Chapter 5
The One Who Got AwayWaking up the day after she told Bom everything, Dara felt heaps better than ever. She went through her usual routine to prepare for work. She took a quick shower, blow-dried her hair and gathered it into a loose bun. She was going for comfy and casual today. She wore a crisp, white button-down shirt, navy pin-striped ankle length chinos and a pair of adidas nmd trainers. She applied a little powder and some tinted gloss on her lips before she left the house.
Her first years in university she took as much classes as it was possible to keep herself busy so she won't have time to wallow in self-pity. Downside was that on her final year, she found out that her course load was very light because she was already done with most of her requisite classes. With a lot of time in her hands she went out looking for a job.
She first started as a part-timer at the radio station. She didn't think she would last that long at her job. When she started she wasn't thinking about log-term employment. She was in charge of making sure everyone had their coffee, delivered time schedules and memos, distributed handouts during minutes, covered for the receptionist during mealtimes and did whatever odd jobs that needed to be done at the station.
When she saw the advert posted on the radio station's entrance, she was hesitant to apply since it was a radio station and the industry is inescapably tied to the music industry. But then she found that the station's format was adult contemporary - easy listening music. It was miles away from pop, R&B and Hip-Hop. The chances of bumping into Jiyong at a mall was higher than bumping into him at the station.
It was a tiring and almost thankless job but she soon enjoyed going to work. She became close with her sunbae-nims. They became like family and treated her like their little sister. After graduating, she could have found a job much appropriate for her degree in theater arts but coward that she was felt that she had found her comfort zone and decided to stay.
When Kang Min Ah, the receptionist slash secretary, resigned because she was getting married, the station offered the job to her and she accepted. She has been with the company for almost three years now.
The salary wasn't spectacular but it's enough to pay for the bills and the good camaraderie she had with her workmates helped sweeten the deal.
She tidied her workstation as she came in. Checked any changes in the schedule. "Good morning, sunbae-nim." She greeted Noh Hong Chul, their chief engineer. "Sunbae, your wife called a while ago. She said to remind you that at lunchtime you have an appointment with your son's teacher."
"Thanks, Sandy. I almost forgot about that. Have you heard the news, yet?" He asked Sandy.
"What news?" Sandy asked.
"Mr. Lee's retiring. We heard his son is going to take his place." Hong Chul told her.
"Do you know anything about his son?" Sandy asked.
"Not much. All I know is he studied in the states. Got some fancy, smartass degree from NYU. We're worried that he's going to make chang
