CLASSROOM

Naeun was early to class. She picked a window seat to place her cup of coffee and laptop neatly in front of her. It wasn’t long before the room was filled with nervous freshmen.

Student #1: Is that our professor?

Student  #2: No way. She’s too young!

Student #1: Then why is she just sitting up there?

            What kind of freshman would have the nerve?

Student #2: That one?

Student #1: …

            Either way, I don’t have a good feeling about her.

Classmate #2: Me too.

Naeun shifts to look at who they’re talking about. A slim girl in a bomber jacket and ripped jeans sits with her feet up on what looks to be the professor’s podium. She looks bored.

Bomi (shouts): Hey! HEY!

The whole class stares as the girl hops onto one of the desks.

Bomi: Sorry to interrupt the chatter… I’m Yoon Bomi, your soon-to-be favorite junior on campus.

            I’ll be expecting some respect and a little bit of fun around here so let’s try to get along, little freshmen.

Professor: Ahem…

Bomi: Ah… Professor Park. Long time no see!

Professor: Find a seat.

Bomi: Yessir!

Bomi slides into the empty spot next to Naeun.

Bomi (tries to whisper): Hi.

Naeun: …

Bomi: What’s your name?

Naeun: … Naeun.

Bomi: I’m Bomi.

Naeun: I know.

Bomi (shocked): How do you know?

Naeun: You told the whole class.

Bomi: I did?!

Naeun: Uh, yes.

Bomi: I’m a little forgetful. Or stupid. Whichever you prefer.

Naeun doesn’t answer. She tries to focus on the rest of the lesson but she can feel Bomi staring at her.

*SNAPBACK*

Eunji: Wait a second! Were you attracted to her during this whole thing?

Naeun: Probably.

Hayoung: To the point where you had your breath taken away and you couldn’t focus?

Naeun: I was focusing… but it was still distracting to have an attractive girl staring at me. 

Naeun looks somewhat uncomfortable so Hayoung lets it go.

Hayoung: Continue the story.

*BACK TO FLASHBACK*

Bomi: Hey, are you doing anything tonight?

Naeun: … I don’t know.

Bomi: You should come to the party at Cube Tower. It won’t be too wild so it’s a good place for freshmen to start.

Naeun: Okay.

Bomi: So I’ll see you there?

Naeun: I don’t know.

Bomi: You like being mysterious, don’t you?

Naeun: Not really.

Bomi: Then I’ll be waiting.

Bomi smiles, swings her backpack over her shoulder, and stalks off out the door. Naeun watches her go.

CUBE TOWER

That night Naeun finds herself unintentionally eavesdropping on a conversation.

Ilhoon: Why are you just standing here?

Bomi: I’m waiting.

Ilhoon: For whom?

Bomi: Just some freshman.

Ilhoon (scoffs): You invited a freshman?

Bomi: A hot freshman.

Ilhoon: A hot freshman?

Bomi: She’s here!

            She came. She’s here.

Ilhoon: … you’re right.

            She is hot.

Bomi: And she came alone…

Ilhoon: Are you sure she’s into girls because if she’s not—

Bomi: You better stop talking.

Ilhoon eyes her warily. After no real response, he shrugs and walks away into the crowd. Bomi rushes forward to meet Naeun who steps out of the shadows.

Bomi: You came!

Naeun: Yeah… Wasn’t much to do in my apartment.

Bomi: Apartment? So you aren’t in the dorms?

Naeun: I have some close friends I live with.

Bomi: Close friends?

Naeun: Family friends.

Bomi: Interesting…

*SNAPBACK*

Eunji: You talked about us?!

Hayoung: It sounds like she was suspicious.

Naeun: Huh? What would she be suspicious about?

Eunji: She didn’t know your relationship status or anything, right?

Naeun: Oh. Well, uh, I don’t think she thought either of you were my… significant other.

Hayoung: But she was worried. The girl she called hot is living with strangers!

Eunji: Is this just a stretch?

Hayoung: Doesn’t sound like it to me.

            It seems like she’s already overly jealous.

Naeun: Okay, well we don’t know for sure.

            Maybe she was actually just curious.

Eunji: Sure.

Hayoung: Yeah, sure.

*BACK TO FLASHBACK*

Bomi: Want to go grab drinks?

Naeun: I don’t drink.

Bomi: Good, because I don’t drink either.

Naeun: Really?

Bomi: Well… I drink but I don’t like to.
