What If's

For Them, A Million Times Over

Exiting the dining room with a shaky breath, Seokjin made a quick sudden move to catch Namjoon’s attention. Since Namjoon was still occupied with trying to open candy wrappers for all of the kids who needed the help (which was all of them), it took Seokjin a few discreet waves of his hand to actually get his attention. When he finally did, Seokjin gestured towards the front door, telling Namjoon that he was going outside for a quick second.

Namjoon stood immediately to follow Jin, seeing the worried look on his face, but Jin help up a hand stopping him. Although hesitant, Namjoon sat back down on the couch anyway.

Seokjin took a deep breath as he slipped out of the front door without catching the kids’ attention. As expected, Junmyeon’s truck was parked in front of the house. It wasn’t until Seokjin had descended the steps of the porch and felt hot concrete on the pads of his feet that he realized that he forgot to slide on a pair of slippers before coming outside. So he ran down their concrete path on his tiptoes to the truck and quickly opened the door to slide inside.

Junmyeon greeted Jin with a half hearted smile. Not his usual bright eyed smile that was followed by a tight hug but a smile that didn’t even reach his eyes and was followed, instead, by a deep breath as he gripped tightly on the steering wheel. The car wasn’t even on anymore. Jin’s heart skipped a beat a the tense atmosphere.

“So…” Seokjin murmured. “What’s happened with Bora? Is everything okay?” Jin hated to say that he rarely ever saw his sister nowadays, but it was true. After she had graduated medical school, gotten married, and had kids, Bora was practically just living her own life away from the family. Seokjin didn’t even know if Bora had any kids honestly. He’s never heard anything about her being pregnant. He missed her and wanted more than anything to rekindle their family bond. But everytime the thought crossed his mind to give her a call, he always just simply proscranticated and told himself he’ll call another time.

He hoped with all of his heart that there was still time to do that.

Junmyeon didn’t answer Jin right away. He gave another sigh. “She… She and her husband were in a car accident this morning… The car was hit from the side by one of those 18 wheeler trucks. They both are in critical condition.” He inhaled a sharp deep breath before continuing. “The doctors said they’re doing all they can but…”

Jin didn’t even let Junmyeon finish before he was burying his face in his hands to try to hide the tears burning the rims of his eyes. He didn’t want to hear the rest. Just by the tone of Myeonnie’s voice, Jin just knew that this wasn’t going to end well.

“B-Bora…” was all Jin could whisper.

“But, the two of them have… triplets together. Jimin… Taehyung… and Jungkook,” Junmyeon said with a wavering voice. He didn’t want to cry right now.

“Where are the kids right now?”

“With the husband’s parents for now. But they said that they won’t be able to keep the triplets for too long. They only plan on keeping them until Bora and her husband recover…” Junmyeon’s voice trailed off.

And while Seokjin wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer to the question he was about to ask, he knew he should ask. “W-will they recover?”

When Jin raised his head from his cupped hands, his eyesight was blurry from the tears. Despite his obscured vision, he didn’t miss the sight of Junmyeon’s composure crumbling down at the question. That fake smile melted into a heavy frown as a river of tears began to cascade down his soft cheeks and his bottom lip trembled like it always did when he cried. Junmyeon had to admit that hearing it hurt. Even if the question really needed to be addressed, and in the back of Junmyeon’s mind, he knew this. But it hurt so bad.

“I-I… I don’t think they will, Jinnie,” he whispered through soft sobs and sniffs. That’s when Jin broke. He wondered if Junmyeon could hear his heart break because he could’ve sworn he heard it. The exact moment when his heart shattered. “W-we just have to have hope… Okay? We will g-go and see them both tomorrow. The doctors had no updates today so… let’s hope.

There was a firm hand on Seokjin’s shoulder, squeezing him, giving him strength. The both of them took this time to cry, knowing that there was no way they could go back into the house, where they’re children were waiting for them, in this state. Today was Yoongi’s birthday. A happy day. So Junmyeon and Seokjin interlocked their fingers and held onto each other as tight as humanly possible as they cried. Hoping and hoping that Bora would live.

Namjoon picked up his phone to look at the time again. Every time he did so, this uneasy feeling in his chest only became more prominent. The kids were giggling on the floor, most likely just hyped on the sugar that Kris, Jiyong, Heechul, and Namjoon had to take away and hide from them. Yes, it took all four men to run around the living room and confiscate every single piece of candy thrown about around the room before the kids could eat anymore.

Whoever this Jeonghan guy was probably didn’t have any kids if he thought that bringing all of this candy would end well for them.

It had been about twenty minutes since Seokjin went outside with that worried look on his face. He knew that if Jin truly needed him that Jin wouldn’t hesitate to come get him. But still, he couldn’t help but feel anxious about the situation.

“What’s the problem?” Kris questioned quietly, noticing Namjoon’s sudden change in mood.

“Jin hasn’t come back yet. He said he was going outside for some reason. Maybe I should go check on him. See if he is okay.” Namjoon bit at his lip momentarily before he decided that he probably should go check on Seokjin. As soon as Namjoon stood and carefully maneuvered around all of the kids on the floor, careful not to step on any of their tiny hands and feet,  the front door opened. Seokjin and Junmyeon entered with a tired smile.

Namjoon knew Seokjin like the back of his hand. Even with that effervescent smile plastered on his lips as he made his way over with Junmyeon by his side, Namjoon could tell that Seokjin was hurting.

“Appa! Appa! I saved you some candy!” Hoseok shrieked. Yoongi and Hoseok ran to Seokjin before Namjoon had even gotten the chance to get Seokjin’s attention. “Hey! I saved some for you too, Appa. Not just Hoseok,” Yoongi pouted.

“Oh! That’s so sweet of you two!”

Namjoon decided to wait until later to talk about it with Jin.

“Were you all good boys for your Baba and Uncles?” Junmyeon asked his children that were still on the floor playing in Heechul and Jiyong’s hair.

“Yes!” Luhan and Minseok gave bright, toothy smiles in order to prove it. Yixing only nodded his head which caused Kris to give an endearing smile and run a hand through the youngest boy’s hair. Yixing was learning Korean fairly quickly and his fathers couldn’t be more proud of him.

“Good,” Junmyeon smiled. “And you two must be Namjoon’s older brothers. I’m Seokjin’s brother, Junmyeon,” he introduced to the two men lying on the floor with messy hair that the kids prided themselves on doing.

“I’m Jiyong,” the shorter man said, standing. Junmyeon almost stopped breathing when he finally got to see Jiyong’s face clearly.

“You’re G-Dragon,” Junmyeon stated in awe. He would’ve been so much more excited, possibly jumping up and down like some fanboy, if he wasn’t so overwhelmed with panic and a lingering sadness.

Jiyong smiled proudly. “Yup, that’s me.” Junmyeon shook Jiyong’s hand firmly. And when Heechul stood to introduce himself next, he hadn’t even gotten the chance to get the words out.

“Kim Heechul?” Junmyeon questioned.

“Yes. You know me too?” Heechul questioned with a bit of amusement in his tone.

“You’re the owner of SJ fashion company and entertainment. I’m Junmyeon… The creator of Exo clothing line under your company.”

Heechul’s eyes went wide in recognition. “Really? We have a meeting tomorrow, don’t we?”

Junmyeon ecstatically shook his head in confirmation and shook Heechul’s hand too.

“The clothing line is fantastic by the way. I look forward to getting to know more about you tomorrow other than the fact that you are technically my brother in law.”

“Thank you and same here,” Junmyeon smiled. “I’m quite surprised someone like Namjoon is related to the two of you.”

“I’m gonna act like I didn’t hear that,” Namjoon rolled his eyes.

“No, it was meant for you to hear,” Junmyeon reassured with a sarcastic smile. Despite the banter, it was obvious judging by the way Junmyeon collapsed onto the sofa with Kris and instantly melted into his frame, that he was as tired as Seokjin seemed to be.

Namjoon turned to look for his lover and all of the kids, that had suddenly disappeared from the living room floor. He smiled when he heard them all in the kitchen.

Namjoon silently tiptoed towards the archway that leads to the kitchen and listens to the cute conversation of the kids.

“Can we have cake now?” He heard Yoongi plead.

“Yeah! We really want cake,” Hoseok agreed.

“We’ve been good boys all day. Right, Luhan and XingXing,” Minseok questioned.

“Yup!”

“Yes…” The uncertainty was laced all throughout Yixing’s tone. He was getting the hang off the Korean language quite quickly but there were certain times when the words would get completely jumbled in his mind. Especially when there were several people talking like there was now. He grabbed for Hoseok’s hand who never denied affection like the other boys did sometimes.

“Don’t you want dinner first?”

A chorus of “Noooo” from all of the kids filled the space of the kitchen. Namjoon couldn’t help but laugh at that. With his cover blown, he slipped into the kitchen with a gentle smile adorning his face, bringing out those prominent dimples Seokjin loved so much.

While he didn’t want anymore kids for a long time, Namjoon had to admit that he found it quite adorable and endearing to see five kids hopping around begging for cake from his lover. One day, he’d like to have more kids. He’d also love to be able to call Seokjin his husband one day.

Namjoon’s chest filled with warmth at the thought of his left ring finger being decorated with a beautiful symbol of his love with this man.

“Get the cake out of the freezer, Joon,” Seokjin said as he scooped Yoongi off of the ground to sit him on the countertop.

“Luhan and Hoseok, can you go tell everyone else that we are about to sing to the birthday boy and eat cake.” The two boys were jetting out of the room before Seokjin even finished his sentence.

“My cake is so pretty,” Yoongi marveled when Namjoon carefully set the ice cream cake next to him on the marble countertop in the middle of the kitchen. Jin undid the box and allowed Minseok and Yixing to do the honors of placing six blue candles into the ice cream cake.

It was actually Heechul’s idea to get the ice cream cake. He knew that it would be a pleasant surprise to Yoongi and Hoseok to see that the ice cream was actually inside of his cake. Seokjin could already imagine Hoseok’s signature dramatic gasp and picture the widening of Yoongi’s eyes when they cut the cake.

Everyone filed into the kitchen while Namjoon struggled to light the candles so Jin took over that job, not wanting anyone to get hurt. Jiyong, being the last to enter, flicked the lights off and everyone gathered around the island where Yoongi sat cross legged in front of his cake.

When the singing actually began, Yoongi even sang along and clapped to himself. It was something that Yoongi would definitely do and Jin and Namjoon couldn’t help but laugh.

“Make a wish and blow out the candles,” Heechul encouraged.

It wasn’t really a surprise to anyone that Yoongi didn’t really take the time to make a wish and just blew out his candles. With a total of six blows- one for each candle- Yoongi blew all of his candles out.

Seokjin could still feel the lingering feeling of melancholy in his chest from earlier, but there was nothing better than being able to celebrate another year of having Yoongi. Another year of Yoongi growing. Six years. Oh, time went by so quickly.

He remembers the day when he walked into Sunmi’s apartment to find Yoongi all alone in crib. He wasn’t even crying, probably had already given up since no one had came. Jin hated thinking about that. A one year old all alone for only God knows how long.

Seokjin couldn’t believe that, today, that same one year old was happily turning six.

Hoseok was five now. It felt like yesterday when he met the little three year old. So excited and full of energy when he first greeted the boy in the backseat of Namjoon’s car.

If Jin learned anything from hearing that Bora had been in a car accident, it was that you can’t take people for granted. You cherish the best times and strive to make more of those memories. Because… time moved quickly. And no one knows when something will occur that takes that person away. For good.

Seokjin giggled at his family and grabbed at Yoongi’s smile little hands and kissed them. He would cherish these days and every day that comes with his family.

“Happy Birthday, my little sugar cube.”

By the time 10 o’clock made an appearance and everyone else left, Hoseok and Yoongi looked as if they were ready to pass out and sleep for the next few days or so.

So, Namjoon and Seokjin worked as quickly as they could to get the two in the bathtub, brush their teeth, and get them into comfortable pajamas. As always, Yoongi was more of a handful than Hoseok was.

Hoseok was a bit slow and unresponsive to his their request since he was so tired, but he eventually did it. Namjoon had to ask Hoseok at least three times to raise his hands so he could slip his shirt on and twice to open his mouth to brush his teeth. But, hey, in the end, Hoseok was in bed and out like a light.

Yoongi was just as unresponsive primarily because of exhaustion but also because he just didn’t want to be bothered and refused to do anything Seokjin and Namjoon asked him to do.

Yoongi refused to open his mouth to brush his teeth and refused to put on his pajamas too. When Seokjin threatened to put him in time out, Yoongi reluctantly obeyed and cried that he was tired and just wanted to lay in bed.

Even though it took ten extra minutes because of Yoongi’s fits, both boys were comfortably put in bed, receiving a good night kiss and “I love you” from their fathers.

Seokjin lingered around the room for a bit while Namjoon left, leaving the door ajar for Jin. But Jin didn’t want to leave yet. There was an overwhelming feeling in his chest and he knew exactly what it was.

The tears burned the rims of his eyes as he shifted his gaze from Hoseok who was sleeping in the bottom bunk to Yoongi sleeping in the top. He couldn’t stop the tears. These two were so precious to him. He knew that thinking about it was unreasonable but he couldn’t bear the thought of something happening to one of them. Being taken away from him. It hurt.

Jin raised a hand over his mouth as he silently cried. “A-Appa loves y-you both so much,” he whispered. He knew the boys were sleep and wouldn’t hear him. But he needed to say it. To let them know that he loved them. No matter what happened, that their Appa loved them more than he could stand.

The tears came harder and harder as he buried his face in his hands and silently sobbed.

He did so until there was a familiar warmth enveloping him and leading him out of the darkness of the kids’ room. “Jinnie? Sweetheart, tell me what’s wrong,” Namjoon cooed, leading Seokjin to their room and to their bed to sit down.

When Jin didn’t answer, he kneeled down between his legs and pried his hands away from his face to hold them within his own. “Come on, sweetheart. Stop crying. What’s the matter?” Namjoon asked again, his voice almost a soft whisper. Using one hand to caress Jin’s knee, he used his other hand to wipe the tears from his lover’s warm, blotched face. He hated seeing Jin like this.

“Bora…” Jin sniffed as he attempted to stifle the waves of tears threatening to fall again. “S-she… was in a car accident this morning… She’s in critical condition and… Namjoon…” Seokjin’s composure crumbled again.

Namjoon quickly stood to wrap Jin in a tight hug, squeezing him lightly for reassurance. “I’m sorry, Jinnie. I’m so sorry,” he kept repeating. He’d never met Bora before but heard a lot about her from Jin and Junmyeon. From what he heard, he also knew that Bora was a very busy woman that never really had the time to do much else than what she had to do at home.

He was a bit sad that he wouldn’t get to meet her. But he could only imagine what Seokjin was feeling. He tried imagining the pain he would feel if Heechul or Jiyong was in critical condition and, from the sounds of it, didn’t have a high chance of surviving. Damn. Just the thought brought tears to his eyes.

But Seokjin was living this. Namjoon squeezed tighter. “It’s okay.”

“No!” Seokjin yelled, tears still cascading down his reddened cheeks, as he pushed Namjoon away. The veins in his forehead were bulging and Namjoon just knew that Jin must have a horrible headache. “It’s not okay! It’s not… It’s not okay. I took her for granted. I didn’t spend enough time with her. I kept pushing it off because I thought that there was always a… tomorrow. And now… There might not be one for her.”

Namjoon sighed and slowly reached out to Jin who broke down in tears again, a hand clutching his forehead. “That’s not your fault, Jinnie. We all make that mistake. But you can’t blame yourself for the fact that you’re busy and so is she,” Namjoon said. “Please let me hold you, Jinnie.”

Jin didn’t answer. Just stood from where he was sitting on the end of the mattress of their bed and threw himself into Namjoon’s arms. “What if something happens to the kids? I wouldn’t be able to… live with myself if something happened. I don’t want anything to happen to them, Namjoon.” Jin was practically sobbing now.

“Sweetheart, there are so many ‘what ifs’ in this world. Anything can happen and I can’t guarantee you that nothing will ever happen to the kids. No matter how much I want to, I can’t. But if we spend all of our time worried about what could happen, we miss everything that is happening.” Jin quieted down a bit as Namjoon gently weaved his fingers in the older’s hair.

“I’m sorry about Bora. But you can’t live in a world full of ‘what ifs’ just because this happened to her. But you can hope. We can hope and try for the better things in life, but if something bad happens then, Jinnie, that’s okay too. If Bora doesn’t survive that’s okay… Do you understand?”

“...Yes,” Jin sighed, sniffing a bit more before pulling his head from Namjoon’s shoulder to look him in the eye. “I love you, Joon.”

“I love you too.”

“I have a headache,” Jin croaked. Matter of fact, everything hurt. As much as Jin wanted to just take a bath, he wanted sleep too. He couldn’t pick. “Should we take a bath or go to sleep.”

Namjoon smiled. “How about we take a quick shower and then sleep?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

And while Jin could worry about the ‘what ifs,’ he chose to live in the moment and shower with his lover. He’ll cherish every moment he can. Even with that sense of sadness still present in his heart, he always had room to feel the love in his heart too.
