Public Confession

By the time they got to the main area outside, the Glee Club was already busy performing. Every member wore a cute uniform that was reminiscent of an ice cream parlor work outfit, in matching red and white stripes and a small hat.   “I can’t see,” Hyunmi said, and everyone was kind enough not to make a comment about her height, feeling a bit sorry when she struggled to stand on her toes. “I’m gonna go to the front.”   She did not wait for the others who had no problems with their vision, and wriggled her way through. She was agile, but not agile enough to avoid a group of guys partying. She accidentally bumped into someone and got soda spilled all over her.   “Sorry!” The blonde guy who was responsible for the crime immediately bellowed, catching her frozen in place as the coke dripped off of her. His eyes fell on her white blouse that began to press against her body, becoming see-through. He blushed and immediately looked away.   Honestly, Hyunmi wasn’t one to easily offer forgiveness when she didn’t know whether the stain would come off or not. She really didn’t want to spend money on a new uniform.   “If something happens to my shirt, you should take responsibility for it,” she said, exerting some humor in her voice despite being dead serious.   “Of course,” the guy said, averting his eyes to the sky.   “It’s rude not to look at the person you’re talking to,” she added because of her annoyance, resting her arms on her hips.   “I think it’d be more rude to openly stare at you when you’re…” The guy glanced at her once, hoping she had noticed, but nope. Her shift in movements exposed more than before.   Hyunmi frowned, following his eyes once, only to realize her bra was practically showing through her wet shirt. Right before she could panic, the guy handed her his own blazer.    “I’m taking responsibility,” he said, still looking away.   “This will get your blazer wet.”   “Can’t be worse than what I did to you,” he said, batting his hands. “Put it on so we can have a proper face to face conversation.”   This made her break into a chuckle as she accepted his offer. The blazer was a different color from theirs. The guy must’ve been a visitor from a different school. She couldn’t help but notice it was about the same size as Woohyun’s. “Thanks.”   “You can hold on to it for the rest of the day. Don’t want you to accuse people of being rude when they look away from your transparent shirt,” the guy teased, and Hyunmi opened in mock offense, even hitting his shoulder like they had been long time friends.   And in the middle of her laughter and what she presumed to be an innocent exchange, she did not realize Woohyun had decided to come after her. He stood still, surprised by the unexpected scene before him. He knew Hyunmi could be friendly with guys, which he did not think much of when the guys were part of their inner circle. But he had never seen this blonde guy before, and to see them casually touching each other like that unsettled him.   “Hyunmi,” he called out, immediately grabbing her by the wrist to break their physical contact. He knew he was crossing the line of casual friendship, but he couldn’t help it. He didn’t know this guy. And what more, why was she wearing that uniform? “What happened?”   “It was my fault,” the blonde guy interrupted. “But all is good now. I have to go back to my friends. See you later.”   “See you!” Hyunmi casually waved at him, and only when he was out of sight did she gasp. “I don’t even know his name! How will I return this blazer?”   “You shouldn’t have worn it in the first place. You could’ve used mine,” Woohyun said, inwardly cursing himself for not thinking of it sooner. Now she’d be occupied trying to find the guy.   It was a clever tactic, actually. Woohyun noticed the guy looking at Hyunmi with interest in his eyes, the same gaze he had noticed in some of their own peers. He was aware of Hyunmi’s attractiveness, one which she herself seemed oblivious to. The number of gifts she got on White Day didn’t convince her of her own popularity. Many guys had shown interest, but she always mistook their amorous attempts for benevolent acts.    Woohyun never said anything about it because everyone at school thought they were dating. It demotivated others from truly pursuing her, thus letting them hide behind the anonymous identity of a secret admirer. He thought it was better that way since none of the guys were good enough for her anyway.   But things were different when a guy from a different school was involved—someone who didn’t know the rumors.   “Look! It’s Sungyeol!” Hyunmi remarked, bouncing a little on her feet that made her seem more childlike in the oversized blazer wrapped around her.   Woohyun hated to admit that he was the slightest bit thankful to the random guy for lending her the blazer. It looked incredibly good on her, and he had the hardest time stopping himself from smiling. He finally forced his gaze off of her and directed it to the stage, just in time to see Sungyeol standing at the center to sing a one line solo.   “Never thought they’d let a newcomer sing,” he remarked.   “If you were the newcomer, I bet they would’ve given you an entire solo,” she said, nudging his arm.    Their friends were one of the few people who knew of his astounding vocal abilities. Hyunmi had joked that she would lose him completely to a bigger group of fangirls if they discovered his voice, so he subconsciously made sure not to sing in front of other girls. He didn’t want her to think she’d ever lose him.   “I’d rather sing for you alone than for an entire crowd,” he said.   “Are you planning on serenading me?” Hyunmi asked, the usual playfulness embedded in her tone.    “I must warn you though,” Woohyun began, naturally playing with the hair that fell over her shoulders. He couldn’t help lowering his voice. “You might totally fall for me if I do that.”   He wasn’t imagining things when she immediately pulled her gaze away from him, as if staring for too long would make her act out of the ordinary. Her reactions were so unusual it made him want to test them even more.   “No way, that’s gonna happen,” she forced a laugh.   “You know better than to taunt me,” Woohyun joked in his usual manner, though a part of him was willing to take on the challenge. He didn’t pursue it when a hand suddenly rested over his shoulder.   “Hello, lovebirds.” Kibum always interrupted during the most crucial moments. “Have you seen the performance or were you too busy flirting?”   “Obviously, the latter,” Maerin butted in
