Pulling The Strings

Madness, Regrets and Secrets

(A/N: This would probably be the only chapter with a POV in it. This fanfic is actually based on the following italic text, which I wrote from Wordlust. Since I wrote in first person, I didn’t feel like changing it.)

‘Her’ POV

He’s not there, not really. No one is ever there. It’s kind of funny, but kind of sad at the same time. We’ve never met, yet my brain continues to stubbornly draw out your features explicitly as if I could see you. Sadly, you’re nothing but a figment of my imagination based on the things you've told me. (At least, that was what I’ve been told.) You’re nothing but a voice; a voice which seem to linger at the edge of my ear, constantly nagging at me with moral lessons.

My heels clicked on the pavement whilst I walked this empty road. A warm breeze caressed my cheeks, making me wonder; was that you? My mind went wild as I tried to picture you beside me. At the corner of my vision, I noticed a tall figure striding beside me with a bicycle. A fresh, alluring scent reached my nose. Lavender, I supposed. Suddenly you stood still and I followed suit. You flashed me a radiant smile, almost blinding my eyes. It made me realise one thing; you were real. You were very real despite everything I’ve been told.

//End POV

-

She stared at him admiringly under the enchanting, evening sun. His image was slightly faded, but she could still see his tanned complexion. Her fingers made its way to his face, but she couldn’t touch him; just a gentle breeze slithered across her skin.

He gave her a sheepish grin. His almond shaped eyes complimented his well defined nose and plump lips, making him one of the finest men she had ever laid eyes on.

“Hi.” His head lowered shyly, automatically placing a smile on her lips.

“You’re real.” She breathed out a relieved sigh with gleaming eyes. “I’m not insane. I can see you.” Her head tilted to the side whilst she watched how he scratched his head nervously.

The clouds were rolling in, covering the navy blue sky as well as the stars. It was like nature was trying to tell him something; as if the sky was trying to reflect his future - unclear and filled with uncertainty. He could hear the echoes of the crying spirits, pleading him to step into things. They could sense a series of misfortune leading its way to their supposedly safe household.

Lay released a deep sigh, once again finding himself in Luhan’s room, waiting for his return.

“It’s nice,” the voice that irritated him to the core, said. “To have someone waiting for you, it’s nice.”

The healer turned his head to face none other than Luhan. The elder boy stretched his body up to reach for the silver bar above his head. He pulled his body up so his legs could cling onto the bar, allowing his body to drop so he was upside down. Lay simply stared at him with lazy eyes whilst Luhan flashed him a giddy grin.

“Why can’t you just control my mind and make me like you, for once.”

Luhan shrugged, blinking innocently at his friend.

“But I like you the way you are, my friend. It’s not interesting if I have to use mind control.” He giggled like a five-year-old. “But you didn’t want to ask me that, really.”

Lay exhaled a breath that he’d suppressed the moment Luhan stepped into the room; that was how cautious he was of the oddball.

“Why did you tell Sehun that you could make him breathe again?”

“I have a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was to get you off my case. Did you have fun talking to him?” He asked, that grin never leaving his face. A small incomprehensive murmur was heard from Lay, but the elder didn’t bother to process the words. It was most likely to be curses.

“Stop your stupid acts and be serious for one moment.” The healer snarled, to which Luhan merely chuckled.

“Oh, I’m very serious, my friend.” He gave him a toothy smile before swinging on the metal bar like an energetic monkey.

“Why Sehun? You know better than anyone, all of us have problems in this house.”

“It’s sad,” he said with a frown. “It’s very, very sad.”

Lay’s eyebrows rose as they furrowed slightly, confusion plastered across his face. The sight simply amused Luhan, but the healer noticed how grave his face remained.

“There are people in this world that wants to die, but can’t even if they try. My friend, you know this better than anyone, right? Your sister’s story, it is also very tragic.”

The healer could feel, almost hear, his heart clench in agony. He no longer had the courage to look at the lunatic in the eyes, hence diverting his gaze to the floor. A lump could be felt at the back of his throat, disabling his ability to talk. Luhan always pulled the right strings, always. Lay didn’t even need to tell him about his story, he knew without even trying.

“But then there’s people like Sehun, who strives to live again. It was saddening; watching him guard over his own body, watching how people visited him, yet he couldn’t recognise a single face. Only felt the emotions he would’ve felt if he knew who they were.”

“But you must watch your words. What capabilities do you have to say that you can make him breathe again?”

“I’m more capable than you,” the oddball simply replied. “You may be ‘observant’ in other people’s eyes, not in mine.”

“Enlighten me.”

“Sehun isn’t ill.”

“I know.”

“He’s under a curse.”

That silenced the healer. It was true; he couldn’t find the cause for why Sehun’s soul left his body. He wasn’t dead, nor was he ill. There was nothing on him that would suggest that he was under a curse. Furthermore, it wouldn’t make sense. Sehun was a mere human; average in all aspects. There was no reason why someone would go to the extent of placing a curse on him.

“You’re too careless as a doctor, Dr Zhang.” Although Luhan was dangling upside down, Lay could still identify that smug smile on his face.

“And you don’t know your limit.”

“But you can’t stop me.”

Author's Note: I just realised a mistake in my own poster >> I mispelt fiance >> sorry Baozi-ge. You'll come in next chapter to make up for it~

And a little clarification. I think people think that the girl with Kai is a separate story and has little relevance to Luhan with everyone else, but I assure you, they are connected~ This gets updated a lot quicker, because it's a lot shorter...Twist and Turn will also be updated soon for those who thinks I've given up on that fic XD

Like this story? Give it an Upvote!
Thank you!
ShadowYin
sorry for not updating, but if you guys like this fic, can I recommend a new new called 'the revolutionists'? a lot of the ideas are really similar~

Chapter 12: This is so very different from sehun and luhan's past side story, I just can't get used to it! I guess reading thay first wasn't a goos idea, I've been mislead by my own take of the prequel hahaha. Sehun and Luhan's affection and relationship from the prequel seems almost non-existent here, I mean the bond they had. The last part was an emotional scene and I feel so disoriented starting this story as if I were back to zero. I wonder what led Luhan to suffer tenfold that he had become(or made himself, rather) so detatched. What he and sehun had gone through for each other in the past makes my hunhan heart so sad to see Luhan almost so estranged. Curious to see more of this! Even. Though a lot of things don't match up. I will wait whenever. The plot twists are interesting, I couldn't give them up.

And I'm already a little curious who the woman Sehun seems to think his mother is anyway lol.

This is actually super intriguing. I'm usually not a fan of fics with OCs but this is quite exceptional. The mystery involved and the new take on powers are refreshing. Oddball Luhan is the best as always. I'm wondering if the sidestory/special chapter is also related to this storyline. I'm also curious about any pairings.

Chapter 11: OMGGGGG. Just when I thought I finally understood something, I was mindf*cked again. WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO US READERS, YOU SADIST LITTLE AUTHOR. But the girl, Miya, obviously cares a lot about Sehun still if she's still visiting him. Perhaps whatever he did hasn't reached her knowledge yet. A million of possibilities.

Yin, just a heads up, you have a rather awkward typo in the foreword. "Lay have been waiting patiently..." :p

Chapter 10: I know where his sister is coming from, but won't hurt her to be a little more grateful (if not that, more understanding). Just saying. Poor Lay, all he wanted was his family.
