Who Can You Trust?
Madness, Regrets and Secrets“A flawed masterpiece.” Sehun repeated, slightly cynical with the answer he received. “I hate how you could never give me straight answers.”
“Trust me; it’s better to not know him that well.” The healer leaned his head on his right hand as he adjusted his glasses with his left. “I remember how easy my life was when I believed he was insane.”
“You mean, he’s normal?”
“Normal is never the right word to describe him.” He chuckled deliriously. “He’s not insane, but he has the power to make other people insane. One of his annoying traits, actually.”
“Can I trust him then?”
Lay’s eyebrows cringed in suspicion. His heart almost sunk to his stomach when those words reached his ears.
“Can you trust me to provide you with the correct answer?” He stood up, moving closer to the spirit. The sad thing was, he knew all too well how the human mind worked. Luhan was pulling the strings; he could almost smell it in the air. “What did he say to you?”
The spirit wavered as he stared into his eyes. It was like his couldn’t hide. He couldn’t even disappear into thin air. The way Lay looked at him was like he was searching for answers not from his mouth, but from every corner of his brain.
She shut the door on them with a slam, running to the corner of her room. The girl crouched down with her arms flung over her head in a protective manner. Her body shook in fear whilst a chain of incoherent mutterings escaped her lips.
“What’s going on?” She asked herself as she stared at her own two hands in panic. Her hands then covered her ears tightly. Endless thoughts rampaged that pitiful mind of hers, pushing her to the edge of her sanity.
“I won’t hurt you, I promise.” A sincere voice croaked out of nowhere. Her eyes dashed around the room, searching for a figure of some sort; however, not even a shadow could be seen. The deafening thump in her chest was drowning out all her logical thoughts, making her mind haywire.
“You’re not real! No one e-else can h-hear you! W-what are you?!” She gasped breathlessly, curling into a smaller ball, feeling more insignificant by the second.
“They can’t hear me because they’re not special like you. We’ve been talking for weeks now, have I hurt you during this time?”
She pondered for awhile. All logic fled from her mind whilst she tried to comprehend the situation.
“W-why can’t you leave me alone?” She was afraid. Of course the thought that she was insane had been possible to her, but she didn’t want to believe it. It was something she couldn’t accept. She would rather believe in angels, ghosts and even fairies to convince herself that she was still mentally stable.
“I’m here to protect you.” The voice simply answered, and she prayed that she could trust it.
“Are you some sort of angel?”
“Sadly, no.” The voice merely giggled at her question. “Think of me as a friend.”
“Well, friend. Do you have a name?” She was sceptical, but she only had two choices; to admit that she was mentally instable, with the possibility that she’d be diagnosed with schizophrenia, or to trust the voice and believe in all the wonderful fairytales the world had taught her. The latter seemed more assuring to her, of course.
Silence daunted in the room and she began to wonder if it was just her vivid imagination playing tricks on her. Terror enveloped her body, engulfing her into the world of darkness and despair.
Thankfully, the voice returned.
“My name is Kai. Call me Kai.”
“I’m going to ask this one more time. What did that nutcase say to you?” Lay’s eyes widened as they gawked intensely at the spirit, observing his every motion. Whatever it was, he knew it wouldn’t be good.
“He said he would be able to make me breathe again.”
“Wha-” Lay almost collapsed onto the floor if he didn’t hold onto the desk for support. He felt his insides boil. “I thought I already told you, I would look into it!”
“But Luhan said-”
“Don’t listen to him! I’m the doctor, not him!”
The spirit could feel a large blue aura emitting from his brother’s body. His aura had increased tenfold, waving erratically in the air showing how infuriated he was. Never did he anticipate that the healer was capable of such level of anger.
“Hyung, I've waited for a year now! He said you’ve even tried to bring the dead back to life, so why is it so hard for you to bring me back to life?!”
Suddenly, Lay’s beloved unicorn appeared beside him as if it served as a warning to the spirit.
“Sehun,” Lay managed to say through his gritted teeth. “You’re not dead yet. I’ll find a way. I’m trying my best here. Never think about bringing the dead back to life and most importantly, never listen to Luhan.”
The spirit’s shoulders drooped in hopelessness. He was so eager to breathe again that he’d forgotten all the effort Lay had put into trying to help him. Sehun nodded despondently before vanishing into the air, possibly to another dimension.
“I need to have a word with Luhan tonight.” He sighed whilst his body crumpled onto the heartless flooring. His eyes appeared lifeless, leaving them as hollow chestnut orbs. Slowly, he clasped his hands together whilst his head hung low, trying his best to calm himself.
The unicorn closed up the distance between them. He looked at it with a sorrowful gaze once he felt a shadow hovering over him.
“Do you know what the worst part is?” Lay asked, earning no response from the mystical creature. “The worst part is that Luhan wants to be insane when he's not. Scariest thing is that his acting is so believable that he can even fool all the psychiatrists in the world. Our Luhan is a crazy genius.”
