School Festival

Heart to Heart

After weeks of all-nighters, going to school on the weekends, and seeing way too much of each other, the day of the school festival finally arrived. As predicted, numerous guests from different schools came to visit wearing their respective school uniforms. Parents and families were allowed to come on the next day. It was divided to prevent too much traffic.   “If you keep working hard, you will get what you’ve always wanted,” Woohyun read a girl’s palm. He was an expert at giving vague, open ended advice that he supposed people wanted to hear.   “What if what I wanted was you?” The girl boldly asked.   Even Hyunmi, who was in charge of reeling in more customers by the door, turned to his table in surprise. She caught her friend staring back at her, panic struck.   “Then you gotta work twice as hard,” Woohyun said with a sheepish chuckle.   The girl seemed satisfied with the answer but remained seated, never taking her hand away from Woohyun’s grip. It was obvious she was taking advantage of him now.   “We charge for extra skinship, you know.” Hyunmi appeared, holding her hand out for the extra cash. She had formed the strategy for Myungsoo, but apparently it worked on her best friend too.   “Oh, sorry, I thought you weren’t dating,” the girl stammered, quickly getting up from the seat, misunderstanding the situation.   “We’re not—”    “If you don’t want people to think we’re dating, then don’t act like a jealous girlfriend.” Woohyun grinned, grabbing her by the elbow to sit beside him.   “I wasn’t,” she mumbled, unconsciously pouting in a way that made Woohyun laugh.   “So, care to have your fortune read again?” He offered instead.   “Won’t it be the same?”   “Try it and you’ll find out.” He asked for her hand.   All Hyunmi could remember was the way he had softly grazed her hand in a manner that rendered her unable to sleep at night. Though he kept his promise and never held anyone else’s hand like that, she wasn’t sure whether it should’ve comforted her this much.   Two new customers walked in at that time and Hyunmi’s eyes sprung open with delight. It was the perfect distraction. “You should try predicting your future with her!”   “What?”   Before he could ask her to elaborate, Hyunmi had already gotten up to greet Hime and Miyu. She led Miyu to Sungyeol’s booth, where he had gotten in character and wore satin sheets all over his head with beaded jewelries and all. Then she grabbed Hime by the shoulder and guided her to the empty seat in front of Woohyun.   “For you, the service will be free of charge,” Hyunmi said. And to give them some privacy, she quickly went to the front door to resume promoting their class.   Yeah, it was better this way. If she could coolly help Hime and Woohyun get together, it would prove that she and Woohyun were just friends. It would make up for all the nonsense Kibum had been spreading in her head and all the misunderstandings that had been caused. She was doing everyone a favor.   “You have a very kind heart,” Woohyun began reading. Despite Hyunmi’s weird request, he didn't treat Hime any differently from his other customers. Besides, he knew of her feelings and was therefore extra careful not to cause any misunderstandings. “This kindness is going to help many people.”   “Really? Help them in what way?” Hime asked.   “Make their life better?”   She stifled a giggle behind her other hand. “Our class is doing a relaxing aromatherapy session. Could that be it?”   “There you go! Making people’s life better, one aromatherapy at a time.” Woohyun snapped his fingers at her, making her laugh. “The aromatherapy must be your idea.”   “How do you know that?”   “You gave me scented candles, it’s not that much of a mystery,” he grinned. And he seriously wondered why a simple grin had the ability to make her all flustered over and over again.    “Did you try it?” she asked shyly.   “I did. It was actually my first time, but you have an excellent sense of smell. White Sands is really nice. I might think of buying one again in the future,” he said. Might even buy one for Hyunmi.   “I’m so glad you liked it! I have a lot of other recommendations for you,” Hime clasped her hands together.   “Maybe you can text me the list sometimes.” Woohyun casually handed his phone to her, having no ulterior motives whatsoever, and still the girl blushed furiously. “Isn’t it weird that you’re the soccer club’s manager for so long and we don’t even have each other’s number?”   Hime pressed her lips together, nodding. She was too elated to form a proper response. After saying a soft thank you, she got up from her seat to get her sister.   “Ahreum, could you please do a reading for virgo and libra?” Sungyeol was busy requesting. He had done it the first time Ahreum demonstrated her skills, but now he wanted Miyu to hear how compatible they both were as well. He ditched his own booth, not minding the long queue waiting for him.    “Oh! These two signs fit together like puzzle pieces,” Ahreum read, always pretending it was her first time reading the signs’ compatibility. Clients loved that. “They will both seek balance and harmony, thus allowing them to see from every perspective in a situation. They have mutual respect and admiration for each other’s individuality. This is the best compatibility I’ve read so far.”   Seulyi grunted and rolled her eyes from behind the cashier. How did even Sungyeol manage to get such a good reading while she and Myungsoo seemed like a mismatch? Except for the secret stash, they had nothing else in common.   “See Miyu? We’re a match made in heaven,” Sungyeol said.   “Looks like it.” She laughed.   Hime was silently watching from the door, deciding not to disturb her sister who was in the midst of her blossoming romance. “Hyunmi, can you tell my sister that I’ll be going first?”    “Sure thing.”   “Oh, and thanks for the free reading. You should come by our class too later. We’re doing aroma therapy,” Hime invited, adding a kind smile that even Hyunmi couldn’t resist.    Once she left, Hyunmi immediately slid into the empty seat beside Woohyun. “I see you’ve exchanged numbers.”   “She said she had a list of scented candles recommendations. I’ll get you one if you want,” he offered.   “I thought you were my fellow frugal friend. You rarely treat anyone w
