A is for Art
LMNOh SehunSehun paced around his classroom, observing his students’ artwork. He noticed rainbows and stick people. Stopping at Sunmi’s desk he smiled, “Now, what did you draw?”
Sunmi stopped coloring and blinked at him, “You don’t know?”
Sehun smiled wider, “Of course I do,” he studied the drawing, “It’s a dog, a very lovely puppy.”
Sunmi’s eyes narrowed and she crossed her arms, “No, guess again.”
Sehun cleared his throat, “Oh, it’s a wolf! I see it now. The ear- “
“Wrong again Mr. Oh,” Sunmi snapped
Minyoo ambled over, “I will help you Mr. Oh.” He studied the picture, tilting his head back and forth, “It’s a deer.”
“Really?” Sehun asked picking up the paper and turning it round and round.
“Minyoo’s right, it’s a deer. I love deer, they’re so pretty.” Sunmi smiled.
“I see it now,” Sehun lied, “I like deer too.
“Minyoo, what did you draw?”
Clutching his hand, Minyoo led Sehun back to his desk. Proudly, he presented his art with a flourish. On black construction paper, Minyoo had drawn two stick figures in white crayon. The figures were holding hands, and despite his limited six-year old skill, the figures did appear to be looking up.
Above them, he’d drawn tons of tiny dots in gold crayon, “Stars,” he explained, “My friend and me are looking at the stars.”
“This is quite creative Minyoo.” Sehun praised, “Is this the friend you went to lunch with?”
Minyoo nodded, “Choy, he’s my best friend.”
Sehun smiled, “You must show him this picture. He will love it.”
Addressing the class, he added, “Before we begin Christmas break, we’ll have a little art show for parents, siblings, and friends. Each of you will choose one piece of art and display it, so work hard.”
There were squeals of delight as the students explored the prospect of having their art displayed. It was late October, so they wouldn’t have to wait too long.
