him is always busy and there’s no way that he’d get attracted to a girl like her. At first, Ri Ah admired Changmin only as an artist. It wasn’t in the level of love or anything. But when she saw how kind he was, she had to admit, he became her instant crush. But Ri Ah felt those feelings won’t grow into something. She thought, Changmin won’t be interested in a girl like her. She was just too plain for him, compared to all the girls around him in the entertainment industry.

Things change however, when Ri Ah woke up one morning and found a package secured with a ribbon on the table of their living room.  

“A package came today… It’s for you…” her brother Rui said with a smile. Ri Ah took the package. It had a post-it note attached to it.

She read what’s written on it.

Dear Lee Ri Ah,

                Better late than never, right? Thank you for the coffee ^^ I had a great time with you! Next time, I’ll be the one to treat you… kekeke… For now, enjoy these cookies… I made them myself…

Ri Ah smiled to herself, upon reading the note. She opened the package and found a microwavable Tupperware that contained chocolate chip cookies in different shapes and sizes, hearts, stars, bears… Ri Ah opened the Tupperware, the cookies smelled great. She smiled as she took one bear-shaped cookie and took a bite.  She smiled in content; the cookies even brought Changmin closer to her heart.
 

A few minutes passed and Ri Ah decided to take Cloud to the park. She got dressed in shorts and a loose shirt. She brought her iPod with her, put Cloud on a leash and walked to the park with him. She was out jogging with him when Cloud became hyper again and went to a different direction she was going.  She gasped when Cloud kept running in circles, causing her to let go of his leash by accident. She ran after him, afraid she might lose him again. It took a while for Cloud to stop. Ri Ah was relieved when he did. She sat on the grass and breathed heavily. All the running she did got her really tired.

It took a while for her to notice what got Cloud running. She smiled as she saw her pet cuddling close to a female maltese. It had fur as white as Cloud’s She had a pink collar and a ribbon on her head.

“Aigoo~ Cloud is in love…” Ri Ah teased as she sat closer to the two dogs playing and running around in circles.

“Mandoongie! You got me really worried…” A man shouted out loud as he ran towards the two dogs and Ri Ah. He was breathing real hard when he reached them and stopped.

Ri Ah couldn’t help but feel as though the voice sounded familiar. She thought the name, Mandoongie sounded familiar as well. She turned around and found Changmin , who immediately smiled and greeted her. He let out a tired chuckle as he wiped the sweat off his forehead. Ri Ah stood up to greet him.

“Hi…” She said with a smile as she tuck her hair behind her ear.

“So… What brings you here?” Changmin asked, his smile getting wider every moment he observed the beautiful woman before him. He couldn’t help but find her gestures adorable.

“Well, I went to a morning jog with Cloud… After munching on the cookies you gave, I knew I had to exercise…” She said, giggling.

“You look perfect. You don’t have to exercise…” Changmin said unconsciously. Ri Ah felt her face heat up at his sudden remark. Changmin couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed at the sudden slip of the tongue.

“Thank you…” Ri Ah spoke as she looked down, feeling a bit conscious at the singer’s presence.

“So… You got the cookies?” Changmin asked awkwardly as he and Ri Ah sat on the grass, with Mandong and Cloud cuddling in front of them.

“Yeah… They taste really great… I finished the whole box in one seating…” Ri Ah replied giving him a ‘thumbs up’.

Changmin felt glad about the remark he got. He wanted so badly to impress her. After all, she is his crush.

The two looked at Cloud and Mandong who were playing with each other, running around in circles.


“They seem to really like each other…” Changmin remarked and Ri Ah nodded in agreement. Changmin turned his head to gaze at Ri Ah. He smiled at how beautiful she looked as she watched Cloud and Mandong.

Changmin couldn’t help but remember those times when he saw her around campus. She was pretty popular, among the students and the professors. He had always heard his professors mention her, since she was one of the smart students around the campus. A lot of guys had their eyes on her as well, since she is good looking. Changmin always saw her around the corridors. He never got to talk to her back then. It was only now that he felt that he and Ri Ah had a connection. Back then, he was too shy to approach her, even if he had already been pretty famous that time.

Changmin was glad that he found Cloud. If it weren’t for him, he couldn’t have gotten that close to Ri Ah. RI Ah on the other hand had been thinking of Changmin as well. He felt him staring at her, so she looked back at him with a smile. She remembered all those times she saw him around campus. She never got to talk to him because a lot of fangirls have always been crowding around him. Changmin, she observed, back then was a shy guy. If she hadn’t known that he is TVXQ’s maknae she would’ve mistaken him for a normal guy. In campus, Changmin always preferred to be alone. She even saw him in the library at times she went there to study. He was a quiet and hard working. She figured, behind the stage and off cam, Changmin had this regular, common guy side. She loved that side because he seemed more real to her. She was happy she got to see him that way and she was happy that her Cloud became her bridge to him, to get to know him better.

Once again, at that time, though quite awkward, Ri Ah and Changmin had a good time together. They talked and laughed and played with Cloud and Mandong until afternoon. Changmin decided to walk her and Cloud home. The two talked and talked until they reached Ri Ah’s house.

“So… I’ll see you again, soon?” Changmin asked with a tone full of hope as he looked at Ri Ah’s gorgeous eyes. He kept his sweaty hands in his pockets, his right hand, gripping tightly on Mandong’s leash.  Ri Ah on the other hand, tried to keep herself calm as she kept her hands behind her as she held on to Cloud’s leash.

“Sure…” She replied with a sweet smile. “I should get going…” She  squeaked and motioned to go inside her house, when Cloud ran circles around her, causing his leash to get tangled  around her and getting her tripped afterwards. Changmin, in front of her, motioned to catch her from falling. Things started to get better when Mandong leaped to push Changmin a little more forward and closer to Ri Ah. Both had their eyes widened in shock when their lips touched, in an accidental, unexpected and awkward kiss.

 The two immediately pulled away from each other and tried to regain composure after everything that happened. Cloud and Mandong barked and ran in circles again, both giving their owners a sign of approval.

Changmin scratched the back of his head sheepishly.  Ri Ah looked away, her cheeks turning as red as a tomato.

“Sorry…” The two said in unison, avoiding each other’s gaze.

The two stood there, waiting for one of them to speak.

Changmin spoke after a few seconds, breaking the awkward silence between them.

“So… What happens now?” Changmin asked as he lifted her head up, by the chin, making her look straight in his eyes, finally gaining a little confidence to step it up a little.

“I don’t know… Well…” Ri Ah answered as she looked into Changmin’s mesmerizing eyes. She loved how his eyes become mismatched when he smiles.

Changmin let out a sigh as he held both of her shoulders and looked at her.

“I had always liked you… I had always been looking at you back then, when we were at Kyunghee University…” He confessed. “Look, this may seem pretty crazy but, I had always had a huge crush on you to be honest… When I got to know you better because of Cloud… I’m just couldn’t stop thinking of you…”
 
“Wow…” Ri Ah sighed in disbelief, taking a few seconds to absorbed everything Changmin had said.

“Sorry if I freaked you out…” Changmin blubbered nervously at Ri Ah who was still in a daze.

“Well, I had always kind of liked you too. I had always been your fan. When we were at Kyunghee, I had always been looking at you from a far and I realized that you weren’t just good at singing, you’re great at academics too. Back then what I felt was a mere attraction, a mere crush, but when you gave Cloud back, I realize that you’re a really nice guy and well… “ Ri Ah bit her lips at the sudden confession that came from her. She looked at Changmin and then at the dogs who jumped and ran in circles.

“Let’s get to know each other and see where this leads, what do you say?” Changmin asked with a  smile.

“Are you asking me on a date?” Ri Ah answerd with a question.

“You can say… So… The usual place?” Changmin asked with a smile. “Coffee? My treat this time…”

“Sure…” Ri Ah agreed, smiling back at him, before taking Cloud who had just snuggled with Mandongie and gave her a cute puppy-kiss…

As soon as Ri Ah closed the door, she held Cloud in her arms.

“You’re my good boy… Aigoo, you just got us a date… Haha…” Ri Ah giggled as she kept her back at the door and hugged Cloud, remembering how Cloud seemed to like Mandongie. Ri Ah giggled as soon as Cloud her cheek.

Meanwhile, Changmin, who was outside lifted Mandong in his arms and gave her a kiss.

“Aigoo~ We have to get you a nice dress to impress Cloud… Help me pick out a nice polo shirt or something?” He asked and she barked in approval.
