Chapter One

A Piece of Life

Sitting by the glass window I began staring at the people outside – some who are holding an umbrella and some running away to get shelter while having their head covered with a piece of newspaper or their bag.

The door of the coffee shop keep opening and closing as people constantly walks in for shelter – sitting down for a cup of coffee while waiting for the rain to stop.

Un-amused about what’s going on outside I pick up my teaspoon and stir on my hot chocolate. Pulling the teaspoon out of the hot chocolate I place it back down on the plate taking a sip of the still warm chocolate.

Suddenly my eyes caught a sight of a certain person on the street. That person was wearing full black, black t-shirt and black track pants. What caught my attention wasn’t what that person was wearing it’s she didn’t bother to cover herself under the heavy rain. Isn’t she cold? I start to question myself seeing how she only wore one layer of clothing in such a gloomy wet weather. The girl finally reach to the door of the coffee shop, she reach the door handle pushing the glass door open. She was soaking wet, her shoulder length hair was drench in rain that strains of hair was stuck onto her face. Her foot steps in and already made a puddle of water. She looks around the small coffee shop like she’s looking for someone. Her eyes stop at the direction where I’m sitting at. Letting the door go, the door swings back in place. The girl moves walking her way towards me. I don’t think I know her. Our eyes meet for a moment before she completely walks pass and sat herself on the table behind.

Our backs are face-to-face – I can even smell the scent of rain. I heard no conversation from the back of my head. I look outside of the glass window seeing nobody held an umbrella anymore. Ah… the rain stopped. Looking around the coffee shop I see some people starts leaving from their seat.

All of a sudden the coffee shop went back to being its peaceful and silent self.

“Why do you want to breakup?”

A slightly husky voice said.

“Amber, it’s over. My family will never accept our relationship. There’s no point.”

Another voice of a girl said.

There was another moment of silent between the couple and here I am eavesdropping on the two waiting to hear what the first girl, Amber is going to say.

“Do you still love me?”

Amber said with a tint of sadness.

Once again the two went silent. Even though I couldn’t see the two but I can feel the tension from the back of my head.

“I’m sorry Amber.”

The second girl said. The next second I could see a girl walk pass heading to the door. I couldn’t see the girl’s face but her back gives me that she’s a beautiful girl.

I heard sniffing noises from the back – Is she crying? It was very soft but still audible for me to hear.

I dug my hand in my school bag ruffling at the objects inside until I feel a soft packet what seems like tissue. I finish the remaining hot chocolate before standing up. I held onto the packet of tissue hesitating whether I should stick my nose in other people business. But in the end I still place the packet of tissue beside the girl.

Sensing the packet of tissue being place on the table in front. The girl name Amber lifts her head up and turns over. Our eyes meet and I see her redden eyes from crying.

Seeing how she was found crying she quickly wipes the remaining tears off her face.

“Sorry I overheard.” I apologized. I gave her a soft smile like some kind of support. She only stared at me before she mutters a “Thanks.”

I gave her another soft smile before heading out the coffee shop.

The rain has stop and the sky is clear – I could see the sun coming out again as the sunlight shone blinding my eyes. Closing my eyes I inhale the smell of the after rain. It smelled funny but I love it, it gives off a refreshing feel.

I walk back to the tall building across from the coffee shop. Entering the building a buff security guard stood by the entrance and I gave the security guard a bow. He gave me back the same bow with a big smile on his face.

“You are such a hard working trainee, Soojung.”

“Well I got to train hard to become like my seniors.”

I reply him back while I dug out the trainee card in my school bag swiping it through the machine. The gate opens after I swipe my card and I proceed walking in waving goodbye to the security guard.

I must admit I’m one lucky girl to be able to become a trainee in Korea’s biggest agency, SM Entertainment. Who would have thought shopping on the street could lead up an opportunity to become a celebrity? My manager, Junho scouted me while shopping in the district with my mum. At that time the offer was refused as I was only in elementary school. But the offer was still on and my mum promised me I could decide when I’m older.

As I got older I start to have interest in the entertainment industry. I would often sing and dance to songs from my favorite singers. I sometimes even act out a commercial scene on TV. And that was when I have decided to take the offer of becoming a trainee at SM. It was more like a trial and error thing. I didn’t know what might it lead to but I want to give it a shot. Worst of all I’ll just quit and go back to being a normal school girl. And so here I am on my third year of training.

First year was really tough, I was only 12 years old and as a kid I had to deal with long hours of training and balancing it with school. The trainings slowly start to affect my studies as my grade continuously to drop. I even had a parent meeting just to talk about it. I can’t remember how I got through those tough times despite how much I cried wanting to give up but I didn’t and I’m glad I didn’t give up.

Second year was a lot better – I finally got used to the lifestyle and even learn how to balance training and studies. I even got to shoot a commercial for the Clean & Clear product. I got a little bit of fame amongst my friends and relatives.

I walk straight to the locker room and dump my school bag inside my locker before heading to the dance studio for another dance lesson. Right when I step foot in the dance studio I could hear lots of chattering like usual.

“Hey Soojung I heard we’re going to have a new dance instructor starting from the next lesson. I just wish our new dance instructor ignores me as much as he or she could.”

My best friend Sulli jump from behind almost scaring me. I chuckled seeing she rolled her eyes. Sulli is never interested in dancing, she’s already an actress but the company just wants to broaden her skills to dancing as well.

Every trainee will go through the process of getting train in dancing, singing and acting but it will be one out of the three that you will focus more on.

As for myself if any chance comes up either dancing, singing or acting I will accept it no matter what.

Suddenly everyone quiet up as our dance instructor Rosanna walks in.

“Guys as you’ve all heard today is my last lesson before I leave to Japan. There will be a new dance instructor to replace my lessons. I especially selected her and I’m sure everyone is going to like her. Alright let’s begin our last class together.” Rosanna clap her hands together and starting the music up. Honestly I will miss Rosanna, I have taken her class for half a year and she really taught me a lot and very helpful whenever I’m troubled. I don’t know if I can like the new instructor like I did for Rosanna.

The music played and we began doing the usual warm-ups.

The lesson was especially hard today, probably because it’s the last lesson from Rosanna so she made it challenging. I look over the dance floor and saw almost everyone had trouble keeping up to the right beat. I guess the only one that could probably do it was Kai. He’s known as the dancing machine amongst the trainees. I then look over at Sulli who is right next to me. I laughed. She totally tangled herself up.

The lesson ended and most of us here felt empty knowing that we wouldn’t be able to see Rosanna anymore. So in the end the students made Rosanna treat us drinks as a goodbye present.

I look over to the side and immediately hit myself. I forgot my water bottle. Just when I was about to snatch Sulli’s bottle since she didn’t even sweated I was poke by an item. Turning my head I saw the face of another friend of mine, Suho.

“Here, take this.” He hand me over an unopened water bottle. I gave him a soft smile before taking the bottle in hand. As usual he gave me his warm smile as I took the bottle from him.

The only male trainee I’m really close with is Suho. He always gives me a big brother feel as he takes care of me a lot. Sulli even once made a joke that he likes me but I immediately deny the possibility of that since he sees me as a little sister.

After school I went to the company for the dance lesson class. I was still dressed in my school uniform. Since I’m a little early I came back to the usual coffee shop that I always go. Waiting in the queue I took out my wallet and dug out the exact money for a sandwich. While I was counting the money I saw a familiar person walking pass. By instinct I turn to look for that person and only saw the back. That person was dressed in full black – black t-shirt and baggy track pants. It reminds me of that person, Amber that I happen to eavesdrop on her conversation with her girlfriend. But it can’t be her because this person has short hair.

I went back to counting my money and when I was in front of the line I ordered my favorite chicken and mayo sandwich.

I ate the sandwich while walking into the company building. Once again the security guard greeted me nicely and he gave me another fighting shout like usual.

Walking in the dance studio and once again it is noisy as ever. Suddenly I felt something hitting real hard on my left shoulder that I almost lost my balance. I look up at the person who bumps into me.

“I’m sorry are you alright?”

It…was her…Amber. What is she doing here? A new trainee?

“Ah it’s you!” She said again with a big smile on her face. She took a step back and gave me a bow. What was that?

"Thank you for your tissue the other day.” She flashed a dorky smile.

“No worries. Are you a new trainee? How come I never seen you before?” I look at her from head to toe. She had very short hair, boyish cut and wearing black. It reminds me that the person I saw at the coffee shop earlier might be her. I wonder why she cut her hair?

Just before she tried to open to answer the question Rosanna came in. I thought it’s the new instructor teaching?

“Alright class today I will introduce you the new dance instructor from LA. Amber please come to the front.”

Hearing the familiar name I quickly turn my head to the boyish girl who I was just talking a minute ago. Amber smiled at me and quickly ran to the front where Rosanna stood.

“Hi everyone I’m Amber. I am the new dance instructor taking over Rosanna’s classes. I just came from LA so I don’t know Korea well. Please treat me well.” She said with an imperfect accent. She just came from LA? And she already has a girlfriend?

My mind was telling me that how could it be possible unless she’s a player.

“I’m sure everyone would get along with Amber well. Although she’s young but she has really great skills.” Rosanna patted Amber’s shoulder giving her a confident smile.

After a short introduction Rosanna left the dance studio leaving the class to Amber. And the lesson begins with a five minutes of warm-up. My eyes kept staring at the boyish girl’s back wondering what kind of person she is. If I didn’t know she just looks like one of our male trainee. While I was dozing off the warm-up was done and she began doing some grooving moves and everyone followed.

“Alright this is the dance I choreograph for today’s class. Just a moment, I’ll show you how it’s like.” She said to the entire class. She took the controller and play a track that I don’t even know the title. When the beat of her song comes she start dancing. Wow she is really good. Her style is so much alike Rosanna except that Amber’s style is both soft yet powerful. Everyone was stunned by Amber’s dancing even Sulli who is not interested in dancing had her jaw drop. The choreography was short but amazing. Everyone clap their hands and was excited to learn the dance.

The dance was actually harder than what it looks. The moves aren’t hard the hardest is the timing. It’s only been ten minutes of the lesson and I was drench in sweat. I look over to my right to see Sulli smiling like she really enjoys the class.

“What’s your name?” I heard her voice and I realize she’s no longer at the front.

“Sulli.”

Watching the two as Amber slowly go through each move breaking it in little steps for Sulli. Sulli seem to concentrate a lot more than attending Rosanna’s classes. I guess Rosanna never notice how Sulli slacks off during her classes. wide open and laughed, jumping up and down when she understands.

Our eyes meet for a second and I quickly went back to concentrating on the dance. I felt her eyes on me as she watches how I practice each move. I glance back at her and she gave me a nod. Does that mean I did great?

She continues to walk around guiding and giving comments to students. The hour class seems to end faster as everyone drops down on the floor sweated. Amber gave a big compliment to everyone – she didn’t leave the dance studio and instead was just chatting with the trainees. She’s getting along with everyone quickly. Usually Sulli is the first to leave class but here she is mingling in the crowd of boys chatting along with Amber. I guess she really like the new instructor. I continued practicing a bit more as I’m not satisfied when I saw myself in the mirror. A little frustrated as I kept getting my feet tangled up in the steps.

“Try practicing it slowly a few times before doing it in the normal speed.” I recognize the voice that belongs to Amber. Her voice is unique and easy to tell apart. She stood beside and did the count while slowly going through the steps with me. After repeating a few times I finally got the hang of it and she speed up the counting. Each time it was a beat faster until the normal speed.

“See? You can do it.” She grinned.

“Thanks.” I muttered.

“No worries that’s my job.”

She left and went back to the crowd and I think I heard them talking about food. I look at her from the side – somehow I want to get to know her more.
