This miserable heart of mine

"...You got it right, Jae! I knew you can do it!" Heejin gives him a high-five when they received the results of their monthly exams.

Through Heejin's help, Jaejoong managed to get passing grades after spending three hours at the bus stop studying right after their classes ended. She initially offered to go to her house but he refused, thinking he would be a burden for her, and he didn't like the idea that they study at his place instead.

"But my mom really wants to see you!" She pouted, taking his hand. "And I'll even cook Dakgalbi for you!"

"No," he replied, squeezing her hand lightly. "Let's just go somewhere else."

She complies and they go around to look for a cheap cafe to stay, but unfortunately, they find nothing. Because he had to show up for training, they sat down at a nearby bus stop, completely ignoring the people staring at them. At that time, he felt guilty rejecting her earlier offer to study at her house.

It must have been great to finally meet her mother and have Heejin cook for him a delicious Dakgalbi. It must have been great to eat with her after a tiring study session. If only his anxiety didn't get in the way.

Meanwhile, Heejin is in the midst of breaking down at her office. She is to deliver a quarterly report at the company headquarters and she hasn't studied it well, there are still heaps of paperwork on queue and another client was waiting for the ad campaign she promised. Sure, being an advertising executive for her father's company is a nice and high-paying job, but it usually revolved around meeting deadlines, which isn't really her thing. Plus, her father is really strict with meeting expectations.

"Jihye!" She calls for her assistant. "Please prepare my car, I'm so late!"

Jihye pops in her office and picks up Heejin's car keys. "Miss Son, your parents also wish to see you for dinner, please don't forget that."

"I understand." She nods. "Thank you, Jihye."

After exactly ten minutes, and running out of time, Heejin makes her way to her car, anxiously looking at her phone.

Just one call, please.

It's difficult

"Are you still mad at me?" Jaejoong peers at Heejin, who was looking at the scenery in front of her. Classes had ended, and they both decided to visit Han River for a while as a reward for not failing any subject. The afternoon breeze caressed her hair, which grew longer over the months.

"I'm not mad at you." She replied flatly, not looking at him.

He holds her by the shoulders, letting her face him. "I know you are."

She sighed. "I'm worried about you, Jae. I swear I am."

"W-What?" He replies, putting his hands in the pockets of his jeans.

"I know you're having a hard time, but please think about the others as well. It's not easy to see someone like you being burdened and everything, please. You're probably tired of hearing the same thing over and over from me, but I'm really worried."

미안해 보잘 것 없는 내 이 욕심과 이기심을 용서해줘
Sorry, forgive my unworthy selfishness and greed

He looks at her for a while, studying her concerned look, then smiles. "You don't need to worry anymore, Heejin. I'm okay now."

She stays silent for a while, looking at a group of kids flying kites.

"Yes, I guess I overworked a bit," he explained. "It's difficult, you know. Studying and... training is not easy. But I can do it. As time passes by, it gets easier. It's all because of you guys encouraging me and all."

Jaejoong looks at the Han River sunset, then at Heejin, who smiles back at him.

"I know I can do this." He whispered.

She beams at him. "I know you can. You're worth it."

"I'm nervous, Jihye." Heejin whispered. Thankfully, she made it on time for her to prepare her report. The cue cards were shaking in her hands and it wasn't the first time she did a report.

Jihye hands her a bottle of water. "Calm down, Miss Son. It's okay. I know you do well in these reports, so there's nothing for you to be worried about. Just stay calm and focus."

Just then, they both hear her phone ring. Jihye gets the phone for her hands gives it to Heejin. She thanks Jihye and answers it.

"Hello? Son Heejin speaking."

"Hey~ it's Jaejoong here." When she heard his voice, she immediately calmed down. "It's your report day, right?"

She sighs and takes a break from preparing. "Yes, and I'm really nervous about it! I mean, I did finish it but I haven't read it thoroughly and I have some paperwork waiting back at the office and my parents are inviting me to dinner later and--"

"Calm down, Heejin, calm down." He replies, slightly laughing. "I know you can do it. You always aced reports at class, as far as I can remember."

"Thanks, Jae." She smiled. "Anyway, I better do some last-minute reading before I start."

"Sure thing." He replies. "I'll call you again later, is that okay?"

"No problem."

"So, bye for now. Son Heejin, hwaiting! You're worth it!"
