You All Along

Its You All Along

"You're here." Wheein says with surprise, her lips involuntarily turning into a smile.

Byul stands right in front of her, with a suitcase in hand, and her jacket at the other. "Hi." Byul greets. "I do, still live here, right?" she playfully asks with a smile on her face, acknowledging Wheein's surprise to see her.

That smile that used to make -that makes Wheein's heart jump with excitement.

One would think that she'd get used to seeing it, judging by how long she's known Byul, that somehow her feelings for Byul would become serene after a while, but she still feels like a high school girl seeing her crush every time.

Wheein wasn't able to say a thing.

Because there is Byul, standing right in front of her.

The person she loved so much; the same person who broke her heart and left.

But somehow, Wheein felt like she could finally breathe again seeing Byul, even when her heart was trembling in her presence.

Wheein just stood there in silence with questions bombarding her mind. She wanted to ask her about how she's been; what she's been doing. She wanted to ask if Byul was seeing anyone, or if Byul got back with Yongsun and she didn't know. But instead, she just stood there smiling, trying to catch that breath Byul stole when they first met.

She didn't realize how much she missed Byul until now; all her repressed emotions came crashing back to her in an overwhelming amount.

She remembered Byul saying how she wanted them to last. She remembered the nights she spent with Byul, as if they were the only people in the world. She remembers...and all of a sudden her heart is filled with an intense sense of longing.

Wheein really thought she was over it.

Wheein really thought she was over Byul.

But she was obviously wrong.

Wheein tried her hardest to move on, and in the process she ended up tired and weary - and it frustrates her that one smile from Byul makes her realize that she never really moved an inch.

"Don't I get a hug or something?" Byul asks when the silence lasted long enough to call it comfortable.

"I didn't know you were coming home," Wheein utters, unable to get over her surprise. She thought Byul was scheduled to come back the following day, like what she read on the news. Hyejin also didn't tell her anything, and she's sure she'd tell Wheein if she knew.

"I came home the other day, I didn't want to get bombarded at the airport." Byul explained. She was a little disappointed that Wheein doesn't look like she had any intention to make contact with her; different from what she imagined their first meeting would be.

"So...can I come in?" Byul asks, putting on a smile as she tries to keep a lively face despite feeling like her presence isn't as welcome as she thought.

No matter how Byul looked the same -except for her silver hair- Wheein couldn't help but notice that there was something different about Byul, like somehow the Byul who left that day, wasn't the same person standing in front of her now.

After a moment of trance, "Sorry." Wheein says as she moves aside and lets Byul step in their apartment.

"Let me help you with that." Wheein offers, Byul lets her take her jacket.

"Did you pass by your family's house yesterday?" Wheein asks, trying to make small talk to avoid the awkwardness she feels.

"I did the other day." Byul clarifies. "But I traveled back here yesterday."

"Then where did you stay last night?" Wheein couldn't help but ask, making Byul pause for a minute.

Byul's not sure it would help her case; Wheein might get the wrong idea, but lying to her wouldn't get her anywhere either. "At Yongsun's place."

"Oh." Wheein only nods, trying to fight the urge of asking Byul why.

She doesn't know why she's surprised and disappointed; they did break up because Byul still had feelings for Yongsun. She thought her mind would get it by now, but maybe she just have a stubborn heart.

And it's not like she hasn't been dating Taehyung for a while now.

"I, uh, saw her at the company building, I thought you guys were all there but they told me it is your day off. So, I decided to surprise you two now." Byul felt the need to explain. "Which, reminds me, where is Hyejin?" she asks.

"She's out with Loco." Wheein states, remembering that she was supposed to follow to the bar along with Taehyung. "In fact, I'm gonna go to her now, do you want to come?" Wheein asks.

She's not sure if she'd like Byul to be in the same room as Taehyung, but she would feel bad if she leaves Byul alone in the apartment in her first night back.

"Is Yongsun invited?" Byul asks, Hyejin told her that the three girls go out to hang out most nights but she also knows that Yongsun doesn't like going to such crowded places.

"Its uhm..." Wheein is having a hard time forming words to tell Byul gently that it was supposed to be a double date so Yongsun isn't going. "You can bring unnie, if you like." she says instead.

But Byul sensed Wheein's hesitation so she shakes her head to politely decline Wheein's offer. "I'm going to head to bed if that's okay? I need some rest."

Wheein nods, as she tries to hide the disappointment looming in her chest. "Rest well then."

Byul couldn't believe how anti-climatic their reunion felt like.

All Wheein had to do was grab her purse and go...but how could she? Byul's in the room they used to share. She's back after a long year. She can't even control her feet to leave, its as if her body naturally gravitates towards Byul.

She should check her first before going out. Its the kind thing to do; Wheein reasons to herself.

So she twisted the doorknob and poked her head on Byul's room.

She forgot to knock. She should've knocked. Because now she's awkwardly staring at Byul staring at her and Yongsun's picture.

She should've knocked; maybe then Byul had the chance to hide the picture and Wheein's heart wouldn't be aching in such a familiar way.

Byul seemed to be in a deep thought that Wheein has to clear for Byul to notice her presence.

"Wheein." Byul almost jumps when she saw the younger girl by the door, immediately hiding the picture back to a box. "I thought you left." she comments.

"I was about to..." Wheein trailed off, finding a reasonable excuse why she's in Byul's room. "But I don't know if you already ate, so I came here to ask you." she explained. "You look busy though." Wheein couldn't help but add.

Byul immediately caught on that Wheein saw her with the picture. "You don't have to worry about me, Wheein. I already ate." Byul answers, because its easier to answer that instead of the unspoken question in Wheein's eyes. "You can go have fun, now. I'm sure Hyejin's already waiting for you, along with your dates." she adds with a gentle smile on her face.

Wheein's eyes widen a little at Byul's remark. She was about to ask Byul how she knew but she guessed Byul already texted Hyejin or vice versa.

"Okay then." Wheein says, even though she had the urge to deny that she's going on a date.

She's trying her best to convince herself that she's not doing anything wrong. Why does she even feel guilty? They aren't together anymore.

So what if Byul looks disappointed? The woman was staring at an image of another girl just moments ago.  Its just her imagination, thinking that Byul even cares at all, Wheein concludes.

"I'll be going now." Wheein says before closing the door -ever so slowly, as if she's waiting for Byul to stop her- but was crestfallen when the door shut without another word from Byul.

Suddenly Wheein finds their apartment suffocating, she heads towards the door as she gasps for air. But just when her hand reached the doorknob she heard Byul call her name. "Wheein."

She immediately looks back.

"Can we talk?" Byul hopefully asks.

"About what?" Wheein asks, she could guess what its about but she's not sure why it looks like it can't wait for another time.

Byul looked determined as she made a beeline towards Wheein, her eyes turning softer by every step, in sync with how Wheein's heartbeat turns louder with each step Byul takes. And when Byul is right in front of Wheein, she wraps her arms around her without another word.

Its crazy how Wheein feels like her heart was being held back together. She tugs at the hem of Byul's shirt. "Byul-ah."

Wheein could see that Byul was fighting her tears when she pulled away.

"I missed you." Byul couldn't help but say, making Wheein smile, as if the paincould no longer slip through the cracks of her heart.

"Hey," she says, gently placing her hands on Byul's cheeks. "I missed you too."

Byul took this as an invitation to do what she's been meaning to since she got back to Korea. She took both Wheein's hands from her face, placing it down on her chest, then cupping a hand on Wheein's face and tilting her head as she slowly leans in until both their lips touch.

Wheein's eyes closes blissfully, as they share a kiss full of passion and longing. Wheein slides a hand on Byul's arm with a firm grasp, as if she's trying to get hold of reality.

But when Byul pulled away she's met with a confound look from Wheein's end.

"Please tell me that was a mistake." Wheein begs.

No matter what the kiss made her feel, no matter how much she wanted to do it again, the thought of what the kiss could mean scared Wheein to no end.

"I still love you, Wheein." Byul utters in a hoarse voice, but there was confidence with the way Byul looked at the smaller girl.

Wheein took a step back as she tries to process what she just heard, shaking her head. "You don't know what you're saying."

"I know we decided that we're better off as friends but I love you." Byul confesses. She's been holding back for so long. Wheein obviously have her walls around her, so even though Byul was sure of her feelings for Wheein for quite some time now, she never got the chance to tell her until now. She wanted to say it in person.

Wheein shakes her head in disbelief. "I just saw you staring at a picture of you and Yong-unnie..." Wheein trailed off, silently asking for an explanation. She obviously still can't get over the insecurity that's raking her soul; so Wheein's hesitant to accept Byul's confession just yet.

Byul tucks both her hands on her pocket. "I needed a reminder of how badly I screwed up things..." Byul starts, "And that picture is a reminder that not everybody gets a second chance," Byul explains, her eyes were locked with Wheein's. "Its a reminder that if you ever give us another chance, I'd never let you go again."

Wheein's mouth was agape. There doesn't seem to be a single word that perfectly describes how she feels. "I don't..." she trailed off. She doesn't know what to say.

Byul looks at her with anticipation and dread.

Of course, Wheein wants them to have another chance.

But she still doesn't feel whole yet, so she's definitely not ready for the possibility that her heart might be broken yet again.

Of course Wheein wants it to be her again, she wants to be the one that Byul chooses, but she's not sure if a year is enough to heal the scratches and bruises she got from their relationship.

"I have to go." Wheein states. She could care less about her previous appointment, but she needed to be away from Byul to allow herself to think things thoroughly, without Byul clouding her judgement. She doesn't know if she had it in her to believe Byul.

Byul nods in understanding, acknowledging that what she said must be overwhelming for Wheein. But she didn't regret a thing she said.

Wheein came home drunk that night.

Byul was on the sofa despite telling Wheein that she's going to take a rest and sleep before she left.

There was feeling that's looming on Byul's chest when she saw a half asleep Wheein wrapped in Taehyung's arms as he guides her inside.

"Oh." Hyejin said when she saw Byul. She ran towards the older girl to give her a hug when she got over her surprise. "Unnie! I missed you." Hyejin exclaimed as she tightens their hug. "I thought you're already sleeping."she said pulling away but not letting go of Byul just yet.

"I was waiting for the both of you, just in case." Byul replied with a tight smile.

Byul finally decided to acknowledge Loco and Taehyung's presence with a kind smile.

Taehyung bowed his head when his eyes met Byul's, which Byul reciprocated with a bow of her own. Of course, she's thankful for Taehyung for taking care of Wheein the way she couldn't.

Byul then took a step towards Wheein and Taehyung, holding Wheein by the arm. "I'll take care of her from here." she remarks, and Taehyung thinks Byul meant more than just putting Wheein to bed. He wanted to at least put up a fight. But what can he do? He obviously can't compete with Byul when there has never been a competition in Wheein's heart.

When the news broke that South Korea's favorite girl group are back together, the media went wild, along with SK's general public.

Mamamoo was back to business as if they never took a break as a four-act.

Everything was back to how they were, how it was supposed to - careers wise, that is.

It was their first, tv guesting: Yu Hee-yeol's sketchbook.

After Mamamoo flawlessly performed the mash-up of their old songs, a new sound came on, an intro to an unfamiliar song.

The members looked at each other, silently communicating whether it was a mistake or someone was about to perform a solo song. Well, every member, except for Byul.

Byul smiles, and lifts her microphone just in front of her, "This next song...I wrote this when I was in Japan...I hope you guys like it." she says, bowing afterward.

The staff provided seats for the other members, as Byul took the center stage.

Byul spared them a glance before singing the first verse, and Wheein notes how Yongsun smiles at Byul with encouragement, and how Byul's eyes was fixed on her before looking at the audience.

Wheein was so sure she was over Byul. Her heart was at peace knowing that they broke up in good terms. But when it came down to it,Wheein still loves Byul. And the sinking feeling in her heart tells her that she is always going to be jealous of Yongsun for receiving the kind of love she longed from Byul.

I turn on the TV to watch TV dramas
I have a meaningless late meal
My eyes will get puffy again in the morning

Let’s just stay up all night
But there’s no one around me
(Where to go)

I skip if it’s too far
I scroll down to the bottom of the call list
After thinking a lot, I just make an awkward face
And just pass this moment

She remembers the time she contemplated on calling Wheein, but deciding against it because she didn't want to bother her; hoping that Wheein would make the first move. Oblivious to the fact that Wheein was thinking the same thing.

I feel thirsty
My voice is hoarse, huskier
Skip the uncomfortable calls that break the silence
I mean I don’t know how
I have a mood swing I feel more sentimental

In my room
Every day I see your smile
I feel like I’m hovering around the same place
How I smiled
Sometimes I don’t remember
I’m jealous of your happiness today, too

There were nights when her loneliness were unbearable; so she'd call Hyejin to ease her longing. She remembered that time Hyejin told her about Taehyung, about how the boy made Wheein smile. She remembers how her heart dropped and ached at how she couldn't do anything about it.

Let me see you (You look great when you smile)
Let me feel you

Byul remembers sitting in her room, with Wheein's dimpled smile etched on her mind. Proving that no matter where she goes, she couldn't escape it.

Too much caffeine
I feel like I’ll lose my morning again
Maybe I can open my eyes in the afternoon

Should I stay up all night again?
When I miss you I can’t meet you
(But I can see you)

When Byul decides to look at Wheein, the girl was frowning, as if she was consumed by her own thoughts. Byul shakes her head, wondering if Wheein knows the song was dedicated for her, but guessing that its unlikely.

Everyone seems to have no worries
Everyone keeps boasting different things
I feel like I’m the only misfit
I feel envious in your writing
It’s just a moment captured by this small phone
I think my decision is a little bit premature
My mind is complicated
Increasing sighs make me stay up all night

Wheein was too busy fighting the demons inside her head when she heard an almost deafening screaming from the crowd, forcing her to look up.

In my room
Every day I see your smile

Her heart dropped at the sight of Byul holding a single rose, slowly walking towards them. She wasn't sure whether her mind was playing tricks on her because it looks like Byul's eyes were locked on hers instead of Yongsun's.

I feel like I’m hovering around the same place
How I smiled
Sometimes I don’t remember
I’m jealous of your happiness today, too

The song ended with Byul standing in front of her. She was fully aware of the eyes that were focused on them but she was too distracted by Byul's piercing eyes to even care.

Byul extends the rose in front of her, not letting Wheein make any mistake that it was for anyone else but hers. The show wasn't live, but Byul knows this incident would spread like wildfire. She knows the implications that her actions would cause. And she's willing to face the consequences no matter what.

Byul's just relieved that their company will be behind them when the whole thing blows up.

Wheein's eyes widen in both anticipation and surprise.

The screaming crowd was suddenly quiet, as if understanding that it wasn't a simple gesture for the show; it was more like a proposal, a promise between Moonbyul and Wheein. In their minds, the rumors of Byul and Wheein dating was finally clicking; thinking that it might be true after all, despite the denial from their company.

"I love you, Wheein." Byul states, "I don't know how else to say it."

Wheein finally takes the rose from Byul's hand, standing up; the crowd holding their breath in anticipation of Wheein's answer. And without any warning, she kisses Byul, making the audience cheer so loud, the sound might be heard from across the city.

Yongsun and Hyejin was speechless as they squeezed each other's hand in pride of seeing their two best friends finally be free.

Byul and Wheein have proven time and time again that their life is not like in the movies.

Wheein isn't the first person Byul loved, nor was she her longest relationship. Wheein isn't the first one Byul promised with a mouthful of forever. Their first try in a relationship ended with both their hearts broken. Their love wasn't rainbows and sunshines, but one that was unexpectedly good. Their love came when they’d both given up on asking love to come.

Wheein isn't the first person Byul loved, but Wheein most definitely intend to be her last.

Byul and Wheein have proven time and time again that their life is not like in the movies, but as Byul looks at Wheein in that moment, she can genuinely say that their reality is finally better than the movies.
