His Girl

Heart to Heart

After several days, Ahreum finally returned to school. Luckily, she did not show any signs of trauma and behaved as she usually would.   “How are you feeling?” Hyunmi asked, crossing her arms over Ahreum’s desk.   “I’m fine. My Mom took me to see some therapists but they said I’m fine,” Ahreum said, managing her biggest smile. “I probably won’t be trying to find a boyfriend anytime soon though.”   Hyunmi laughed, feeling herself tense up when a familiar voice appeared in the classroom. She watched Ahreum’s gaze shift to the door, a grin immediately accompanying her.   “Can’t say the same for you though. Your future boyfriend just entered the room,” Ahreum said teasingly, playfully nudging Hyunmi’s arms.    “He… He’s not—”   “I may have been unconscious when the boys appeared, but others told me what happened. It sounds heroic, like a fairytale romance,” Ahreum said dreamily.   “Y-You’re exaggerating,” Hyunmi stammered, holding the greatest urge not to turn around and look at him. Lately, her eyes had automatically sought him out in a crowd, always settling on him whenever either one of them entered the room. Maybe it was an old habit, but only now did she take notice of it. She was always looking for Woohyun.   “I bet he wouldn’t have done it for anyone else,” Ahreum added right as the bell rang.   Hyunmi brushed her words off by swatting a hand at her. The moment she turned to return to her seat, she caught Woohyun staring at her. Her heart did a little flip, satisfied she wasn’t the only one crazy enough to always steal secret glances at him.   “I see Ahreum finally made her grand return. How’s she doing?” Woohyun asked, always leaning his chair against her desk for some small talk while Mr. Park entered.   “Really well. No trauma whatsoever.”   “That’s good.” He looked like he was about to say something else, but was shut up when Mr. Park wrote something on the board.   Sports Day Festival   “It’s that time of the year where every class will participate in several competitions. The winning class will get free coupons to a ramen restaurant for a whole year!” Mr. Park spoke with so much excitement that it was a little sad to see no one cheer along with him.    “Won’t that make us sick of ramen?” Sungyeol loudly asked the question everyone was internally thinking of.   “Well, you don’t have to go there every day,” the teacher said.   “Then what’s the point of a year long free supply?” Kibum added, really testing the teacher’s patience.    Luckily, their homeroom teacher was known to be one of the most patient people in school. He smiled and pointed a finger at the board again. “We will need two representatives. Any volunteers?”   Some heads immediately turned to Woohyun and Hyunmi’s direction, entrusting them to reprise their roles after the school festival event.   Woohyun gave her look, seeing the reluctance written on her face. “Watch me be a proper knight this time.”   Hyunmi blinked in confusion, not given the chance to ask him anything when he already shot a hand in the air to get the teacher’s attention.   “I think Sungyeol should do it,” he declared.   “What? Why me?”   “Because you owe us a favor,” Woohyun replied, a clear threat behind his benign smile.    Sungyeol gulped. He did feel responsible for not stopping Hyunmi from going to the group date, and he felt extra pressured because he knew Woohyun wouldn’t like it but had let it happen anyway. He had no choice.   “Fine. I’ll do it.”   Woohyun grinned, turning to Hyunmi to fish for a compliment. “Good?”   “Very. You are now promoted to whatever rank is above knight,” Hyunmi said, fake knighting him by tapping two fingers on both his shoulders.   “What rank is above knight?”   “I don’t know. Prince?”   Woohyun laughed. “Are you asking me to be your prince?”   Hyunmi flinched, immediately retracting her hand back. She kept a nervous smile on her face, not expecting that one to backfire. She quickly averted her eyes to the front where Sungyeol and somehow Kibum were appointed to be in charge.   “Okay, so we have already obtained the list of sport events. Now we’ll determine the participants for each event,” Sungyeol said.   “And because we know you’re all reluctant to volunteer, we’ll do a lucky draw,” Kibum said, earning a disappointed awe from his classmates. He was already folding the last name before dropping the rolled up paper in a small jar.    “We’ll choose the participants for tug of war first.” Sungyeol took a peek at the paper. He mouthed something to Kibum who took a new paper.   “Hey! No fair! I’m sure your name was written there,” Seulyi protested.   “True, first participant is Sungyeol,” Kibum wrote his name on the board.   “Second is Seulyi,” Sungyeol childishly wrote her name as well as some sort of revenge.   Seulyi frowned, but supposed tug of war was better than the other games.   Kibum opened another paper. “Third is Ahreum. Fourth is Woohyun.”   “I don’t want my hands to get rough though,” Woohyun called out, trying to wring his way out.   “Use lotion,” Kibum said, not caring about his friend’s unnecessary concern. But soon he faced the same dilemma when his own name was called.   “Second game is the three legged race,” Sungyeol said, unrolling a paper to reveal the first participant. “Oh, it’s Myungsoo.”   The classroom was immediately filled with feminine gasps as nearly all the female students raised their hand to volunteer themselves. Even Seulyi had joined in, hoping Myungsoo wouldn’t notice her amidst the crowd. They even began to appeal to Kibum and Sungyeol to get chosen.   “I’m really bad at this game though,” Myungsoo said, surprised why there were so many volunteers. It wasn’t like he could bring them to victory.   “That’s okay. I’m good at it,” a girl said.   “Me too! Please, choose me! I’d die if someone else got paired with him,” another one dramatically shouted.   “I don’t mind participating twice,” even Seulyi tried.   Kibum held a hand up to silence the room. “We’re doing this the fair way.”   Sungyeol picked up a paper and showed it to Kibum. They both raised an eyebrow, intrigued by this development. At the count of three, they both called out the name of Myungsoo’s partner.   “Hyunmi!”   Her eyes widened, almost feeling herself fall off her chair. Hyunmi was silently praying she’d be able to peacefully cheer from the sidelines, not to participate. Maybe Myungsoo’s fangirls could go berserk and protest on her behalf.   “Oh…” The fangirls calmly sang instead, as if peace was brought back to earth. “If it’s Hyunmi, I don’t mind her being paired with Myungsoo.”   “Yeah, me too.”   “Me three.”   Hyunmi frowned. This was not what she expected. “Why aren’t you guys against this?”   “Because everyone knows you’re Woohyun’s girl anyway,” Ahreum answered, and everyone religiously nodded in agreement.   Hyunmi pressed her lips together, afraid to look at Woohyun when her face had probably reddened again. She knew that everyone practically considered them a couple, but she didn’t think it went to this extent.   “Well, how about Myungsoo and I switch then?” Woohyun suggested, making the girls squeal. “I mean, if everyone knows her as my girl, it wouldn’t make sense for her to be with some other guy.”   Hyunmi shot him a glare, praying he would stop playing along to their scenarios. How was her heart supposed to survive when the words “my girl” directly came out of his mouth? Should he really
